- BestGuyEver Understands Artistic Integrity | CZcamsr on CZcamsr. Today I am joined by a fellow youtuber whose videos I have been a fan of for many years, BestGuyEver, as the flagship guest in a new video series I hope I am able to continue into the future called CZcamsr on CZcamsr. The idea of the series (in case you've haven't seen Variety Actor on Actor) is to talk to other CZcamsrs that I respect about their creative process and ethos when it comes to making videos. I'm excited about this series because I do think there can be more artistic merit to making videos and reviewing media that is beyond just chasing algorithms or pushing political views, but that takes a certain degree of self-control and discipline since many forces on the internet incentivize drifting towards the lowest common denominator and treating media like soap boxes to stand on.
The main thing I love about BGE's channel, other than his fun on camera personality, is his like-minded respect for the artistic integrity of media and often discusses important topics surrounding remake culture, author intent, artist -versus-publishers, and media revision. My favorite parts of the interview are when we dig into these topics :-)
As fun as it is to talk to BGE, there is an important topic that he is asking for help on, which is helping him merely get the attention of a human being at CZcams with some authority about an absurd copyright situation that has somehow snowballed into getting BGE's longtime youtube channel taken down. As both BGE and I express in the episode, neither of us are the types who want to engage in big statements or internet drama or public outcry or anything like that. The issue though is that BGE's copyright situation, I feel, is mostly the result of automation in the copyright system gone wrong (as well as the aggressive copyright policy of Japanese companies like Shueisha) that fired off all at once without giving BGE any chance to correct or rectify what the copyright holder wanted changed. Also, the fact that CZcams is behind the scenes connecting together the behavior of accounts that are completely disconnected from one another is wild. I can see why they would do something like that in some ways, but at the same time I think treating a copyright strike on a smaller experimental channel as a strike against a larger more standard channel is going to lead to a ton of problems and unfair situations for the creators.
BestGuyEver is requesting, if you are inclined, that you follow his twitter and help him tweet at youtube support #FreeBGE as well as potentially helping him with other attempts to get their attention like writing letters. My hope for the situation is that a human at CZcams takes a look at the situation and smoothly amends the copyright strike snowball and allows BGE to continue his career as usual. Always fun to listen to these discussions. I don't think the battle between digital and physical is at all about preservation of the media as much as it is about defending ourselves against the very clear organized attempt to remove the ability to own copies of media vs being locked into a tightly controlled digital infrastructure.
Absolutely pqod and I agree there completely. I do not trust these digital storefronts at all. I just think the nuance of the topic that it isn't digital media in itself that is the issue (which video games are in all forms) but rather the way the media is being locked up with DRM on storefronts is the huge problem. Because another aspect of this conversation people forget is that "physical" games can also be locked out with DRM. Like on the nintendo switch, if your console gets banned from online use, it will also lock out your physical games from being played eventually, at least newer releases, since you will need newer firmware to play newer physical games. Of course the answer in that case, as well as in the case of digital DRM, is jailbreaking/hacking, which Nintendo is trying to make illegal.
I feel his pain. I had an instagram art account that was gaining steam, tons of lovely fans and friends who loved my art and who I talked to every day, but insta decided it was too edgy and-banned. Lost tons of personal videos of my baby’s first years of life, tons of followers, etc. The upside is that I no longer use social media at all, the downside is I haven’t really drawn anything much since then. Gutting. I was getting… pretty damn good, too. Social media, platforms, everything-they be on some bullships.
I guess “racy” is the word, not edgy. I exhibited 0% edginess on Instagram.

Yup! From the little I know/have heard is that the only way to un-do erroneous CZcams bans/deletions is to know someone on the inside. Probably because it's mostly ran by robots, and is criminally under-staffed (actual robots; not trying to insult anyone).

Oh man. I used to watch BGE all the time but dropped off when the whole old crew fell apart. He was my fav too of the bunch. I remember recently seeing that one of the consequences of a group of youtubers is that if they break apart everyone loses viewership
Yeah I think you are right. And look how much of his former crew are still in tact at this point to help spread the word. I love youtube collabs, but I think these days the meta is that you have to stand alone and then cross over with one another time to time, like lone wolves in the woods ha.

Wow! this is a crossover i never imagined! I've been a BestGuyEver subscriber for so many years already. Even before Knowing about The Electric Underground.
The only person I’ve seen that have criticisms with ff7 rebirth is synthetic man (which if you know him, well he’s more on the political side) and sackchief when he was playing it for a bit in a livestream. I hate how everyone in the comments of ff7 rebirth videos is saying that the remake trilogy will make the original obsolete. Yeah because the remake trilogy has had the same cultural impact as the og ff7
I feel like Synth Man is the kind of person who probably could make interesting criticisms if he laid off the culture war kool-aid a bit. Though then again, the main reason why a lot of critics on both sides focus so much on the cultural side of things is likely because they're less knowledgeable in the more artistic/mechanical side of things.
Exactly mingo, it's sanctioned fanfiction at this point basically. I really wish someone would make a video on the topic. I'm gonna make a vid pretty soon about JRPGs actually, but it has to do with gameplay and not lore and stuff.

