From its launch in 2006, this is the story about how the Sony Playstation 3, dubbed the first "unhackable" console with the first 4 years of its lifecycle, was completely defeated by the start of 2011 and what homebrew developers were capable of doing on the system.

You should never call your products "unhackable" because that's like going straight up to a hacker and asking to hack it.
and that's bad cause? I'm still waiting for my SuperSlim to be CFW-able since the fat one kicked the bucket with a YLOD.
I'd be fine swinging an axe at it.

That's not quite how it worked.
So, on every disk there's some code which needs to be signed.
You read the code, take the secret code from the safe at Sony and do the signing maths.
Then you write the sign to the disk.
You can verify the code using the keys in the PS3.
However, you're not supposed to use the same private key every time, there's actually two keys, one is supposed to be in a safe, one is random.
They didn't randomise the other secret key.
So, because you have the signature for, say, a thousand games and because they were all signed by the same key, you can now reduce the number of guesses of what the key in the safe is.
And because it's always the same number!?
Suddenly the number of possibilities guess from a number that's larger than the number of particles in the universe to something you can brute force crack with a few computers.
If they had just changed the number every time, every signed game would have pointed to a different secret number and you would never have guessed it.
I had someone literally yelling at me telling me you couldn't hack a ps3, as I chatted back from a hacked ps3.
@Kleiner Helfer Its strictly informational. You hack honestly, you hack successfully. Let them know, "I hacked it." And then write a book.
@Kleiner Helfer I don't know hacking, but I respect it.

The Titanic was never called "unsinkable" until the media frenzy after it sank. Proof that sensationalist journalism is a constant in society.

FailOverflow's presentation basically revealed the *only* reason the PS3 was "unhackable" was because the OtherOS feature made attempting to hack the system uninteresting. The moment they took that away, they put a giant red target on their backs, with every console modding team in the world wanting a piece of the action.
That, and they earned the ire of several of their own users for outright lying to us.
2008: "We will not remove OtherOS via a software update."
2009: *removes OtherOS via a software update."
After that, you basically can't trust another word out of Sony representatives' mouths.
It was really crazy for me when they did it because they sold the ps3 on the promise of allowing non-proprietary operating systems on the console specifically Linux and then just suddenly pretended like it never happened
I think Microsoft has done a very clever thing allowing dev mode on the Xbox one. Evidently there is a very large community that loves to see what else a console can do and this is an excellent way to allow this without having to work around security. The reverse if this happened here with the ps3. They took this ability away and the community was highly motivated to take action.
Dev mode is locked down now, RIP

