  • Dolphin woodcarving, Part 1: Preparation of the carving patterns.
Hi my friends! In this video we are starting a series of three videos. In the first part we are going to prepare the patterns needed for the carving of a dolphin in black walnut. In the second part we are going to use those patterns to make, with the bandsaw, a rough cutting of the blank. And in the third video we will use this rough blank to do the actual carving using manual tools.

    Disclaimer:
You, and only you, are responsible for your safety in the shop and for your health. The procedures shown in this video, (and my answers to the comments), although they are the ones I consider safe, are not necessarily so for every operator (wood turner, carpenter, etc.). Wood is a heterogeneous and unpredictable material, not two pieces are identical, even when they come from the same trunk of the same tree, shop tools and machines can cause damage to the operator, dust and other physical and chemical contaminants may cause disease and disorders when the operator does not take into consideration adequate protection. Always read operation manuals for your tools and machinery. This video can give you a point to start your research on what is the best for you, but, in any way is the only source of information. The level of experience of the operator is also a factor; procedures that may be safe for an operator that has a lot of experience may not be dangerous for an operator with less experience. If you do not feel safe or confident with a procedure you have seen in my channel, do not repeat it. Be safe and enjoy these activities.

Very clever use of the computer to produce WHAT YOU WANT, Not what it wants you to have. Don from South Aust.

Hi Don! Thank you for your nice comments. Looking at pictures of animals one can get some neat patterns. Of course, the dolphin shape helps because it is pretty streamlined. Cheers! Daniel

Thank you Daniel. It's always a great pleasure to watch your videos and this seems a very interesting project. I've done some basic carving but am willing to try this project to completion.

Daniel it has been some time since viewing one of your videos. Previously I have watched your wood turning and new shop videos. I am excited to see the wood carving series. Cheers.

Hi Bill! Thank you so much, my dear friend, for watching the video and for the nice comments! Although I have done a bit of carving in spoons and a couple of other projects, I am pretty new to this art. I love the fact that you do not generate as much saw dust and the chips are somehow more confined to a smaller area, besides you can do most of the process seating and relaxing (at least when it is whittling, not so much if you need to use a vise, chisels and mallets).Cheers! Daniel

    Hola Daniel:
Great minds must think alike. I did something very similar to your dolphin pattern for a friend. However, my pattern was 6’ long of a Marlin. He carves fish and asked me to come up with a pattern. My pattern was printed on my old HP plotter that I used in my stained glass pattern designs when I was in the business. I think he is still whittling away at wood and have not seen what he is doing. Great Video!!!

Hi John! Thank you kindly, my dear friend for watching and commenting the video! That seems to be a completely different scale of work, wow! 6 foot is what I am tall, hahahaha! Although I think it is easier to get the details well at a larger scale. Cheers! Daniel

Hola Pedro! Daniel
