    About This Video:
    In this video, Techno Dad goes over how to setup Dolby Atmos and Zone 2 using the Onkyo TX-NR676. This is a great feature if you want to add a second zone of music to you home. With this workaround, you'll be able to have 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos playing in the main room, and a second room will have different music playing in a 2-channel configuration.

    To be honest, volume control is so important no matter what room you are, I would prefer 2 AVR's or simply powered speakers.. Tell me if I not missing anything? I rather buy a second hand AVR instead of running long RCA cables and get the job done, independent controls :) May be good for showrooms or other scenarios

    Okay, just learned some things that you may want to know and update this video. To do this set up correctly, you NEED to re run the initial set up process. Skip through to the part that deals with zone 2 set up. Once there you will have the option to select how you are going to power zone 2. There are 3 different choices.
    Once set up in that menu, you can use the pre outs, have zone 2 on with volume control without losing the rear channels. When the app is used after that it's actually a great setup to control volume and sources in Zone 2 from different rooms. The key is using the initial set up menu, not the normal menu to the set zone 2 up.

    • @jeffreymajkrzak8770
      @jeffreymajkrzak8770 Před 6 lety

      I forgot to add, this is all completely independent from the main room. You can play totally different sources in the main room from zone 2. Example main playing Blu-ray and zone 2 playing your vinyl records.

    *** Update *** // Onkyo is wrong and Techo Dad is right! You will absolutely have to add a preamp for volume control. I followed Onkyo's instructions and the volume control on the phone app did nothing. It changes to the setting you want without affect. Tested with my Phono //
    I have an Onkyo NR-676 and decided to add a Akia tape deck and an Akai EA-A7 Equalizer inline with a Kenwood power amp. I added it all without attaching the speaker to the amp at first because of this vid and not wanting to have the volume control surprise to thanks Techno Dad!! What I found out is that you get volume control with analogue component sources but not with digital sources using the zone 2 preout if you set zone 2 up in speaker config. Additionally you can setup the app on your phone to show main and zone 2 separately and get fairly granular with control. Note, Bluetooth and FM/AM will play at 100% power over zone 2 while HDMI sources will send nothing at all. I ended up just adding a second pair of speakers for the digital sources and use my main speakers for the old school sources then just power off the amp when not spinning records or playing tapes. Would like to see Techno Dad revisit this as I'm sure he could reach more ppl than me. I'm not much of a CZcamsr.

      Hi Greg! What's the question?

    • @gbw1972
      @gbw1972 Před 2 lety

      @@TechnoDad My house has speakers in the kitchen and dining ceilings that are wired to the family room receiver. The kitchen/dining speakers have volume knobs on the wall. I had been using the main L/R preout on the main receiver to share the same source via Niles preamps to power those speakers. The variable volume on the dining/kitchen speakers was always far lower than on the main family room speakers and I had to have the main speaker volume overly loud to utilize the other speakers (maybe because the builder-grade speakers in the other rooms are not as efficient as the Klipsch CDT-5800-C II’s that I put in the family room). Anyway, after watching your video, it finally dawned on me that I should be using the zone preout instead of sharing the main L/R preout. I very much appreciate the detail you put into your videos. Thanks again!
      My plan next is to add 2 klipsch rf 7 iii as my new L/R and change the current front L/R ceiling speakers to Front Presence speakers. Should the rear surround ceiling speakers also be changed to Rear Presence for Atmos? Also, is my Yamaha Aventage RX-A 2070 w/ 150 watts/ch enough to run the 2 new Klipsch RF 7iii? I couldn’t find a ‘range’. Klipsch just lists them as 250 watts. I’ve read several things that say the receiver should have excess power and some say that’s not necessary. I could add something like a Crown XLS 2502 if excess power is needed.

  • @jpgeek512

    I'm using zone 2 for two different rooms but need to leave the zone setting on in setup. In-room one, I'm using the wired connectors which use the TX-NZ676 amp's volume to drive the speakers. In the second room, I'm using the RCA zone 2 connected to speakers with volume control. Really the two rooms are a front porch and a rear porch. The front porch is wireless with volume control. You should also check out the Onkyo Controller app which allow you do controll everything from your smart phone. This is the best amp ever!

    Great video! So here's what I'm looking to do. I am in a HUGE basement that has a few separate areas. There is one area in which my band rehearses. Next to that (still open area) is my "Media area" where I have a 70" TV and my Onkyo TX-SR393 5.2 Surround system with Atmos. Then I have another area around the corner where I have couches and and an area to dance (yes....it will probably be just a sit and talk area more than dancing). There are 2 Pioneer bookshelf speakers there and 2 Sony speakers in another area hooked up to my Insignia receiver.
    SO.....I know that I will NEVER be watching a movie with Surround Sound while people are chatting over in the sitting area. I want to basically just be able to use Zone 2 (Onkyo calls it Zone B on this unit) to add the sound from my CD player/Tuner or Turntable from my Onkyo system over to the Insignia receiver to the Pioneer and Sony speakers (using the Zone B outputs and Aux input on the Insignia receiver). I don't really want Atmos to be on when I do that so I guess I should turn on the Zone 2 configuration. Does that sound about right? Then I guess I can control the Pioneer and Sony speakers in the sitting area with the Zone 2 volume.
    I hope that was clear as mud :) Can you tell me if I actually know what I'm doing or if not, can you help? Thanks!

I do have Bose 907 and you know those speakers really need preamp output for the EQ device then the signal can be processed by the power amp for final output. My question is .. can we control all the audio from Onkyo speakers as well for other speakers those were connected by the preamp connection.

    I personally would like a zone 2 so I can send video signal to an AVR in another room from my cable box in my Home Theatre. That way I can get cable in 2 rooms without having to pay $10 in perpetuity to rent a second box. The downside or trade off is having to be in the next room to operate the cable box remote and only being able to use the cable source in 1 room at a time. Im not sure that level of functionality would be worth it or not.

    Can you synchronize zone 2 to main zone? I have an open kitchen, so would like to have 5.1 surround on couch and 2.0 in the kitchen. Unfortunately while testing I have some delay between the main zone and zone 2. I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, or is the ONKYO not syncing at all the zones...

This would take pressure of my onoko amp no?

    So just got my DEnon 4400H avr, after hooking up the front L + R speakers just to test out. I use a HDMI from my PC to one of the HDMI Input of the AVR, then HDMI out from AVR to HDMI In of my Monitor. I can see the picture, but whenver I play anything that has sound on my PC, I can't hear anything. There are 3 HDMI Outputs from the Denon 4400H, and I tried all 3, nothing work, can't hear a damn thing. What did I do wrong?

    • @TechnoDad
      @TechnoDad  Před 5 lety

      Hi! The HDMI from your computer will only transmit video. You'll have to connect audio via RCA or optical from computer to Denon.

    • @Mucher696969
      @Mucher696969 Před 5 lety

      @@TechnoDad This is not likely the case. If his video card has an HDMI out it most likely will pass the audio through just fine. If he is using a converter from DVI or RGB into an HDMI, then it will not send the sound. I've been using HDMI to send video and audio from my PC to my TV since 2009.
      What is more likely the case is that he does not have the correct default sound device selected in Windows. Probably either has his computer speakers or a headset selected to output audio.
