    Nice groups! Handloading is a rabbit hole, like everyone else said. I started a few years ago after my son passed away. We used to fish. That was always the thing we did together and sent pictures back and forth. Could not wet a line after and still can't. He took the love of fishing with him and when I get to see him again, I expect we will pick it back up, since there are quite a few fishermen who followed Jesus. Haha.
    So, decided to start reloading since it was something he would think was cool, but doesn't tear my heart out to do it. It is a good at home hobby that really pays off when you find that load and take a critter with it.
    Good luck and don't get frustrated when you run into loads now and again that look like a shotgun blast. Haha. Just use another powder and bullet combo and keep digging.

    Excellent addition to use your own reloads in testing. Try bullet seating depth in your loads based on examining bullet jump distance. In other words measure your distance to bullet engagement. Of course concentricity should be known and neck tension as well... You already make GREAT SHOWS , this more data will be nice.. Thanks

I think I was using IMR 3031 or a 24 something and 180 Speer. 1,000 yards that's awesome but a mile😮, don't know if I could see that far nowdays😅. Just curious what scope are you using. Keep going with your powder charge tests. Reloading manuals are pretty conservative when they list "MAX", I use powder manufacturer data for weight. There is usually a lower node near the start that will group really well then you'll see the groups start to open up as you progress to higher charge weights, then you will see them start to tighten back up (that's when you are getting into your higher node. )The nodes are even easier to spot with a good chronograph as the velocity spreads between .5 charge weight and the next will hit a dead spot with little to no gain in fps....just what I've noticed over the years.
    I've only had one powder give me a single node on the low end and everything else was garbage and that powder was IMR 4166.

    Good video. Congrats on the groups. Looks like you found two nodes. I have an auto powder dispenser also. I have found if I’m working up “match” quality loads I will program a charge weight .3 grns light and hand trickle to the final charge weight. My powder dispenser throws weights that usually within .1 grns of the selected charge weight. That said, one charge might be .1 light and the next charge spot on and the third charge .1 grn heavy. A lot of this variation depends on powder being used & dispensing speed selected. Depending on what your demands are for the ammo, that variation might not be an issue.

    Good reloading, and good results WTW. Just a note on the Intellidropper. I've been using mine for a good number of years, bought it just as it came out to replace my Hornady.
    I have found it is quite important to warm it up as advised in the manual. Let is stand for at least an hour while on before I start with loads. Then I do the powder cal, after that the normal calibration. Then the magic trick for me (I verify the loads with a laboratory scale), I usually choose three random weights, as example 35gr, 25gr and 55gr, and throw one charge of each. Mine nearly always is slightly out with the first, and second, and on the button with the third. After that, the loads are on the button to the second decimal of a grain.
    If I do not let the machine work a bit, my loads were always all over the show. On Saturday evening, I did 200 competition loads, and they were all within 0.02 of a grain with Winchester StaBall on the Intellidropper when verified against my laboratory (calibrated) scale.
    Thanks for another great video.

  • @motorgearhead
    @motorgearhead Před měsícem

    If you decide to geek out with the reloading, look into Quickload internal ballistics software. And then look up optimal barrel Time theory. Between the software and the node table you can shorten your load development considerably. Example usually will fine the node within .3 grns of where it’s calculated to be. Results I’m printing .4 MOA with 80 grn ELDS. The RPR in .223 has a long throat for long high BC projectiles. My OAL is 2.500”. You won’t find that in a loading manual but the software helps judge pressures and velocities before ever firing a round. It also gives me barrel time estimates so accuracy nodes can be found easily. Within your load range there are usually two nodes. One faster, one slower. One may be better than the other. Just depends. You may also need to true the QuickLoad calculation once you get velocity data. The type & case capacity will affect the calculation. Trying the software to the real world improves results. Works great on straight wall cases too.

