  • There are 14 million obese teenagers in the USA, four times more than 30 years ago. But for those who can afford it, there’s a solution. Camp Pocono, two hours away from New York, is the biggest fat camp in the country. Every summer, 400 children are sent there and put through a tightly regimented routine, a strict diet and gruelling sessions of cardio. We follow some of them during their three month stay there. Will the camp meet all their expectations?

If you can pay 7000 dollars to send your kid to camp, you can afford to send your daughter to a therapist... especially if she says she has most of the symptoms of a depressive disorder.

For 7k they should have a child psychiatrist on the grounds that meets with the kids and teens to discuss the mental part of their weight gain. No one comes out the womb obese and usually it’s an event or multiple that causes these gains. If the campers were able to understand the root of this disease they could fight it better and keep it off. Not to mention a lot of them are dealing with depression and other mental struggles. And they should have counseling sessions with the parents because a lot of the parents are overweight themselves and brought that unhealthy relationship with food into their homes which their kids learned. It’s weird to me how the camp is completely ignoring that. Also they have these kids doing day to day activities and hard workouts which they’re not going to do when they leave. They literally will not have time to do all that when they have school. They’re not teaching them how to make their own meals and portion control which is so important. Most of weight loss is food, working out is more about building strength and toning your muscles it’s a part of weight loss but they really should be focusing on food. At a normal camp having meals given to you makes sense but the whole point of this camp is to help them loose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle which makes it counterproductive. A lot of this should be changed tbh

The root of the problem is food, not the lack of exercise. The camp focuses on these intense drills that none of these kids are gonna keep up when they get back, most of them have literally never worked out in their lives. They need to focus on actual nutritional education and most importantly portion control, something the kids will actually take back with them. It’s literally setting them up for failure.
The exercises should be low impact and something that they would actually continue when they leave. Making them hate working out is gonna make the issue worse. These people aren’t gonna make any impact.

In my opinion, the intense exercise is necessary to get fast result and keep them motivated. These kids are young and energetic yet do not have the discipline like an adult. They easily goes side track (demotivated) if it took too long to see result. The camp workout was conducted in group, they have funs while working out with fellows camper. I myself from obesity background in the past, tried all kind of diet paleo, keto, intermittent fasting you name it and none of if work at all as i couldn't resist the temptation of high calories foods in long run and ofcos demotivated along the line when dont see much good result. Only when i got involved with high intensity workout (2 session a day, morning and evening), somehow i was motivated to follow proper diet and keep away junk food for quite awhile until i achieved my ideal weight. The craving for junk food has disappeared after each workout, not sure how but it happened and probably is due to extreme fatique? anyhow, its served me well to control my diet that way.

“You know kids will be kids” is one of my most hated comments to trivialise when kids are bullies. Kids aren’t bullies just because it’s some sort of right of passage. It’s not ok and there is absolutely NO excuse for it. They need tougher penalties and laws against it so that kids know it’s not ok and they won’t get away with it and the bullied child knows they can have something truly done about the problem to stop it. I was a kid and never bullies others and I’ve taught my kids to be kind, accepting, compassion, loving and inclusion of all their peers and other people. I don’t understand why other parents seem incapable of doing that same, though I do understand sometimes the child learns that behaviours from others or does it to “fit in” which has nothing to do with their parents ability to parent in general, I do feel that for the most part, it has a lot to do with how they are brought up.

They would be fine if all the exercise they did was say an hour's walk a day and concentrated on diet instead. They could work out their current calorie level then taper it down until it was say at around 1500 or whatever is the relevant number for each of them to lose 1lb a week. In order for a child to be successful, they need committed parents/families. Quite frankly, it's not entirely the kids' fault parents don't encourage healthier lifestyles. It's a large and unfair responsibility to expect a child without the financial means to buy their own food if their families continue eating unhealthy foods and facilitating an inactive lifestyle.

In order to get approved for surgery, depending on how much you weigh, you have to lose a certain amount of weight on your own. I had to lose 50lbs on my own. Other people who weighed more had to lose 100lbs. This is to prove to the doctor that you are capable of following a strict diet after surgery. I successfully lost the 50lbs in the amount of time the doctor gave. I had my surgery and I now weigh 180lbs. It's an incredible feeling being able to walk up stairs, to walk long and short distances without struggling to breathe, daily activities are far easier, I no longer struggle with my self esteem and I'm not ashamed of my body. I wanted the skin surgery but my doctor said my skin just needs toning, therefore I just need to work out more. My skin doesn't hang or anything. At my biggest, my body wasn't really flabby, probably because I had always played sports most of my life. So now I'm still eating healthy. I love fish, watermelon, blueberries, squash, carrots, sweet potatoes, salads, yogurt, tuna, and those were foods that I used to hate. Lol. I just need to focus on defining my arms and stomach since I don't qualify for skin surgery because according to my bariatric doctor, I don't need it. 💪 I hope these kids can be successful. I remember being like them. I never thought I'd get to where I am. A healthy body and mind, is a healthy and happy life. I'd love to have a cheeseburger and fries, just to eat whatever I want and however much I want, but I can't. My surgery has prevented me from doing so. Besides if I ever do decide to get the lap band out of my stomach, I'd still continue to eat healthy and maintain the diet I have stuck with these past few years because I truly enjoy what I eat and how my body functions now.

