    • @travisoliver6741
      @travisoliver6741 Před rokem +220

@@whataghost1524 I don't think it's ever actually said, but that is really the gist of the different between Dragon Communion, and the Dragon Cult. In Dragon Communon, you devour the hearts of dragons, stealing their powers, and quite a few of their abilities. But you are condemned to a miserable life as a Magma Wyrm, likely suffering from ego death. Theodorix's Magma states that his name lives on, but makes no mention of him as a Magma Wyrm and no references to his thoughts or opinions, unlike other dragons.
It's never stated anywhere, but Dragon Communion is definitely based on the story of Sigurd/Siegfried, who consumed the heart of Fafnir, an evil dragon that was once a dwarf, but became obsessed with his gold. The fates of Magma Wyrms is basically a mix of Sigurd and Fafnir's stories.
Dragon Cult Incantations, on the other hand, are given to those who worshipped dragons. Lansseax was said to have turned into a human to lead the Dragon Cult in Leyndell. She loved Vyke the most out of everyone, and gave him a cool lightning weapon. Apparently, only those loved by dragons can wreathe themselves in the lightning of them.
Gameplay-wise, there is nothing that actually indicates that these have differences in strength. Lorewise, it's evident that Dragon Communion is morally wrong, as dragons are shown to be sapient lifeforms, and Ekzykes, even while suffering from Scarlet Rot, fought away anyone trying to do so. However, those loved by dragons, such as Vyke, not only have the moral high ground, but are also blessed with the strength of dragons without running the risk of losing your humanity.

The other games such as ds1 for example had decent variety not to mention fighting the same enemy over and over again can take away from the significance of the fight. I was however more disappointed with the reuse of Fortissax/Lannseax as meager enemies within Farum Azula. Fortissax was supposed to be the greatest soldier of the dragons yet if he is simply another dragon then it takes something away from him, unless the two dragons are like Lannseax and Fortissax within a different time?I guess that would make sense considering the Fortissax variant is missing most of its HP.

@@fromsimp2pimp425 that makes hella sense when you consider the seemingly ancient version of the Elden Ring Rune or whatever it is that you can see in farum azula. It possesses much more than the current Elden Ring rune/insignia/whatever. So maybe the 3 fingers split from the "hand"/"five fingers", taking with it 3 of the heads of Placidusax, along with unknown runes of power? Also look at how intertwined Vyke (the assumed closest tarnished to becoming elden lord before we come along) is between his position as a knight loved by the dragons (he has special ancient dragon incantations), and his revision as a Frenzied Flame partaker (not sure what to call that).
At this point I feel like we can definitely count on 2 DLC's at least: 1 - Miquella and Formless Mother (because obviously), and 2 - 3 fingers and Shabriri. And honestly, with how assumed DLC 1 revolves around blood/an outer god, and assumed dlc 2 revolves around madness/an outer god, I think it's also highly possible that an assumed dlc 3 could revolve around the god of rot.
And then also maybe, since they had another completely separate game in production at the same time of elden ring, and with it being close to fruition, maybe that will be a DLC-type game that goes into more of the history of ancient times in the lands between?
Or maybe somewhere in one of those things they talk about the different lands mentioned throughout the game?
Regardless, I'm very excited to see what comes next in this series.

    A note on Eleonora
She holds the purifying tear, specifically meant to counter the bloodboon ritual which grants Mohg his strength. Furthermore, she wields Greyoll's roar, an ability which requires the death of the Elder Dragon. However, she can wield it even if we have not yet killed Greyoll.
It is my belief that Eleonora was attempting to amass draconic power to slay Mohg before he could form his Dynasty, hence the purifying tear, and used his bloodflame to stave off the negative effects of Dragon Communion. Hearts pump blood through one's body, and it is the hearts of the Dragons that is needed to harness their power. Thus, the introduction of Bloodflame may introduce a second "agent" into the blood of Eleonora, allowing her to wield both and cancel out the negative effects of one another. This is further supported by Dragon incantations and Bloodflame incantations both requiring Arcane to wield

The whole Dragon Communion thing goes to show that old chestnut from the Souls series: dragons are awesome and all, but please try not to become one, it isn't worth it.
As some others have said, this just shows how Dragons are such an important part of this world, even if their importance may not be as ingrained as in Dark Souls, for instance. Interesting also that Adula made a knightly vow to Ranni, like some Trolls are knights of the Carian Royal Family.
I also love the differences between the Ancient Dragons and the 'Modern' Dragons: The modern dragons are not covered in gravel stone but their hides are still stone-like and more bestial, and they can still put up a hell of a fight. But the gravel stone on their hearts proves the connection between them and the ancient line.

