  • Gex: Enter the Gecko (also known as Gex 3D: Enter the Gecko or Return of the Gecko; or on N64 as Gex 64: Enter the Gecko) is a platform game released in 1998 for the PlayStation, Nintendo 64, Microsoft Windows and the Game Boy Color. In 2011, it was added to the PlayStation Network. It is the second game in the Gex series, and involves collecting three types of remotes to unlock different TVs in the hub world that lead to levels, and to aid in the fight once again against Rez. The eponymous gecko protagonist is voiced by Dana Gould in the American version, and Leslie Phillips in the British release.

Been playing this game a lot lately. I have obvious nostalgia glasses on while playing because I do have fond memories of it. It's not perfect at all, it's actually pretty bad, but something about it still draws me in today, I'm trying to 100% it and I'm pretty close. After spending a lot more time on this game as an adult, I see this game is incredibly frustrating and is a downright troll. Take for instance the Chinese level where just before getting a remote, there is a platform with a trap door, if you stand on it, you are dropped to a lower platform suspended in the air that has no escape. You are softlocked. Your only option is to jump off and kill yourself. The game rubs it in that you almost got the remote but you just had to fall for a troll. And many other instances. The bonus stages are full of trolls, and I easily spend more time in here than I do collecting the remotes. But oddly enough I am invested, it's captivated me enough that I genuinely want to beat it 100%. Will let you know how disappointed I am when I beat it :)

I loved the game for N64, but only because I could only afford to have one system at the time. Also, when I was 10 years old, I thought Gex was hilarious. As an avid N64 collector now, it was essential for this to be included in my set due to nostalgia, but it really is a shame that the port was not given more care.

Personally, I feel the PS1 version is superior because of Gex's one-liners and personality. Not to mention his voice change in G64. The gameplay is no different, thankfully, but I just feel that Gex's persona just makes the PS1 version better

As a teen, I played the N64 version first, then played the PS1 version . . .I immediately used my N64 version for target practice with my pellet gun. Damn I'm old, that was so long ago . . . .at any rate . . .I think the N64 version is the one most people remember, if I'm not mistaken. With that being the case, the memory of Gex just isn't as strong.
That's if they even remember who, or what, Gex is. Even gamers around my age have only the vaguest and blurriest of memories of this character. Some characters stick, Banjo/Kazooie, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro The Dragon (often seen in cosplays at cons) and of course Sonic and Mario . . . .others, Gex, Earthworm Jim, Vector Man, etc . . .just . . .wear out quickly :(

I loved these games growing up. I haven't replayed them although I am a big fan of 3D platformers. Scared nostalgia might bite me this time. Back then I played tons of Spyro and Gex, almost no Crash (which I honestly discovered a lot later in my life) but I'd be happy with a remake of these games. I mean, Gex was like Conker's bad fur day before that was even released.

  • @LucatheDingo88

By the 7th console generation I feel like overall interest in 3D platformers had pretty much died out among the mainstream and younger audience in favor of the next call of duty clone.I think underdog platformers that were never well known to begin with like Gex are probably going to continue to be forgotten.

  • @LAZY-RUBY

Gex hasn't shown up because his shtick is old. These days, wise-cracking one-liner fountains come a dime a dozen. Hell, even when they didn't, the "platforming animal with attitude" archetype had oversaturated the market. Without some amazing writers, I doubt Gex could even survive in this era.

I always felt like the controls on the N64 version felt horribly like non analog PSX controls, pre dual shock. After seeing the great Nightdive studio remasters of Turok and Shadowman,I would love to see them tackle the Gex series. Perhaps as a trilogy pack, with some upgrades and the original audio put back in, maybe even remix some of the world designs similar to how Turok had. I would totally buy it on Switch for my daughter as she loves playing Gex on her N64. For now, however, the best way to play the Gex series is on a PSC where you can have the whole series in one place.

This game was the very first time I had ever heard of Gex as a character, but the fact that the title of the game was made of two parts separated by a colon, it kind of suggested that there were other Gex games already out there. I was curious about it back before the N64 became a retro console, but never got my hands on it, and I'm still interested, but might reconsider the system I try to get it on.

It was one of my all time favorite games on the PS1, along with Deep Cover Gecko, even though that, yes, I know that both games are not without their flaws and yes, I do know that the camera is quite faulty in both games.
My favorite parts of the game were the first Kung Fu Theater Mao Tse Tongue level, which starts off in a street, with music that suited that level really well for me (but not in the PC and N64 versions sadly, where you get the same music from the other Kung Fu theater level (Don't remember the name, I know it's been a while).), the In Drag Net bonus level with the subway train, which I found rad, and even the Rezopolis level, that I found very dark, moody and atmospheric, especially the music, that makes me dream about flying through my hometown Dortmund at night.
That was the time that, with the releases of the PS1 version of the original Gex, as well as Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain and Pandemonium, Crystal Dynamics had been in a renassaince (even at the time when Eidos bought them out in 1998), where they've released a ton of cool and very memorable games such as this one, except for the N64 version, which sure, wasn't a great port, but I guess the people at Realtime Associates, who ported the original game to the N64, sorta tried their best to make the N64 port play closely to the PS1 version, but nah, it sorta failed.
And sure, DCG did end the Gex trilogy on a positive note, but I do have fears that since the Gex IP had been in the hands of Square Enix, who had fucked up Eidos after buying them out, a Gex reboot would be a great disaster.

A permanent memory via Gex 64: I rented this game from a local Blockbuster store when I was 8 and one of the levels I played the most was Scream TV, the level that's like a haunted mansion. One of the in-game quotes from Gex during that level are "Don't take career advice from Joe Piscopo." He said it...a lot.
One day my dad hears him say it and angrily snaps "if I hear him say that fucking Joe Pesci crap one more time I'm gonna smash that TV" such a dad moment he didn't even get the right actor, I muted the TV thinking "what's he got against joe pesci?" 😂 (plus I was 8 so I didn't even get the original joke in the first place)

Actually, Gex 2 didn't use TR's engine, it used an original codebase that was later used in many following Crystal Dynamics games, such as Akuji the Heartless, the Soul Reaver half of the Legacy of Kain series and Project Snowblind. It'd be more accurate to say that Tomb Raider (namely the games starting with Legend, when CrystalD overtook the series) used the Gex engine.

I wouldn't mind Gex having a comeback about now, there's so much new material to make fun of in today's world.. And as long as they make a good platformer/adventure game out of it, and the game itself is fun and not a joke in itself....I agree, it would have been nice if they took more care in this port and fleshed things out a more. I believe I owned Deep Cover Gecko for the N64 and not being a teenager yet at the time, I remember enjoying it for the most part! Great Review though Glenn! You are basically Mr. N64 of the CZcams! I tried playing it again last year though, and yea, I couldn't bring myself to finish it. Never actually played this game before, but it kind of looks a little like a crash bandicoot game ( not as good of course) just in that sense of a level warp room, also wasn't there a second gex released for n64 ?

I believe the reason we didn't get a Gex game for the PS2 era was because of Crystal Dynamics taking over for Tomb Raider. As for why we don't get one now? I imagine Squenix don't see much point in bringing back an old, not particularly well remembered platformer. Also, Tomb Raider, again.

I think Gex left gaming and got a cozy desk job in the insurance industry.
