  • Never in all its history has America been so obese. With 160 million Americans severely overweight, in this documentary explore increasingly aggressive treatments as well as the counter-trend of body positivity and 'Miss Plus' beauty pageants.
Despite repeated government efforts to encourage the population to slim down, the obesity rates just keep climbing.
Faced with this staggering figure, healthcare professionals are trying to find new, more efficient and more aggressive treatments for this illness… We meet Casey, one of the few people whose weight has become a matter of life and death, and travel to Arizona to see an innovative new academy helping young girls learn healthy habits and slim down.
Despite the rising obesity crisis, a new movement is shaking up the United States: body positivity. Through lucrative social media accounts, popular magazine covers and even successful ‘Miss Plus’ beauty pageants, overweight Americans are learning to flaunt their curves and love themselves no matter their size.

Body positivity is absolutely toxic when you start glorfying obesity and don't adress psychogical issues that lead to overeating and whatnot, don't treat food addiction as the addiction it is etc.
Having what I taught for a decade to (especially) young girls about how it's ok to not be model-thin or how dangerous eating disorders because of body dysmorphia can become be perverted into "you're obese and your body is literally dying, celebrate it" honestly makes me sick, cuz just the same brainwashing I fought to prevent as a social worker but on the opposite i... ugh.

Yeah, people who get cancer can get skinny during their treatment, but sometimes they may gain weight. For example, I had a cousin who unfortunately passed away in 2017. He had cancer before he passed away. He was fighting it already for almost 3-4 years. At one point he was taking this treatment (I am not sure exactly what treatment it was), but this treatment did make him gain weight and become chubby. Before that, like at the beginning of his cancer, he was getting skinny because of cancer. This goes to prove that not everyone who gets cancer will just "lose weight". Some will actually gain weight and some might lose it. I guess it depends on how a person is being treated during their cancer treatment and what type of cancer they have.

Pharma industry gives out diabetes medication like candy after the actual candy caused all the diabetes. Diet industry profits from all that never ending fatness and has no intention to actually help people lose weight in a sustainable way. So losing weight becomes not just personal responsibility, but a war on many fronts. And then there are all the fat activists freaks, who will tell you to stay fat forever. I agree. I’m overweight and it would be selfish of me to be taking over another seat without paying for it . I would be squishing the person next to me and that is not fair for that person. I started to work out because I could no longer breathe at night. I have never been ashamed of being fat or felt ugly. Fat people are not ugly but you will have a shorter life span . At my heaviest , I neverrrr promoted to be fat. Only that accept the consequences that come with being obese . I didn’t like that I could not breathe and my sleep apnea got worse . I want to be around to take care of my parents and not have them worry about me . I would never shame anyone what decision they went to take but blaming others and saying it is “ an injustice” that some airlines are charging for another seat is not the airlines fault .

    • @leavesofdecember
      @leavesofdecember Před 2 lety +4

@@jenniferdaulby5519 I think they should! I think every retailer should have, especially online, models of all sizes portraying the same dress!! This would be a real win win situation because every body type could see how that would actually look on them and also how the same dress looks on someone a bit thinner and I think that alone would make so many people very happy AND it would also serve as an inspiration for people who wish to lose weight or gain weight. And maybe your ideal figure is just a couple of sizes up or down and you never knew because you could never see it directly as a comparison and maybe thought like most people do, that this size is million light year away from where you're at. But of course companies aren't in the business of selling clothing, they're selling "lifestyles" and they're literally selling the models! Because the ideology is that you need to manipulate people into buying your shit so you can please your investors etc etc. But in reality, much like organic foods, I'm sure people would flock like crazy to a website where they can see their body types. On the other hand I do find it dangerous, even if only a natural consequence of today's retailers, to make a whole different industry just for fat people, it's literally segregation and it feeds even more into this stupid idea that we're somehow different species of humans almost. It's disgusting, fat people are just people who have more fat, I mean it's not rocket science really... And if we could see the spectrum of weight along the same dress or clothing you'd have such a clear picture of everything and especially women I think it would change everything! Because again just seeing that oh just one size less and I can already start to see a bit of waist here and a bit of boob there and oh look 2 sizes along the way and this dress already falls better on my curves and you know small steps with the whole picture in front of your eyes is a clear path to your ideal body shape whatever that may be! Just how different this experience would be for all these women? As opposed to the usual, I can't find a single dress that fits me, but I love how this dress looks on this sized 0 ( what the fuck does that even mean America?!?) who's also Photoshopped to absurdity! And then you buy it, and you can never wear it so you throw it away, we pollute the whole world with things that don't suit us because they weren't made to suit us but to be sold and trashed so some dudes can collect their stock market. It's sooooo unnecessary... 😵😑 Instead make sustainable clothes for actual real body types because then you can actually sell them if you lose or gain weight and since they were made for actual humans, you can easily find other humans to buy them who are at that whatever weight. Oh did I mention how many more jobs this would create too? You'd have a ton of plus sized models of all sizes being needed to make these photo shoots for each line of clothing and it would be real!! Like literally you could see other models who only differ from you by some number of dress sizes. It's the same for men, I mean looking at these overly muscular dudes seems like a literal impossible task, but if you could see a line of men that progressively get more muscular it puts everything into a clear and quite achievable perspective. If that's you body type. I personally advise people to look at sports because they show a variety of very different body types which are all healthy and beautiful and if you're a rugby player you're quite different than a swimmer or a ballet dancer, because they all use different muscles for different tasks. I don't understand why everyone wants to look the same? Respectively why does the industry manipulate us into actually believing that we all want to look the same?! Because if you're being super honest with yourself and talk to other super honest people you'd soon realise that's bollocks. Every person's idea of the perfect body type is well, their very own very personal and very individual idea of an ideal. And I wish people would strive more towards their own ideals rather than whatever's "fashionable" that year, that's why I think having all sizes represented by actual models of all sizes would also inspire people to desire all kinds of body types both for themselves as well as in their other halves...

