  • I decide to set my Taycan a bit of a challenge and see if it can make it to a charger with a low state of charge. Let's find out out well it did.... And more importantly - Is the PCM accurate?
    Thanks for watching!

On average, I think the Taycan does a pretty good job of indicating how much range is left in the battery. However, I should note that the actual range will still be a bit shorter than the Taycan indicates if your entire drive is on the highway and your speed fluctuates around 90Mph. That is, at the beginning of the drive, the Taycan will indicate too much range. As the drive progresses the difference between forecast and reality will narrow. As a result, if you also know your way around the navigation system well, you can pretty accurately determine if you're going to make the desired charge stop. I always look simultaneously at the projected range of the battery and the actual distance to the charging stop. The only thing that frustrates me greatly is the reliability of the information about the charging stops that will be on your route. I experience it so often that some of the charging stations are defective while your navigation system indicates that they are still functioning with the result that there is simply no charging port available. There are also plenty of charging stations that simply lie about their charging capacity. They state that the charging stations have 300kw capacity when in reality 300Kw is distributed over 2 or 4 connections. Recently, a new frustration has arisen because on my regular charging stop going home, electric trucks are now charging. They are so big that they occupy two spots while only 1 charging station is used. Of course, your navigation system does not know this and it tells you that you can charge there while in reality you cannot charge there at all (and a truck does not finish charging after 20 minutes). I hope Porsche will upgrade / update its navigation system so that you are able to exclude some brands of charging stations from the route calculation. Then at least you can avoid the unreliable charging station providers. In addition, it would also be helpful if you are enabled to report a faulty charging station so that the number of false positive reports of available charging stations is reduced.

Agree that the PCM / PCS tends to pretty good from a range perspective. Also agree that infrastructure is still a bit, well, rubbish really (depending which country you're in). It is improving, but too slowly.

In my personal experience the PCM range manager is predicable and very accurate. There seems to be even a little buffer beyond 0%… I arrived at chargers with 4-5% left many times and one time I managed to arrive with a perfect 0%

Charging from 10%takes a fair bit to build the rate of charge until you hit 20%. Then if the station is full or fills up you don't get full whack! On a 350Kwh you might get 175? When you read the small print it says shared!

Thank you for your video! Im about to buy a used Taycan, The price for used Taycan seem to fall substantialy. Maybe you could make a video about degregation of your batterie and how the range holds up in winter time? Greetings from Munich

I went into the MB Tunnel driving from Italy to France with 3% (Model 3 LR), planner said I'd get to Sallanche (around 30km away) with 3%. My wife was a bit nervous but I trusted in the GOM and yup as ever it was right. And that's the thing, reliable routing, reliable chargers, plug and charge makes it all so simple. I've done UK / Italy in the Model 3 7 times, never a problem with charging or range. Journey time is the same as it used to be in the diesel. Pity the infra isn't as good in the UK but I'm sure it will get there. Have to say I'm tempted by a Tacan, sold a Cayman GTS to buy the Tesla but it would have to be used for me, PAYE so no tax breaks for me.

Glad it was accurate - it's so important with an EV! Plenty of used Taycan stock available at good prices, might be a good way to get onboard. Infra is improving in the UK, just far too slowly.

    😂😂 Wonderful! 👍 👍 👍
Yessss, well I drove my Tesla 100D sometimes down to 5 or 4 % and it was no problem. But! I always took 4 % space extra while driving. If you get stuck because of an accident on the road or traffic jam or construction 🚧, it's better to have a little juice extra.
With my Taycan 4S Cross Turismo I got at 10% deepest by now, because of the lower efficiency of the Porsche.
The PCM was always right at my trips as you said correctly. Only missing about 1 to 3 % at the end.
    👍👍👍✌️🙋🏼‍♂️

I'm considering a Taycan 4s Cross Turismo to replace my Panamera Hybrid. One thing I will definitely miss is the noise but I am sure the savings will sooth that.
Big thing though is the range and range anxiety. 90% of the time will be charged at home or work but I will also do some trips to Europe and don't want to be constantly charging or worried I can't charge it.
What is realistic range in these, I think it's stated as around 290 to 300 with the battery plus pack?

You always get the big battery. 😉
If you drive at 180 km/h to 240 km/h in Germany, you will get a range about 250 km maximum. But in Germany you have a lot of IONITY chargers. And if you want a soft ride you should think about a one month registration at Tesla SuC. It's about 13 € and you get fast charging that works always! 👍 Price is about 38 to 45 cents per kWh... 😉

I agree - I think that buffer is important as you never know what's going to happen! Last thing you want in an EV is to run out of electric juice...

Well, real life situation last Sunday in the iX M60, I needed to drive from Finchingfield in Essex to Camberley, about 100 miles and had only 120 miles of range when I started. Started off as usual, but noticed I was dropping miles from the range faster than I was moving, so, two things needed, a little less right foot and secondly, turn off the wipers that were running at full speed. Yes, the weather was atrocious, but had to start protecting the use of charge to get home without having to visit a charger. Fortunately, by the time I hit the M25, it was running between 50 and 60 mph so my charge started increasing against actual travel. However, the M3 was shut for the weekend, so it added another 20 miles to get around it and get home. I got home with 20 miles charge left, no real anxiety, because I could have found a charger, but prefer to charge at home. Moral of the story, expect the unexpected and having a major motorway closed for bridge removal added enough miles that it would have run out without me modifying my driving. The journey took 3 hours instead of two hours, but no stress. BTW, still loving the M60, a car that looks like your Dad would have bought it, but drives like a supercar! Range now down to 288 miles per 100% charge!

That sounds like it got a bit hairy! It's the stopping and starting which isn't good for your range. If you can keep a nice constant speed that seems to work best...

My i4 M50 BMW doesn’t restrict the power in any noticeable way at low SOC. I’ve been as low as 7% once and on multiple occasions around 10% and the car has a lot of punch even at the ECO Pro drive mode. I seriously considered a used Taycan 4S but I’m happy with my choice. Anyway both are fun cars to drive so I’m splitting hairs. ❤

Interesting to hear that - the Taycan is a bit rude 😆 It will throttle whenever it decides to! There seems to be no set level...

@@TABonTV In fairness, Porsche is a bit behind BMW in electrification of their cars. That is a big consideration why I eventually went with BMW even though my heart wanted a Taycan. Porsche's next gen of EVs (from the Caymans) should be much smother with less bugs. But by then, BMW will release their M3 EV which is expected to be nuts. Either way, it will be fun. Cheers mate.
