Thinking about buying a US Military surplus Humvee?
gear-report.com/what-does-a-s...
This video shows the condition our 2nd Hummer was in when we purchased it from the USMC, as well as some highlights of repairs and upgrades required to get it running and roadworthy.
Correction: video states 12k axles. I believe they are actually 10,300 Lb axels.
We took a big risk and bought a non-running HMMWV for sale at Govplanet.com
Getting it running was a bigger challenge than we had hoped. But we worked hard to resurrect and upgrade this beast... and saved a TON of money in the process.

So you drained the fresh water, salt water, windshield, radiator, diff, trans, brake and engine fluids from that one drain hole, and behold, it's starts!Sweet!
If that is what you got from this, then sure. lol :)
Thanks everyone for watching. Never did a "Premiere" on YT before. What did you think?
Whatever negative others say...Willys and humvee are part of history:) I'm not American but this is the badass vehicle I want ever since! And I'm proud owner if ever I have one of this marine's fave vehicle...good choice:)
Thanks! We certainly agree that there is a lot of historical significance in both the earlier jeeps and the current Humvees.
@@GearreportdotCom I read some comments..found out haters any where;) don't mind them bro..do your stuff makes you happy..and others don't care about history to fade but you keep bringing it out to life:) makes me laugh they think you innovate it...man they don't understand restoration! Here in my country they restore them 100%...and that's the value of restoration..history! Lol...
The close up of the sump horror was .... life transforming.
And almost heart-attack inducing!
must say I learned a few things I never knew about Humvee, thanks.
You are very welcome.
Congratulations. I always wanted one for off road purposes. Mainly to blow past everyone else getting stuck. Could be one hell of a rig for off road
That would be a really slow "blow by everyone". LOL
You don't drive these like most folks drive jeeps... ie. spinning tires and slingin' mud. HMMWVs are much better suited to a slow crawl, in most cases.
Hey GEAR-REPORT,ignore the negative comments,i appreciate the way you explain everything.
Thanks!
I get it... some folks think social media is best used to take a dump on everything and everyone. I try to keep the perspective that those trolls are sometimes mildly entertaining... but that is the extent to which I value their input. :)
Well... also... the trolls feed CZcams's search algorythm and actually help drive more views of every video they comment on. So, there's that too. :)

Such a badass ride!
Way to go Jeff! Glad to see your project working out. Chuck
Thanks, Chuck!
Very interesting look at one of these great trucks. I always loved these things from afar..
It's OK to love them up close as well. :)
Thank you.
You are quite welcome!
That is a neat spare tire carrier! Great video.
Thanks. I haven't seen many like it.
Keep working on it, all these others don't own one, if you like the project, make it yours and when your driving down the road - SMILE and WAVE

Amazing bit of kit
Thanks! Glad you like it.
Those are the trucks I used. M1054a2 TOW. The traversing unit is a 68lb central piece that the m220 tow/m41 saber sight, launch tube and electrical connections/controls mounted to.
Thanks for the insight.
That thing is so epic!
Thanks. You should see our latest HMMWV. :)
Nice build. I can tell you enjoy and appreciate these monsters of a truck. My son is actually saving to get one by his senior year. He is in the tenth grade and always on the auction site. Keep it up. Thanks fir sharing.
Of course, and good luck to him!
Gear-Report.com thank you!!
Had the glass delamination issue with my Snatch land rover, on mine it was the binding agent between the glass and the perspex that clouded up. After taking the perspex off and letting the binding agent sit for a while it cleared up.
I have seen a few people solve this by removing the outer layers. I am hesitant to do this since the outer layers contain the shattered bits of glass in an accident or incident. I really don't want little glass fragments going everywhere.
The TU mount is for a TOW ITAS system. It's used to store the TU when not mounted in the TGPK.
Thanks
Good work.
Thanks!
Beautiful slantback... best configuration. I love it.
Thanks!
@@jeffcress2413 There is a big community for surplus military vehicles here in Germany. A Humvee is very hard to get in a great configuration (like seen here with a slantback). I'm looking for a good deal since a long time :-) You made the right decision. Wish I was in the US, because you can get a good one for cheap money. A good Humvee in Germany will cost you 50.000€, while in comparison a perfectly fine german "Wolf" will cost you only around 10.000€.

