At the dawn of the PlayStation 3’s life, Sony promised that their first high-definition console would transform the video game industry. Its hardware would trounce whatever the competition had to offer. Its online capabilities would bring people together in revolutionary ways. And - most importantly of all - its games would astound players like nothing before.
Eight Days was one of those titles. A third-person action game from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s London Studio, Eight Days promised prospective PlayStation 3 owners a high-octane experience, one in which an unlikely duo would take on a criminal enterprise across America. Its intensive gunplay and chest-pumping set pieces seemed like a blast, and its graphics looked good - maybe a little too good.
However, before the world could judge whether the game was all Sony cracked it up to be, the company would swoop in and cancel it two years after the PlayStation 3’s launch. Like so many of the promises that were made at the console’s outset, Eight Days was pushed to the side as Sony sought to prioritize what was profitable, and what its development houses did well in the midst of the PlayStation 3’s sagging trajectory. London Studio’s ambitious shooter could have found its way into the hearts of many a gamer - but with London’s pedigree suggesting the studio would be much better suited making other types of games, it was never given the chance to do so.
This is the story of Eight Days.

The Getaway was ahead of its time. No health display, no ammo count display and no objective markers cluttering the screen; it's all visual. Although I must admit that back then I loath the whole no HUD thing but today, I'm all about less HUD or no HUD when playing certain games. Here's hoping for an Uncharted level of quality Getaway!
Added: I actually remembered that gas station tech demo and I was blown away by the awesomeness but watching it now, its quite lacklustre.
The tech demo's were smoke and mirrors - and nothing shown actually running on PS3 ever came close (of those games).
It had no hud because it wasn't real gameplay. That trailer was so obviously fake cinematics disguised as gameplay. It's even mire evident 14 years later where we now know that the ps3 never had a single title that looked remotely that good.. That's likely why we never saw the game

Why? Looking at it now dates it so much. There are tons and tons of games that do what this game does nowadays and do it far better. Play Max Payne 3.

To be fair, the 7th generation of gaming was all about multiplayer. I don't agree with Sony's decision but I get it. Hopefully this game makes a sudden comeback

High Quality content as always gvmers. Totally forgot about this game. It had awesome animation for it's time. Must be heartbreaking to stop working on this, to do Singstar titles.
It's impressive how London Studio was working that early on features that became more prominent later on. not necessarily new (cover system, an Ai partner, cinematic set pieces, etc), but putting it all together at a time when it still wasn't that common.
Here you had a mix of the destructibility of the environment and acrobatics of Stranglehold, the level traversal and cover of Uncharted 4 (it seems it was more spatially aware than the original Uncharted), the interactive, cinematic set pieces of an Uncharted 2, and the driving of a GTA V, among others. Truly impressive for the time.
While Eight Days may never see the light of day, I rarely close the door entirely on a given game. Ni-Oh is a great example and I'm glad you used it. A troubled or long development cycle is not necessarily indicative of a game that will never release, nor is it proof that the game will not be good if it does. Red Dead Redemption had an extremely troubled and rather long development cycle, yet it's considered one of the best games ever by a lot of folks.

Am i the only one who feels we need more crime thriller games? I notice a lack of them in the PS3 era. Kinda increased in PS4 but still. I hope these type of games make a massive comeback.
personally i loved the kane & lynch games. i know they get a lot of hate though.

You guys make damn good content. I remember being excited for this game, and I had all but forgotten about it.
I hoped for years that Eight Days would be a PS4 game, it showed serious potential. My dream version would have been a Mature rated Co-op third person action/shooter with set pieces and interactive sequences like in Uncharted or GTA, along with close quarters combat kills that depend on your weapon, and Bullet Time like in Max Payne! I'm sure a game like that would be a massive hit!

I remember seeing one of the trailers for this on a video titled "GTA 5 LEAKED FOOTAGE" or something like that. Me being probably about 9 or 10 at the time thought this was true; but now the actual GTA V has been released long ago I was looking for what the footage actually was, and I'm glad I found it

Eight Days was a CGI demo. it was not a real game, Phil Harrison said it was a CGI showing with overlays and many people also said that after few years. it was obvious. that lighting was not in real time. not even uncharted 3 on ps3 had those kind of graphics
Brilliant episode again and I love that you featured The Getaway and Black Monday, those games don't get nearly enough praise, shame the 3rd game was cancelled. Very cool that you had the Black Monday theme and music from InFamous in the background too.
I always loved the look of Eight Days, the way the characters moved in the World, it was like the way Drake interacts in Uncharted.

That's such a shame! I didn't know anything about this game before I watched this video, but I'm really hoping Eight Days might come to fruition someday! That hope is probably wasted, but the game does look right up my street - especially since I'm playing through all the Uncharteds right now and am really involved with that style of gameplay

I remember back around 2010 I saw a video that claimed to be gameplay footage for GTA V. I was young and desperate for any GTA V related stuff. I never saw the video again for years but then eventually found out it was gameplay from Eight Days.
I literally just watched the movie "SwordFish" for the first time last night. Those helicopter scenes are lifted directly from it.
I was so excited for this game when they first announced it. I even got a PS3 with the anticipation that it would be released. I was so pissed when it got canceled. Thank you for explaining why.

I always keep a tinly glimmer of hope that some of these game will resurface one day. Not a well remembered fact, but Ni-Oh was planned to be an early PS3 title originally. And from the looks, it was supposed to play more like Dynasty Warriors than the Souls-like it is now PS4.Looks, and plays amazingly, better than it would have as a PS3 launch title

The first concept seemed to be liked and unique, then it was transformed into a FPS fast paced arena-like shooter that probably would have become another Battle Royal game. I so waited for Getaway 3. I loved Getaway 1 so much. It break my hearth to see the trailer and then hear it was canceled and it will never be released.

I’ll always hold out hope for Eight Days and The Getaway 3. It’s a real shame they were in development at the time they were when Sony were in a state of flux and the gaming market was pushing for a casual family experience. If they were announced closer to today’s more hardcore gaming market they’d have definitely been released. Hopefully either Sony and London studios rekindle the idea because I think both definitely have potential to be classics

I used to think this game was Agent the game by rockstar ... and there were so many "GTA V" trailers with this game as well as Sleeping Dogs before GTA V came out
I especially see the future of Eight Days being grim, if for the better actually, simply because Uncharted's technology seems to surpassed that original vision, with environments featuring micro destruction, and the experience of Naughty Dog behind any future 3rd person shooters
Are you certain that Killzone 2 cutscene was pre-rendered?
I thought I remembered a level in the final game being identical in terms of tech (although not with scripted animations) with only a few minor technical changes made for artistic purposes.

That level was definitely used in game (I think the first or second chapter?) but the first reveal trailer was absolutely pre-rendered.
There was talk of that video being used as an internal tech demo of what _could_ be possible but Sony gonna Sony and so they showed it off as the real thing, without letting the dev team know what was happening beforehand..... They regularly screwed themselves on expectations and backlash by massively over promising and consistently failing to deliver.
I remember this game being advertised. it unfortunately never saw the light of day. there was a game called dead rush that looked awesome as well that never saw the light of day either
