This is an excellent example of making legacy sequel, really weaving old characters and callbacks into the story instead of forcing references and cameos.
Wish Star Wars had done this with their sequels. I feel like Top Gun did everything directly opposite, and itâs beautiful.
And without throwing race and sexual politics
It seems too easy and lazy even to make a new movie with the Maverick character and then blatantly rehash stuff from the first one like Great Balls of Fire and the shirtless men's game.
@@Garsons-oq4lh Yeah i agree. basically the same fuckin movie its cringe. theres TOO many callbacks to the original film it just gets a little absurd.
@@daudge5778 did they say ni**er in star wars? I have to watch it again
gotta admit they did that scene just right. a whole back ground and relationship set up in less that 3 minutes
As someone who still has not seen Top Gun, this was the scene that moved me most, and it was the sudden realization that this story was going to be a lot more heartfelt than I had anticipated.
@@FreshTillDeath56 You should wath the TopGun itself before watching it sequel, you will not appreciate it without knowing the story behind it.
@@jimmykudo11 Too late. I already saw Maverick two times :D I'm objective, I can enjoy things for what they are alone :)
@@FreshTillDeath56 Nice, Yeahh, If you have the time. Try to watch the TopGun (1986).
@@FreshTillDeath56 Nice, yeaaah, just go and objectively watch TopGun for what it is alone.
The looks on those pilots faceâs the following morning when they realized who they threw out was priceless lol
That was TOTALLY EPIC!
I did not even realize it before but thatâs a reference to the first movie when Maverick and Goose turned out who Charlie was!
Hangman's reaction is my favourite; he's thinking "Oh F---!"
Reminds us of the look on Maverick's face when he find out that it was Charlie whom he was flirting with the previous night.
I love how penny sees him in the window and realizes that maverick hasnât gotten over the incident of losing goose, so when he goes back to pay the tab she forced on him, she tryâs to back off a bit and say he doesnât have to. It was interesting to watch her get her payback for him always leaving and then having that face of remorse once figuring out he had to leave cause both the scars and love of being there go hand in hand.
2:47
That's women for you. They are sentimental messes but we love them for a reason. She totally got what was going on.
yeaaah. she sees Mav's window of the past and through his eyes looking through the window into Rooster's past, present and future.
Thats gpod analysis
@@johnotoole5786 I ended up seeing it in theaters twice, not cause I wanted to go see it again but cause friends, and itâs it interesting to see they even though some of the dialogue is very cheesy, they use subtle hints of what is emotionally wrong. They donât treat the audience too much like children.
This is why this movie is so great, No words, just looks, music, and feelings. Best movie to come out in a looooooong time.
Agreed
That's why they call it scars.. They heal, but never go away... You can forget they're there, but one day you'll run your fingers over them, and be reminded they're there, what caused them, why you have them, and you will have to deal with the memories of the past.
I remember the first Top Gun movie, going to the cinema with my parents to see it. Everyone was hyped. And now, 36 years later, seeing that scene, and the way Tom Cruise acted, i can imagine what other survivors feel. His acting is spot on.
Oh Man!!! This is articulation at it's best.. This is exactly what it did to me. Took me back in time and touched so many stages of my own life in that process.. well said!
me too. i was 15 when i saw the original Top Gun. still pulling for Time Travel where i can go back to those days of health :-)
True broo đ
I envy your generation who got to watch the original film as a kid or teen I am 28 and it's one of my favorite films. the experience back then and watching a sequel after such a long time must've been awesome.
@@uzairahmed4work As with a lot of sequels, i was a little nervous. Was the actor as i remembered, did the scriptwriters stay true to the story and characters, would the director know how to tell the story properly?
But, in my humble opinion, they did as expected and then some. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed the movie immensely.
Your time will come, and you will have a similar experience where you will be the one who saw the first movie. đ
Trauma and guilt at its worst. Maverick may put on a brave face, but he never forgave himself for the death of his best friend. To him, it might as well have been just yesterday.
