Is that Nathan’s brother working for Toyota?
Exactly what i was thinking 😂
Yes! Sounds just like him and same mannerisms, etc.
I glanced this comment before hearing him speak and didn't think the resemblances would be THAT close. When he started talking I almost fell out of my seat!
I know! If you just listened to the episode you’d think it was Nathan for sure.
Right😂. Just close your eyes and listen to him😂.
I love this engineer, he explains everything with ease for the common people to understand.
He needs to love himself and skip a meal a day
you mean Andre explains it well...
He does! But I see him more as a marketer… he’s basically selling a multi-use platform as if it was specifically designed for the 🌮
He needs to lay off the Taco's.
You mean you enjoy propaganda made for you?
With the impending loss of the V6 and rumors of it growing...I blinked and bought a 2023. I had always wanted a Gen 2 sized Taco and when I heard it was gonna "grow" in 2024, that was going in the wrong direction for me. The 2023 has been prefect for me in every way.
They have to make it “grow” to meet mpg requirements 😔 government messing things up
I just snatched a 2023 while they were still available. Happy so far, but looking to re-gear soon.
Didn’t really grow, kept the same overall dimensions unless you get crew cab long bed, it’s wider though and longer wheelbase
Just picked up a 2023 or in lunar rock. Plan on keeping it a while.
@JN0777 the length is the same, but both the width and height grew a couple inches.
I can’t believe that the Tacoma now starts at $32,000! That’s just insane! Whatever happened to the Tacoma Starting at $23,000???
10 years ago it was 23k
Before you were able to buy a 4cylinder 4x4 Access cab manual brand new for about 24k msrp
To be fair, the dollar today is worth 50% less than when the Tacoma started at $23k lol
A more relevant comparison is that the trd sport 4x4 of the previous generation started at $34,500 like 3 years ago. Now it’s gonna be $41,800. That’s a joke
I bought my v6 prerunner in 2006 for 24k out the door.
I wish we could have gotten one of the engineers that built the new engine to go through and basically put us at ease about the longevity of the turbo 4. I love everything about the new Taco but that engine worries me greatly
Reliability is definitely not gonna be the same as the v6 and the 2.7 4 cylinder on long term. This new taco engine was first released in 2021 on the Lexus nx and so far for the few year it been out it been good so hopefully it'll be reliable for the long run
It is a Japanese engine, will be far more reliable than the old one
@@mundayum wrong it will be far more reliable
the old V6 tacoma is the best, the new one turbo is garbage
The difference between Toyota and basically every other manufacturer is that if there are first year issues, the WILL resolve them. The others(GM) will wait until they have a class action lawsuit or the NTSB forces them to fix it. Otherwise they screw the consumer over and tell them to "Buy American" again. This coming from a GMC Sierra (POS) owner.
LOVE the Cat positioning. No more need to spend an extra few hundred on a shield. Those shield companies will find another vehicle to continue making them for.
Until the cat goes bad, then it's going to be 2k in labor just to get to it.
@@gs6810the pain will be worth it knowing a crackhead was never able to steal it in the first place.
@@gs6810 I've never had a cat go bad....or anybody I know
It'll cost a fortune to replace when it goes bad... From the looks of it at least double in price....
From the pricing so far, they could be pricing their normal customers out of the 4th generation. I've owned 5 Tacomas, and was looking forward to the 4th gen, but now I'm not very confident. Also, dealerships are scamming customers already with markups over MSRP.
Great work Andre
As far as the V6 in tacos, the old 1-GR engine was the best, just my opinion.
I love 2nd gen, with that engine and hope it will last another 222k miles!!
Love the look of that 2 tone black/ brown taco in the background in this video, it is sweet looking truck!
Great review. Technical stuff made understandable. First time I understood how sway bar disconnect worked.
I want Sheldon to autograph my 2024 Tacoma. This man is a treasure and hero to those of us who have been waiting on this next gen truck.
It's good to see people with real passion for what they do at work.
