I always thought a "food coma" was what happened to me when I would fall asleep for too long and when I would wake up I was so weak from hunger that I would just roll over and sleep more until someone noticed I was missing and put some candy/soda in my mouth so that I could wake up enough to eat real food... Come to find out, that's it's own separate problem and other people have a completely different understanding of "food coma"

I'm diabetic and the way I found out was HHS. I was in a coma for a few days. My dad tried to wake me up but I was unresponsive. So please if anyone in your family has or is diabetic watch yourself cause you could be at risk. Stay safe.

My bio grandfather actually passed away from the diabetic coma mentioned in this video. He had alcoholism, so that's what caused the dehydration. Definitely really dangerous stuff.

Yes
It depends on the type of cell. Prokaryotic cells don't have organelles so they just respire in the cytoplasm. Then you also have anaerobic prokaryotes which ferment food to create energy. But then you have eukaryotic anaerobes like the order trichomonadida which use an organelle called a hydrogenosome to ferment sugars to get energy. It's incredibly not interesting, nor practical, but enjoy your CZcams notification I guess.
Though not useful, it is, in my experience, enriching to be able to pour over textbooks and scientific studies and not get lost.

Interesting to hear you talking about diabetic coma. I had a friend who went into a short diabetic coma on a hiking trip. High carb food paired with the strenuous activity and mild dehydration took him out for a few hours and none of us knew what was happening.

I’m a History teacher and the Emu War is one of my favorite stories to tell my students. It’s one of those random stories that you wouldn’t believe it actually happened even though it did.

So the german lab that found it stated it was too unstable (a super explosive) but the community took cant test as equaling 0 not equaling less than .2

I can finally weigh in on a Theorist video!!
Years ago I lived in England, a country that doesn't celebrate Thanksgiving, ergo I always wondered in real time, why does Thanksgiving seem to wipe everyone out at the end of the night, and could I counteract it with the one thing that makes everyone's appetite at least peak out from under the coma. Bacon!
AND IT WORKED!! Right after the meal during the partial cleaning/ drink serving phase I took a slab of bacon and threw it in the oven. By the time it came out literally everyone followed their noses, didn't even find the bacon and continued to pile on the Thanksgiving action. So much better than trying to find an out for all of those leftovers.

Being cold is effective counter to sleepiness, I never get food coma because the more I eat the colder I feel. When we still had in person lectures I would often be seen shivering with a jacket on after eating lunch lol. Since the cafeteria lunch cost the same regardless of how much you ate.

all throughout elementary school they told me that in high school everything would be turned in in cursive. then i got to high school and they told me to just print everything since elementary school was for cursive, and now that my little brother is in high school they type everything! they don’t even write, they work entirely from the computer. they type literally every assignment. *sigh*
I knew a guy at work who went into a diabetic coma. He was an older guy. He was in a coma for a very long time and they also discovered he had throat cancer while treating him for the coma. So he was out of work for a really long time. He came back for awhile but sadly passed away just a few months later.

I always thought it was because when you ate that much food your body diverted more resources to breaking it down which made you sleepy.

As a type one diabetic, I feel quite honored that you understand how much food affects us. Sometimes after eating my glucose will spike up above 200-250 (because insulin takes 15-30 minutes to take effect) and then when insulin kicks in I get so drowsy. But once my glucose levels stabilize I’m alert again. My mom calls me a zombie when it’s too high or low because of how drowsy I get.
I’ve been scouring the comments for a fellow T1D, glad to see someone who also appreciates that end bit.

I'm type 2 and It happened at work that I slept for 20 minutes straight because my bloodsugar was too low

I am an Australian and yes the Emu war did happen, but it wasn’t the whole military. It was more say two soldiers and a general who were trying to reduce the Emu population due to the havoc they were causing.

As a diabetic, I appreciate what MatPat said about diabetes and luckily ,I haven’t had a diabetic coma. I called it when Mat talked about the turkey not being the root of food comas because turkey has ZERO carbs what so ever. Happy to have a episode that includes the diabetic community. Thank you for this video:)
If you don’t mind me asking, what kinds of foods do you stay away from as a diabetic? (basically what is your diet lol)
@@6uccu6 all foods are available to diabetics but diabetics with celiac can’t eat gluten or wheat flour. I don’t mind people asking me questions because I like giving them answers.