Goose's death wasn't Maverick's fault. It was an ejection that went tragically wrong. The Tomcat sequence is:
. Pilot or RIO pulls the ejection handle
. 0.2 sec later, the canopy is jettisoned
. 0.4 sec later, the RIO'S ejected from the plane
. 0.4 sec after that, the pilot is ejected
Some F-14 crews had a 'contract' as to who made the decision to eject.
For some crews it was the pilot's call, others, it would be the RIO'S call. The problem would've been timing it right, in a flat spin with little chance of recovery. You don't want to be ejecting too close to the floor.
When an aircraft goes into a flat spin, the air is not traveling the correctly around the engine, causing it to stall. No power, no lift . The plane is now heavier than air and falls to the ground.
@@francessweeney2308 yet he felt responsible for it.. thatâs why he still has trouble letting it go even after 30 years.. i mean itâs sad really when the ending of OG with Maverick throwing Gooseâs dog tag into the sea was supposed to be the symbol of him moving on.. in reality he never did.
You never really move on from your friend or familyâs death. My friendâs mother passed away 15 years ago and it gets better but you never fully get over it.
Damn that flashback that he had from the 80âs from 1:39 to 2:37 really gave me nostalgia I really miss the good old days
This scene actually hurt when I first saw it
More like PTSD for Mav
@@raymondweaver8526 â â I know what you mean, but still very sad I can tell how much he misses Goose
Only thing we can do gentlemen, is stand back, cheer on the new generation, guide them, and show them we still pack a mean punch.
Me too
This scene when i first saw it in the theaters I was surprised and shocked seeing that retro stock footage flashback of the 86 film with Maverick and goose back then and when he died made me sad almost shed a tear. Man this movie was a roller coaster of emotions
Yea, I shed a tear or two or ten, my wife was like, are you serious, then realised, when you lose a brother in arms, this hit home.
I like how it also puts emphasis on all the young pilots singing along with Rooster. Over the next few days, Maverick has to train them all for a dangerous mission they might not come back from. To Mav, Goose's death is a reminder of how easily your life can tragically be cut short. It's not just Rooster he has to worry about; they could all die before it's their time.
That's like everyday life though isn't it you could go out to work or do anything and you could die you could get ran over you could get stabbed anything can happen if you think about it
The scene will forever, and always bring a tear to my eye. Dear Hollywood, this is how you make a movie.
Has anyone noticed how exactly alike miles teller looks like goose? He could pose as his son in real life
You mean father
@@bossstillen4390 miles teller is rooster's actor
Yup. When he first walked in, I thought for a second that Goose had walked in!
no I didn't notice

Amazing scene, outstanding movie. 10 out of 10. A real example that should be followed!
In my opinion, if the Oscars were awarded unbiasedly, and based only on acting prowess, Tom Cruise wouldâve had at least 3 - A Few Goodmen, The Last Samurai and Top Gun Maverick. Heâs just not an action star but someone who makes you nostalgic about life - happiness, sadness, memories, loss, success, failure, love, friendship, respect & much more!
Agreed. IMO I would add his role as Vincent in Collateral. He was great in that one as well.
@@Edsal23 absolutely agree mate! He nailed that one to perfection too!
They are biased towards sequels to action blockbusters
I'd add 'Interview With The Vampire' at least
@@dlc1119 Iâd concur mate
The hardest part for me is when she looks out the window and sees him like that, men tend to hide their pain no matter how much it hurts. Her seeing him tearing himself apart, alone...it happens too often.
1000%
This is so true. As a man I never want to burden others with my pain, and I donât want to look like I am weak or in pain, and donât want to be pitied by others.
@@johnpark7972 keep your pain between men, that's why they say we fight for the man beside us.
Guess Penny just learned what PTSD is.Good girl Penny!! Take care of him!!
Tom Cruise is a genius
The memories and the pain will always remain the same yes we move on but the guilt will always remain. Great scene love the way they kept it from the beginning to now Tom Cruise is an excellent actor..
