This guy is awesome. Morning routine ice bath and coffee. He has life by the balls. Hats off to you sir!
I appreciate that!
Love the energy coming of your comment! Can’t wait to have my own icebath ❤
@@JordiMartin Life is too short not to enjoy! Which ice bath one are you wanting to get?
well, technically he does it every 4 days from what i gather.
His comment about moving to displace the film of water heated by your body is spot on--you miss out if you stay motionless. Also going naked or in a swim brief is way better for that reason--regular swimsuits/jammers retain a film of water close to the skin that your body heats up similar to a thin wetsuit.
Yep. Moving is the worst. And the best!!
This is exactly what I was looking for ! You don't know how much this helped me , Thanks a lot, going to buy a 1 hundred litre chest freezer now 😄
Glad I could help! Just be gentle when you drop the tubs in... the can crack, especially when you throw them in like a crazy person (from experience).
When you said so gd to be home brother I felt that bigtime!!! That feeling is amazing to to uncomfortable yet content 😌 thank you for your time
Absolutely!!
Thanks sooooo much for this!! I was literally minutes from buying an Ice machine but this is a MUCH better move! Really appreciate it! :)
You're welcome!! (I learned that the plastic do break and someone suggested metal containers to fix that problem)
this is pretty genius. I know some folks just freeze a few 24 packs of water bottles and reuse the waterbottles but i really like this idea.
I've tried the water bottles, but they are so unruly to handle lol. This is quick and easy for me!!
Thanks for this tip. My wife is just getting in the plunge and we didn't really want to dump a ton of money into a chiller, and only need it during the summer months. Found a freezer on sale for $160 and will be much easier than bags of ice all the time.
So awesome! Nice work!!
So calming your video brother ❤️
I really like your idea, as I'm, like you, struggling with the high prices of commercial ice here in Saudi Arabia. I'm going to buy that freezer.
Thank you my dear brother.
Best of luck!
I just moved to Florida as well and decided this was a better method as well instead of spending $1000 on a chiller. This works great so far! I use 8lb silicon forms for my ice blocks. They work pretty well.
You are an absolute UNIT as well, brother! Very symmetrical, too. Well done!
Glad it helped. Thank you!!!
Thanks for the vid. I've had mine for two weeks and love the plunge. However I sure was becoming concerned about the cost of buying ice daily. This is a great solution and will definitely save lots of money.
Glad I could help
That is awesome, great camera shots.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great method. I did this for about a year. My freezer is in my garage and ice barrel is in the backyard, so it was kind of a pain. Finally broke down and bought a Penguin chiller.
Dude! Me too!!! The Penguin Chiller is the best!!! www.penguinchillers.com/product/jason-grubb-fitness-chiller-bundle/
After a Wim Hof course I wanted to create an ice Bath but I have limited space living in a big city. I looked at industrial ice cube machines but that requires plumbing and has a large foot print and will yield a 10 kg tray only . Probably not enough. I thought of getting a person sized chest freezer but again that takes up too much space. So, I came across Jason’s video here, just as I’m a doing a same trial of freezing ice in tupperware containers, now just in my small regular freezer, and then add them my regular bathtub as an ice Bath. I hope it will work out as well as jason, in which case I’ll get a small chest freezer also. Seems the simplest and most efficient solution. Thank you for sharing Jasón.
Good luck! Where there's a will, there's a way!
Could you tell me what material works? When I use a bucket it freezes through the bucket abd destroys it… thanks!
Ice plunge daily is magnificent. I’ve used a similar hack with deep freezer and metal bowls which seem to freeze faster. I also use several stainless steel cups 16 oz in the fridge freezer for 12 hours. Works fantastically to get my cold pod to 49-53 F. Enjoy!
Great idea! I've heard of using metal containers before.
I really liked the video. Great job thanks for sharing you have gained yourself a new subscriber! :-) glad I came across your channel
Awesome! Thanks for the sub!
