Flying types are often underrated due to the early route Flying Pokémon available in most games. But.. what if we got access to the full spectrum of flying encounters in Pokémon Emerald... could they beat the game's hardest challenge?

We've done some hard Pokemon challenges in the past, but usually they were a solo Pokemon challenge run. What if we still did a really difficult challenge... but with a full team using hardcore nuzlocke rules, and with only one type? Today we find out: can I beat a Pokemon Emerald Hardcore Nuzlocke with only Flying types? No items and no overleveling!

Monotype Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
(1) If a Pokémon faints, it must be permanently boxed or released.
(2) Only the first type-specific Pokémon encountered in each Route/Area can be caught.
(3) No Legendaries/Mythicals, duplicates, or same-evolution-line Pokémon can be caught or used. If a duplicate is encountered, the next unique type-specific Pokémon encounter can be caught.
(4) Additional Pokémon may be caught for the purpose of HM use, but these may not be used in battle at any time during the run.
(5) No Items can be used in battle (Held Items are allowed).
(6) Party Pokémon levels are limited to the highest level Pokémon of the next Gym Leader or Elite 4 Member. So long as your Pokémon are at or below the level cap when the Gym Leader/Elite 4 Member battle starts, they can level up mid-battle.
(7) "Set" Battle Mode must be used at all times.
(8) No connecting with other games for the purposes of importing Pokémon, Items, etc.

I know I'm late, but just a quick little tip: In generation 3, Surf doesn't hit your ally in double battles. Only your enemies. It was changed in later gens.
I was just thinking this. I think it's pretty much just earthquake you need to watch out for in this gen (even then flying type would be immune)

Fun Theory: They switched the Machokes helping you move with Vigoroths, not because it was more hoen themed like theory channels say, but because theyre your gen 3 fathers sent to help you move since he is know for having the Slaking/Vigorath line.

Thought of an idea to throw in at the end of a run.
What if you show your predicted final team I.e who you wanted to end the run with before it began. Then you show what you actually finished it with. That way, in a run like this where you had a lot of deaths it shows how much you had to improvise. Just a thought

@Milo Silver yes, it's really annoying. Creators' top comments don't count either as far as I can tell. On some videos there's even a spoiler-block comment that people vote to the very top just for that reason. It's a whole thing. 😂 That being said, I'm never going to complain about spoilers in the comments because, well, they're for talking about the videos. So I'm just hoping the first comment is generic or has a minor spoiler.
This run was INCREDIBLE. Bluey put in some serious work there at the end! I was so sad about that Bubble loss though. Dude, this was epic! I'm so excited for the next!

25:02, 25:26 - Your Pelipper can learn Shock Wave (TM you got from the Electric gym), so you could easily annihilate the opposing Pelipper, and it's also helpful against the opposing Skarmory.

Oof. You might’ve just had it at the end if you did a third Dragon Dance after surviving the Hyper Beam at the end. Gyarados was on recharge, so you had the extra wiggle room to power up the once.

@@Rexonow Not possible. Moves that cause recharge lock you out of your menu from Gen 2 onward. This includes NPCs in situations where they’re usually liable to indeed use an item.

Honestly, I'm sort of glad you lost Gyarados and Swellow, because they make the games so easy. It was awesome seeing Skarmory, Pelipper, and Tropius take up the mantle!

This is definitely gonna be a tough challenge! This will be a good one for sure.
As a big flying type fan, that whole Wattson fight broke my heart.
Flying nuzlockes in gen 3 are doomed to lose most mons on that battle regardless, thats what makes this so interesting. Those 4 in specific, Crobat, Gyarados, Swellow and Ninjask are immensely helpful on the rest of the run, specially on that Glacia fight, the second big roadblock.

@@stokeyarcanum5754 Water, Normal and Psychic and Ground hardcore nuzlockes are way too easy, as long as you grind and know the games properly. Im talking gen 3 but most other gens are just like that. It doesnt feel as satisfying as the more chalenging (and doable) ones such as Grass, Dark, Rock, Fighting. The gen 3 Flying bunch, if you look at them as a group, It might look too strong as well, but this specific roadblock (Wattson) makes the whole thing more balanced, because it does indeed kill many of them. That said, Silph coulve saved some of them, from the top of my head, grinding for flamethrower for Gyarados before Watson coulve made things different

After you lost so many great Pokemon early on, I definitely would have called it quits and just started over. I think it's admirable that you stuck with the run anyway and got so close to winning! And losing those Pokemon might have made room for team members you wouldn't have used much otherwise, resulting in a more interesting run.
This one's definitely winnable. Honestly I think it would be cool to have you go back to the ones you've lost and give them a retry. A Gauntlet of sorts.
Flying type is wildly underrated. One of the best types for sure.
Not says a good Tuesday morning like a good breakfast, playing Pokemon Showdown, and a nuzlocke from Silph.
Catch some Safari Zone 'mons, take the items they hold, and release? Then you could get a Sharp Beak without Thief.

Dodrio, Skarmory and Pelliper are gonna be insane in this run.
I really used to undersell flying types. Swellow became one of my all time favorites after I got one early game in a nuzlocke!

Dude that run came so close, the clutch survival at 3hp made it feel like altaria could bring it home but it was just shy due to the ai getting a lucky blizzard and random order. Great run my dude

At the end, I'd bet the Gyarados would have matched your Altaria's DD's even when it could have KO'd Altaria. I've done it before when I had a DD Tyranitar at low HP against an Icy Wind Marowak, and the gen 3 Smart AI favors speed control over the KO!

