My cholesterol levels were the lowest level of concern when I was prescribed Atorvastatin; I reduced my fat intake which, after living most of my life in logging camps where rigorous outdoor work in the cold requires high caloric intake daily-and a lot of fatty foods-it was a big change for me. Subsequently I had a stent emplacement in a secondary coronary vessel and the doctor performing it said my other blood vessels were entirely clear and unobstructed-“to last you the rest of your life” (I was about 60 years old at the time).
But I began to have severe muscle pain problems after about half a year of taking 40mg of Atorvastatin daily. I decided to cut the dose in half and inform my doctor-at which time I asked him why I was taking statins when I’d changed a very fatty diet and my coronary vessels were seen to be clear of cholesterol build-up. I asked to have my cholesterol levels checked again and they were well below the level of concern. But my doctor insisted I continue taking it at a half-dose-I have a heart with co-mordancy due to COPD/emphysema.
Unfortunately the dose reduction didn’t eliminate muscle pain-in fact, it continued to get worse. So the doctor (the cardiologist) switched me to 20mg of Simvastatin. That helped somewhat, but the muscle pain kept getting worse (just at a slower rate). It became intolerable (and I take opioids for spinal injuries-have for 20 years-but it didn’t cover the muscle pain at all and I don’t want to increase it anyway).
The solution, finally, has been to take what my GP calls a “statin holiday” (a play on words from “stat” or “statuary holiday”): an eight to twelve week period of no statin-until the pain has gone away completely for a few weeks; then I resume the 20mg Simvastatin until the pain gets intolerable again-which seems about three or four months.
I suppose it’s better than not taking it at all, but if there was no other recourse, I’m afraid I would elect not to take it at all. The pain is not worth the supposed benefit-especially as my cholesterol levels are low now.

Geoffrey, thank you for sharing your experience for other viewers. It is difficult for both prescriber and patient alike, as the prescriber wants to follow best practices and guidelines and you have to deal with the side effects.Drug holidays are a possible solution. Not sure if you tried Co-enzyme Q10 to mitigate the the side effects of the Statin.Ultimately, its is a shared decision with you and your Doctor weighing in the benefits vs risks with your unique medical history.

Think Your Health : thnx for getting back. Yes, it’s important to do any of this in conjunction with one’s doctor(s), as I have done. They’re always relieved whenever I tell them that I’m back “on” statin again after a short ‘holiday’ and haven’t simply abandoned it-which, I suspect, a lot of people do (it’s as easy as google to find that there’s an extraordinary amount of controversy about stains, and that might serve as a rationalization to quit taking it altogether because of side effects).
My doctors have all recommended Co-enzyme 100 and of course I take it daily. If it helps (perhaps a little obscure to me, what with other condition), I’m all for it: Co-enzyme doesn’t come with a long list of side effects.)
      Thnx again.

As a chronic case manager- I found this very helpful. Some patients aren’t aware that their complaints may actually be side effects from their current medications. It’s very important especially when multiple pharmacies and/or multiple doctors are involved that we consider the possibility of a drug/drug interaction as well. I know of at least two cases where such a thing has occurred with my patients- but I caught before the mail order pharmacy was able to fill the order.

Was on 80mg a day after bypass surgery. Could not remember things, was confused, knew something was wrong but thought it was a side effect of the coronary bypass surgery. Went to my doc for a respiratory illness, she decided that 80mg was too much, my lipids were very good and went down to 40mg a day. Several weeks later I realized that my memory was improved and I wasn't fogged out all the time. I started cutting the 40mg in half and next visit my lipids were still good. I told the doc and she prescribed 20's. I immediately started cutting those in half. When the next couple of labs showed my chloresterol was still good, I told the doc about cutting the 20's in half and my memory had greatly improved and wasn't nearly as befuddled as before and I'm just on 10mgs a day now.