This guy is a vast pool of knowledge
I’m old and have had 18 Toyota trucks so far. I just want the vent window back. Loved that feature in the 20R.
OH YES. Window VENTS. PUH-LEEZE!! I'm oh-so-sure those are solely to blame for lost MPGs but, y'know, compared to running AC all the time, I bet window-vents ain't that much of a drag-issue.
Good video, love it!!!
New Tacoma is way better than the new Tundra in design. Tacoma will stay King of Mid sizers.
As a second generation tundra owner the third generation has zero interest for me. I would rather buy one of the new Tacoma.
@@SuperSnakePlisskenthat was the whole idea by Toyota 😅
no it wont, its too under powered now
@@sapperROSS how much power do you need?🤣
@@sapperROSSThe new 2.4L turbo has the same HP but 50 lbs more torque. It will do just fine.
Excellent episode!!! 😁
Awesome video !!! Suggestion, don’t interrupt so much when the Engineer is explaining/answering your questions 🙏🏻
Max: That is a new current problem in the media. The interviewer interrupts rudly before the guest finishes her sentence. AARRGGHH
Reability is the greatest concern.
Reliability and QC
Everyone questioned us 3GT cuz of that old testament 4.0. I can show u 3gt v6s going 300k Miles with just oil changes. Tacomas havent dropped the ball on reliabilty. I doubt toyota is going to mess up with this powerplant.
@@CanadianOffroad4x4 even if everything works well the turbos and hybrid battery will have to be replaced at a very high cost
Only time will tell. The old school drivetrain was just so under-stressed and reliable you just hate to see it go away.
@@theoutdoordad7395Tell that to the rest of the world that’s been on turbo Toyotas for decades
Oh wait, they’re still just fine 😂
Great review, Andre
I wish they would have kept the classic rounded rear roof edges of the previous gen over the new one. It was iconic to Tacoma.
i wish the rear doors opened on the xtra cab
Get Sheldon on again to explain more! That was brilliant!!
New frame's bolts are already rusting. Meanwhile the 3rd gen demonstration frame they had "sat outside for nearly a decade," and looked better than the fresh from the factory new frame. Honestly, great selling point for the old gen.
He said those frames have been outside on their lot for ten years
@janetairlines1351 the new frame couldn't have been. And the rust is leaking down the chassis.
he said half a decade so 5 years my guys
Hmm... idk I usually go tacoma... but I think the Colorado trailboss is better for price. But the turbo... makes me nervous... friend had to replace his 3 times. Is this gunna be the same?
I have a ‘21 and it’s no surprise their value is now in reason due to the removal of the V6.
I can't wait to buy one!
Sub'd & just shared this to all the FB Taco groups I'm in lol. Great info..... I sort of want one now lol
Really like everything with the redesign except that if Toyota did reduce the size of the gas tank to 18 gallons as reported by other CZcams channels, that will be disappointing.
Agreed, I bought an Outback over a Rav4 and part of it was an 18.5 vs 14.5 gallon tank size. I always want at least 5 gallons in reserve so to me it's a question of 13 vs 9 so that means I would have to fill up about 50% more often with a Rav4. That's 2 days less per month after a long day at work that I don't have to stop for gas.
I'll be keeping my 2nd gen going as long as possible. Not a fan of this 4th gen. Third gens were cool but you can't beat that 4.0 with a manual.
Old: 45k plus MSRP
New: 55k plus MSRP
That’s your Difference!
More cost for less reliability 👍
@@m.687 They want more parts to break, so that they can collect data and then when 2025 come around. They have fixed major problems hopefully.
Great info here
Just curious why pricing is stated without destination/handling charges. I get why manufacturers like to reference a lower number, but automotive publications, I think, should always include destination as that is always part of the purchase price. $31,500 starting msrp is really $33,000.
It’s just deception
@@paulhunter9613 Seems everything in sales is a deception. I hate buying a new car. The schemes and scams that are basically fraud are somehow legal!
MSRP is standard, destination charge is not.
