In the pantheon of fictional universes, few are as rife with memorable characters as Star Wars. From Admiral Ackbar to Yoda, the galaxy far, far away has served as a host to all manner of unique and iconic personas throughout its history - some so much so, that they’ve managed to carry entire video games by themselves.
When the clone troopers debuted during the prequel trilogy, most assumed that they would never be given the opportunity to share the same spotlight. A genetically uniform army that served the Jedi prior to their downfall, the clones would largely function as background dressing to more important characters and conflicts in whatever fiction they made an appearance, lacking the presence or personality to carry most scenes on their own.
However, it would be a squad of clones that would go on to feature in one of the most celebrated Star Wars games of the 6th console generation: Star Wars: Republic Commando. A tactical first-person shooter set between the films’ second and third episodes, Republic Commando not only provides players with an engaging gameplay experience, but gives distinct and endearing personalities to its unusual protagonists years before the Clone Wars TV show would attempt to do the same. It demonstrated that even without most of the franchise’s main stalwarts - the Jedi, the Sith, and everyone in-between - one could still create a Star Wars experience capable of reaching fans’ hearts.
This is the history of Star Wars: Republic Commando.

Boss's voice actor is Temuera Morrison a.k.a Jango Fett in Episode II. I love this game so much, there are lots of tiny details that makes this unique.
I still play Republic Commando every now and then on my Original Xbox. Love the game to bits. "Man, this place gives me the creeps." “Ah, Scorch, nothing better than a jungle hunt. Hiding in the bush, putting a plasma bolt through a hostile's cranium... makes me feel alive." “Okay, now 07’s giving me the creeps.”

There was a sequel made. Called republic commando order 66. It was a mobile game before smart phones and is lost to time.
We could never have that unless we make it ourselves. Delta squad would be retconned into all being muslim transsexuals
The Star Wars universe is so diverse and I hate that EA is the one with the license. You could make basically any game genre into a Star Wars game. And almost all of them could be amazing.
I want to see how Ubisoft will make a rainbow six esque, star wars game(Commando) if they can take a shot at it.

Ah, so the lesson here, as with MANY other "History of" and "Rise and Fall of" videos, is that whenever assholes who only care about numbers and "broader audiences" step in and change things in games, the company slowly starts to die.
The best games are creatively driven, not driven by sales numbers.

It seems to me that Star Wars Republic Commando was a relative success, DESPITE the efforts of Lucasarts Senior Management, than because of it.
If anything the development team deserves considerable acclaim due to their developing a well-executed, polished, highly-regarded game as they succeeded against barriers put up by senior management.
Well, it seems that the only member of Lucasarts Senior Management who actually did something good for the dev team and the game was Lucas himself, with his recommendation that each Clone be unique in his own way.

Republic Commando deserves a remake but not from EA.
EA would never give us something that deserves the name Republic Commando, not at least without microtransactions and 100 DLCs of questionable quality and over price
A small game development studio called blackout studios wanted to make a remaster. However some months or weeks ago all their info was gone. No CZcams, no Twitter, ...
Maybe they shut it down to prevent themselves from EA or exactly this happened: EA/Disney took juristic action to take them down. :/

Yeah, and I hope they include the PC style multiplayer. The mechanics and feel were so much fun, the double tap to dodge bullets and duel others was sweet.

The fact that no Star Wars game like this has been made in so long, only makes me appreciate the unique games that used to be made that much more. The *2* Star Wars games we've gotten since the Disney purchase have both been disappointing and I doubt any future EA Star Wars game will live up to the golden age of Star Wars games.
You're right. Back in the day we had so many varieties of SW games, from flight sims to RTS, FPS, MMO, RPG, ect, pretty much every genre under the sun was covered... Nowdays all we have is the mindless battlefront shooter, (which is okay if that's all you want.. ) or a grindy p2w mmo. Or simple mobile games... So...the sw gaming landscape is like a barren wasteland compared to its hayday. It's pretty sad really.
I'm gonna say it; LucasArts for the most part didn't make quality games which is why they made a large quantity of games. My top 3 favorite star wars games from LucasArts days were RC, BF2, and Lego Complete Saga. Mind you, those are my 3 favorite STAR WARS games from old days. RC was my second favorite game OVERALL. The rest don't even make the list. EA Battlefront 2 started out as a hot mess but after they fixed it it has become my favorite game of all time. Fallen Order also looks pretty good. So EA just needs one more half decent game to make the claim of putting out more quality content than Lucas Arts ever did.

Even for people that like RPGs, KotOR is an extremely difficult game to get into these days. It’s way too dated in terms of both functionality and design for most new audiences to enjoy it.
Jedi Knight is. But this is up there. I loved lightsabers as a kid and Jedi Knight was basically my dream game I always wanted.
@@spookylemon4947 I kind of get this, because we live in a world now where games sadly have to be pick up and play or else people wont want to play it, but I think the game still holds up for the most part, especially story wise. I just think the combat needs a little tweaking.
Republic commando still the one of the greatest sw games of all time and one helluva hype train to ride to the opening of episode 3 .
It's also worth mentioning that Republic Commando became a launching point and inspiration for the evolution of Mandalorian culture in the Star Wars Universe. The novel series would dive more into this subject and other game titles, such as SWKOTOR II: The Sith Lords and SWTOR, would expand upon the topic. SW Clone Wars (2008 - present) and SW Rebels would also dive into the subject, and the upcoming series The Mandalorian, directed by Jon Favreau, will continue the journey.
Star Wars games are gone & done the moment Disney put exclusive right to EA.