I have been (for many years) and still am obese; enjoying a fairly carefree life and enjoying chowing down food. No matter how much I exercised, the weight would just come back and I would blame it on "slow metabolism". I started out 264 lbs and I'm only 5'7.5". I have hypertension and I'm only in my early 30s. Was rushed to the ER a few times because of arrythmias. And having had COVID in the past certainly did not help. Recently, I finally became serious about prioritizing my health; mainly looking into what I eat and really making time for exercise. Now that I have loved ones and starting a family has come into the picture, I realize that I have to set myself up not only as a role model to my future children but also to keep myself healthy enough that I may see myself grow old with my partner and see my future children become adults. In the last 2 months from when I started, so far, I'm down to 230 lbs and I feel good tbh.
Sure, body positivity with regards to obesity, at first, will seem to not be a bad thing; but it will only make you feel good in the short term. Ultimately, obesity is unhealthy and imo such movements as shown in this video should not be something that should be promoted as much.

That restaurant is particularly obscene, actually foretelling the health problems its patrons are eating themselves into. Our health is precious and deserves more respect. As am I. No wonder there's such an obesity epidemic? Who wants to see their child, friend or whoever, suffer through all this? I'm sure if you were to ask an obese individual if they are truly happy with their lives, despite seemingly so, you'd find that the majority would prefer to be within a healthy weight range. Much of it starts in childhood or when there's an illness that renders the individual less able to move around and the parent often gives the child everything they want as far as food, and healthy entertainment goes etc. There are often deep-seated issues that should be delved into asap in order to deal with their issues. I'll stop there. It's very sad to know that most of these people will have serious health issues early on that are mostly preventable.

Holy cow, I was shocked by the number of severely obese people driving around on motorized carts. The size of soda bottles, portion sizes, bags and boxes - everything was just double or triple size with enough to feed multiple people. And I got the impression that junk food was much cheaper than healthy food; here in Denmark, it is the other way around with 'bad food' being more expensive. We cook most of our meals here, going out is for most, not an everyday thing. No wonder so many people are severely overweight or obese in the US.

Chicken breast is $1.99/lb at Costco. If you're eating 8 oz portions that's $1 per meal if all you're eating is chicken breast with no sides. If you eat 2 corn dogs that's $0.39/meal. Processed foods ARE cheaper. That's why part of the problem when it comes to food accessibility for the poor is that they often times can only afford food that is bad for their health. The problem is not just the lack of common sense of the kinds of people who are in this video, but the culture and food environment that they have been raised in and have accepted as normal, ever since being a little baby. When people are surrounded by other overweight and obese people everywhere they go, who also don't know much about nutrition and exercise, they start to accept it as being normal, and end up becoming as clueless as everyone else around them.

You brought up another good point that works against people wanting to lose weight which is the pressure and judgement of the people around you. If most people are overweight or obese in your town or city, and you are losing weight, they will try to bring you back down to their level because that makes them feel better about themselves and the choices they have made. And that is hard to deal with when those people are your family and friends.

@@davidduncan9201 Hungary has a huge obesity problem. The latest data I've found is from 2019 and it says we are the 4th most obese country worldwide. More than 60% of the adults is either overweight or obese. The problem lies in the mentality of people: "Nobody can take food away from me if I eat it." and "You are healthy only if you eat enough." in which enough=until you can't even move after a meal.
You are right, because overweight/obese people tend to drag down anybody on their level so they don't feel as overweight as they are. "X is overweight too, Y is even bigger than me, so I'm fine" . You can't imagine who many times I've heard this sentence - and how many times I said it when I was overweight.
Now that I'm at a healthy weight, my blood pressure is normal again, my heart rate is okay, my overall health improved a lot, and still people around me tell me I'm too skinny. Interesting, that only overweight/obese people tell me so, normal weight people are honestly happy for my success.

In the 21st century, our society is exposed to things in excess. Everything from technology, social media, food and drugs. We are prone to addiction because we just have access to way MORE than we need, so learning to consume in moderation is the challenge. But you have to first accept that you have a problem, see a nutritionist, commit to even a moderately healthy lifestyle and you will see change. And speaking from experience, stop doing internet crash diets, weight loss is a long process that requires patience and consistency.

Im amazed by how people even function at 400+ pounds. Im 31 years old and my weight topped at 240 last winter and my knees and back started to make serious trouble and i felt like crap in general. Now im down to 200 after working out and fixing diet for half a year and im feeling pretty great.

Congratulations! So proud you’re doing well! I’m similar in that I get to over 205lbs and I’m actively working to get back into shape or at very least maintaining. Maintaining usually when I’m struggling with my mental health (being autistic) and too burnt out to do anything. This usually ends up me fluctuating in weight unfortunately which I’m working on trying to find a lifestyle which works for me and doesn’t burn me out but allows me to be healthier. I’m so glad I have that want in me to get healthier I couldn’t imagine getting to 400lbs. Heaviest I’ve been was 213lbs lol because I started drinking monster energy drinks regularly . When I went on the scales I was flabbergasted but Switched to sugar free and went down to 200lbs again and now I don’t drink them at all.

Me too, I was overweight and even when climbing a stair I'd feel like I'd get a heart attack, I'm losing weight and it feels so good to run, swim, clean my house... And feel nothing but normal.