That is awesome!

@@GearreportdotCom as soon as it is ready I will send you a message.
The weird ring next to the gunner's platform is a stowage mount for equipment that would be mounted on the turret during use. Sighting systems, and other equipment that would need to be brought into the vehicle and locked in place for transport.
Good to know, thanks.
Good walk around and explanations. Im looking forward to getting mine in 2 months :-)
How is it?
Excellent
Glad you like it!
That hummvv looks like it's been thru hell n back
Yep. Amazing how well it cleaned up.
Good Job!!!
Thanks!
The irony of what is presumably a desert theatre vehicle coming to you with a sump full of water is brilliant.
While I get that... the HMMWV was designed back when the US expected the next war to be in Europe or USSR. It wasn't really designed to be a desert vehicle. That is just where they have gotten the most use in recent memory.
@@GearreportdotCom Yeah; politics, eh? Which makes it even dafter that the engine got filled with water, to my eyes! Rains a lot here in Europe =:-))
LoL
How's the water get in there

Great video!!!! I like all the details that you explained. Didn't know there was two different suspensions on these. Sounds like the A2 Humvees with all the improvements are the best ones to have. I like all the improvements you've made. Now I know what to look for. Thanks for all the info --Tim

You might find this interesting as well... gear-report.com/hmmwv-for-sale-the-battlewagon-2-0-could-be-yours-m1045a2-usmc-humvee-hummer
@@GearreportdotCom I worked at Hummer R and D in livonia Michigan and when they were upgrading the old m998 base hummers, and putting armor plating on the bodies, they found out their calculations were dead wrong and that the 998 suspension was not going to hold up to 10,000 lbs of extra weight. They blew out quite a few 998 suspensions before they figured out they had to upgrade the suspension too. Unfortunately 100's of the upgraded 998's were already shipped out because the army needed them badly and of course the 998 suspensions blew out in the field under the pressure of the weight, lol, and we had to ship the upgraded suspension parts to where they needed them. It was major AM GENERAL screw up that cost a lot of money to AM GENERAL, and they never got those cost back. They had to eat that extra cost.
@@richardtorz2164 Interesting.
I'm troubled that you are concerned with AMG losing $, but no mention of the lives lost when these HMMWVs failed in the field. :(
@@GearreportdotComYou are correct, i should have mentioned the loss of life, but was more concentrated on the original post about suspension failure of such heavy vehicles, that's all. No do not get wrong brother, the loss of life when equipment fails is so much greater than anything else, and i being a retired vet myself knows this all to well with seeing friends lost to equipment failures. That is something that is something that is of greater importance when designing anything, it needs to keep people safe. The neglect on Amg designers did cost lives, many lives, unfortunately that issue was never considered when the redesign came up and there was no acknowledgement by the company for those losses of life. i just didn;t address that issue with it because pretty much everybody knows what happens when people safety is not considered first and foremost when designing something.
@@GearreportdotCom And by the way, it was a good job restoring that beast to original as much as possible, parts are hard to find sometimes and when you do find them, they can cost an arm and a leg at times lol. The love you put into making that hummer from the time you got to the time you video'd it shines through, it does show. History should not be sent to the junkyard crusher unless it has absolutely lived out it usefulness.
I wish I'm there this is my paradise
Very cool project. Back in the 90's I saw one of these ex military humvees on the road here in Australia. It was LHD (Australia is RHD), had US plates on it and was being used to tour the world according to the map painted on the side of it. There were brand new civilian spec vehicles available here for a short time but were horrendously expensive and were way too big. I believe the Queensland Prison Service used them as perimeter patrol vehicles but they were not very reliable and didn't last too long. But anyway that's a real cool truck.
Very cool. Sounds like an AM General promotion.
This is great I hope everything is going well for you.! That water (oil) in the bottom of the engine... LOL
Try he HMMWV has run great for over 4000 miles since this video was made.
The traversing unit mount is for a TOW II Missile system. When the TU/Tube/Sights are not mounted on the roof the TU can be stowed inside the vehicle.
Thanks for the info!

