    Generation XXL is a chance for the nation's obese children, some of them as young as six years old, to reveal what life looks like through their eyes as they begin to realise that the food they eat can affect the size of their bodies.

      If only they can switch to dark chocolate... Because it has less sugar and it's pretty satiating... and combining it with nuts can help even if it's a lil bitter. And by dark chocolate i mean 70% cacao or more.

      @venus_envy Před 3 lety +22

      @@loganwolv3393I only eat dark, I agree! I do it to avoid dairy, but it's so much richer and you can pick up notes of what the cacao was grown next to (banana, liquorice, tamarind, amazing!). One other recommendation I'd add to what you said: make sure it's chocolate that has at least 25%, although 40% to 45% is pretty common in iron content in a 50g serving. That is an indication that the chocolate hasn't been stripped of its nutrients, whereas chocolate that has been will usually sit at 10% or less of the daily recommended consumption of iron, and again that's for 50g, or half a chocolate bar.

    I was a 100 pounds at 9 years old, close to twice what I should be for my height. The pediatrician gave my parents a stern talk and my Dad got into action. They didn't even tell me I was on a diet. My Dad signed me up for basketball, volleyball and swimming classes. I didn't like volleyball but liked the other two so he simply pulled me out of volleyball. He served me the exact same food he was serving me before, but before each meal I had to have a fruit or a small salad with a glass of water. I could only eat half my plate after that and I was full. I ended up dropping all the weight and keeping it off.

Have a doughnut but just have one. Also diet is a just part of it. For my I eat moderately well but as long as I work out and exercise i maintain my weight. I think Lauren's mum passed on her unhealthy relationship with food to her daughter and then used dieting as a bonding activity with her. This looks like co-dependency to me and sets Lauren up for a lifetime of seeing food as the enemy. Sabrina's mum does not set boundaries around food and whilst saying the right things, she's delusional about ingredients and portion sizes. Food consumption and preparation fills a void in this family. Jake's mum also has issues around boundaries but here it's setting limits on his computer / TV time. He's got friends, they could play outside or take up a hobby that's more physical. All these issues around food aren't really about food but what it represents or replaces - they need a family therapist first and a nutritionist second.

      Try virtually any television show with women in it. I sometimes see a cop show set in LA (I think) at a friend's house - I don't have telly - and in almost every episode one of the women in it (including the female ME) say something about needing a dose of chocolate, a specific bar (can't remember the name) or a cake or something similar. And if you read the books the show is based on it's no different in that. The writer is female and she constantly has the females (and some of the blokes to be fair) rewarding themselves daily with a bar of chocolate which they always seems to keep in a drawer in their desk or in the glove box of their car. And this is just one example but I am confident that it would be far from alone in this.

The ridiculous amounts of salt and oil, her inability to change and tell her children "no", and just her general attitude is just insufferable. As a parent, it's your role to define a healthy lifestyle and encourage it, while she miraculously manages to do the complete opposite: fried chicken on the daily, enough salt to make seawater look appetizing, and just general nonchalance when it comes to her children and their respective non-dieting.

    Man this seriously takes me back to when I was a kid. I was the only overweight person in a family with a brother, mum and dad who were skinny; and they would tease and ridicule me mercilessly. They were always on me about my weight. I remember bring a kid who wanted to wear those white frilly dresses because I wanted to look like a princess but I could never wear one because they never had them in my size. And then there was the stigma and feeling left out - like the time when my cousin took me and my brother to a pizza buffet and I wanted soda but my cousin ordered me water.. Or even when we went visiting a friend of my mothers and my brother was served a second piece of cake - I then scoffed my piece down thinking I would also get a second slice but nope. 24 years since those incidents occurred but I've never forgotten. You have to be so careful how you treat Kids with weight issues because they never forget especially if the people doing the teasing are family.

      They did test him, and it was negative. Often, overweight children are notably taller than their healthier sized counterparts, it does happen. A lot can be understood from his mother's comments. The fact she mentions that she doesn't overfeed him junk food but not that she is portion controlling what are usually deemed "healthier" foods, like rice and potatoes. People assume because they are healthy, you can eat what you like but a plate of potatoes are high in starch and carbs and in turn calories. If she doesn't accept that, then there's an issue. Also, often people pretend to be healthy at home yet stuff their faces and say "it's a once-off". The amount of kids we have had out their parents lies in the hospital tells you everything. Low-income parents get really defensive at their less than ideal parenting because they don't want to admit they are not doing something right and will claim their child has issues rather than admit that they actually don't have much knowledge of food. He states he sits at home on the computer most evenings, the last of exercise has a huge effect on this.

    These parents desperately need a wake up call and the saddest thing about childhood obesity is that it’s never the child’s fault, unless there is a underlying medical condition. But most if not all the time there isn’t a medical condition so it falls straight onto the parent / caregivers lap.

The difference when I grew up was we did not eat snacks, we ate our meals, we had no say in what was cooked and we knew it was meal time because our stomachs would be rumbling. Sunday we had Tizer, a block of Walls ice cream and a chocolate bar each. That was it. Overweight children do not want to be.