Hey Jason, congrats on your recent win in Wodapalooza! After I saw your last video “30 days with icebath” I actually started doing cold showers myself! Feel amazing each morning.
Quick question from one data nerd to another - I noticed you have moved to Apple Watch for your input. Are you using Athlytic then, and any thoughts vs whoop? 😊 cheers!
Yep! You've probably watched my video on the apple watch by now.
@@JasonGrubb Great idea, so just buy some plastic tubs, and put them in freezer. Is it just regular plastic tubs I buy ?
So crazy the difference between moving water and stagnate in an ice bath/plunge.
Love the honesty!!
Thanks!
This has been my new routine as well. I was looking for a way to get more ice cheaper and this is a pretty decent solution! Like you said it takes a bit longer than 24 hrs to freeze the blocks but then there us also the space it takes up in the freezer. So if you have an extra freezer or an upright freezer where you dont have to move a bunch of stuff every time you get in it, its an awesome hack! Unfortunately i dont have either of those so im stuck looking for a chiller or paying for ice. I do love the hack though it definitely saves on Cash!!! Thnx for the video 8)
An extra freezer is definitely the right way to do it. I do use a chiller now.
Checking on chillers and they are close to $800 and more. Maybe if your going to do it everyday might be worth. But like you did here, can get a freezer chest to make ice for a lot less. According to the information Hubermann talks about you need 11 min a week for the benefits. Every other day and a freezer seems to be the way to go.
If the freezer breaks not only is it cheaper, but can get another faster than when if the chiller breaks.
I do 3 minutes a day. Definitely like using the chiller now: www.penguinchillers.com/product/jason-grubb-fitness-chiller-bundle/
Great video! Did you get a new camera recently? Looks great!!
Thank you! No new camera... but I'm glad it looks good!!
Your a beast. Thanks for the video
Thanks for watching!
That’s a great routine you have there,I just bought a massive 2nd hand chest freezer from a local kebab shop for £150 lined it with a pool liner for simplicity and to cover the kebab holes in base😂set a timer for it to come on 1-2 hrs a day to keep it around 5degrees,cheep as chips 👍👍
Nice!!!
Good job 👏
This is a super professional video for some ice in an ice bath lol. Good job.
haha. Thanks
Really good tips. I m looking into buying an ice freezer.
Tbh I’m more focused on my legs only. What I do is take a shallow ice bath in my bath tub. That way I can sit there for 30-1hr and just freeze my legs and feet. Then I switch and lay back with legs up to do my upper body.
For me 3 min isn’t long enough.
Try that sometime if you just wanna freeze your legs longer. The inflammation is so bad at my age over 35 after a 2-3hr walk hike or sk8 sesh.
Check my patented fitness gear. It’s an an epic improvement to a foam roller adding a side wheel. The grips on wheels plus new angles are great for fitness and recovery.
That’s cool - it’s different than cold plunging - just to be clear.
Ah, good idea! Any suggestions for the best affordable (under $100) insulated cold tub/barrel with a cover?
I personally used an old pool
Yeah. Not many options under $100 that I know of. I mean - cold water in your bathtub with ice maybe.
This is awhile later after this question was asked but if anyone sees this, I bought a Rubbermaid 100 gallon plastic tank, a cheap cover on Amazon $30, and a freezer chest on OfferUp for $100. It works well for me.
this is a brilliant setup! do you re-use the water for the ice?
I do!
Many thanks for a great and informative clip. Once you have dropped the ice into the tub, appx how long does it for the water to get the ready-to-plunge desired temperature? And what appx is the water temperature by then?
I would generally put the ice in and then go start my coffee, put in my contacts, etc. So about 10 minutes. Water temp really depends what the ambient temp is, but it got it below 50degress for me.
Turns out you get the best from the initial plunge, as your body kicks into survival mode and your breathing deepens as a result.
So probably chucking in the ice, going for a 15 - to - 30-minute jog, then hoping in as quickly as you can.
