The original quote is "Right or wrong, the customer is always right in matters of taste". The quote was made by store owner Harry Gordon Selfridge; nicknamed 'The Earl of Oxford Street' in London 1909.

Both mean the same thing really, the phrase was intended for salesmen who were told not to judge the customer if they wanted to buy a "hideous sweater" or "put ketchup on a steak" as business is business.

@@samsby14 True, but sadly customers tend to only remember the portion that "The Customer is always Right" and forget the rest of the phrase and throw hissy strops when they don't get their way

The list of writers included "Gerald Wiley"
who was in fact Ronnie Barker.
He submitted the work under a pseudonym
so it didn't get preferential treatment.

Their opening theme music, by the legendary and seemingly everywhere Ronnie Hazlehurst, has the distinction of being instantly recognisable, indelibly memorable, and completely without any identifiable tune. It's a work of art.

I had a boat customer wanting engine service parts. He asked for belts, so I went and looked up his correct belts and walked all the way back with them. Then he asked for the oil filter, looked that up and walked all the way back. This happened 12 times off his shopping-list. He had the WHOLE list, with part numbers, in his hand. Could have throttled him for wasting an hour of my time.

You know when these shows were screened on a Saturday night in the 1970s, video recorders were almost non-existent so people stayed in until 9pm so as not to miss shows like the Two Ronnies. Once the show was over, the pubs became full of people who had stayed in. That was the pulling power of quality comedy. Thanks for your reactions.

This reminds me of back in the 1980's when my Dad used to go to a little shop near us every Sunday morning to get his sweets before church.
One particular Sunday morning he went to the shop to get a quarter of either 'Cough Candi' or 'Aniseed Twist' and the lady behind the counter used to have very shaky hands. She started pouring the sweets into the bowl on the scales and she spilt loads of them all over the floor, anyway they had a Black Labrador dog that used to scoot along the floor on it's arse, and Dad happened to see it just as she picked the sweets up and put them in the bag.
He told her in no uncertain terms that she could keep her sweets and he never went back there again.

The interesting thing is that they did not consider themselves a "Comedy Duo" - just 2 people that starred on the same show. They refused any request to tour together as a comedy act and very rarely interviewed together. This was even though they were good friends

Can I humbly recommend their sketch series, The Worm Has Turned? 1970's, Women rule the world in black leather and men are wearing dresses and doing housework.TUT. Like you've got nothing else ever asked for :o)

One of my early service industry jobs was in a hotel. After I had been hired, I was taught "The customer isn't always right, you just have to make them think they are".
It works well most of the time. Defusing by agreement takes the wind from their sails and often deescalates a situation quicker.
However what you say about them after they leave is another matter.

Theme tunes were pretty big on shows back then. And if you're of an age you can recognize themes to comedy shows almost instantly. At least in Britain. They were often the biggest programmes on television. Admittedly, with three channels (4 by 1982 - the first show on Channel 4 was actually 'Countdown', from which ''8 out of 10 cats does Countdown' was derived) you could argue the competition was limited. In fact it made them focus much more on content because the potential viewership was much bigger for each channel. If you were getting audiences of 15 to 20 million in a country with a population of 50 to 60 million, that wasn't a bad percentage.

As a small child sometimes we took them out of our mouths and passed them to a friend to see if they wanted to finish off sucking them….disgusting!!!