I cried. I'm a grown man and I cried. That's what this scene is.
a tear drop fell....
The best movie ever! The part when she see him standing outside watching at Rooster broke me totaly.
i could feel his pain
That extremely rare GOOSEbumping feeling when a sequel is better than the origin, just OMG
I remember when I was a kid and watched Top Gun; every time Goose's death scene approached, I became sad cuz Goose was so nice and refreshing... d4mn, it always hits hard
I cried so much in this scene, damn it hits hard this flashback đâ€ïž
As soon as the old scenes pop up I knew the rest of the movie was going to be a success. This had me in tears.
Me was when they remade the carrier operations scene. Back then it was F-14, A-6, and A-7 now it's F/A-18 and F-35
He conveyed the ptsd and guilt of someone holding onto that for 3 decades
this movie really is a masterpiece.
Mav face says it all. Despite the 36 years that have passed, he still hasnât moved on from the incident.
Great acting scene from both of them pure emotions you could feel.
I expected absolutely nothing from this film but really enjoyed it, so over the top, it's great entertainment đ
Masterpiece of bring life of past into life now... Unreal how beautifully they do this! Thank you! I am older... I feel every bit of this!
Penny gets back at him for leaving lol
The scene which reminds me of past truma, left a very strong inpression on me.
This scene is absolutely perfect from a cinematographic point of view. Great work.
Saw the first at age 14. By 18 was in the reserves. Age 22, a 2LT in the Army. Turned 31 in the Kuwaiti desert 4 days after arriving, 8 weeks prior to OIF-1. We lost a few over there. 20 years later, and nearly 8 years after ending 21 years, I see this movie. This scene I (and many others) can relate to. Some things you can never get over. Hence why this movie, albeit naval aviation based, hit me hard.
Same here... USN 1987-2008

the part where Penny Benjamin sees him looking in the window is powerfulđȘ
Should have made a scene with Maverick visiting Goose is grave after this scene or later in the movie right before he left for the mission.
Too cliché... but that's my opinion...
He wouldn't be buried near the School where he died.. I'm pretty sure he would be sent back home.
@@Alvan81 true. Probably right.
Thereâs a lot to build on with Mavericks character especially with Duke Mitchell. Would love to see Dukeâs story.
Or just before they fly off for the mission he should of said to him your dad would of been proud of you

The nostalgia... That's what brings me this scene... I was 5 at that time... Remember my mom who died this year... Memories... â€ïž
The 2nd half of this scene had completely no dialogue. But the flashbacks, facial reactions, subtle looks, ... relayed so much more. This is how you tell a story without words.
It was perfectly written and performed after Top Gun itself! These two will always be my two all time favorite aviation movies for all my life! My Dad, god rest his soul, flew the KC 135 and many other planes in the Air Force that refueled the SR 71 & the U2! He did many things and will always be a hero to me! I love flying!!! I always will! Really feel for Maverick here, it wasn't his fault Goose it was a malfunction and Rooster (Goose's son) shouldn't really blamed him for his death
To bad he never had a heart to heart with Rooster explaining everything
How there was a malfunction with Goose's ejection seat/ canopy causing the accident
And he yanked his papers because he was trying to protect Rooster and how his mother made him promise on her deathbed that he wouldn't become a flyer everything was to keep Rooster from ending up like his father because he couldn't live through it twice
@@aliostrowski1935 Until he was ready, Rooster would not have heard a word
@@raymondweaver8526 I meant after he was ready
he doesnt you learn later in the movie he is mad at mavric for pulling his flight papers setting him back. mavric thinking rooster blames him for his dads death is all in his mind
I think in all was just the guilt heâs carried with him all these years. He knows it was a malfunction, but itâs his best friendâŠ. Guilt man just wonât go away.
ironically, she got him out of the bar before the song was about to start.
so.... both that and her guilt of doing so made Mav got off easily or he might even burst into anger/tears at the bar, well whatever debatable.
