    I will never understand how Laika manages to make their stop motion so frickin good it's unbelievable, it's so full of life and energy....I feel like so many digital animated movies etc can't get this right and it makes Laika's stop motion so much more amazing

      Stop action has its own unique charm that CGI and the like just can't replicate. So much work goes into these movies, and you know for a fact that the people who made them were passionate about them because they are so labor intensive and time consuming.

      I’m not sure how this film was made but I believe in the past Laika does most of the film using traditional stop motion and then smooths things out in combination with digital effects and animation.

      @@beccawaltz7591Yes, all of the main characters are filmed irl with stop motion, and some of the background characters or scenery is cgi, but only when it isn’t a major part of a scene. They have modernized the craft but still stay true to the past

      @@sexygirlmax2019 Yeah, I agree. Kubo is hands down their most gorgeous film, but the story is AWFUL. It bogs us down with all this backstory, but all it did was make me wish I was seeing THAT story instead of the boring, nonsensical one we got.
      They never explain why Kubo can control paper yet nothing else, why his mom is suddenly losing her memory, how she can put her soul in the monkey and now she's fine only with a drastic personality change, or why taking Kubo's eyes will somehow make him immortal. They don't even explain where the moon people came from or why they want Kubo so bad, other than argle blargle flargle plot.

    The jokes were hilarious I loved the characters and overall this movie was great but it needs more love and attention

    Something that says a lot about this movie and Laika in general is the fact that my mom was willing to watch it. She has a bit of a bias towards animation and is hesitant at best to watch any variation of animation. She went and watched this without any convincing on my part and loved it! She even wants to show it at a work party for her coworkers (which are mostly college students) and I told her she definitely should go for it because people would love it!

  • @Wild_Card69
    @Wild_Card69 Před rokem +34

    Seeing the repertoire of Laika's animated filmography makes me low-key wish for another Roald Dahl adaptation from this particular studio. Maybe Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or an animated Matilda. Their first film was adapted from a children's horror novel, they could work on something like that if they wanted to and maybe build upon the source material.

    • @robertbrookes2000
      @robertbrookes2000 Před rokem +7

      In principle I like the idea, but we've had so many Dahl adaptations by now, and sadly I feel they'd lose a bit of luster because of it.
      Matilda the Musical's just come out.
      Wonka's on its way.
      The newer version of The BFG was okay, not great. And The Witches was worse.
      Maybe if Laika did a short film of a shorter Dahl story like The Twits, as a TV Christmas special for 2024, that might be good.
      Whilst not stop motion, I highly advise watching the animated version of Revolting Rhymes, which was a British tv Christmas special in 2016. You can see it in Amazon Prime.

  • @robertbrookes2000
    @robertbrookes2000 Před rokem +89

    Ayy we have exactly the same ranking list.
    I love Laika's original work, but I do like to think about what other stories they could adapt.
    I think there's a few properties that have had not so good adaptations recently that Laika could do much better with:
    Mortal Engines: The industrial steam punk aesthetic would look a treat for Laika.
    Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children: Laika's shown their best stories are focused on children who are unique or outcasts and this series has that just right.
    I think also I'd love to see Laika's take on a Whodunnit murder mystery. I can imagine say an Agatha Christie story working well in stop motion: lovely old manors, dramatic lighting, colourful suspects etc.

    • @KJC39
      @KJC39 Před rokem +5

      I would adore seeing their take on all of these- especially Miss Peregrine’s and some Agatha Christie- maybe a Poirot story like mysterious affair at styles or cat among the pigeons- now the latter would suit Laika very well I think.

    Thank you so much for this review!
    I absolutely love this movie, it's actually a comfort movie of mine.
    It makes me really sad that it's not nearly as talked about as the other Laika movies but I understand how this one feels like the black sheep of the bunch. (Also why does no one talk about how it literally won a golden globe beating Disney)
    I'd have to rewatch all Laika's movies to really pin down a tier list but this one really sticks out to be because of the characters. I immediately fell in love with the characters and how they all contrast one another, mainly Susan and Lionel. My favorite thing in stories is the character development and I really loved how the characters had changed by the end of the film.
    If anyone is looking to watch it because of this video it's available on Netflix!

