As a model it is important to know the Do's and Don'ts of the industry or the unwritten rules that every client, agent and photographer expects you know. Knowing these rules will prevent you from getting blacklisted and will hopefully increase your chances of getting your next gig.

I'd die inside if I ever forgot to shower. Basically everyone knows about how judgemental they can be
1. Dont ask about pay rates
2. If you booked a job and your over 18 dont bring your parents or any other distractions
3. Never ask when your getting paid
4. do not be a diva
5. don’t ask the photographer to see the pictures only if they offer you.
6. If you walk down the runway don’t smile unless they tell you to.
7. Make sure to stay clean and practice good hygiene.
8. Dont chew gums on set
9. Don’t eat while working unless they offer food
10. Do not take criticism too harsh

I organize my own modeling and photography group and for this one shoot that I had I had 2 male models. One of them said several negative things about the other male model to me. I overlooked it thinking that maybe he was in a bad mood. I invited both to my next photo shoot and he did it again as well as talking about a female plus size model. After that I never invited him back. It's negative energy and there was no need for him to do that. Thank goodness nobody heard him. I didn't want people thinking that I had people like that at my photo shoots.

The model agency sounds sad and predatory. Can’t ask about payment or bring a parent is very weird. You have to be super nice and no attitude. It seems like you have to be basically a piece of meat and keeps their mouth shut. I don’t like this.
There is the unfortunate predatory and unrealistic expectations sides of modelling; however, a good attitude and respect is professionalism. You dont cuss or go off at your boss at a typical desk job, you shouldnt do it for modelling; as you're representing your own character and want to be referred again other places. The industry is changing, agencies now want models with personalities; which give more room for freedom and creativity in the work of the model.
Well, it really really depends on the agency, some are more friendly than others, and there are plenty of them.
But it’s their job though. They’re literally being hired to be a breathing mannequin with pretty face. It’s a shallow and vain industry for sure, so whoever finds the appeal of it and wants to do it, good for them.
Reina Algabri / I completely understand what you’re saying, however, I don’t think these rules are subjective to the modeling industry. You shouldn’t do any of these things when trying to get a job, it makes you look unprofessional.
If your a kid you legally have to bring a parent
heavily scented deodorants, perfumes or body lotions are also strongly discouraged, basically any smell that can transfer onto a designers clothes are a nono! just bathe and be neutrally clean is the way to go :))
the second i grow 6 inches and develop an outgoing personality at the age of 23, i will become a model and swear to follow these rules!

omg this explains so much. like when i did photoshoots that were then to be chemically developed i ALWAYS, rocked it. so freaking hard.
i dont think i made the link that because i was able to look at the photo and modify my vibe and it probably made it less, consistent ? and get less different shots?
i remember saying word for word like : you have one chance to go good on a polaroid or film. literally my best ever face portrait was made on a super oldschool square frame camera it was broken i remember him telling me : okay i can only see you from upside down ' and the photographer bless his heart we did. omg the DOPEST work ive ever done. with anybody .

About sweat, how model not sweating during runway? 🤔 Anyone can explain it? Oh ya, I am not a model not even close. I am just curious.

Jethro Teece it’s not just walk, models have to maintain looking good too
Deodorant, it’s only a short walk usually so there’s not much time to sweat and it’s not very physically demanding, there’s makeup artists backstage for touch ups too
Botox. Actors use Botox as well so they don’t sweat on red carpets.

You can and should ask when you get paid to your agency; you are working together, not one for another. I’ve seen so many cases of models not getting paid at all. So you should read thoroughly your agency contract which says how long you usually get paid. But whenever you need money to survive or when a client takes longer than usual, you can check with your agency, it’s just an info you are asking, and they could eventually chase the client for payment, but know that your agency (if they’re ethic) also hasn’t been paid by that same client and is waiting like you.

Jordan yeah yeah I know, even though this varies with the agency, my point was that some clients take longer to pay, and we have all the right to know and request that information from the agency. I mean, usually clients I work with have 1 month to pay, but some I work with are more prestigious and are given 3 months. Again, my agency would only pay once a month each model, except if particularly asked otherwise for a specific reason. Money isn’t a taboo and should be discussed with the agency.

as a make up artist, yes, the better the model and more professional the nicer they are to work with.
the ones just starting sometims try to act all diva and look down at their phone while I'm trying to paint their faces. it makes the whole process a lot longer, and whole crew gets annoyed.
I'm totally ok with retouching your mkp after u've eaten, it's a human thing to do, unless there really is no time for touch ups in which case I'll tell as soon as I can.
I only ever had few models smelling foul, but I always have antiperspirants with me for models to use and tell them to go n freshen up. sorry not sorry.

Work on your body now, but while you’re working you can still learn about the industry you’re about to get into so that you’re well prepared for it

As a model myself I always ask payment rates and when I am getting payed , big designer brands such as Burberry can take 8-9 months to pay a model which is a fucking joke , so I have always found if you pester them a bit they will pay quicker. Also the photographers do not care if you ask to see the pictures , you have every right to ask to see the pictures. Rest is right tho

A photographer approached me the other day and is wanting me to model for his agency. I took his information. Flattered he thinks I could be a model. Was wanting me to send him my headshot and I'm like yeah um ok. Also seems to be tied to some different charitable organizations which is always good. I have a cousin that models in ATL. I could probably get some tips from her. I guess we'll see what happens next...