Thanks! We are enjoying it a lot.
Brownells just came out with a semi auto minigun which would be expensive.... but awesome to mount in that gunner position.
LoL. Yeah. $15k, isn't it? I'll talk to them about it. We work with Brownells a lot. I've talked to another company about putting one on the HMMWV for a demo as well. Empty Shell.
Nice!
Thanks!
You were right about getting the overdrive transmission. However, I can attest to rebuilding many engines that were driven hard and fast.
Thanks.
You mean the engines blew even WITH a 4 speed?
I don't doubt that.
But some folks run their 3 speeds way too fast, basically asking to dump parts along the highway.
I was a 3521, 3522 for most of my six years in the Marine Corps. I couldn't tell you which of the transmissions was behind the engines I had to rebuild but the final drives on military HMMWV's are not speced for high speed on road use. I have seen several on the internet that have had newer Duramax engines installed that out perform the older 6.2 and 6.5 liter engines on and off road.
@@hudsondonnell444 Understood. The 4 speed transmission is the same as the civilian Hummer. So, keeps rpms in the right range for highway driving.
I'm used to using side mirrors only. 10 years truck driving and my Suburban has the barn doors so the is a big ole blind spot in the rearview mirror.
I fixed a word and the like you guys did dissapeared.
Not even sure what that means.
I think the dual latch on the seat belt is so there is no restricting loop over the soldier's arm/shoulder when exiting in a hurry.
I think you are correct
Exactly correct
Ours never had seatbelts...lol However, the shoulder belt is removed while you’re expecting contact, while the lap belt keeps you in the vehicle. The doors always flew open.
Que bueno tener uno los felizito👍👍👍👍👍👍
I really enjoyed that truck. :)
WOW!
Thanks! We feel the same way. :)
I drive OTR and I delivered a load to the AM General plant in Mishawaka Michigan, they have a test track there and let me tell you THEY TEST THE HELL out of these before they leave there, I would kill for that job !!!
I would love to see their test track. Maybe some day...
Gear-Report.com
You can see it from Google maps, the sky view doesn’t do it justice though, it’s curves are banked at probably 40 degrees and it has a hill that’s almost straight up, a person couldn’t walk up it !! It is awesome to watch them test the new ones that’s a fact !!
@@vsetkoumiera7683
I worked at Modineer in Niles that initially made parts for these that made their way to assembly at the Mishawaka plant
The two buckle seatbelts are so you do not get caught in your belt when you exit the truck. Kinda smart when you think about it.
Well, yeah. That makes perfect sense. Thanks!
That engine running sounded like a scene on the exorcist when she was screaming. Truthfully im surprised it was running.
You and me both!
But it has about 4k miles on it since then.
If I recall correctly, that circular mount-looking thing by the gunners step is the pedestal for a TOW rocket launcher mount.
Correct! More correct it was designed specifically for the "TOW 2 "launcher.
I considered buying one of these just a few months ago.
After seeing your video and adding up costs, I realize its just not that important to me to own one.
Looks cools. Sounds cool. Im sure is fun to drive but also seems like it comes with all kinds of problems in paper work and repairs to deal with.
Thanks for sharing.
These definitely aren't for the faint of heart. If you just want to drive it and aren't interested in working on it, then you either need deep pockets and a good HMMWV shop on speed dial, or to buy a model HMMWV and enjoy that one instead. :)
I like them, but I like having something to work on. They definitely aren't for everyone.
Alot of people don't know but if you ever get pulled over for speeding in a mil truck the cop is full of it. The paint is laser and radar absorbing
Somewhat, but not totally radar absorbing. :)
Speeding? Good luck. Over 60mph I'd worry about stopping. ☺
@@uncleeddie5813 the early HMMWVs with the 3 speed and smaller brakes top out around 57 miles per hour. This one will do 75 all day long and has larger brakes.. 😁
@@uncleeddie5813 brake upgrade is usually the first thing that should be done.
@@GearreportdotCom thank you for the info. ☺👍
Your traversing unit is for your TOW Gun it’s a Missile launcher you just bought a TOW gun truck you would have a collar that attaches to the gun and it goes on that traversing unit to store it when not in use. you would have a rack in the trunk area that held your Missiles that when you unlatched the trunk in the front the A-gunner can feed the gunner the Missiles while in the cabin rather than going out😃👍
They removed the tow missile rack during demil. I know the traversing mount held something with the TOW system, just haven't seen one actually in place on the mount. :)
Gear-Report.com yea not as impressive kinda is what it is but you should definitely get a up amored truck as well that held the machine guns and then you’ll have your own little CAAT (Combined Anti-amour Assault Team) pair😃 I like what you’re doing those trucks can go though a hell of a beating and keep going!
@@joncarlodagle Thanks. Since I have no use for or access to a TOW missile system, we are building this as an M1043 machine gun truck. We have the gun mount and chicken shield. Haven't started on the GPK yet. We have an airsoft M249 to play with and for display, but have access to various machine guns to mount for events. We try to walk a bit of a line in terms of keeping it outwardly military looking, while upgrading some of the creature comforts a bit so that it is more comfortable around town. :)
I am a diesel mechanic in Alaska, i work on concrete mixers mostly, i have wanted to try someday to build an off road mixer on a HEMET chassis. But yeah it would be fum to get a Humvee project as well.
So, get one. No time like the present. 😎
That is a great idea, an old Oshkosh should be available at auction.
Talk about an off road capable cement pumper...... A1 idea I hope you really do it some day bro.
I’ll give you my 2 cents, try to get one of the quad cab chassis, they had AC and a much more comfortable interior overall. Good luck.
Man I can’t wait to a slant back just like this one here , but I don’t want the turret on the top, I have so many plans for it as well !!
When are you getting one?