    Missing Link is my favourite Lakia movie, I went to see it with my mother in a very small cinema and that close experience with the light bouncing off the walls and how laughter echoed around the room was magical. Plus I love Susan. I love the way they were genuine with Susan’s name too, you don’t get a lot of that. I think it was a wednesday. It’s a wendsday movie, a little quiet and understated but comforting, funny, and gorgeous.
    There’s also an element of subversion within Missing Link around its genre. Those kinds of classic adventure movies often start with a perfect protagonist, a man who fights the larger than life bad guy, saves his bumbling sidekick who uncritically adores him and gets the nondescript girl in the end. It’s subversive in a quiet way, and that’s enjoyable for me.
    Next is probably Paranorman, incredible plot, visuals and such, and I’m a sucker for zombie movies, and it leans into the supernatural element, more than most modern zombie movies, which helps it stand out amongst that sci-fi crowd.
    Then Kubo and The Two Strings! I watched it in a caravan during a storm, the wind and sleet lashed against the windows and everything but the warmth of that movie was just incredible. I didn’t predict the twist so that was pretty fun!
    The Boxtrolls is delightful and I love cheese. I am delighted at the visage of a large cheese wheel.
    I’m sorry Neil Gaiman. I love Coraline but it is at the bottom of the list, all of these movies rank very very highly to me but Coraline isn’t quite my thing, despite my love of body horror and intense fear of eyes. A lot of it just didn’t hit for me because I couldn’t see myself ever trusting a distorted version of anyone I know, even if they were cooler. I like my friends to be mid, I’d just leave immediately.

    Laika does it again. The Missing Link was so fun to watch & I enjoyed your commentary.
    Something about the main villain that I find interesting is how despite claiming to be the most civilized & evolved, he doesn't think before he acts, reacts with violence before all else, and is too simple-minded to consider anyone else's opinions. Although he didn't feel like a unique or revered villain, it makes sense thematically that he wasn't meant to be complex.
    And I agree that Adelina's ending was far better than I expected. It's nice that she gets to discover for herself what she wants out of life. It's what anyone deserves. It'd be a disservice to her character if there was a forced romance with a man who, despite his character development, was rude to her the majority of the movie.
    Edit:
    If I were to consider the Corpse Bride a Laika film (it was a combined creation w/ Tim Burton Productions), then my list of favorites would be:
    1. Coraline (obviously. with each re-watch, i find something new to appreciate. i wish i could watch it for the first time again.)
    2. Corpse Bride (not perfect, but very special to me. i love the gothic romance genre & it has beautiful music. and helena bonham carter & johnny depp.)
    3. Kubo & The Two Strings (blew me away w/ its visuals, twists, message, & creativity)
    4. ParaNorman (i love witches & ghosts & curses, and i could relate to Norman as a kid)
    5. Missing Link (as you've already covered in your video, it's genuinely funny, has wonderful characters, an important message, & great choreography)
    6. Boxtrolls (charming & unique & i love cheese)

    2. Kubo (just the leaf ship alone deserves an Oscar and the story is so touching)
    3. Coraline (when I first watched it I somehow didn't appreciate it, didn't fully grasp it, maybe I wasn't in the right mindset or something, so I tried it years later and I found it fantastic)
    4. Missing Link (it's such a fun movie, it deserves more)
    5. Boxtrolls (it's an adorable story with such a goofy entertaining dumb villain, but it felt to me that something was missing, but still a solid fun movie)

    I found it rather refreshing that the bad guy didn't want to kill Frost and Susan to claim the discovery and glory for himself. He just wanted to cover the whole thing up to maintain the status quo. I actually found him a tad more interesting for that

  • @viddork

    It absolutely makes sense to have _Missing Link_ at the bottom of your list of Laika films for one very simple reason: it's barely a Laika film at all! Any time I think about this movie (and, admittedly, that's not very often), I have trouble remembering it's not from Aardman. It looks like an Aardman film, it feels like an Aardman film, and I swear, the good folks at Laika said to themselves, "We make these fantastic, artistically beautiful masterpieces that somehow never seem to really grab to public's attention. Let's try making something more popular, like Aardman does." In this, they succeeded completely, yet somehow it got even less love from the public. Laika is criminally underrated as far as I'm concerned, and it saddens me that it's been so long since they put out a new film.

    (typin this up before the vid starts lol) thank god i was hopin youd watch missing link bc THEY were the laika movie that lost the most money ($75 million!!!!!) but i think its a chill movie n was really looking forward for it to come out bc i love zach galifinakis. i also jus adore how expressive the puppets are. i picked up on it the first time i saw the movie but apparently missing link has the most facial expressions for the puppets made for their movies

    Calling Loch Ness a Lake gives me the heebie jeebies as someone from that area however I also accept that it is a huge ass lake to people outside of Scotland. I also appreciate the mention of my home town/surrounding areas in media from outside the UK because you ask a lot of folk from England about Inverness you get met with "Where?" until you mention big ol' Nessie 😂