To shock your system
Edit: I recently found out that while a shock to your system is still important, to get the best results from your runs is to have them After an ice bath vs. Before.
Yep - isn't that crazy. No more ice baths post workout... we always want to plunge first thing - before any exercise.
I’m taking plastic tubs did you put in the sink to wash dishes in. Fill one or two of those with water put in your refrigerator, if you have a room. In the morning, it’ll be just above freezing, depending on how cold are refrigerators. Mine is just about the freezing level.
Sure - that could work... But you'd need a LOT of water for the size of the Ice Barrel
Great ideas. Thank you
Glad you like them!
Wandering what temperature your freezer gets to? Any freezer/Chiller can make the ice or not you think?
Thanks for sharing your method. I was planning on buying a 100 gallon stock tank and 14 cubic foot chest freezer and doing pretty much the same thing. Was planning on getting some industrial strength zip locs and filling them with water to make the ice packs. I wasn't sure if that would be enough. Have you measured your water temp by any chance?
Water temp really depends on the season and location of your tank. If it’s hot out, it’s hard for the ice to get the tank cold enough. If you insulate the tank and keep it in a cooler place, ice works wonders.
@JasonGrubb interesting. Thanks for the advice. I'm in Florida as well so might be a challenge haha
I’d go with a penguin chiller in FL
Https://www.penguinchillers.com/product/jason-grubb-fitness-chiller-bundle/
Amazing!!! BUT I have a question. How do you do so the ice does not stick to the plastic containers??
I put the ice still in the containers into the barrel. When it had thawed a little, I was able to get the ice out.
@@JasonGrubb Amazing! Thank you
Does the barrell have a tap to release the water after you are done. Or you just have to tip it over?
It has a tap to release the water.
I use a chest freezer as well. Started using Waterbrick containers made for water storage. Each one holds about 3 gallons and don't need to refill every time. Also shouldn't crack like the cheap Walmart containers. Saving my money for the penguin chiller.
Penguin chiller is definitely worth it! So easy and makes damn cold water, too!! When you're in the market for your cooler, you can use my link to help support the channel www.penguinchillers.com/product/jason-grubb-fitness-chiller-bundle/
How many water bricks do you use? I am looking into getting some for a chest freezer.
@@toribiddle1058 I would think you would only need 2 of them that would be around 40-50lbs of ice. a 2 pack is $37
I bought 2 of them (4) I will report back. Goald would be leave two in while two freeze in my freezer chest.
Where did you find the water bricks? How is it working?
Hey Jason! Where can I find those tubs that your freeze the ice in? Looking on Amazon and can’t seem to find anything that size. Thanks man!
Hey! I got them at Walmart.
I definitely prefer an ice bath over a cold shower any day. Just curious what temp are you able to get your ice barrel to with all that ice?
With just ice. Depending on the ambient temp - I can get it into the 50s
@@JasonGrubb Thanks, I was just curious. I live in Washington and have been testing out The Ice Pod. I've been getting creative with my ice making! 🤗
Looks awesome. I have been trying water bottles but that method sucks, and I can't be buying 40lbs of ice a day either. What kind of containers are those? And how long does it take before the ice will come out of the container?
These are cheap ones from Walmart, but they can break on ya. Just had a comment recommending Waterbrick containers - worth a look. The ice comes out in a couple minutes, tops.
Hey Jason, what plastic containers do you use to freeze the ice in. Size and brand? I tried this is a couple small plastic buckets and they cracked on my after a couple uses.
I just use ones from Walmart... Rubbermade I think. I have cracked some, just gotta be careful when you drop them into the ice bath.
How long does it take the containers to freeze in the ice chest you have? And do you put the lid on or take it off the containers?
omg tks!
I'm using a old deep freezer, have a welder build a say 25 gallon tank and place it in their, drill a hole through the side and use a portable hot tub pump to circulate. Build a wood box now with ventilation to cover the ugly freezer , run that through your mind draw it out on paper , good luck.