    My favorite powder for .243 is IMR 3031 for most loads. That was 30 years ago when I last loaded for this rifle. Remington 700 ADL that would hold SUB MOA with hand loads, and MOA with factory loads. It likes the 70gr BTSP most of all but can squeeze the 100gr in just on the edge of sub-moa. With the price of Primers and Powder today, I don't load or shoot it. Haven't gone shooting this year at all due to cost and availability. Thanks for the great video too!!! Most of the bullets I loaded were Sierra and Sierra King, I did some Hornaday but was not impressed at the time with the accuracy. I'm sure it has changed with quality and loading info.

    it surprised me how much better the reloads are and what a difference a half grain of Powder makes.

    Welcome to the world of hand loading. You're going to get into this hobby so much I just know it. As much fun as your previous videos have been, this one and your future videos are going to be even more so. You can do so much more with hand loads - you decide what you want the load to be. No more relying on the factory loads. Now all you need is to get one of the newer chronographs that aren't the shoot through, less reliable optical chronographs. You're gonna really start having some fun now.

    Nice going WTW.
    Owned and shot a 243 for thousands of rounds. I found it pretty easy to get .5" five shot groups with it.
    Had great luck with Sierra 75 hpfb it's a superb bullet.
    The only knock on the 243 win in my experience was too much brass flow due to shoulder taper, I guess. Necks thicken, and partial separation happened to quickly.

    @user-po9hy9th7w Před měsícem

    ... I have a dedicated de-priming die (it just de-primes and doesn't resize) that I use to de-prime the brass before I clean it ... the spent primers have a lot of contaminants to contaminate your cleaning/tumbling media if you leave them in and the case primer pockets need cleaning too

    • @user-po9hy9th7w
      @user-po9hy9th7w Před měsícem

      ... also the spent primers may contain lead compounds that you really want to remain in and be discarded with the spent primer and not get mixed in with the dust your tumbler creates

  • @ThreenaddiesRexMegistus
    @ThreenaddiesRexMegistus Před měsícem

    Great job! That is very respectable accuracy. Your biggest accuracy gains will come from good case preparation, including a decent case-mouth chamfer to avoid bullet heel damage, and also in fine-tuning the bullet jump to the throat. Most of my rifles have the bullet just nudging the throat, but not so far as to jam while removing an unfired round. Powder volume is probably the last thing to work on but needs consideration when working with throat engagement. Best approached from safe lower levels.
    Glad to see you’re using a dedicated priming tool - the press lacks sensitivity. Keep a good watch on case length with the .243, they’re great growers. Once the neck pinches on the chamber, pressures will go sky-high real quick.
    Sod the chronograph! Better to have accuracy than speed. Doesn’t matter how fast it goes if you miss! But it’s always nice to know velocity for calculating down range performance.
    It’s also useful to determine the standard deviation between shots. If you’re getting single figures you’re set for long-range stuff.

I'm still learning new tricks. I load for better accuracy if a factory load is substandard. Most of all, save money. Examples are Weatherby Magnums, 375 H&H, 300 H&H, 416 Rem Mag, etc. If ammo cost more than $40/Box, I will load for it. Simple satisfaction of rolling your own is the best way!

    I load Nosler Boat Tail Ballistic Tip 55gr. Sierra has a Flat Bottom Plastic Tip in 55gr. 55gr are the lightest I've seen so far. I can get them going 4100fps in a single shot or a Ruger.

    Yep. I love it. .243win was my first handload. H4350 and IMR4350 are great .243win powders too and ACC2520 as well

    Boy that's a lot of Varget for a .243. I usually use 35g with a 100g bullet. I bet your muzzle velocity was easily over 3600fps

    Welcome to the reloading world! Be careful it’s addicting!!

    Work different seating depths on that load and you'll probs improve again.
    Dont get to deep with the .243 loading and the fast boolets, you are just shooting the barrel out trying to get fractions of an inch better.

    I like the .243 - though I’ve never used it for varmints. In fact, the longest shot I ever made on a buck was with this caliber.
    That being said, I’m jealous of your reloading supplies (primers and powder); because I can find neither online. It really troubles me, to be true. It’s hard for me to invest in the stupid costs of primers if I can’t get the powder to go with it (and visa versa). Apparently, you know people lol

    ~41 gr of varget and 70 gr nosler ballistic tips have always been a staple in every 243 that I've loaded for.
