    Unless you are a gear head and have some deep pockets. I don't recommend you buy one. I was an Army mechanic for 10 years and worked on thee vehicles all of the time. These vehicles have issues and require constant maintenance. Most issues came from the generator/alternator, power steering and starters. Some issues where human made. People not waiting for the glow plug wait light to go off before starting the engine. It will start at first but after a while the glow plugs will start to swell/glow plug controller will go out. They also have a PCM that likes to go out from time to time. People that don't know any better will try to use eather to get them to start. Not a good idea. If the glow plugs swell you will catch hell trying to replace them. If you still want to buy one go for it. Just keep in mind that you will need to have plenty of tools/know how to keep these bad boys running smoothly especially if you live in the colder climates. Good luck all! ;)

      let's not forget the fact that nearly every one of them is driven by people fresh out of high school and fully aware that it is not their own vehicle.
      If you get one off a private owner you can at least have some form of assurance as to what's been going on, assuming the owner refurbished everything important.

      Most of the problems and horror stories with maintaining military hummers in active service comes from the fact that the military is not allowed to use aftermarket parts, absolutely everything it uses must be tied to a supply contract.
      That means an AM General alternator going out because it's badly made will result in an identical badly made AM General alternator replacing it. Civilians on the other hand have the luxury of the open marketplace where it's usually going to be a one time matter of adapting a different part to work.
      The military also can't do things like a Cummins swap, so whatever issues it has with the engine are only fixed when the military tells AM General to send them better engines.
      This problem is the main reason why the military dumped AM General, and awarded the replacement to the reliability king, Oshkosh.

    @TysonCapel23 Před 6 lety +14

    You don't need an sf97 document to get a title for a Humvee. It'll also work with a bill of sale which is a much cheaper option to go with. When you go to get a title you'll have to provide an invoice showing that you purchased a vehicle for tax purposes and to show that you are the one who actually purchased the vehicle. You will also need to have a VIN check done on the vehicle. You can obtain a title without registering the vehicle and inspection does not have to be done other than a VIN check in most States when obtaining strictly a title. If you do go to register the vehicle on your state requires safety and emissions you will have to add some things to the Humvee so it will pass safety. You are required to have a light for your license plate however aside from this in most States that is mainly the only thing you have to install on the Humvee to make it legal because it is already equipped with all the other appropriate things necessary to pass that is if the vehicle has been gone through and you check the brakes and make sure everything in that regard are functioning properly.
    A lot of states are now catching on to these Humvees being purchased off govplanet and are putting in regulations to prevent them from being registered on Road. You have to go through several hurdles to get them Street legalized in the states that are buckling down on these regulations.

    I've street legalled a "homemade motorcycle" (ohv with swapped frame in a not-dualsport-friendly state). Street legaling these should not be hard. DMV form signed by state police saying theyve inspected the vin, and either (depending on state) a signed statement by you or DOT inspection signed by a dealership/mechanic attesting that it has all required DOT approved lights, tires, and a horn. Tho this was the process to do a bike, I imagine it should be just about identical..

    This is not a Hummer. Hummers are inspired by this, which is actually an Am General HMMWV, but the Hummer is a luxury rendition. HMMWV means Highly Mobile Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, and can be referred to as a Humvee.

    • @MisterJ.J.
      @MisterJ.J. Před rokem

      Decades ago, military service people in the field originally nicknamed the HMMWV a Humvee and Hummer too. Later General Motors trademarked and marketed the Hummer name to sell H1, H2, and H3's. H1s and the middle third of the H2 were designed and built by AM General at the former Hummer factory. H3's were completely a General motors Hummer design based off of the Chevy Colorado and GMC canyon truck frames. They are all great medium duty off-road vehicles.

    The first Humvee I ever bought from govplanet took 90 days before it was released to me. The second one took about 95 days before it was released to me. If you have an issue with them going to be on the time frame they list call them. At about the 94 day mark for the second Humvee I gave them a call and said hey you guys haven't released the item to me yet and it's been past 90 days. Well they were on the phone with me they called the necessary Department to get the Humvee released. I was then able to pick it up the next day. If you have this issue just give him a call they're pretty good at working with you most of the time.

      That is actually a great question, I am assuming here because I am not ex military. However I am sure the process for the background check will be shortened. That is if they actually are working on your file. This company is extremely backed with getting the paperwork done up they sell 200-300 items every auction they have! I am sure it really has nothing to do with a quote "BACKGROUND CHECK" I think a background check takes 2 weeks max per person.

      tom loong most of these Humvees come with 3-speed transmissions and top out at about 60 miles an hour. If the speed doesn't bother you then longer trips aren't too bad as long as you change out the seats with good civilian ones. They Ride nice and smooth but they're a bit loud however you can reduce the sound Levels by spraying a rubberized coating or a coating similar to Line-X inside the cab and also on the underside of the hood or for the best sound deadening spray the whole vehicle in it cuz it significantly reduces the vibrations and reduces sound from the engine.