Also would be an awesome candidate for a Cummins swap. A good ol 12 valve mechanical. No computer.
Some people do Cummins swaps. I haven't jumped in quite that deep.. yet.
Crazy
Indeed.
But what tipped you off?
The two part seat belt design is for quick exits... if the seat belt was one piece it would have the potential to snag on the soldiers gear
Awesome. Thanks!
Listen people everyone can do whatever they want with your money. But for $5000 you can go on almost any government auction and buy almost any Humvee in almost any condition even with very little to zero engine hours on them (not used).
Post some links to late-model, running HMMWVs available for purchase today with full working turrets for $5k. I'll buy every one of them right now. Hell. I'd buy every running late model HMMWV without turrets or doors for $5k each. I would even buy late model non-running HMMWVs for $5k each. You even can't get an A2 HMMWV rolling chassis to your door for $5k... with no engine or driveline.
*Spoiler* You won't post any links because if you really do search for a link you'll find the best you can do are some auction listings with a STARTING price of $5k. Log into the auction site and look at what the CLOSING price on those HMMWVs is... it aint $5k. Not even close. LoL
But what do I know. I've only been doing this for a few years. :)
Lol good luck with that.
I have a set of 4 nice seats that ill be ready to part with soon that fit in my hmmwv. Sliding rails, black cloth bucket seats. Cheap. Nothing wrong with them, just getting different seats If ur interested let me know.

I envy the Americans for these Great looking Humvees . I fell in love with them after watching "Black Horn Down " . Incredible vehicles
I suppose we are pretty fortunate.
Can u tell us how the process looks like to get one. Thank you
Beautiful vehicle. wish I could get one for a first car but it requires too much maintenance early on for me to afford lol
Yep. There is a lot of work required to make an auction truck safe and roadworthy.
Now you just need to armor it.
I drove one these with the 40mm grenade launcher.
If only I knew where to get pats for it. ;)
Ist time I've watched your channel so I don't really understand what you are doing other than this being number 2 so presuming it's replacing number 1. You also seem to be putting this back into military spec and I've never seen what makes up a military spec Hummer so thanks for the review and explanations that was very interesting. I was amazed that you got that engine running after seeing what came out of it's sump and knowing it had been full of water, I had no idea you could do that, in fact I'd have bet that you couldn't, guessing it's because it's a Diesel. Anyway thanks for the vid I enjoyed it. Did wonder why they had a hatchback arrangement instead of a flat roof to the back, was impressed it opened from both sides.
Hatchback is because of the blast from the TOW missile that was mounted on top.
I just subscribed to your channel and hello from New Hampshire.