@@HAHA.GoodMemeWjat do you mean? Destination charges are liated on the window sticker and is a non-negiotiable component of the price.
Destination charge is completely standard. It doesn’t matter if you buy the truck from a dealer 3,000 miles from the factory or from the dealer in the same town as the factory, literally 5 miles from the assembly plant. The destination charge is the exact same in both cases. TFL discussed this. It’s a complete money grab.
Just looking at that trd pro behind the frame. Looking forward to more information on that one
I like many of the improvements, but I am not ready to get rid of my 2006 TRD Offroad ;)
Keep it! It’s most likely paid off.. a paid off truck is the best truck
I was looking forward to getting a Pro in the spring or summer. But, with an expected price not including tax & delivery of over $60k; I rather get chevy zr2 Colorado for $48.3 with delivery included but not tax. I hope people buy more colorados instead of these tacomas. Toyota really sold out the everyday driver who wanted to get into a quality truck. Shame on you Toytoa.
I’d look into the new frontier pro4x, it’s a NA V6, and a good value. I haven’t heard great things about the Chevy turbo 4 gas…
👎 the 4 bangers
@@AsianNIGMAwhat bad have you heard? Those engines have been doing very well in the full size Silverado and have had well over 5 years to work out the kinks. Any new car is going to have issues to first year, the Tacoma will be no exception. But what have you heard about the Chevy? I haven’t heard anything power train wise
Pro is gonna be more like 70k
Eh, it’s nice but I’m sticking with my 3rd gen for now. No upgrades big enough for me to get a 4th gen.
This engineer is awesome! Thought he would be a twat, but, turned out to be a rad dude.
i love how you are wearing the same shirt in the earlier shots vs the new comparison review.
This was very helpful seeing the naked chassis to compare the differences. Any chance that Toyota has the "changes under the skin" with the Sequoya and/or the Tundra (I think they are the same chassis?). I am considering buying a Sequoya, and would love to see it for that vehicle.
good video
Will sell like hotcakes
Next time you talk to Sheldon ask him why they didn't implement a drivetrain similar to Mitsubishi Pajero's SuperSelect that has both transfer case and central differential, which allows you to drive in 4L and 4H on dry pavement and to switch to 2L and 2H when you do not need the front wheels. Tacoma offers either transfer case with a fixed 50/50 torque distribution between the front and the rear axles and part-time 4x4, or a central differential and full-time AWD (available only on Limited trim)
Love it, was gonna buy the new Colorado but were waiting for the Tacoma.
I personally think that the 3rd Gen is way better Truck. I’ll take the V6 reliability over the new hybrid.
Agreed. Folks keep talking about the improved MPG but Toyota just released the new 24's MPG rating depending on model and it's not impressive. When you have a 4x4, the old V6 actually gets only 1 MPG worse than the new 4x4 turbo. We can count on the V6 with it's 'ancient' tech and 'outdated' 6 speed transmission to run and run and run. It's going to most likely take Toyota a few years to iron out the quirks on the new gen. I don't want to be a guinea pig. Also, user maintenance is a lot friendlier on a NA engine over a turboed engine. Just picked up a new 2023 4x4 V6 this week, couldn't be happier.
@@Eugeneden2010then i guess i can REALLY count on my 2010's 4.0 v6 and ancient 5 speed auto😂
Time will tell if a turbo 4 can last like a V6.. There will b many 1st year bugs like n e new model. I hate the stupid annoying stop/start. Don’t care that it can be turned off.
Hopefully, there won't be any bug on the engine side of things since it was introduced in 2021 and the Lexus nx was used as the guinea pig for this engine.
I am not an expert, but that boxed frame and that little device to move the roll bar, bring to my mind the words rust and reliability.
Plenty of fully boxed frames which are just fine, and the sway bar disconnect is a pretty simple electronic device.
Like you said, you are NOT an expert
Never thought I’d see a truck person complain about a boxed frame
The sway bar disconnect is a type of KDSS which Toyota is famous for. They use it on many if not all Lexus GX and it's an option on the 4Runner. It's a very proven system so I'm sure the Tacoma version will not be a weak point, nor will the boxed frame. This is a move in the right direction.
