  • Dolphin woodcarving, Part 2: Cuts using the patterns.
Hi my friends! Hi my friends! This is the second of a series of three videos. In the first part we are going to prepare the patterns needed for the carving of a dolphin in black walnut. In the second part we are going to use those patterns to make, with the bandsaw, a rough cutting of the blank. And in the third video we will use this rough blank to do the actual carving using manual tools.

    Disclaimer:
You, and only you, are responsible for your safety in the shop and for your health. The procedures shown in this video, (and my answers to the comments), although they are the ones I consider safe, are not necessarily so for every operator (wood turner, carpenter, etc.). Wood is a heterogeneous and unpredictable material, not two pieces are identical, even when they come from the same trunk of the same tree, shop tools and machines can cause damage to the operator, dust and other physical and chemical contaminants may cause disease and disorders when the operator does not take into consideration adequate protection. Always read operation manuals for your tools and machinery. This video can give you a point to start your research on what is the best for you, but, in any way is the only source of information. The level of experience of the operator is also a factor; procedures that may be safe for an operator that has a lot of experience may not be dangerous for an operator with less experience. If you do not feel safe or confident with a procedure you have seen in my channel, do not repeat it. Be safe and enjoy these activities.

Hi Alan! Thank you, my dear friend, for your always kind comments! I am almost finished with the editing of the last video, hopefully will get it uploaded in the next few days. I am satisfied with the end result, although I have lots to learn about carving and it has some minor details that I expect I will be able to correct in future carvings. Cheers! Daniel

One of the things I love about watching your videos is when a Ford ad comes on, it is in Spanish. CZcams doesn't seem to understand that you release videos in both English and Spanish. 🤣🤣🤣

Hi Richard! Hahhahahahahaha! That is really interesting, particularly because I am not filling in the language information in the video, hmmm! Perhaps CZcams can catch on my accent???? Hahahaha! Anyway, thank you kindly for watching and commenting! Cheers! Daniel

Hi Lou! Thank you very much, my friend, for watching the video and leaving a comment! My bandsaw is from Grizzly, the G0513X2BF, I believe is 17". The blade, though, I got from Cheers! Daniel Highland Woodworking, I put the link following:
      www.highlandwoodworking.com/woodturners-bandsaw-blades.aspx
It is the woodturner's blade, which has few teeth per inch and they are set, so they leave a wider cut, but it is great for cutting bowl blanks. This black walnut was really dry and hard (you will see it in the third video of the series I had to sharpen the knife very often to be able to cut it), but the bandsaw blade did not have any trouble to cut through it. I had a rake configuration blade before (the one from Highland is a hook configuration) and that one could not cut even softer woods when the piece was too wide. It was designed for finishing cuts (smoother) but it would burn the wood if trying to tackle a larger piece. The new blade leaves a slightly rougher cut, but cuts like going through butter. Cheers! Daniel
