  • What’s better than learning a new skill? Learning a new skill that makes you look as cool as western film heroes such as Lee Van Cleef. But how does one do that? Surely the gun play in western is fictional, but what isn’t is the pipe smoking. Something we can all learn how to do and that’s exactly what we’re going to do today.

    As a long time "piper" I always like to remind new aficionados that it's a Tamper NOT a Ramrod. Use gently like patting a bunny, not firmly setting a Minie Ball.

      Don’t want to jam up the air ways! Hard to enjoys the taste when the taste can’t even get to you! My grandpa taught me how to gently use the tamper! I’m sure he also used a ramrod in his day as well, so something tells me he was pretty decent at shooting and smoking!

    Great job! I believe packing a pipe is an art form. Pipes are actually quite relaxing.
    My father smoked a pipe, as did my mentor, great uncle Leo. Guess I picked it up from them.😏
    I made a tamper from a spent 45-70 case with a scraper I forged from a nail set into the base of a bullet. Pull the bullet from the case and clean away! Freaks people out when I tamp a pipe with it.😅
    Have fun, and keep an eye on your backtrail!🤠

      @SaintAndrewTV  Před 2 měsíci +2

      You know that question came up when I was filming! Can you use an exhausted bullet casing as a tamper? And leave it to my old pal, Wade, to give me that answer! I figured it was possible, but I should’ve known that your ingenuity already took you down that road! Now I’ll have to create one myself!

    • @anangryranger
      @anangryranger Před 2 měsíci +2

      @@SaintAndrewTV Yup, I made one for me, and one for my dad. With a fully equipped reloading system, it was a snap to reform the case, and with over 75 different bullet moulds to choose from, I cast a 405gr roundnose from pure linotype (very hard stuff). Drilled a hole in the base and some JB Weld to hold the scraper in place. Bingo! Instant cool pipe tamper.
      I'd build you one, but I know you're always creating something, and take personal pride in doing so. You could make one and feature it in a video! That would be cool. 👍

      @@anangryranger that’s very inventive my friend! I would have a ball trying to build one! You’ve given a good baseline to attempt it! Maybe I could look around for a 50-110 WCF cartridge! I’m sure someone has one somewhere! Don’t want to completely copy your idea!

      A 16P nail was used. You can heat it with a propane torch. You can use a vicegrip pliers to hold the nail. Most bench vices have a flat part like mini anvil. Heat the head and fold it over into itself. Heat again to cherry red, and forge it to a rounded flat spoon shape. Quench in water, and file it to shape. Heat again and quench in oil (even old motor oil), and trim the spike end to suit the desired depth in the bullet to fit inside the case. I think you'll have fun with it. You're a clever guy and will no doubt build something cool!👍 I'll be tickled to see it in a future video. 😉

    Pipes are excellent for outdoors activities. Myself and all my fellow smokers took pipes into the backcountry. They are just so convenient and easy and for outdoors the ember is contained so less risk of accidental fire. Todays Quiz: How do pipe smokers keep their pipes lit outside in rain? St Andrew will reveal the prize to the winner.

      When i was working Utilities and it rained, if I was enjoying a straight pipe I would simply use the "Irish method" and smoke it upside down (Like the proverbial leprechaun) Of course that won't work as well as when I had my trusty Bulldog or a pipe with a strong bend, which meant I had to pay attention to the weather reports before leaving. LOL

    Now I don't smoke...never really wanted to, grew up around cig smokers all my life and it caused me no end of problems from second hand smoke no matter how hard they tried to not smoke around me and the cloying sickly smell of cig smoke hung in the air. My mom though, was rather fond of the smell of my great grandfather's pipe tobacco from what I remember her talking about him, and I myself am rather fond of a beard oil (which I use on my goatee) that smells of leather and pipe tobacco. I also collect unique pipes and tobacco related items like unique looking or antique lighters. There's actually a company that sells Lord of the Rings inspired flavors of pipe tobacco such as Old Toby...but it now falls under the "Fantasy South" label and the Old Toby blend goes by "Tombigbee" after a river in Tennessee. I've been tempted to buy a small bag of the stuff just to see what it smells like and MAYBE use it in my Gandalf the White inspired Churchwarden pipe to give it a broken in smell.