Ever since I got my 3rd gen, I've always been thinking about what the next gen might look like compared to it. Now that I see it, I'm glad I have a 3rd gen over both the 4th and 2nd. For example, the headlights proportion looks the best.
How does it compare to your Colorado Trail Boss?
Wonder if they did any extra rust protection with that boxed frame
Man I hope they build the X Runner with the tundra V6 engine. Perhaps a GR Tacoma X Runner😍
They had one at sema twin turbo V6.
Certain design updates I like but I’m not sure I’m a fan of the bulkier look. Also, the non-functional ‘vents’ are bigger in the front and I think makes it look tacky. Still a good lookin truck though, and it’s a Tacoma!
Since they are all build in Mexico I wonder if I can travel down there and pick one up for half the price 😅😂😅
"I'm here to taste-test avocados, pineapples, tomatoes and molé. Oh, I might as well get one of these Taco's, too... " ha ha
Toyota nailed this launch.
FRAME RECALL in the making!!! Looks like my son’s Jeep TJ. The closed frame rails were really rotten. We live near Detroit and open frame rails last longer. Even if you don’t wash the frame in the spring the rain cleans it out.
All 1/2 tons have boxed frames.. I don't hear recalls on them.
Also don't forget frame recall was on there C channel frames!
Sheldon seems like a great guy! Thanks for this video! I wasn't aware that there are Mexican built Toyota's. Anyone here own one / any concerns with build quality? I've only owned 2 Japanese built Toyota vehicles. It's a little, trivial thing, but it would feel "wrong" to not have a J-VIN number on a Toyota. 😱 I hope that the long awaited 6th gen 4runner will still be made in Japan (my planned next vehicle purchase).
Very nice thank you for the education just cannot wait for the order bank to open up on Toyota
Should’ve asked him if the frame is so much beefier why did the towing capacity not get increased?
He mentioned in the initial press event that they weren't going for bigger towing numbers and said buy a Tundra if you want more towing capability.
Owners weren't asking and didn't want to sacrifice drive ability.
I would have liked to know why they chose not to use the KDSS system found in the 4Runner and LandCruiser?
Glad I found a 23 when I did. Smaller turbo motors have to work harder than larger naturally aspirated motors. Once moisture and dirt get into that boxed frame it will rust. The 300,000 mile days are gone. Hopefully people who choose to get one will change their oil every 3000 miles.
I went out and ordered a 23 offroad with manual trans as soon as all the rumors of 4cyl turbo & no manual trans started. Well they kept the manual, but no more NA engine. I appreciate all the work the engineers put into the new changes, but I personally could care less about most of them. Simplicity, reliability, longevity is why this was my first ever Toyota. Like other posters have stated, more complexity, more bells & whistles = more chance of failure and unreliability. Hopefully the new model will prove reliable, but I'll stick with proven platform until then.
@@shovelgeorge8851 Same here. I blinked as soon as I heard the V6 "might" be going away last Spring. I wasn't even in the market for anything, much less a truck. I spotted my perfect Sport version of exactly what I wanted (even in Lunar Rock), Premium everything, short bed, dual cab, A/T and loaded right down to the toneau cover. It was nearing completion and was in my driveway within two weeks. I paid $45,300 upper Midwest last April/23.
@@kayakdan48 very similar story. I wasn't in the market either but something told me it's now or never. Told dealer what I wanted, he had 20 trucks coming in only 1 manual trans. He said one matching my list was scheduled to still be built, so I Ordered in April, built during May, delivered in June. Couldn't be happier.
Not sure about the turbo 4, but the hybrid engine will probably last that long. Had a Prius with 255k (before selling it) and no issues at all. Only time will tell.
lol one of the biggest complaints of the current Tacoma is the V6 and 6 speed. It has no low-end torque so you have to rev the crap out of it. Combined with a sluggish 6-speed that constantly hunts for gears on the highway.