@@grproteus if you say so champ, so was the steam box a massive success?
87.4 million PS3 sold, seems like a massive success to me.
How many steam boxes sold? Only ask as you obviously have the knowledge and I have no clue.
@@hanslanda7319 Comparing PS3 with a failed product (that is not a console per se) does not mean PS3 is a good product. Compare PS3 with Steam PCs instead. Or, if you care to USE YOUR BRAIN for a while, consider the argument here: PS3 destroyed the gamedev market, companies shut down because of it. This is why PS3 was an abysmal product.
If you want to compare sales, compare it to its peers. It was outsold be both the Xbox 360 and the Wii. It had the worst game catalog on the market, and it came after the hugely successful PS2. So yeah, it was an abysmal product because it destroyed developers and it was also a failed product because it didn't sell as good as XBox 360 and the Wii. That covers it imho.
@@grproteus Yes, Thankfully Sony learned their lesson with the PS4.
OtherOS wasn't a Linux distro, it was a feature that, as the name suggests, allowed other operating systems to be installed, the most common one being Yellow Dog Linux. The "hacking" going on under Linux wasn't for piracy, but to allow alternative Linux to access the GPU properly as Sony had promised them this, but failed to deliver.
In reality Sony promised more to the OtherOS community than they were prepared to actually deliver and when Geohot decided to get involved and lend a helping hand Sony simply shit themselves because of his reputation. The shady "Oh and we're removing OtherOS so any space you've got allocated to it will become lost until you format the HDD" at the end of the patch notes for 3.21 wasn't even the worst Sony did. They basically got the police to run a drug raid on his house, including a SWAT team that broke down the door as he was sleeping. He woke up to being yelled at with guns pointed at him and after that had to watch as Sony lawyers confiscated all of his devices and hard drives. At the same time they also sued him in civil court and eventually forced him to sign an agreement where he agreed to never again try to reverse engineer Sony products. They flat out told him they're going ruin him trough spurious civil lawsuits if he didn't sign that agreement.
This is what spurred people so heavily to break open the PS3 so heavily and then the PS4 after that.
In part, Sony were at first trying to promise on their claim, that it could be used as PC because they failed on their original promise of claiming that the PS2 could be used exactly like one. Edit: What I mean is, that Sony claimed that the PS2 IS a computer, however the markets outside Japan rejected to recognise it as one as there are differing critera to what consitutes a computer in Japan vs rest of the world, so they made the option of actually installing an OS system available on the PS3 at first to try and deliver their claim based on the rejection of the PS2.
So heavily
Yep, between that, the rootkits, the Lik-Sang fiasco, and their general greed, I haven't bought a Sony product in 12 years.
@@CrazyInWeston ps2 had linux also
karma is a bitch i guess
As far as I remember, the true downfall of PS3 "unhackability" began immediately after the releasing Playstation Slim without OtherOS. Before that, most of the hackers were concentrating on how to access GPU from OtherOS. So, it was a good diversion on their side; they just didn't understand it in time.
And thus, Linux was to never appear on a home console again, ever.
console developers saw first hand what happens when you break the promise of linux, so now they are being honest and not making promises they would not keep.
I tried install red ribborn on old laptop or virtualbox but is inpossible.
15 years later, it did again.
Um..Switch...?!?

I'd argue that by removing linuxos they pissed off a bunch of very smart, determined, people who were happy up until that point to poke around.
My ps3 still has otheros, is jailbroken, has an upgraded hdd loaded with 'backups' but I don't think I've turned it on since I did that, I just did it out of spite.

The PS2 emulator on the Slim is actually fairly good too. I haven't any issues with the isos I've thrown at it.
Wrong. Compatibility is pretty mixed for PS2. It's about 50% or less. Just the latest wiki.
@blondbassist
assuming you're talking about cecha01, the only REAL backwards compatible model, at around 98%, it's very very easy to just have it die.
you're going to want to buy a 19 blade fan, replace the thermal paste under the cpu lid, meaning you need to delid, replace both areas of thermal paste,
even then, if you want longevity you're probably going to have to gut a ceche01 for its superior fan and heatsink, as it isn't concave.
then webman should be configured to bring the fans speed up whenever it reaches 80 Celsius just saying, those things need maintanance.
@qatar bashtar
you're wrong, its 98% on a cecha01 when you use the ps2 system files from psn, as they fix the issue with final fantasy 12.
it's about 70-80% playable on a ceche01 but it's hit and miss, most have issues with interlacing, graphics, and lag, but it's still completely playable.
also wrong about the slims, its probably around 60-70% now thanks to managunz and a few other tweaking programs, it is probably going to be hovering up there next to the ceche01 if development on it continues, making that model irrelevant soon.
if only it were possible to direct boot a ps2 disc with rebug, impossible, but we can always dream.
Mine isn't backwards compatible and I play 1, 2 & 3. The emulation is pretty good. All PS1 games and most PS1 games run flawlessly and more run with .CONFIG files.
@@VentusvsVantias it's definitely more than 50%