As a runner who puts in over 2,000 miles every year for the past decade and lift weights 3 times a week, I was getting bad muscle pains in my legs and whole body after workouts and running. I didn’t know the side effects as being muscle pains until after so many running injuries in my leg muscles. I thought because I turned over 51 years old , it was Father Time coming after me. Then after watching CZcams videos by Dr Berg, I realize it was the Atrovastatin. My marathon was not easy and my legs cramped up about 10km earlier than it normally would for distance I run.

No no no. There are ZERO benefits to taking a Statin drug. If lowering your cholesterol is your aim than try Red Rice Yeast instead. No risk of dementia or Alzheimer’s which is what will happen if you take it for about 5 years. There is a 1 to 1 relationship between Statin drugs and the development of Alzheimer’s as it robs your brain of the fats it needs each day to heal itself. You as a man also face the dangers of it eating your joints away thus requiring joint replacement.

Good presentation. I was an active, crazy active cyclist when I was prescribed stati (I think Simvistatin), I let the fear of 'muscle pains' (most likely from 300mi/week of riding) get to me so I stopped. I listened to a podcast recently that suggested that they studied real pains to suggested pains and surmised that most people overreacted or thought the pains were a side effect. A few years later and cholesterol started creeping up again so now I'm on Atorvastatin, no sides, but won't know benefits until tested. It hasn't helped ED as I hoped (first time it did).

Another thing I'd like to add is statins also cause cataracts. I went to the opthalmologist two weeks ago and discovered I have cataracts in both eyes but they are too small for surgery. Cataracts have to be a certain size before insurance will pay for the surgery. I attribute these cataracts to the taking of atorvastatin. Hopefully getting off the poison my cataracts won't grow any bigger. I'm infuriated because I never wanted pills and only took them because my doctor insisted. These pills destroyed my quality of life. People of the world need to stand up and sue the drug companies and the doctors who push these poisonous pills.

If you hava muscle pain following statin use, you should get a check done for CPK level. Statins tend to raise teh CPK level and a higher CPk level can cause your muscles to degrade or sort of like dissolve in layman's terms. Sometimes the CPK level can also be due to below normal Vit D. Any time you have a muscle pain have the CPK level checked not very many physicians do it but i learned about it from mine. Some tiimes a differrent cholestrol lowering drug will not affect the CPK. Remembe that a higher elevated level of CPK canaffect the Hear muscle too. Just what i learned from my experience with cholestrom med use.Feel free to share your experience

I was prescribed Atorvastatin in July of this year. My cholesterol wasn't particularly high so I don't know what my doctor was trying to accomplish. After taking medicine for about 8 weeks a blood test revealed my blood sugar had risen 40 points to about 160. Shortly afterwards I developed joint pain in my hips (at the time I was walking about 5 miles daily or cycling 25 miles for excercise). After taking my normal walk one day I began to cough uncontrollably. I could feel my sinuses draining into my lungs. Joint pain also increased significantly. At the beginning of November I began to suspect the Atorvastatin was the cause. I stopped using the drug and contacted my doctor. Because of Covid my doctor was only doing virtual appointments so I was unable to have him actually examine me. The cough worsened and a chest X-ray revealed bronchitis which was treated with mild antibiotics. I felt somewhat better however joint pain was increasing to the point where I had trouble getting out of bed and moving around. Eventually the cough came back, worsened, and I was diagnosed with pneumonia . I'm recovering from the pneumonia and have an appointment to see a rheumatologist to see if thr joint pain is permanent or can be reversed. Atorvastatin quite literally ruined my health. I cannot walk the distances I used to and I struggle with the urge to cough constantly. Perhaps not life threatening side effects, but centainly life changing side effects.

"After taking medicine for about 8 weeks a blood test revealed my blood sugar had risen"
Same here. This is what they never tell you. I was placed on Atorvastatin with a barely above average cholesterol reading. I was already on Lisinopril for my blood pressure (which was also under control and doing fine) but I was also placed on a second blood pressure medication (Amlodipine) at the same time as Atorvastatin. My blood sugar skyrocketed after being put on these unnecessary meds. Health care "professionals" NEVER explain how these drugs can cause your blood glucose to spike... sending you into pre-diabetes or full blown Type 2 diabetes where you otherwise would have no reason to. I stopped taking both of those meds and my blood sugars have been slowly but steadily heading back to normal.