I’m gonna take a wild guess and say this hmmv has seen some action.👍
Doesn’t appear to have been driven off road hardly at all.
They allways bend the propeller shafts, with forks from the lift.
The fork lifts are necessary, but evil.
The Shield piece on the geared hub, is for protecting the CTIS line fitting. I see them all the time on H1's, but humvee's with CTIS hardware is rare. Kind of odd to see that shield piece on a non-CTIS rig.
Interesting. Thanks.
,,, hauled many of these, and one set of the first light armament. The 24 volt starting is amazing. It will sit there cranking very fast, and put out these consistent, little puffs of heated, compressed, light grey, fuel and air puffs, But they are not combusted. One wiff of ether, and she lights. Or use or fix the glow plugs .
Yikes! Ether is no bueno for diesels.
,,, so your on an Army base, you already have one guy from the motor pool, that can't start it, its cranking, very fast, it's got fuel, you appear to be miles from the motor pool, you have 2 more to load, believe me a whiff of ether didn't hurt it, OR the other two .
@@rolandtamaccio3285 wd40 is a safe alternative. Ether washes lube off of cylinder walls and is too volatile for high compression engines. Ether is a great way to blow up a diesel engine.

Man this makes me want to get more Humvees.
Need to figure out how to buy them without paying that stupid out of state use and sales tax.
If you buy from the auction, then they can refund the sales tax once you pay your local sales tax. Or, some states will waive your state/local sales tax if you show proof that you already paid state/local tax on the purchase. ie. they can't double tax you on one purchase.

Can you believe I didn't have to pay extra for that?
"A dump on my dream" oh my God! Lololol man you're a killer ahahahaha
I love the Humvees! Wonder why they designed it's top end so going low as this? I think I may go for one with more high space on the back..if possible, I even would like to make it taller.
You mean the slanted area at the back of the top?
I heard it was to stay out of the way of the blast from the TOW missiles.
I think the slantbacks look cool, but I hate how much truck bed space is sacrificed by the low top. And there is no rear window AT ALL.
Sounds like you want a helmet top. They typically are 6” (i think) taller from the drivers seat back and have a rear hatch like a pickup topper.
@@Ulfstigandr There are a wide variety of top options for HMMWV. But yeah... helmet tops can be pretty cool. i want one with a turret in the top, but those are pretty rare.

What's next??
Your very own UH1 HUEY helicopter for your own air support ??
If done right , you could tow it on a trailer behind the Hummer. :)
If you have deep pockets you could find a classic Cessna A-37/T-37 Dragonfly jet trainer to cruise across the sky with.
That sounds like an awesome plan!
Let's look at this a bit more closely...
I'm a fixed wing aircraft pilot. Never been much of a rotor head. BUT for the sake of easy vertical takeoff capabilities, I guess a Heuy would work. Not sure what "air support" I might need, but I have been lifted into a Huey via a forest penetrator on a winch line. So, I've got a bit of a nostalgic tie there to help justify it.
Where you went off the rails is the A-37/T-37. Seriously? We had those at one of the tech schools I attended in the early 90s. I suppose any jet is cool, but you picked the most pedestrian option. At least step up to the T-38. Those are exponentially more badass. And let's be honest... if going the T-38 route, then an F-5 is really the way to go. Side note...I almost purchased a MIG 15 back in the mid-90s when I stumbled on a family of Russians refurbing and assembling a small batch of them in a hanger at one of the airports (Johnston County Airport in NC) I frequented when doing air search and rescue training. They were running out of cash and looking to flip one cheap to finance the build of the next few. I could have had that for $20k-$25k. Fortunately, I had the sense to walk away from that deal. I was a Crew Chief for the first few years of USAF service and knew a bit about maintaining military jets. The complexity and parts availability of that airframe would have been more than I could handle. I likely would have died in that plane. I mean... yeah. It would have been hella cool though. :)
Another bit of trivia... the very first plane I EVER flew was a T-41 Mescalero out of the old Charleston AFB, SC.
Planes are fun, but the HMMWV is a lot more practical. :)
What about replacing the heater box with a vintage air compact hvac system! Beats Sweating!
Actually, I"m thinking that THIS is going to happen as soon as I save enough pennies...

