    I am a 65 year old guy now, and I have to admit the first time I heard this version I was driving and I had to pull over. I simply could not see for tears. For lots of reasons. The beauty, the sadness, the despair. It still makes me cry if I just sit and listen. I have known of the band for many years and even in his heaviest numbers David always stirs emotion. I've never seen your channel before, but for some reason I almost cried again when I saw your reaction. So glad it moved you.

    This song was incorporated into my husbands military funeral (Canadian military funerals are much different than US) Even those who had never heard it were brought to tears. He wasn’t religious and I struggled to tow the line to have a respectful semi formal service while honoring who HE was. In the end it was beautiful. The beauty of this version is that it sounds less like a “new” version than a progression, something that I think Paul Simon felt when he gave the seal of his approval to David Draiman. Someone said that the original “Sound of Silence” was a plea to the world, a warning, and this version is the anger that the warning was ignored, which I think says it all.

    I read a comment before that Simon & Garfunkel first put the tune out as a warning, and the Disturbed version expresses anger that the warning went unheeded. I think that's a brilliant synopsis. I grew up in the glorious age of that great 60's & 70's music, and I still find it hugely emotional...this is no exception! I'm a 71 year old bagpiper, and my son challenged me to play this on pipes. I've spent the last week listening intently and transcribing it by ear to fit the limited note range of the Great Highland Bagpipes. It's the most challenging transcription I've tried, and after 5 solid days, I've got the first 4 verses down pretty pat. I should finish the tune this weekend and start editing & tweaking for my final write. This is a fun project, and I'm looking forward to finally taking it from the practice chanter to pipes.

    This man has one of the most incredible voices. He can sing soft and warm like melted chocolate, and he can conjur up ridiculous amounts of gravel without losing ANY of the power. And he doesn't have to scream or shout to be powerful either. He puts so much power into the quiet parts. This is legitimately as good as the original, and I say that about almost zero covers. But this one is absolutely phenomenal and gets right a the emotion behind the lyrics. The anger, the despair, it hits hard.

    I scrolled through a bunch of the top comments here ( I might have missed it though) and didn't notice anyone stating that David was really sick during this performance and yet he still performed perfectly. He got very upset that the Conan tech team had put some minor correction on his voice live because David basically refuses to use correction when performing. He's that confident and proud of his skills that he doesn't need correction at all. They sound just like this live as I've seen them perform this song live too!

    8:20 is a beautiful moment. You look like you're about to pause to talk about it but the next line comes in and your reaction exactly encapsulates how I feel when I hear it. I've heard this and the studio version countless times but it never fails to move me.
    Excellent reaction and insight, thank you

    Yes overwhelmed is the perfect word to describe what is a complete masterclass performance. I’m a Disturbed fan and this song in particular gets me every time. The shivers the goosebumps the emotion it’s just breathtaking and coupled with watching your reactions and your facial expression your emotions showing through on your face was beautiful. So glad you enjoyed and appreciate this talent as much as I do.

    Every time i hear this version, it makes me emotional. The way he performs this song is nothing less than extraordinary. He has such a gift of delivery, that you have no choice but to feel the entire song... every word of it... he truly was blessed by God with this amazing gift. I always feel honored that he was willing to share his gift with all of us.

    I heard Disturbed’s version of this song for the first time when I was driving home from work. I had to pull over and just let it wash over me. And hoped the DJ would announce the artist’s name. I have always loved the original (I’m pretty sure it’s the first song I heard of S & G when it hit the radio) but this version just seems like it fulfills the song’s deepest intent. It made me cry when I heard this version. It still does

    I love when artists can break away from their traditional rough and gravel sound to a softer song and tone. This performance is nothing less then powerful and yes, commanding. Your facial reaction is what I felt also, to the point of emotional swelling. Very moving, which he nailed it. And the orchestra was a beautiful touch to the intensity of pulling on my heart strings.

      Tried to look for another point, but couldn't find (didn't read *all* comments though), so I'll add here;
      Yes, there was autotune in place on this performance. Not that David wanted it, or even liked it, but the producers were worried about his voice beforehand and decided to add it "just in case". And that is a disgrace, as while it can make someone sing "in tune", it can limit godd singers artistic choices of singing "out of tune", like in slides. David for sure doesn't need that effect to sing in tune.

    • @giuseppesavaglio8136
      @giuseppesavaglio8136 Před rokem +3

      @@Garbox80 Yeah i agree. But sometimes the show must go on with higher ups making the call when it's their show and as an artist sometimes you suck it up and move on. Regardless he is a fantastic singer.

      The autotune makes certain parts sound absolutely horrible.
      At about 4:50 "in the naked light I saw" for instance. I have no idea why people think that sounds good.

      @@giuseppesavaglio8136 I disagree, I don't think they had ANY right to alter his performance without even consulting him, especially when it's well known that he hates autotune and refuses to ever use it. It may be their show but it's HIS performance.

      @@KorAsek453 Hey man i'm on your side. If the auto tune was done without his o.k then yes, poor move. But if he signed off on it and it was broadcast on the show, as is, then it was a promo performance piece. What he does musically with his band etc., that is where he has full control.

    • @duanehalverson2028

      David had more than a head cold. He had a severe case of the
      Flu with a 102°F fever and was very uncertain if he would be
      able to perform. This is why he was sitting during this performance. He was also very weak and fatigued. The fact
      that he gave the best cover to this song ever and quite possibly
      the best cover of ANY SONG EVER says ALOT of his ability.

    Personally I'm a fan of their first couple of albums in which there's not that much lyrical singing and I never paid too much attention to this cover and then I stumble upon a video that says "pay attention to the vocals on this". Damn man. More than 15 years admiring his skill and I'm blown away by it as if I had never heard it. The transitions are *so* smooth. Damnit, Draiman!
