    Fun fact, a comet’s “tail” isn’t due to the comet’s motion so it won’t necessarily be trailing behind the comet. The tail is due to the radiation from the sun. So the tail will always be “trailing” away from the sun, even if the comet is moving in a different direction! For instance, a comet’s “tail” could be trailing in front of it if it is moving away from the sun 🤗

      Isn't a comet mostly covered in ice-like substances? Like solid nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, etc? So the Sun's radiation is essentially slowly melting the comet, and assuming it's made completely of those solid "gases," eventually comets like Halley's Comet will stop showing up due to being melted away into space by the Sun's heat and radiation blowing it off into space

    • @Tustin2121
      @Tustin2121 Před rokem +7

      That tail coming off the comet also sticks around in the comet’s orbit after being stripped from the comet. When the earth runs into these leftover tail debris, that’s when we have meteor showers. Meteor showers are usually named after the constellation that it looks like they’re coming from, which is basically just the direction from which the debris is impacting the earth.

    • @arkohnlock4409
      @arkohnlock4409 Před rokem +18

      @@cjlite0210 Yes it is, and no the sun's radiation doesn't melt those ices, it sublimizes them, meaning they turn from ice to gaz without being a liquid first, mainly due to the lack of pressure
      Those formed gazes are then blasted away from the sun along with some dust by the same radiations, thus making the direction of the 2 tails (the gaz one and the dust one) dependant almost exclusively of the sun's potition relative to the comet. Almost because it can be seen that the dust tail also depends a bit of the movement of the comet itself
      Just look at the Wiki article "comet tail" it has a lot of diagrams and all that really help visualize and understand

    The Mythbusters actually did a talking to plants experiment like that one. They had plants growing in separate greenhouses over several weeks, one greenhouse had positive comments, one had negative. One had classical music, one had death metal music, and one had silence.
    The plants growing in silence fared the worst while the plants listening to death metal were by far the biggest. There was actually very little difference between the plants with the positive or negative comments.
    I found that episode fascinating.

    • @MaskedReviews
      @MaskedReviews Před rokem +48

      The experiment was flawed. What they maybe proved was that the plants that people breathed on grew better than the ones left alone. They showed one of them sticking their head in to scream with the rock music and didn't seem to evenly visit the plants. The co2 in our breath is what plants need according to every valid version of this experiment. Edit to add: They also didn't give the tents equal light or temperature. When the plants died due to lack of water, they also measured the results incorrectly. As a whole, it was a disaster and shouldn't be quoted as proof of anything.

      Exactly the same problem I dealt with all. the. time. when attending self checkout machines. The bagging area is a scale. That's how it knows you put something down and it has an expected weight range programmed in for each item that wasn't weighed to give you a price in the first place. If you're pulling up on the handles of the bag in the bagging area and the machine is constantly giving an "unexpected item in bagging area" error, it's because you relieved some of the weight of something you added to the bagging area and now when you stop relieving the weight in the bag it thinks it's too heavy. Similarly, the unexpected item in bagging area is the purse/wallet/umbrella/small child you just put there.

    Fun fact: The light you see above you when under water is something called Snell's Window. Snell's window (also called Snell's circle or optical man-hole) is a phenomenon by which an underwater viewer sees everything above the surface through a cone of light of width of about 96 degrees. This phenomenon is caused by refraction of light entering water, and is governed by Snell's Law. The mummified Dino fossil is known as "Borialopelta" (maybe not spelt correctly) that was found in a quarry in north west USA/south west Canada. It was so well preserved that stomach contents were able to be examined to determine its last meal, helping show the biome where it came from. It is theorised that it was swept out to sea by a strong storm and drowned. Then the bacteria caused bloating in the organ cavity and flipped the nodosaur over and then, when the guy burst, it sank to the bottom of the ocean. The force of this kicked up large amounts of sediment and caused concretion around it due to the ocean pressure. This helped preserve the Dino so well.

    Even then it didn’t catch on for a while, which is mind-boggling. But as far as I know it’s a really important episode in the history of medicine: the discovery of how washing hands saves lives
    Edit: disclaimer: this is what I remember from my forensic medicine class, about 5 years ago. So I might be mistaken about certain details. But the big things are right (especially the thing about being after autopsies. That’s pretty wild, that they didn’t clean up even after handling dead people)

      Same thing happened with anesthetics. The dentist who discovered it showed others, but in that case a funny thing happened. He started using it, and it would work, but when he went to demonstrate, the patient was an alcoholic, and alcohol happened to be something that counteracted the effect of what he used, so right when he was demonstrating it, it didn’t work, so the other doctors didn’t believe him. So anesthesia also took some time to catch on

      This is also why the Jews were sometimes blamed for the Black Death. Hand washing is a pretty important ritual in Judaism, so Jews weren't dying nearly as often as non-Jews. This made many people think that they were behind the plague, and helped support some of the evil Jew stereotypes that were around back then (and mostly still today).

      Yes, that was Ignaz Semmelweis and this happened in 1847 in Vienna, Austria. Part of the problem was that Louis Pasteur's germ theory of disease was not yet accepted, which only happened towards the end of the 19th century, and the fact that doctors saw themselves as gentlemen and said "A gentleman's hands are always clean".

After her first surgery we lived in a condo and I was also injured so I really struggled to carry her up and down the stairs. She will actually walk with a muzzle on compared to a cone. It was very helpful to use a muzzle to keep her from chewing at her stitches when I needed to move her and take her out without a suit on. This was also avowed by my vet. Sometimes a muzzle is used in place of a cone (as long as you don't leave them unattended where they can choke themselves.)