Honestly 7K? In the '90's we took in 2 Fresh Air kids from NYC for a few weeks. We lived on a small farm set back from a dirt road and my 3 kids were about the same age.
The kids were outside all day during the day swimming in the pool, in the garden, playing around with the animals horses, chickens, dogs, cats. Or just playing games in the yard. Always within sight but free to actually move around in the summer air!
Even taking an old blanket out for picnic lunches. Bonfires most nights. On weekends we always found something to do. Go to a summer event, or lake.
Nothing that cost a lot of money just spending time with them. Exactly what we always did when the girls weren't there. We always seemed to have a houseful of the kids friends anyway.
Both girls lost weight, got tanned and had tons more energy by the time they went home. We had them, I think, for three summers. It was really great for all of us.
Didn't get paid a penny to host them. But loved having them visit. Kids don't need "camps" to lose weight. They need a bunch of safe active things to do. Good food at mealtimes and parents who can supervise them and enjoy their company.
We never had desserts, chips or soda around but always fruit and raw vegs anytime. Breakfast , lunch, dinner and light snack an hour or so before bed. And we ALL slept well.
Spending hours in front of their phones is so mind numbing and such a waste of time. I know most parents work, but that's no excuse to make sure their kids are supervised then and DO SOMETHING with them when they get home.
Take them shopping. Let them help pick out healthy food and then let them help cook it. Not just good for young bodies but for learning to make good choices and building solid relationships too.

I agree with some of what you are saying but it's important to recognize not everyone has a safe space to let their kids roam and get lots of activity. Not every family has the ability to enjoy weekend activities or even activities in general. You keep saying "We" well who is "We"? Not every family consists of 2 functioning adults. Even if one is functioning chances are they are taking on all the responsibilities of a household and doing most of the work alone. You can want to be there for your child both mentally and physically but if the adult isn't also receiving some type of support then how do they support them and a child. I understand there will always be deficiencies but when it's one parent doing everything it's hard. Maybe I'm reading your tone wrong but from how I read your post it is all look what I did for these kids and its not that hard but you aren't living like these kids are.

The issue i have with this is a lot of the campers started off with little to no exercise and now they have to do all these activities a day. 20 hours a week of physical activity is a lot especially when you werent doing any just days prior. You dont need to engrain in these young people that that much exercise is what is necessary to stay lean and healthy. that much activity is enough to make anyone exhausted and not want to continue. Exercise and diet plans are not one size fits all. Some there have to lose 30 lbs right next to some needing to lose over 100. Their plans and expectations should be different. This plan is far too rough

Teenagers are not going to be honest about how they feel about themselves or tell on other kids for bullying them or belittling them. And if there’s bullying going on in places like this then they are not counselling them enough. There should be no tolerance for bullying in a place for children that already have low self esteem.

True to that. I'm 30 now and my body has been M & XL for about 6 times since i was kid. Thankfully i'm not junk food eater so that's one of the reasons i can easily weighing on and off over times meaning i myself (including you maybe) have advantages on that. That being said I need to again mentioning junk food cuz trust me that's the only reason actually why them getting bigger in size on such period time. Fact that junk food must have double or triple times of calories than freshly cook meals is why i'm avoiding it.
So for this fat camp case, i don't think most participants have other choices than gave out their money to get disciplines they all needed outside their comfort zone. Obviously we can see how their parents size shows how much difficulties they have at home to be determine after all.

I think that making teenagers hate sports because of the hard drill, which they will most definitely NOT continue with after the camp, doesn't help long term at all. They have to learn about food, nutrition, but most importantly, to reward or comfort themselves without resorting to FOOD. Hardly anyone in the world becomes obese without underlying psychological problems, and without the disasterous tendency to compensate for a lack of love, success, friendships, etc with eating fast foods. Plus, almost all obese kids come from obese parents. What are the chances that a weight loss in the camp will be sustainable after camp, when they come home to parents who show the same pattern and cook the same stuff as before?

The over weight kids that did go to my high school were brutally bullied. It was terrible to watch. As an adult I wish I had the guts to say something but in HS I felt I was just trying to get through it. My parents moved to the mid-west when I was 14.
