    I was wondering if the X500i did have the .65" chip, but that was part of the press releases, so I will have to try to store that away and ensure I remember it. Good to hear how well the X500i holds up in this shootout. The 2150ST for years was a solid model, and the X500i is LONG overdue as a short throw gaming model from them. Great to hear it does so well.

    Thank you for these reviews, it is serious dedication of time, and effort on your part!!!
    I decided 4k is great, but because of the distance, and my living room setup that I cannot switch to a higher end setup, because I cannot tell the difference!
    Especially with plain off white walls to just stick with 1080p for the budget price and quality of the PJ40.
    But, I have seen your earlier videos about flex seal paint ect… but would love to see an updated review of screen paint, because I have seen many new screen paints on the market!!!
    I am interested in purchasing this paint primarily for daytime use. It seems from other reviews to really make a daytime difference.
    (Side note: I was lead to use a short throw projector versus Ultra Short throw because of my fireplace blocking location of projector placement.)
    Btw, Speakers have not been important to me, because I use a 7.2 Channel surround, but I would love to see a review video for ease of use for Bluetooth setups because I am interested in the cordless functionality.
    I would like to see this because The Bluetooth marketing is very confusing! Bluetooth 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 ect…..
    Also, I would like to compare how easy the setup process would be for the Bluetooth setup would be for some of your favorite projectors.
    Ontop of this I found the marketing for WiFi especially in the budget projector market to make some big big claims, WiFi 6 ect….I know there also WiFi speaker setups so this is also very confusing.
    Looking forward to see how you might review this the future!

    After watching some of your videos, I am thinking of buying x2-4k or mars pro.
    I also want to play games on the projector. So I have a question: the mars pro has a game mode, but is the delay actually so bad that it interferes with play?
    Also, the x2-4k seems great with less latency, but is it inferior in terms of image beauty?
    I am not sure whether to prioritize the delay or the image. Which would you recommend?

    Fantastic video as always. I would be curious as to what you think about the X500i vs the Nomvadic P1000 and Benq 4550i. I personally found the 4550is raised blacks to be a little distracting and it had a rainbow look when playing games in 1080p 120hz. Not 4k though. Im more curious just about your take from an overall picture quality stand point though and contrast between the three. Sorry as I know you have tons of comments and questions.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 29 dny +4

      X500i is definitely the best of those three in my opinion. When I tested the HT4550i I didn't find the dynamic eco mode particularly usable because it made abrupt and noticeable laser power changes, but I guess it's possible they've updated that with firmware. The X500i was much better in that regard and the dynamic black mode was very good. P1000 is probably the worst of the 3.

      @@TheHookUp Thank you. I also had the same experience with Eco mode on the 4550i. I spent so much time switching back and forth with it and normal. You sold me on this one. I'll use the link again as always to show support.

      Im using one and its working great for me. One important thing for me is it was basically the only 4K Laser Gaming projector with eARC at its price point. I looked at the X2-4K and it really seemed like it performed better and has a lot of nicer options like a nice remote and built in wifi and internal power supply, but I needed eARC and the X2-4K does not have it. And I really needed standard throw not short throw.

    • @HoneyTwee

      @@jason3fc I'm in kind of the same boat with needing standard throw and not short throw.
      0.95 to 1.05 really.
      But that's good to hear that it works great. I've heard so much about it being very faulty at the moment. Having faulty HDR implementation that is stuck on. That kind of thing. Seen people in forms say they have had it replaced twice already. So kinda put me off. But at least some people are having a good experience.
      I don't really know what eARC is or why that's so important though?

    • @HoneyTwee
      @HoneyTwee Před 29 dny

      @@jason3fc One question I have is the brightness varies so much depending on what mode you use.
      2734lm in bright mode
      1784lm in movie mode
      1988lm in game mode
      But can you still do 1440p 120Hz in the bright mode? Or would you even want to? are the colours terrible? is input lag noticeably worse?

