This video is a life-saver. None of the optometrists I've gone to, save for one, ever tried to properly fit my glasses to my head. The first place I went to actually let me pick out child's frames when I was in high school and never said a word in warning. The place after that looked at my old glasses and laughed, which was where I actually found out what the first place had done.

Exact same thing happened to me. The ladies in the optometry office let me pick out child's frames and never said anything to me. I was in agony, they were tight on my temples, and I kept going back for adjustments, and I started thinking that I was crazy because they were still too tight, and they still never said anything to me. I only found out because I went to a different branch that they owned. What's wrong with people!

Recently I have been watching a few of your videos. I like how you don't edit out little bloops of even silence. I watch so many videos that are exhausting simply because the edited result is unnatural and "fast forwarding".
I come to realize that I never used the expertise of the salesperson. The optometrist may measure the right corrections, but when it comes to finding comfortable glasses I settled for "whatever".
Long time ago I told myself that nose pads are not comfortable and I went with contact lenses. Now I need reading glasses, so I opted for double focus glasses with a bridge as opposed to pads. My most recent pair look great, but they slide off my head when I look down. The hook behind my ear is pretty much straight and I use a workaround with "Anti-Slip Eyeglass Ear Grips Hooks". When I picked up my glasses, the sales person told me that this frame is not much adjustable.
Now I wonder, why did they sell them to me?
Also, now I wear hearing aids and the specialist was wondering if my frame would cover the microphone and reduce the benefit.
I scheduled an appointment for my eye exam, and now I need to pay attention to the expertise of the person who will fit my glasses. Perhaps instead of browsing the displays with frames I should ask them to give me a few ideas of perfect fitting frames.

Nose pads are such a double edged sword, but I do find that modern ceramic pads have a REALLY good feel to them when properly fitted and adjusted well.
Some opticals really just have sales people. See this a lot in the HVAC industry too, they'ld rather send out a salesperson to pusha new unit on you than a true technician to actually diangose and fix a problem....
Hearing aids are definitely a tricky situation, but there are ways of adjusting the frame to fit well and still avoid the mic area of the devices :) Just takes a little know how.
Definitely advise that, always! A good pro helping you can make so much of a difference, but they can be tough to spot. The basic knowledge here will help you have a better understanding at least, so dive through the fit and adjusting playlist to have a good core starting point (sounds like you've already started and gone quite a ways already, so kudos & thank you for that!)

Very helpful video. I'm struggling a lot with my new pair of glasses. Adjusted it 6 times and it's still wonky. Now I understand why.
Thank you for this video because I thought it was always my headset causing the problem but turns out my glasses were adjusted wrong and they had too much clamping force so when you add headphones on it makes a dig into my head even more.

Ugh I can relate so much to the oily nose problem, not from meds, but I was blessed with an absurdly greasy nose 😂.
Unfortunately, it brings a lot of traffic to the channel. I've been successful in teaching youtube to recommend a replacement video only once, but deleting just isn't an option unfortunately :(

Nevaaarrr!!! 😂 lots of amsterdam colorwayabto choose from, but this blue was 1 of 2 and I foolishly sold my backup #2... well.. I should say a customer made me sell it while it was sitting on my desk so I could decide on the perfect alternative lens to it 😂

Why don't all opticians know these things? Mine always takes my glasses and lays them on a table. He says that they are not level, so they are adjusted wrong. The two sides have to be different to look and feel right. I even told him that I had bilateral otoplasty, so my ears are not the same on both sides. Nope! He messes up my glasses and sends me home in misery. Finally, I quit him. You need to go on the speaking circuit to opticians!
Unfortunately, there's not much for standardized optician education programs, so it really comes down to a "how much do you want to learn approach. Most faces and people aren't symmetrical, glasses should almost never fit the table. 😶
I am 70 years old and lately my glasses have been causing sores on the boney bridge of my nose. i try to keep them way down on my nose to avoid these contact sores.to allow them to heal. I wear plastic frames because metal frames with pads catch my hair. I have been looking for tips for this problem. I don't know how to stop this.
That’s a little tougher, an acetate bridge that fits well should spread the contact over a very large area and prevent that issue all on its own. Sounds like your plastic frames may not fit you well.