In fact, when the culture war elements of a game are negligible background radiation, he often acknowledges them as such and moves on. Conversely, if a game focuses on them, he will focus as well. What you mean is you would prefer if he didn't make you uncomfortable. There has been a recent wave of enlightenment as people realize that politics is downstream from culture. While artistic and mechanical aspects are important to good games, it doesn't matter if games are just anti-human mind poison. In fact, teaching people who hate you to make better, more competent entertainment products to better propagandize people would be a mistake. Expelling the cancerous elements is more important than getting the hitstun correct or perfecting the pacing. But if that isn't good enough for you, then consider this: Games today are made by committee. They are bureaucratic and bloated. That bureaucracy that is targeted by culture warriors is the same one that waters down your game mechanics and quashes innovative thought. You have a common, civilizational enemy that you are unable to confront because you fear being associated with undersirable people.
A few years ago I lost my YT channel. I don't upload or anything, I just have large playlists of music I discover and favorite and listen to over and over. I had MASSIVE playlists of music I foudn over years and years. I made comments that were offensive and finally that got me in trouble and the channel was nuked. Lost my playlists (and my comments which were pretty fun to reread from time to time) and THAT, as small as that is, really pissed me off. So I can't imagine losing VIDEOS and content I made and income because of some stupid shit like this from YT.
Don't wanna come off as political but this just proves how certain freedoms like freedom of speech is heavily restricted on a corporate platform. That or people are just soft asf now. Smh.

Losing BGE's channel is a genuine tragedy. I rewatch his Smash character reveals multiple times yearly, and The Dusa Experience is legit one of my favorite videos on this platform (for some sick reason). I noticed his channel's sudden disappearance within hours. #FreeBGE

The Ninja Warriors Returns Remake is remade by the exact same guys and it turned out fantastic. So maybe the 5 years window thing is not always a good idea.
Yeah, I think they meant in general but like many things there are exceptions. But that could get pretty muddy and would vary on the person
Funny you mention that release because Boghog has been discussing that remake with me recently, and it's got some issues that aren't obvious. So a big one he's been pointing out is that the enemy AI in the remake is much more passive than in the OG release and that the hard mode of the game in the remake is too easy. So there you go, as solid as that remake is, it might not be as good as the OG version.

Anybody that's still watching this video and wondering if Best Guy Ever did just recently get his channel back. He did and and he's very grrateful for everybody's efforts.
My comment is related to something mentioned @1:14:00 questioning if there's any real point to having critical critques instead of just jumping on the hype train.
I do agree that the role of the professional critic is a dying breed, and it's due to the fact that majority of people who consume and judge art, do not think critically about it.
I would often get confused when my girlfriend would get up in the middle of a movie without pausing it, or watch 90 minutes and then get up to do something else and never come back. And it's because media really has become content and not art, and the average anime reviewer can't tell the difference between Princess Mononke and that anime about a time a girl went rock climbing, and generally don't care to learn.
But Best Guy Ever suggests maybe this is a good thing, but at the same time he still fights to highlight art that is underappreciated

The purpose of a system is what it does. This is not some unfortunate accident. It's not a bug, it's a feature. The plebians are at the mercy of the system, only large corporate entities have the funding to navigate (or more likely bypass) the labyrinthine design of said system. Until CZcams actually works to fix this, that is the intention of what they've designed. CZcams would probably be exceedingly happy to drive every sub 100K uploader off the platform so they can delete those videos and free up the server space. Many people have theorized that CZcams's endgame is to turn it into an extension of the mainstream cable television paradigm, and I don't doubt that anything that sands off problematic edges and bumps in this way is actually considered a positive by them.
Yeah the move to "monetize" was the original sin, like now people dont even upload for the fun of it, but in hopes of a "career" - even they talk "well we have to cater our videos to an audience" - it just being a few big channels is just the end result of that
Some people don't like George Lucas's changes, but I think you are at least on better ground if the original creator is deciding. To me thats better than changes to made by companies after the artist is dead and it's worse with games as there's not any rule of authorship. So we rely on fans for good upgrades.

First I want to say that you have way to much "understanding" for "why copyright laws need to be there". These companies have no concern or care ofr you generally speaking so you should be equally hostile to them. That said as someone who makes youtube videos about anime, I have been through the gauntlet with copyright trolls. That said, the company behind one punch man was one of the few reasonable ones and retracted their claim immediately after I submitted my request, where most companies will just let it sit for 30 days, so theres that.

I appreciate that you guys are discussing the ontology of art, why does it exist, and are people too hyperfocused with it to a detriment. The answer is yes, art is exactly like the rest of the phenotype, it exists because it helped us be better at sex and make babies. Art is detrimental, in that it gets disfavored evolutionarily, to the extent that it distracts you too much from making babies. The best artists are the ones who can best emulate social existence on an alternative medium. This displays desirable qualities to mates, and mates make sexual selections on this basis. Ornamentations much like the peacock tail. It's basically a sexual competition mechanism.

That's a fascinating view of art, actually. Very Freudian in a way. I do think that deep down a lot of our behaviors do link back to sex and survival, but I think that leads to an interesting question about how creating great art can be an advantage sexually. There is definitely some sort of communal social aspect to it for sure, and we are social creatures. Art could be seen as a way to get and preserve attention perhaps? It's an interesting question.
Inhuman, utilitarian, deconstructionist rubbish. When you have snuffed out every last light of the transcendent with your zeal for scientism, I wonder if you will recognize the sterile world you have created for the soulless prison that it is, or will you rejoice in your perfectly ordered existence as a "meat computer".