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 29 dny +1

      I don't have much bad to say about the LX700-4K other than the fact that the dynamic black mode is unwatchable so the 5000:1 contrast ratios that some reviewers are reporting is not usable. Overall the color accuracy wasn't as bad as some people are complaining about and I didn't have any issues with HDR, though I'd still recommend turning off HDR at the source since SDR will look better on a single laser projector.

    • @jason3fc
      @jason3fc Před 29 dny +1

      @@HoneyTwee I havent had any issues with HDR going off and on, it seems to work fine, though most non-gaming sources I am using is Apple TV. eARC is so I can route sound back out directly to my Soundbar/Sonos system which requires HDMI input. Do you have any plans to test projectors for golf simulators?

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 29 dny +4

      I don't think there's enough interest to warrant that, but here are the cliffs notes:
      1) Short throw is preferable for not casting shadows onto your impact screen.
      2) Contrast and black floor do not matter since you'll be using them in a room with high ambient light (so you can see the golf ball).
      3) Brightness and color do matter.
      4) 1080p and WUXGA are good budget options, the 4K resolution upgrade is marginal since impact screens generally have heavy texture that will prevent the 4K clarity.
      5) Most people will end up with DLP projectors, but if you want to use a rear mounted swing camera you should opt for a 3LCD option (usually from Epson or Panasonic) instead because your swing camera will show all the rainbows from the DLP.
      I've used a bunch of projectors in my sim. I currently have a BENQ LK936ST that I bought for two main reasons:
      1) It's designed to be extra dust proof and temperature tolerant, which is important since my sim is in my garage.
      2) I use a nearly 1:1 aspect ratio, so with a 1080p projector (BENQ 671ST) I was losing a significant amount of resolution to the strange aspect ratio.

    This review was fantastic, your breakdown of the technology and the fact you put the camera on the rail and slid it to show the rainbow effect was absolteIy brilliant.
    I know this is probably super niche but I am in the process of looking for a good projector specifically for 3D. I've watched about 8 of your videos so far.
    My budget is around $1000 but I am ok with a used unit. Currently I'm leaning towards the XGIMI Horizon Pro but I know that it has contrast issues based on your other fantastic reviews.
    Also I don't need the 4k, and although I like the increase lifespan of laser and led backlights, they aren't strictly a requirement.
    I doubt anyone else really cares about 3D, but seeing as the only current official offers that support 3D are projectors, and searching for "best 3d projector" gives one AI generated garbage videos/websites. Perhaps you might get some results with a short 2-3 minute video. I very much appreciated your addition of information about which projectors support 3d on the spec intro for each projector, it was helpful :)

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 19 dny

      XGIMI Horizon Ultra is the best 3D experience I've ever had. I am not super sensitive to RBE, but I see lots of "flicker" in some 3D projectors. Horizon Ultra had no flicker and was an overall excellent experience. Black levels leave something to be desired, but 3D tends to darken things significantly anyways. I know you said your budget was around $1000, but if you've got a little stretch I don't think you'd regret it if 3D is a big selling point for you. Otherwise I'd wait because there are a bunch of new lifestyle projectors coming out this year so we'll probably see some good price cuts on existing models.

    • @petersvideofile
      @petersvideofile Před 19 dny

      @@TheHookUp Wow!!! Thanks so much for your reply! I will review your videos concerning the XGIMI Horizon Ultra vs the XGIMI Horizon Pro. Perhaps there is sufficient difference to justify the cost. I can get the XGIMI Horizon Pro relatively cheap used where I am $700. Also I was looking most recently at the OPTIMA GT3500HDR which is the new laser variant of the OPTIMA GT5600 UST projector. The GT3500HDRseems to be on sale for $1275 on Amazon sometimes according to some posts online, meanwhile the GT5600 can be bought for $600 on ebay. I don't need 4k so the 1080p projectors seem to make a degree of sense.
      EDIT: One other thing you could add in addition to if a projector supports 3d on the spec page is perhaps at what refresh rate it natively supports it, 120 / 144 are the most common these days it seems. You can measure this pretty easily with a photo diode (or probably some of the other gear you have).

