Apart from a few content creators that have directly colaborated with them they didn't send screwdrivers. People have genuinely bought them and decided to use them. The few people who received them specially got the regular black with a custom colored ring insert, GamersNexus, level1techs, jayztwocents and a few more i can't remember.
That full colored handle had to have been purchased.

You will want to print the parts from ABS, PLA is quite bad for static and with the fans blowing over them there is a high chance of a build up of static electricity. With the drives plugged in they should be grounded over the cable but it can arc when you unplug them.

First of all, I'll let you know that it has nothing to do with the channel, it's just a rant about the world of 3D printing.
Today, I bring a different perspective on 3D printers, based on the research I carried out.
I came to a conclusion that I would like to share.
I have a comment about the world of 3D printing, which, contrary to what some say about accessibility, is still a world for few. Despite the criticism I may receive for this, I believe that although printers have become more affordable, there is still a long way to go before they become an achievable dream for many people, including myself.
It's not just the initial cost of the printer that must be considered. An often overlooked point is the ongoing cost of the filament. Just like in the early days of inkjet printers, where the price of ink was an obstacle, today we face similar challenges with filament. Even though printers have become a little cheaper, filament remains a considerable investment.
It is notable that over the years we have not seen a significant reduction in filament prices. There appears to be a lack of real competition, resulting in companies setting prices almost like a monopoly. Filament quality is also a concern, with reports of poor quality not justifying the investment.
Another aspect that is rarely addressed is the amount of material wasted due to unsuccessful prints, especially for beginners. Even though errors decrease over time, they do not disappear completely. This is a relevant point to consider, as it contributes to additional costs and not to mention environmental issues.
That's why I say it and I repeat, cast the first stone if anyone who has never been through this, even with vast experience, still continues to print with errors and has to do it all over again, no matter the printer or your knowledge, there will be errors and as a result waste of material and input costs. what do we need and start thinking about this issue, well the filament should be cheaper, it would help the person who bought it and nature thanks you.

RAID IS NOT A BACKUP... say it louder for the people in the back. Awesome to this, especially since a friend picked one of these up a month(?) or so ago for use in their home lab. I like this, not just because practical prints, but because it's yet another case of "here's a company that sells a product and 3D printed parts are appropriate and fine". I understand injection molding and such "take something from a hobby to a product" and "it's so much more efficient and cheaper to injection mold" but that's not always true. You need to hit that proper cost/modification amount before you can get to them.
One of my favorite moments was seeing an office email saying the fancy $10k coffee maker broke... and then the repair man shows up (because those machines require maintenance contracts), opens the thing up, and inside... were a bunch of 3D printed brackets and the part that actually holds the brewing component (a metal cup grounds go in, pressed by a paddle, pressurized water injected over the grounds, etc.)... that holder was 3D printed (appeared to be PETG or ABS) and had cracked, so some grounds spilled, it wasn't pressing the grounds down, etc. The next day, he showed up with a new 3D printed part... and machine was repaired and back in business. If someone wants to complain that some company needs to "modernize" with injection molded parts, I casually gesture towards the "artisanal" coffee machines that use 3D printed parts instead of injection molding. My guess, since the machines are imported, is that by utilizing a 3D printer they can localize repairs/replacements of the machine.

    • @chomp7927
      @chomp7927 Před 4 měsíci +4

I mentioned this on Techno Tim's video about this case and how for the value it's not worth it for a home lab setup that you have to build up anyways. Way too much money for no front IO, no access to drives without unracking, no rack rails, the back plane isn't full speed for every port, if you use the designed slots for the 2.5 drives they are literally sideways infront of the fans blocking them (other cases don't do that), I could go on but this is just not a good option for $800 compared to the rest of the market for home lab use cases.
Needless to say his viewers didn't like that, hell he even posted in the thread calling me names when in his own paid advertisement, oh I mean totally unbiased YT video that just happened to come along with over 2 grand worth of free gifts, he mentioned that there was nothing else on the market like this and it was the best option out there.
At least here Joel and Crafted didn't try and lie about what it is, props for a more honest video, getting harder to find those these days when every other video someone gets thousands in free stuff and still pretends like they were not paid and there's no bias....
For real homelab use there are way more valuable options from SuperMicro, SilverStone, hell even Rosewill and used commercial servers can bring more to the table for $800 than HL can.

Should 45 drives sell used chassis'? Of course used gear is cheaper. Unifi is overpriced trash compared to used enterprise switches too. There is a target market for everything and in this case it's not you. I honestly prefer my overpriced synology NAS over my custom Truenas Supermicro Xeon build which was half the price and twice the performance. It's a good we have plenty of choices to meet our needs/wants.

2:30 45Drives and everyone should stop saying the HL15 is for an home lab, its not.
And mostly because of the price, is incredibly expensive for any home user unless you are rich.
Specially considering you can have the same exact experience with a Fractal Define R case.
Update: For the ones not aware, the empty chassis (no MB, CPU, Ram, HBAs, etc) with only the backplane (which in reality you don't need in an home scenario), costs 800 $USD.

Can you guess the color of my underwear? No? And i can't tell the color of the 3D printed parts of your server because they are hidden. Not visible to the public.

I love this but to be honiest a Synology Server would have been just the right thing you need. With so many choices they have you could have gotten one that fits your budget and had the features your looking for. Just my two cents.