I don't think the undead nobles and commoners are tarnished. There are many different types of undead in this game because the concept of death has been warped for everyone, tarnished or not. The tarnished are specifically the army and followers of Godfrey who were divested of grace like Godfrey himself, sent away to die in wars outside the lands between, and after they died were resurrected specifically to return to the lands between and follow the guidance of grace. Surely not every undead person we see in the game was a part of Godfrey's army, I doubt the spirits of deer in the Mountaintops of the Giants, the Tibia Mariners, or the undead common folk digging away at ruins were a part of his army. They're just the various inhabitants of the land between living on in death. Regardless this is an awesome video, keep up the good work!

If the dragon lord was awaiting a return of the god, and they had interacted before, it would make sense that the Greater Will would take a physical form similar to a dragon when interacting with those in the lands between. @@toshi7429 you may be joking, but I think all souls games are part of a multiverse connected by the trees we can see in most of the games, because there's always Patches and a Moonlight Greatsword

I like to view Placidusax's role as Elden Lord in the ancient world similar to Godzilla's role in being protector of Earth. Placi acts more like an apex predator monarch, who simply probably exists as a symbol of power, order, and peace and probably didn't actually do much except probably work directly with his God and the other powerful dragons. The ancient world was probably more simple and didn't need complex governments, different kingdoms, borders, taxes, lawd and everyone or all species were likely treated fairly. So basically the dragons just kinda existed, kept the peace, and any smaller less powerful beings probably inevitable worshiped or built their belief systems around the influence of the dragons. I could be wrong, but that's the picture I got painted of the ancient world when dragons ruled; they probably didn't get aggressive until after all the drama that happened and they got kicked to the curb
Also, doesn't it say somewhere in the game that Placidusax was a kind and fair Lord? I could also be wrong, someone please let me know if it talks about him in a positive light. I mean "placid" is in his name which literally means calm or peaceful, or not easy to get upsetted so Placi was probably a super nice guy that didn't deserve his fate

The moment I saw Placidusax lingering in the air with two heads pointed up, I immediately made the connection to the pose the Two Fingers take when communing with The Greater Will. It makes me think that, perhaps, Placidusax was "beaten" into submission and shaped into a pseudo-Two Fingers. His heads were ripped off to strip him of his power and force him to bend to the Greater Will.
My other idea is that he once had five heads, a lordly number that was also symbolic of the original hand. But when the Three Fingers were deemed heretical and ripped off, so too were three of his heads.

Yeah I think those who became Wyrms were those who failed to fully merge and control the powers growing within them. As we see with the Bodies of Wyrms such as their wings are badly deformed. So if the player has full control over the dragon incantations as well as learning the powers of other large figures such as Placidusax there's no telling what will happen to them when they start to transform. Chances are they'll become a dragon far more terrifying than Placidusax or Gransax. I really hope they give more insight on becoming a dragon in the DLC

I think that, while the dragon god was linked to the Greater Will, they weren't it, and neither were they a primitive version of it.
My main reason for thinking that is that, if they were an Outer God, they wouldn't be able to flee, as they would never have been in the Lands Between to begin with.
Another reason is that Mohg couldn't just create his dinasty with just himself and his outer god, the Formless Mother. He needed Miquella, and specifically needed Miquella to attain godhood. This indicates that, to truly rule, you need not only a Lord and an Outer God, but also a normal god, like Marika is.
The fact that Placidusax breathes golden flames, an attack shared with the Elden Beast, that dragons are associated with gold, that the Golden Order accepted the dragon cult, the depictions of the Elden Ring in Farum Azula and that Elden Lord is reserved to the Lords that follow the Greater Will ( or at least the Order part of it, if you consider the Three Fingers and the Flame of Frenzy to be related the Greater Will ) ,as indicated by the fact that the player is the Lord of Frenzied Flame or the Lord of Night ( the name is given by the Nox Swordstress armor set ), and not an Elden Lord in the Flame of Frenzy and Age of Stars endings, make me think that Placidusax and the Dragon God ruled just like the other Elden Lords and their gods, under the Greater Will.
In this theory, the Dragon God is just like Marika, a vessel for the Elden Ring. They may have, just like Marika would, changed their mind about the Greater Will and the Age they installed. That, and that, Placidusax stopped all their duties of Lord to just wait for the Dragon God to return might have been why Radagon, loyal to the Golden Order far more than to Marika, was not only chosen as Elden Lord, but also fused with Marika, to prevent her from fleeing as well as to have a Lord that wouldn't abandon everything this easily.