As for nose pads getting caught in your hair… stop putting your glasses on your head. 😂

Sounds like the whole frame needs a good going over to get back to a solid starting point, that's a little tougher without knowing all aspects of what goes into a good fit. Sorry this wasn't the exact answer you needed, but a good optician should be able to get you back I to shape assuming no mechanical failures with the frame itself 🙂

Totally fine. Worry more about how it fits on the face and that it follows the curve of your skull rather than how any one part looks :)
Should the glasses fit snug on the side of the head or you need to leave a little space over there?
Depends on the frame design really, but in very general terms, they should start to touch (ideally not squeeze) just a buy back from where the temple starts, and from there follow the contour of the head. The more area you can spread that touch out over the more grip and comfort you have (as long as it's not too tight, too tight will still slip.. and or hurt) 🙂
How about for those who have metal frames? My optical wont fix it because I brought my own frame when I got my lens from them

Should I order single vision for sports under my snowboard goggles? Falling hard goggles fly off lost glasses and some even snapped in half. Looking for a cheap solution. Or go bifocal? I run progressives, but don't want to use my only pair due to expense, and then I end up w no glasses. 2.5 , 2.75.
Also swim in a lake in the summer. Fishing too. Jogging..
I would stick with SV and a giggle insert honestly. The times you need intermediate just have an extra pair on your bag for the small stuff. 100% with you on this, not just on cost, but I would never sacrifice the distance periphery in speeds like snowboarding.
You can find goggles inserts from various mfg but there use to be some generic universal ones on Amazon for around $20. Throw a basic cr uncoated rx distance lens and keep rolling. I had a customer I did this for for YEARS. 3 pairs a year or so. Sometimes more for obvious reasons 😂

I find the adjustment and design of the temple makes FAR more difference than the measured length
Help, why are there ‘rainbows’ around the edge of my half frame lens? Do i need to change the lens to cast away the rainbow?
Lens material could have some affect but in general it’s a factor of half rim with a polished edge and I’m assuming a decent amount of minus power for a thicker ledge. Change frames if you don’t like it, because it will be there to some degree no matter what.

What about straight arm temples like my Oakley eyeglasses? The retaining screw that holds the temple as well as controls the 'pressure' of opening and closing the temples, gets loose over time, and eventually the temples just flop open and closed. I've been told this is caused by closing the temples when you store your glasses, causing the screw to 'strip out' over time. I'm looking for a way to fix this issue; was thinking something like a VERY TINY amount of Loc-Tite on the the screw threads, or nail polish, or something similar to strengthen the hold. Any ideas folks?
Nail polish all day long. Just enough grip to keep it from loosening bit easy enough to break loose when you need it to. It's actually due to play in the difference in the screw vs barrel threads 🙃
I have Oakley airdrop. My biggest issue is they touch my eyebrows and after about 3 hours the nose is little irritation and leaves marks. Any ideas ?

Hi, I'm wondering as a wide faced person with a low bridge would metal arms on plastic frame be more flexible than a full on plastic. I bought the latter plastic ones and they hurt behind my ears terribly until broke them in. I also am wondering does the fact that metal arms are placed slightly lower than the top of the frame ( current plastic ones extend straight from the top like yours)help me with my low nose bridge issue. This from someone who orders online due to lower cost and doesn't really have access to adjustments from physical stores. Thank in advance for your answer.
for starters no matter the glasses source a professional adjustment is well worth the cost when done properly. Comfort matters hugely! :) As to your question, tough to say, as the overall design plays a larger role than just where on the frame the temples mount. Many plastic frames also feature temples that mount lower, but often they need to be higher for the proper lens tilt for best vision :)

in my experience(country) professional adjustments are done soley for customers that have purchased from them. As the people working there are salesman, and the opticians themselves do not handle customers only glasses in a separate facility.
What an interesting way of handling things 😵💫. Here at least we will adjust and charge fees accordingly. At any rate, for self adjustment basic metal frames can be easier to manipulate by hand.

TMI (maybe useful for someone so7)
I'm a female with extremely large square head, low nose bridge and big round close set, deep set eyes. My first online purchase was Zenni #124218. It's a robust plastic frame, that's meant to be oversized(on regular skulled people) so the temples are significantly tapered in from the general Width of the frame. It hurt me behind the ears like a b and it took me months to break them in by wearing them over headbands and such. I now purchased Crullé Thrive frames and have no issues with discomfort around the ears even though they're slightly narrower, the bridge size is more fitting for my low bridge nose. So functionally they serve me well. However, if esthetics are taken into consideration, the virtual try on is faulty on both sites cause it keeps narrowing your face unrealistically. So yes the Zenni's were more flattering for wide faces, and the Crullé's are extremely delicate, small and unflattering especially with the yellow tint of blue blocker (huge practical gain for me though).
@Modest Optician distributers of the frames put everything over 140 into size L. Also they don't put much info on the material other than"artificial mass". The Crullé one have "flex" as special feature( no info on the site or knowledge on my part about spring hinges) Temple/ bridge relation is something that's mentioned in the Asian fit (wide, high cheekbones, fat cheeks, low nose bridge). Companies that specialise in that Do not ship to my country. But it's very on point with my face, even though I'm not asian. The virtual try one says I'm size M cause my close set eyes align with the credit card against the center of my face. So I'm much better off looking at the referential Asian model and the fit of the frames, than relying on the virtual try on that isn't scaled properly.