Don't want to mess with the heater box, as the heat works rather well. :)

I really wish some company would make a "no frills" type of vehicle in modern times... like what a jeep was when a jeep was a jeep. So many regulations... government has to take care of everybody but ironically usually military/government vehicles avoid all those regulations and take advantage of the no frills.
I get your desire, but even lowly HMMWVs meet almost all of the civilian Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. There are a few exceptions for mission requirements, like no air bags or reverse lights. :)
Looks like a grand to me
It is a rather grand HMMWV.
Thanks!
I've thought about looking into a purchase of a military hummer but most are sold on a bill of sale only. Can that be turned into a title and plates for road use?
Some come with only a paid invoice, some with SF-97, others with titles. There are various ways to buy a HMMWV. This will help make sense of the options: gear-report.com/what-does-a-surplus-hmmwv-cost-how-to-buy-a-humvee
Do you have a link to the video about the deep ford kit?
Its an article, not a video. gear-report.com/humvee-info-what-does-the-hmmwv-deep-water-fording-switch-do
Have you Heard of after market Lockouts for the Humvee that and 2wd/ 4wd transfer case would up the fuel mileage . Don
Lockers... gear-report.com/hummer-upgrade-auburn-gear-ected-max-limited-slip-to-lock-differential-review-and-installation-in-a-hmmwv
Not sure about 2wd/4wd transfer cases.
👌👍
Just buy it there
Um. What?
4:58 me 30 minutes after going to Taco Bell 🙂
bwahahahahaha!
Traversing unit.
Borrowed from olive-drab.com .
HMMWV turret a full 360° but it can be difficult to move the weight of the weapon, shielding, ammunition and other components, especially if the vehicle is not level. Motorized turret systems have been developed to solve this problem.
By 2006, engineers at the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) designed the Battery Powered Motorized Traversing Unit (BPMTU) which provides a HMMWV gunner with powered cupola operations.
That describes a powered turret system. We have a manual turret. 😎
Wouldnt have a powered unit in combat. Just one more thing to go wrong while murphy is hanging with you.
Dont want a tombstone that says, it came down to the wire and it failed.
Kept small wires around, to jump the no start problems. Pop the diagnosis cap by the shifter, connect the S & T labeled pin points ,activated the starter. Lol, electric problems, due to switch/wire failures.
If they made a version of the Jeep Wrangler for the civvy market just like this, that's the one I'd buy.
Meh. Wouldn't be the same. :(
But whatever makes you happy. :)
@@GearreportdotCom LOL , I wouldn't either.
That would be awesome! I could be the king of the mall parking lot!
That glass fogs up because you use chemicals on the window to clean them. Unless you are using the recommended chemicals on the windows that is specified in the manual it will fog up over time
True. However, in this case the windows are fine on the surfaces. The layers in the ballistic glass are delaminating.
@@GearreportdotCom because of the chemicals, thats what causes it to happen. I worked on them everyday for 10 years.
@@whicket1989 could be. I was told it is mostly heat that causes delamination. They sealed the edges of the laminate with tape. I didn't see anyplace that looked like any liquid got past it.
@@GearreportdotCom it's a reaction between the layers of glass that causes the "fog."
So, how does it get in there?
Where did you get your turret? And how much was it? Thanks
Turrets are like fight club...
The mount by gunnee is for thermal sight
thanks
Are the hatch backs more expensive? You can get the non hatch versions around Houston for 15k all day. Running and driving.
Yep. And you might get a 1st Gen HMMWV with a 3 speed and soft top for 15k. But not a 3rd gen with a 4 speed and hard top. You'll be lucky to find one for 30k.
Lots of these leaving the sales list at 5k-7.5k each...
Lol! I wouldnt pay more than 3k for those peices of shit!
@@fraidykat some of the older, worn out, stripped 1st gen HMMWV auctions may go that cheap. But those older trucks are are getting a lot less frequent and harder to find. Then add a few thousand in taxes, fees, transportation costs. The newer HMMWVs like this one are selling for a lot more.
@@TheSwissCheese87 They aren't for everyone.