The flying type allows you to be a super fast scum bag poison type, immune to ground (I'm old-school, so discount levitate)
I did a flying type mono run of emerald. It wasn't a nuzelocke but let me tell you. You gain a massive appreciation for pelipper and skarmory. They're so underrated

Losing the "would be adamant, guts swellow" was the first play you ever made that made me flinch and think that I would have done better. That was utterly unnecessary.
Wattson and Roxanne were brutal. 100% I would watch this run many times again if you re-do it with less strict rules.

36:10 what has happened? Sealeo misses Blizzard while hail is still up, it even says that right after he misses. I thought hail gives Blizzard 100% accuracy
I think i would've used the Facade TM into Dodrio, the Glacia battle would've been a lot easier because I'm pretty sure it OHKOs everything she has on her team
You def should have gone to +3 when the Gyarados had to recharge. I’m not sure it would have mattered, but who knows
And EQ in the last pokemon. Water don't resist ground so it should be super effective! Two major mistakes that maybe (i say maybe because it would be RNG) cost him the run. But we see it only as a viewer...so...
@@Konstantin-91 Whisxash isn’t weak to Ground… it’s only weak to Grass. EQ is less powerful than Return, which is less powerful than a STAB Fly. But Fly can miss so I understand the Return play. But regardless that best he can deliver is a neutral hit with Return seeing as he has no super effective moves

In this gen, surf does not hit ally pokemon. Same as how future sight hits dark types as well
3:13 You can train special attack on Ralts on route 102 before the first gym (they give 1 Special Attack EV each). Given the encounter rate for Ralts, I totally understand why you might skip that.
17:43 Draco Meteor? I honestly wonder if this is what inspired that move because of the association between the Bagon line and Meteor Falls and the how they added the Draconid clan in Gen 6.

Man, losing the Tailow early was brutal. Guts Swellow is one of the best pokemon in the game. Possibly your best option in this entire challenge?

I expected the harden absorb strat at Roxanne to preserve the team. Setting up on Geodude and pray against nosepass could have spared poor Chuck
Man always loved my Dodrio. Really underrated Pokemon and amazingly powerful with stuff like drillpeck, return or even something like STAB Fassade with silk scarf

There should be a Nuzlocke Safari Zone exception for monotype runs. You should be able to get a pokemon for each zone. Could have added natu or Xatu
The deviation i felt for not getting to see Facade, Guts, Adamant Swellow this run cannot be said well enough.

Gen 3 had some pretty powerful flying types. Skarmory and its entry hazards, Salamence and its base 135 Attack and base 100 speed, Swellow with its access to Guts boosted Facade, and everyone's favorite Baton Pass user Ninjask.
I forgot that skarmory was gen 2...
Maybe I'm over reading this but at the end when Gyarados hit Bluey with Hyper Beam, if you would have done one more Dragon Dance you might have been able to KO the Wishcash. Still it was a great run, and it was impressive coming back from Watson after losing all but 1 pokemon.
No lie the first half of your team being wiped out i thought damn theres not that much good options for him but seriously your second half team became your strongest, but yes indeed that swellow was a major lost , enjoyed the video over all
In gen 3 surf doesn’t hit allied Pokémon in double battles, so you didn’t need to worry about using fly or protect to dodge it
Factor is actually pretty good. I've been using it for about a month now because it just dropped in Canada. It's about $16.50 a meal, but they're all pretty healthy and tasty.

@@mayborneflower I made it to the elite four with Salamence, Gyarados, Xatu, Swellow, Altaria, and Tropius. Had some unfortunate crit luck against Phoebe and Drake and went in to Wallace with only two and couldn’t finish it out

Here’s a consolation fun fact to lessen the sting a bit. In all Gen 3 Hoenn games, a wild Carvanha from Route 118 could theoretically solo the whole Elite Four and Champion gauntlet with no alterations thanks to its typing being good against all comers and having a final Level Up move roster of Agility, Take Down, Swagger, and Screech. Enjoy the fun little mental picture of a speed boosted Carvanha getting lucky enough to land three Swaggers in a row against Steven’s Metagross as it does nothing but punch itself in the face four times in a row.

Yes there is, Ralts on 102 give Special Attack EVs if I remember correctly
In the champion fight, i woulda kept EQ as a tm till then and taught it to Salamence. Its moveset would be Dragon Claw, EQ, Crunch Brick Break. And then taught Fly to Altaria. As it has more power over Return(unless he gave Bluey the Silk Scarf). Then in the case of Salamance vs Tentacruel, kill with EQ and have it eat the Gyarados intimidate or sacking to whatever switched in to then go to Altaria and set up safely.
That was a good run the wattson fight was insane wingull did great clutching up
I Think Salamence shoudlve been fully trained in attack, he is able to sweep everyone of Glacias team up until walrein, then, you can switch between Pelipper and Skarmory. This is totally from the top of my head, but I think there are strategies to make more mons survive until the last battle.
Pelipper has a special place in my heart being the first full ods shiny i ever found
Imma be honest. If I'd lost my Taillow at the first gym like you did I'd have just reset. Guts Swellow is too good to lose that early.
Didnt know Pelliper was part fire, cuz Bubbles rose from the ashes like a phoenix to save the run against Wattson!!