Well done Andre! Also are Nathan and Engineer Sheldon Brown related?
I must be in the minority but I think the exterior of the old truck looks better. Interior is a big upgrade. That said, I was really hoping this truck got a little longer (given it won't be redesigned for another 15-20 years). Just like all the full-size trucks have ballooned in size, I was personally hoping this truck gained some extra cab/bed space. I wish someone made a truck closer in size to the 1st gen tundra that could fit actual humans in the rear seats. I love how the engineer for this truck referenced building code from 64'. I get the need for maneuverability but come on its almost 2024.
I actually hoped for it to get smaller like it used to be.
Get a tundra dude. Not everything needs to be huge. Goodness 😆
Well, "3 inches of length clearance" ain't much. Not with this wheelbase but I am glad that lip-service was paid to opening the doors inside a garage. I really don't like having my 3-car garage gobbled up by two cars just to have doors open on both. sigh... where's that newer, wider garage? Or do I hope for gull-wings or sliding van doors?
When you look at the interior dimensions on the double cab between the 5 ft and 6 ft beds it says that the 6 ft bed version has more legroom than the 5 ft bed. Shouldn't the double cab be the same dimensions on the inside?
I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x2 in that Calvery Blue.
I thought that color only came in 2019 production year 🤔.
I like the red/black color of that gen-4 in the background but I MUST have a 6' bed.
Did they change the frame any to accommodate the seat higher or your feet lower? How did they make the cab taller inside?
It's taller inside and seating is like a truck. Not like sitting in a Civic that the outgoing model was
Did they actually make proper drain holes in the frame unlike the first gen.
Not to sound like a broken record but I bought my 22 Tacoma new when I came out it’s a SR v6 4x4 got super lucky by avoiding all the dealership add on charges at the time and basically paid msrp I paid in the ball park of 32-33,0000 if I wanted to get that same truck in the newer model with a comparable engine I’d pay like 10,000 more and to me the improvements they made honestly do not apply to the average person. I use my truck to haul stuff and as a daily driver. The towing capacity stayed the same and the gas mileage went up a little bit but reliability went down potentially. Unless you’re an off roader the new Tacoma really sees no benefits which makes me mad because it’s truly a great truck just as a truck and not an off roader but it seems everyone only cares about off roading
Please do a comparison with original tundra 05’ ish next to a new Tacoma. Heck I’d drive my tundra 05’ up from Denver
Is 4th gen going to be reliable though? I want one but concerned especially with increased price.
Looks like some bolts are already rusting 😮😮😮😮
@tomstarcevich1147 Meanwhile the 3rd gen demonstration frame they had "sat outside for nearly a decade," and looked as good as the fresh from the factory new frame. Honestly, great selling point for the old gen.
I would like to know if the headroom, for the driver has increased
My biggest issue when i sat in a Tacoma was interior space. I am not a very big person and i felt they were cramped. I am not in the market for a mid sized truck but if i was i would definitely need to sit in a Tacoma to see if that interior space was improved or not.
It def has gotten better
Thats why whenI was shopping for a Tacoma, I got a 1st gen Tundra instead. Similar exterior dimensions but way more interior room, especially head room
@@David.D3 I would never sell a first gen tundra. They are tanks
We need Nathan to interview the Toyota engineer now!🤣🤣
I wonder if there is room for a dual tank setup. 🤔. Would be awesome for long road trips.
You can add a dual tank to any truck on the road as it is called putting it in the bed.
@@jamesm568 then you will end up with a 3.5’ bed..😳good for groceries
@@paulhunter9613 That's the drawback. That's what most people use a truck for anyway is groceries.

I love the Taco. had 2017 manual but had trade in for f150 to tow 5th trailer.😢

Old still looks better. Simpler lines. Smaller grille.
Did they fix the horrific driving position? Does it still handle like a motor home? Still have crappy brakes?
Great video! Is it me or does that Engineer sound a LOT like Nathan?
