Alan was truely a unique talent. Sadly, despite ultimately achieving the American Record in the mile (3:46.91), he had what most would consider a disappointing career based on his potential. No world championship medals (only made two finals, best 8th place), no olympic medals (no finals). I still shake my head thinking about what could have been for him had he been "handled" differently. But hey, he was a great runner who still holds both of the most important mile records for americans (high school and the american record). Not too bad.

Honestly holding a record is usually more prestigious to other people. He will be remembered much longer for a record than a medal.

Please do a Tyson Gay: Driven episode. Him going from Lafayette to Arkansas to 2007 WC, to LONDON 2012 100m DQ, and his beginning downfall. Then perhaps his thoughts of his daughter's passing.

No, he was NOT a great INTERNATIONAL runner. Please note that I in no way take away the fantastic times he ran as a youngster in the USA.. But, but, but... in his whole career he only ever won TWO (2) international races. Both in July 2007. A 1500 m in Paris and a 1 mile in Belgium. That's it! His total international achievement. Yes he got to the Olympics in 2004 but he was very young and got knocked out in the heats. Then he failed to qualify for the 2008 games, even after his stellar 2007 year. So please keep things in perspective. Jim Ryan through to Steve Scott and on to Matt Centrowitz had far better careers.

I think two wins though would still qualify someone as being "great" though. Just my opinion.

Great runner, with some fast times , but 8th and 9th at the worlds was his best showing. In the scheme of things an American record mile but zip to show at the big meets. Contrast his career with Nick Willis, (slightly later contemporary) and I am sure Alan would swap it all for those two Olympic medals.