I do get my words mixed up and feel tired alot. I'm 54. My cholesterol readings were good last check up. I have type 2 diabetes and have had a stent fitted 5 years ago. I have had a heart attack and had a pacemaker fitted 2 years ago. I have been using my sleep apnoea machine for 20 years. I love life and I am very thankful for the talented doctors , nurses and specialists we have. Could the 40 mg daily statin be too much for me?

My Husband had been taken Atorvastatin for nearly 20 years. He had no real side effects until about 3 years ago when he developed joint pain in one knee. This gradually deteriorated and spread to both legs causing him to need a stick for support when walking. We struggled to get him a GP appointment because it was during the pandemic, but when we did the Doctor did not seem too concerned and at no point mentioned the use of Statins. My Husband continued to deteriorate, with terrible pain in walking, lethargy and fatigue. He spent time in Hospital with kidney problems, he had urine retention and had a stent fitted in his kidney. He was in and out of Hospital last year when in August he became unable to move without assistance and was admitted for the last time. He died in September. I now have found out that a lot of his symptoms were probably caused by the use of Statins. Were the GP and Hospital negligent?

I have taken Atorvastatin for many years, most recently taking 40mg every other day. The Rx was from my cardiologist. Recently I have noticed some memory problems. I reported the memory problems to my internist during a wellness exam. The internist speculated that the problems could be side effects of the Atorvastatin and recommended that I discontinue taking it for three weeks as a test. I did so, and by three weeks the memory problems seem to have disappeared. I reported this to my cardiologist and he has discontinued the Atorvastatin until next month to establish a new baseline of cholesterol without the drug and will go from there. For your information, My age is 82 years.

Particularly in my hip joints and lower back after walking a certain distance. My hips and lower back have been X-rayed and no problems were found. The drug really lowered my bad cholesterol levels; however I developed severe muscle pain in my legs and had to stop taking it. I am now going the "natural" route recently taking Cholestipol and Red Yeast Rice. I was told it takes longer to show a reduction in high cholesterol levels but I am willing to bear with it until it shows reduction progress. I will never take a prescription statin again. I take it because I don’t believe aging has to mean having a heart attack or stroke. I discussed this with my cardiologist, and he told me that if I were to go off this med, my chances of dying would rise dramatically. Not ready to die at 68!

@@lessehead There are alternatives to statins. I’m on one after having to ditch them through developing rhabdomyolisis.

@@cocothebastard8464 I don’t have any side effects from statins. My cardiologist told me to take CoQ10 to get rid of the muscle cramps, and it works! I have no cramps whatsoever. He also told me to take fish oil, B3, and turmeric. My numbers are so much better from statins, so all good.

I have very severe muscle cramps in my legs and ribs I didn’t know this was a side effect. I wondered why. I will discuss with my cardiologist

Also. Bad muscle cramping in many areas. Stopped taking and cramping is reduced but at blood test showed increased cholesterol so doctor yelled at me and restarted at lower dose to monitor. Did I want stroke or cramps? Still confused

Three years ago March 28, 2018, I had a triple heart bypass. Two years and nine months later, I have six pills daily in my system, including atorvastatin. side effects, bruising, joint pains, excessive bleeding, depression and suicidal thought. I asked Jesus, did you not say your wounds have healed me, why then? So being me, I'm asking, seeking and knocking.. and I find myself of youtube. Eric Berg and Nadir are discussing reversing heart disease with nutrition. Long story short.. Since Christmas 2020, I'm off of my meds, and blood pressure and health are normal. Thank Dr Eric Berg, thank you Dr Nadir Ali, thank You Jesus Christ, amen :)