Wow, thanks for the insights!
I’ve been binging this channel hard.
Great. So GB, GBA, DS, and 3DS games on my 3DS, PS1, 2, and 3 games on PS3, and NES, N64, GC, and Wii games on the Wii.
The future is great
Literally my retro setup rn
Incredible :-)))) Last night I updated the CFW and WebMan on my PS3. Also for the first time I played PSP games on my PS3. Also I have made youtube work on my modded PS3 that is banned from PSN. Just yesterday I have done this, I swear. It was just the perfect time to go to CZcams on my CFW PS3 to see your video just posted on the CFW on PS3 :-)))) You are just great.
PS: It is wonderfull that I can now software emulate the PS1, PS2 and PSP games on my PS3 :-) full backwards compatibility. Not perfect, but it's there.
To bad Sony fucked it up with the PS4 backwards compatibility.
Cheers from Romania my friend.
Vlad
Hehe, I love the ps3 too. I have mine updated as well on CFW. It’s impressive, just how much the community made for it.
That being said as an owner of many consoles I also have a PS4 PRO and i can agree that backwards compatibility is sadly badly supported on PS4. But those that work, will work beautifully. Example: GTA SA
It’s not Sony’s first time they mess up something. Just take a look at PS Vita, that is the best example where Sony decided to drop support for something that has a great potential. But Sony being Sony, it’s all about money.
Vlad Ratcu I have loads of legit ps2 and back ups, can the PS3 read or dump directly from those?
How do you update? Is it automatic?
It does run psp games but without Audio whichs sucks any fix?
I may just buy a 2 3 4 TB for my ps3 my 320 500gb not enough i got last of us mgs4 mgs v demons souls gow 3 , uncharted collection , Ac 2 3 4 , mirror edge , naruto collection , Deux human , mgs rising revengece which im currectly playing , finshed mgs4 last of us this month and many others for me which doesnt work on ps3 cfq i play it in my xb rgh and im collection ps3 games
I may get another JB ps3 for 70$
Just found your channel with that Reverse Engineering of Diablo. Found gold!
PS3 was extremely hackable
The blue light of death is actually a wireless hack
I hate when companies go full r3tard on DRM and anti-piracy measures. It just ends up hurting the genuine user (unable/ hard to install once original disc get scratches, key get lost, moving to another machine, unskippable anti-piracy ads and so on) while pirates get an easy install, no activation, no ads, no unskippable "you wouldn't download a car" clips etc....
This is very true.
Mic_Glow they just made my OG PS4 useless... unless I spend $100 to fix the blue ray drive because I guess I need a fully functional PS4 to update my OG ps4... what a joke.
Then blame the pirates. This is the same retarded mindset that people get when they blame gun manufacturers and not the people that shoot other people for deaths.
thing is: Piracy will never end, and no matter what your game WILL get pirated. So much effort and inconvenience only slightly delays the process
@@tylerh629 securom did that
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Optical Device Emulator addons that came out for the PS3. I personally very rarely play console games, but I always find the mod scene very interesting so I usually buy a console specifically to mod it and mess around with that kind of stuff on it. I got one of the ODEs for the PS3 and thought it was a clever little idea and I'm not really sure how such a thing can be guarded against. If the system sends out a request to read from a disc, but a little FPGA receives that, reads something from a hard drive, and then returns that as if it came from a disc... what can you do? You can still make sure the data coming back is properly signed and encrypted, sure, but that still won't protect from exact duplicates being able to be illegitimately loaded. Digital security is a fascinating problem space.
God its hard to believe that it has been 14yrs since the ps3 was released, where did the time go?
About three years ago I realized my family collectively had about 3 dead ps3s. I took the oldest one and repaired it using the other ps3's parts knowing it had a firmware prior to 2009 on it. It was so easy to get multiman running. I also did the psp cfw back when I was 10 years old using the pandora battery method
My ps3 is from 2008 or 2009 and I've used it very little in my teens, because I never had many games, but boy I got multiman running there and I'm getting trophies faster than the games I'm having to download
What a time to see this video! I just managed to bag a backwards compatible 1st gen fat for $80!! It was in good condition, opened it up, cleaned out the dust and put new thermal paste. Like new again :D
LORD CAPSLOCK d
Needless to say, you can hack any Phat PS3 (and some earlier Slims) in OFW 4.82. No need to be prior OFW 3.55!
Actually, almost all PS3 slims that came out in the USA can be modded. I sell them on Ebay and never have issues finding systems. The only one that can't be modded is 3001A
Dirceu Franzner I have a fat PS3. If you were to guide me on this? What will be the first step, and what is it that I'm exactly trying to accomplish with a fat PS3?
Before it gets YLOD
Huge untapped potential to me brings out images of the last of us and mgs4. Insane feats on that hardware.
I love your videos :)
The only time i enjoyed the ps3 to the fullest when playing killzone 2 multiplayer! Boy that was some era! Unfortunately guerrilla took the server down... 😒
Yeah Killzone 2 had such a good community. kz3 felt like a CoD game.
have you ever played The last of us.