      @user-wz3xt3li6b Před 10 dny +1

      @TheHookUp let's assume it's still gain 1.0 on a dark Grey screen wall. Do you think the x500i would still show details in dark film areas or will it just become all black while the whites become egg tones because of the missing brightness then? Maybe the brighter models like the viewsonics will have more accurate results then, compared to the reference files you played? I am planning on getting a beamer for the European soccer championship but of course I will opt for a Grey screen wall in my home lounge so I can watch with friends without turning all lights completely out and still enjoy Grey and dark levels... so my question is not just theoretical but straight forward for a real use case in a social proper environment at home. Thanks for considering, HookUp Man 🙂👌

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 10 dny +1

      I still don't know what you are talking about unfortunately. Are you saying you have a gray 1.0 gain screen? That's basically impossible and most gray paints will have a gain of 0.8 or less. Why do you keep saying "screen wall" instead of "screen" or "wall"?
      If you want a projector that can be viewed with the lights on you should opt for a UST with a proper ALR screen.

    • @user-wz3xt3li6b
      @user-wz3xt3li6b Před 10 dny

      @TheHookUp oh so there is no 1.0 gain screen, they are 0.8 or less? Thanks for the clarification. I misunderstand your last question about Grey or black screens still are available with 1.0 gain. My question was originally without any gain factor. I don't know about gain factors in the results so I can't consider for now. But I know that a gray or black screen will need more light power in the projector to make a proper white so I am a little worried that the x500i power will be enough to illuminate a Grey screen in a social friendly room. There is a Grey screen about 120 inch available at Amazon here in Germany for 230€. No details about gain or whatever. Just it's very instead of white and therefore the contrast will of course be different from the white screen while the black levels might disappear to be all just plain black/ dark Grey with a weak brightness beamer on that screen. May I ask you why you are using a white screen in the first place? Does that have some advantage that I don't know yet? Thanks for answering, HookUp Man 🙂

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 10 dny +1

      White screens are the standard for projectors. When you start using different colors it is impossible to judge color accuracy. When talking about gray screens you can measure their white gain, but they will have slightly different gains for each color resulting in very poor color accuracy.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 27 dny +2

      That is not backed up by the data from this video. The LX700-4k had relatively poor black levels in full power mode (0.101nits) and has an unusable dynamic black mode due to noticeable "steps" in laser dimming. The X2-4K's black levels were much better even with dynamic black mode off (0.067nits) and had a very usable dynamic black mode with a black floor of 0.034nits.
      The RBE was no different on the BENQ vs the Viewsonic models in this video, and I would say overall the focus on the BENQ units was better than the Viewsonics.

      Dynamic black is not a picture mode, it's under lamp options. You get "constant power", "dynamic black" and "eco", and those are all selectable for each picture mode. The tests in this video were done in Cinema. LX700-4k has better native blacks than the ht4550i (and X3100i) for sure, but not better than the X500i. HT4550i blows the LX700-4K out of the water in terms of color accuracy though.

    Hey would you recommend these style of projectors for a Golf Sim setup?

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 23 dny +1

      Eh, not really. Golf sim projectors need a different subset of requirements, here are the golf sim projector cliffs notes:
      1) Short throw is preferable for not casting shadows onto your impact screen.
      2) Contrast and black floor do not matter since you'll be using them in a room with high ambient light (so you can see the golf ball).
      3) Brightness and color do matter.
      4) 1080p and WUXGA are good budget options, the 4K resolution upgrade is marginal since impact screens generally have heavy texture that will diminish the 4K clarity.
      5) Most people will end up with DLP projectors, but if you want to use a rear mounted swing camera you should opt for a 3LCD option (usually from Epson or Panasonic) instead because your swing camera will show all the rainbows from the DLP.
      6) Input lag has no effect in a golf sim. Launch monitors have lag times between 500-2000ms, so adding a fraction of a second more from the projector makes no difference.
      I've used a bunch of projectors in my sim, but have currently settled on the BENQ LK936ST that I bought for two main reasons:
      1) It's designed to be extra dust proof and temperature tolerant, which is important since my sim is in my garage.
      2) I use a nearly 1:1 aspect ratio, so with a 1080p projector (BENQ 671ST) I was losing a significant amount of resolution to the strange aspect ratio.