The cavalry blue alone is why I won't upgrade my 19 to a new one. That color is my absolute favorite on any car ever
I had a 19 Tundra 4.6L in Cavalry Blue, I loved the color but the 4.6L wasn’t geared to pull my small trailer. I keep seeing a cavalry blue Rav around and want it.
@dougsmith7195 oh sweet! Yeah there are a few rav's and a few camry's in cavalry around here.
True. Toyota's colors are otherwise too bland.
Dose the hood scoop work or is it show ?
The old one aged well
That was my though too. Sat outside for a decade and looks almost as good as the fresh from the factory new gen? I'll take the old gen!
Turbo is only the way to go for power not longevity. Hope they thought replacing better then they did on the new Tundra. Will miss the 500k mile plus V6. Not expecting selling 20k of them a month.
I fear 100k engine-life may be pressing it, too.
I was kind of interested until they said built in Mexico. I’m glad they said that because I really don’t want any vehicle with a turbo. I’ll be keeping my 2016 for a while yet.
is this new vehicle equipted with 4 wheel disc brakes?
Yes
Any change will see a Tacoma 16-23 trd sport doing off road?
Just to see how capable.
For the people the dot have off road .
Please
26 mpg on the highway and 23 combined? Numbers shown yesterday were quite lower
Amazing how much better the published MPG is with the new 8 speed auto vs. the 6 speed manual
Well the manual has a 4.30 rear end vs 3.58 in the auto. Thats a drastic change in highway RPMs soo
Previous version, V6, 4wd, was like 24 MPG HWY for auto, and 21 for 6MT.
Similar reasons I’m sure.
some sites shows the diff is only 1 MPG better then the V6 . lets see when people start driving and towing stuff
They have GOT to add an engine cover. Looks so much cleaner.
Fully boxed frame going to rot before too long. Once road salt gets in there.
Do current full boxed frame vehicles have issues? Aren’t the design and material more important than simply boxed vs c channel?
My 4Runner is boxed. It's a 2007 with ~130k and if I hadn't wire wheeled it; primer'd it; painted it and WoolWax'd it, the frame would be a total loss by now. I had to replace the front lower control arms due to rust (could not do an alignment anymore) and have replaced 3/4 of the brake lines; brackets; brake shields and a whole host of items. My #1 piece of advice for anyone buying ANY new vehicle that lives in an area where the roads get salted is to bring the vehicle home and immediately coat the entire underneath of it with WoolWax or Fluid Film or Surface Shield. And spray inside the frame rails; inside the doors and fenders.....anywhere you can get it. It will save your vehicle and a whole lotta pain and suffering and expense down the road. @@ALMX5DP
Shellys front is also supported by strong chassis
Did they address the previous generations crummy seating position where the seat was too low for normal height folks?
Apparently yes
In a different video he said something about raising both seating and the roof slightly to improve seating. I don't remember by how much though.
I owned a 17 tacoma v6. And that engine sucked. No power at all down low and always hunting for gears.!
I wish we had a whole listing matched with truck trim and the price to go with it.
Looks like that sway bar unit can probably be made to fit in a 2/3 gen.
I'm going to get the TDR off road with all the stuff I can get for it.
I bought a RAM 1500 this year. I test drove a 23 Tacoma TRD Sport and I was shocked at how loud it was on the road, any idea if the 24 is a lot quieter? I really had my heart set on a Tacoma until I actually drove one.
Loud? I had an trd off-road and thought it was super quiet.
Is that Nathan's cousin? They have similar voices
Maybe he’s from colorado? I’ve met a couple people from there with that exact accent
Have anyone noticed the diameter of from CV shaft at minute 2:40 ???? Holy smoke it’s hugeeee !!!
Like the exterior design and all the improvements. But the interior still appears pretty tight.
It’s a midsize. What the hell do you expect from it?
What are people’s obsessions with giant vehicles in this country?
Feeling like you're sitting on the floor is the Tacoma experience. If you want a midsize that doesn't feel like it was built for amputees, buy literally anything else.