They lost millions to prevent something that would hardly effect their money
Time’s given, and people find a way to do it anyways
And before someone and replies and says “video game piracy”
You can’t go online with pirated games
Money would’ve be made regardless
Them being greedy made them lose money in the lawsuit and the future jailbreak
So congrats Sony, you played yourself.

Yep disappointed, but I’m not waiting anymore I guess.
Ps3 hacking scene is pretty active right now. With the new HEN exploit you can run homebrew on your ps3 super slim.
FreshCabbage i stopped following the hacking scene after awhile, I had no idea that you can homebrew the super slim now. Is it just homebrew or is CFW possible on super slim as well?
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR 6 YEARS TO READ THIS SOMEWHERE. I was just about to comment "sucks for those of us that got a Super Slim for their birthday".
I ran multiman on my ps3 slim
Yeah. Before that, there were youtubers (mostly arabic) out there and they clickbaited people by claiming they can mod their super slim PS3
CFW is the best , hen sucks

Every possible gaming shop in south america in the 2000's: "lol no"
I’m loving the Nero track in the beginning
I remember seeing people using the original G1 Android phone to hack the PS3.
Also done with a calculator, and even a PSP!
I got my check for the suit early in 2018. $65 was the maximum. Most users like me got less than $10. Wasn't even worth the time to cash it.
That's more than you deserve loser
Great video
Oh I remember the first multiman, it was an AWESOME piece of code.
Hours and hours of playing and experimenting with MM... great time.
I still use Final Burn which I downloaded 10 years ago on my window XP PC to play AVP arcade.
Can Multiman pay your taxes as well?
If you game on the PS3 you can save your money and pay taxes
@@Matanumi i mean you're not wrong 😂

I still play my PS3 and love it to this day!
The one thing I find issue with is the claim that most PS1s you find in the wild have a modchip in them. I spend a lot of time and money in retro game stores and I've never come across a modded PS1 that I didn't mod myself.
Learn from Microsoft, don't leave test points and JTAG points on the board after debugging pre-production. That's basically how both the original Xbox (LPC debug header) and the 360 (JTAG test points) got cracked so easily and quickly. Also, if you're going to argue that they're left there for programming during production, remember that they most definitely could program the chips beforehand. It may cost a little more, but it removes obvious security holes.
Now even the Switch falls using a similar exploit.
@@StriderVM that's hilarious
not having the points on the boards doesn't stop it, it just makes it more difficult - the pins still exist.
@@freman 98% of the devices i have dissected contained a variation of the JTAG header and some even had the silkscreen on it.
It's amazing how we are already emulating this hardware but they can't figure out an Xbox emulator.
Uwot
CXBX Reloaded
It's just getting of the ground from what I can tell.
Just buy a Xbox one. It emulates the Xbox and Xbox 360
Not much demand for an Xbox emulator, no one is really working on one. I'm pretty sure this channel has talked about it since the 360 has a built in original Xbox emulator and that's running on 2005 hardware
how much pc power u need to emulate ps3.. just asking
Dead?!?!? COD LOBBIES ARE STILL ACTIVE, call of duty 4 Modern Warfare, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black ops 1, 2 and 3, including call of duty ghost and advance warfare, is crazy how those games are still extremely active. I haven't tried Cod World At War.
The word "dead" is extremely inaccurate.