    I'd like to see you test the BenQ HT2060. On paper it should be even better value than the X500i.
    -It has better colors than the X500i (98% vs 95% rec709)
    -better native contrast (2000:1)
    -still supports 1080p@120hz for gaming with 8ms lag which should satisfy most console gamers
    -accepts 4k/HDR signals (important because a lot of streaming services lock Dolby Atmos to 4k streams)
    All for under $1k.
    You lose the 4k shift but that's one of the negatives on the x500i anyway.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 29 dny +1

      2060 doesn't really support 1080p120, it downscales to 60hz. That means you can get the benefit of lower input lag, but motion blur will be just as bad as 60hz and you may notice increased stutter from the dropped frames. I can't think of a reason why it would have better color space coverage or contrast since it uses the same light source and DMD. Where do you see the 2000:1 native contrast?

  • @overnightdelivery

    1000/FPS is not the minimum possible lag, if you measure just before new frames are painted you get it lower. So in fact you will get average value of 1000/FPS/2 minimum lag because of chances to shot in a random time between frames.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 29 dny

      That does not track with my experience with DLP projectors.

    • @ighor
      @ighor Před 29 dny

      @@TheHookUp your experience with DLP projectors might differ because the lag involves not only the frame rate but also the response time of the projector and the specific technologies used in handling the input signal and processing the image. And that value could always be higher than half of frame time, I mean that the actual device lag is a bit higher than your calculations suggest.

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 29 dny

      There always needs to be one frame loaded into the frame buffer, that's why a single frame is the minimum input lag. If you are talking about some other type of display device then there are a lot more possibilities and the input lag could even be 0ms if you were measuring from the first scanline of a CRT for instance.

    • @ighor
      @ighor Před 29 dny

      @@TheHookUp I'm referring to an error in calculating lag on any device, not just projectors. Your calculations based on the full frame interval (1000/FPS) might not account for the average lag, which is actually closer to 1000/FPS/2, since inputs can occur at any point during the interval.

    At 60 fps, the "minimum" input lag is not 16.7 ms! The lag ranges from [0 ms + projector ms, 16.7 ms + projector ms].
    In other words, only looking at refresh rate, the most a frame needs to wait to be drawn is 16.7 ms, and the least is 0 ms. For instance, assume the game has an updated frame for your input in the frame buffer within a few cycles of your input. The projector comes by and reads that frame buffer every 16.7 ms. If it happens to read exactly after the new frame is available, it will have 0 ms inherent lag. Obviously, the average age of your input when the frame buffer is read is exactly halfway between, and this will clearly dominate, so you should instead say the "average" is 8.3 ms (minimum).
    Contrast this with a CRT where all pixels can literally be picked up right off the buffer by the beam gun at 0 ms. With CRT, the average (for any updates to show up) is still not quite 0 ms because it generally reads and writes several pixels in each row at once, so there is still a miniscule fraction of inter-line lag, but it's a couple orders of magnitude less in most cases. (that doesn't mean the whole frame will have updated -- just that there will be *some* update around 0 ms. Whole-frame update time is still bound by the same refresh-rate constraint, so the average for the full frame to update will be similar at 8.3 ms).

    • @TheHookUp
      @TheHookUp  Před 4 dny

      That is not correct. For a DLP projector measured with the Leo Bodnar lag tester the minimum is 16.7ms for all the reasons stated in this video. Different display types will be measured differently.