There was a remaster in the works by a mod team called Blackout Studios... but yeah, EA issued a "cease and desist" a couple months ago and that was the end of it. It looked incredible (using the Unreal Engine 4), but apparently remastering a 14 year old game is highly detrimental to the Star Wars franchise and EA's failing financials.

Funny how the Clones actually bought me into the Saga. I'm pretty thankful to my friend that introduced me into Ep II.
From that I got into this universe like crazy. I remember that not that long after getting into the movie, I meet Republic Commando. Such a wonderful childhood thanks to that.

Closest we have to a sequel in terms of gameplay is Halo 5, which has its own host of problems. Good thing is that Republic Commando is easily found on Steam for dirt cheap and still holds up pretty well.
No. Closest thing we have to a sequel in terms of gameplay is Mass Effect 1-3. Halo 5's team mechanics are not even close to it. At least Halo Reach didn't pretend and just gave you 4-5 invincible bricks to hide behind.

Disney did it so they could keep an eye on their continuity and ensure they have supreme rule over all lore. They're too lazy to work with multiple developers to make content that works together like Lucas did.

robin ross Be honest, it's was getting spastic and inconsistent before Disney, I've never truly been a hard fan of Star Wars yet loved the occasional game, cartoon, or comic. Star Wars constantly shifts from great(knights of the old republic)to terrible products(Christmas special). Personally didn't like the new movies, but Rouge One is a healthy exception.

robin ross Rouge One proves they have the talent, but they insist on trying to reach as wide a demographic as possible resulting in new stories having no real culture or presence of its own, you can feel where the writers were forced to make constant changes and force things sloppily into the story in hopes to sell toys. My friend was part of the sound team of 7 and claimed that characters were actually removed or added to fill marketability quotas constantly and that work would be trashed if they were convinced this wouldn't "promote nostalgia"

I remember playing this on my xbox when I was a kid and was blew away by the graphics at the time and the story is what got me into star wars I wish there was a new game to continue the story

My only regret for this video is that I can only like it once. Republic Commando is one of my favorites. I love RC so much that my 2nd 501st outfit is a RC.

I'm honestly kinda glad there won't be a "Imperial Commando", they would just make them end up on the light side again. Disney and EA would rape this game like they raped the Battlefront saga.
Most normal people in Star Wars don’t go to the “light” or “dark” side, they just choose what they think is right.
And if those were all logical choices for how the characters were set up that's alright. But the change in Battlefront felt artificial as fuck. And I bet they would do the same thing with this game. @@bensarchett8416

EA battlefront 2 is a good game. Has been for a while. The story's not the greatest but honestly you don't play a battlefront title, or an EA title for that matter, for the story so I'll call it good.

This game blew me away. It may be my favorite of all time, overall, due to the love put into it and it’s tremendously fun and varied and subtle gameplay loop.
Republic Commando is one of the best games I ever played; I hope someday it will have a remaster or sequel, Delta Squad has a awesome story that continues in the books.

So I don't know the first thing about the business side of games, but I've wondered for a while now why Disney gave EA such a massive contract, I really wish they would've gone game by game with multiple studios, ya dice would seem like a good choice to make battle front, (or they did when Disney first bought Star Wars) but could you imagine a sequel to Republic Commando made by the same people behind Rainbow six siege. I know you don't wanna over expand, but they could've hired the best studios out there for many genres like RPGs, mmo said, fps, etc. but unlike with the Lucas arts of old all these games wouldn't have to be handled by one studio. Idk, maybe there's some reason this would be bad, I'm just a fan of Star Wars that sees a lot of potential wasted.

Shout out to Karen Traviss for writing the greatest Star Wars series on the republic commandos
Karen Traviss also wrote in the death of Mara Jade Skywalker into one of her books at the last second, and REFUSED to change it before publishing, resulting in both multiple scrapped books featuring her character AND her ejection from the Lucasfilm novel writing staff.
Don't get me wrong the Clone Wars show is great. But Republic Commando is the depiction it should have taken instead of taking a great concept and the bloodiest war since the Sith Wars of old and turning it into a bastardized kids show. Uugghh and those droid voices... why not use these.
Republic Commando actually managed to make the droids intimidating. Especially the super battle droids. Yikes.

I feel like we watched two different shows, sure the first two seasons aren’t very good, but it gets pretty damn dark and gritty in the later seasons, especially with the invasion of Umbara.

I played it again on my Xbox One and Man the Soundtrack is a blast ,so good.

The only game I had that my friends didn’t. Such an amazing Star Wars game! True childhood memories. Remember buying he magazine to get the demo disc! Issue 43? Think I still have it! Lol
If it would have been on PlayStation less underrated the game would have become & most likely the sequel we would have experienced before Thanos was planned to snap his fingers ( disney 💩 )