You can, but I would be cautious as most cheaper injection plastics are brittle and prone to breaking. Nylon frames breaking is less of a concern but there is no adjustment to be made due to composite hinges, not a whole lot to be done in those cases unfortunately.

no matter how hard i try fixing the temple at the back (either bending to an 80 degree angle, or releasing the angle to maybe a 45 degree), the frame still kept faling down. any ideas?
Lots of them! Unfortunate that’s the nature of eyewear, it’s rarely just one parameter that needs tweaks and more often it’s a combination of things not working quite right together. This video gives a bit more comprehensive look at the topic, but they also need to grip the head properly from the temples back, not just behind the ears :). All that assumes the frames are well balanced on the face too and not overly tight anywhere which, can in fact, cause them to slip even more voraciously.

@@slow-living_03 the nose pads will bear some weight, but shouldn’t be significantly bothersome. They generally shouldn’t feel *tight* as they’re not what’s keeping the glasses from sliding forward and down :)

I'm about to buy a pair glasses that caught my eye online, these specific ones aren't available anywhere near me so that I could try them out, so I am using my current glasses as a reference and comparing it with their measurements/VR try-on.
The frame width is 139mm, a couple of millimeters shorter than my current glasses. Do you think I could manage to loosen it enough to make it work? The frame in question is the Moscot Lemtosh if that helps
The lemtosh comes in a handful of sizes doesn’t it? At any rate, yes easily adjustable for a couple millimeters worth of full front width.

150 length are really hard to get
They can be harder to find, but depending on the design of the temple that number may not mean much. Had someone recently talking about he had to have 180, turns out in the past he had always worn cable temples and those do indeed measure MUCH differently and are very long because the curl is measured straight.

If it’s an acetate frame most likely a balance or fit issue. If it’s fit it can’t be adjusted easily without major reworking. If it’s just front heavy :

I recently bought some frames I really wanted from the UK online but was having a hard time adjusting them, watching a few of your adjustment videos helped me get them just right. I had a bad experience with another pair I bought. I loved the frames and the opticians were nice, but they just couldn't get them adjusted right after having them adjust over a dozen times. Anyway, it's nice to have someone explain what to look for and how to make that bend to account for it (also just... what you can and can't do to a frame to make adjustments, I think that's another source of confusion). Why don't they just build them like reading glasses. Never had a problem with reading glasses they always fit perfect. My prescription glasses i just got pinch behind the ears, trying to adjust them now
I wanna know what reading glasses you're buying. Most people I encounter have more pairs of readers either sitting around or in the bin because they all fall apart so poorly. Most of the frames I work with are problem free though, but you're talking my average price of entry for frames is $450+++++. I havne't seen really well made frames under $300 since 2020, and before that it was still in the 200 area.
How do you correct an arm that is too long? I bought 145 and needed 140 or 139. Also they are plastic material
5mm is far from anything I would call too long unless it’s MASSIVELY too long to begin with. It’s all about adjustment here and getting those bends in the proper place so it tucks nicely. 10mm or more, yeah it’s time to think trimming, but that’s a very involved task for plastic frames that the average wearer isn’t up to
That was just what I was told at the optical place that did my 1st and only adjustment. I purchased them online and was my 1st time ordering Rx glasses online. I’ve never had the arm so long and kinda make sense as now the slip of my face

Very easily. Too tight behind the ears pushes the frame upwards from the back throwing off the balance making it front heavy and prone to sliding. Surprised it’s not hurting your nose too. Follow the video tips, or find another optician to do the fitting. I know many who adjust like that…. And I wish it on no one.

Would it be unreasonable to use an already well fitting pair of glasses as a template for adjusting another pair of glasses? That mastoid area causes me so many problems but I have a few older pairs of glasses that were adjusted by technicians with magic hands.
Absolutely! You have to keep in mind some things in terms of the material and thickness differences, but I have very often used a current fit pair I've done for basing another adjustment, at least into a close starting point :)

Sounds like a bad fit or poorly made frame more than an issue with plastic frames in general. There’s not much. Lee comfortable than a high quality acetate with proper fit and adjustment. Hopefully you can get it sorted out or find a better adjustment :)

Funny you say that, it’s far from mainstream but there is a company utilizing exactly that concept. 3DNA uses 3D scans of the head to build a custom frame for you that fits. But even then, if the adjustment at the end is trash, so is the fit. 🤷♂️. 3 companies I know of that together offer the best ergonomics (fit and feel) and the widest range of fit combined across all 3 TC Charton, Blake Kuwahara, Laibach & York. Nobody else comes remotely close to these three in ergonomics, and they all make some pretty cool shit TBH 😂