Nice!!
Where did you get the containers with lids from? Link?
I just got those ones from Walmart. Not the best quality, but cheap.
Hello Jason,
Where did you bought those boxes ?
Walmart
HI JASON, WHERE DID YOU GET THOSE ICE MOLD CONTAINERS AND DO THEY LAST LONG OR CRACK?
They will crack... depends on how gentle with them you are. I've heard people use metal chafing/steam pans and there are some silicon ones on amazon (I also think Ice Barrel has some out/coming out)
@@JasonGrubb OH OK YEA I SAW THOSE ON THE ICE BARREL SITE BUT 36 BUKS EACH..AMAZON SELLS THE SAME ONE FOR 35 BUKS..I GUESS ILL SPLURGE ON THEM
What temperature does the ice get the water to? Thanks
It totally depends on your ambient temp, etc...but I was getting low 50's.
Just recycle your water bottles and use them as ice packs. It works really well too and is less expansive !!
Hey Jason , big help 🙏🏽🙏🏽 what freezer did you end up getting??
Just a cheap one from target (about $200). You can get a freezer like this anywhere (walmart, target, home depot)
Hey what’s up I hadn’t noticed you live in an RV is it full-time and if so, is it cheaper than owning a home?
It really depends on someone's specific situation. With our rig + truck + RV spots (we generally stay at places with full hookups and some amenities) it's about a wash for us.
If you have the time, try and stay for 10-15 minutes. Thanks for the ice-chest tip, I have just been using 4-5 7 lbs blocks. How do you maintain the water? I have to drain it every-other day.
I use spa treatment in mine. Before I got a chiller moving the water, I would empty it every couple weeks.
@@JasonGrubb thanks, I have been using a fish tank filter and food grade h-peroxide, which thus far, has worked well here in FL. I don’t use the tub after the gym tho, only in the AM before I sweat.
That's a cool solution. I'd probably take the ice bricks and lay the smack down on em using a pillowcase and a hammer. Increase the surface area and efficiency of the temperature transfer to the water.
That’s a great idea!!!
Any excuse to lay the smack down on inanimate object. They don't move ... they need to pay for that!!!@@JasonGrubb
Hey man if you reused the water from the icebath instead of the hose water, you'll use less energy and maybe even get all of your buckets to freeze within the 24 hours! It's what I do and works a treat!
Great idea!
I want to use a cold tub but I never done it before how much ice should I put in a bath tub? How long should I start with?
Start with what you can handle... start with cold water in a tub for a couple minutes... eventually add 10, then 20, then 30, then 40 pounds of ice!!
hey man how cold do you get the water with this technique? Love the content!
About 45-60 degrees - depending on the ambient outside temp.
buying one!!!
Get it!! icebarrel.com/jasongrubb
What ice chest size do you recommend
Small is totally fine... like 5-7 cu. ft.
What brand of ice chest do you have? Do you prefer the tub versus getting a tank for the ice bath
IT's 5.0 cu ft - the product is linked/tagged in the video. I prefer the barrel as I can drop right into it.
What temp do u do the ice bath at. I have been doing for a week now at 60 deg F/ 15 deg C. But have started finding it is not cold enough anymore.
I like 46ish degrees.
How big is your chest freezer? As in Litres? Great idea by the way
It's like a 6 gallon freezer.
How often do you clean the barrel out
Depends on the temp outside... but with my cleaner, a few weeks to a month or so.
Empty all the ice out each time and then use warm/hot water in each container and they will actually freeze faster btw!!
Really?!
JOSH+ LIAR
I appreciate the video. One question: If you are going to have to fill it with ice every day, what is the advantage of using a barrel? Couldn't you accomplish the same thing (and save the cost of the barrel) by simply filling up a bathtub with ice?
You totally could... That's lots of water every day, but that would work. I like the barrel because I can very easily dunk in it... it's not gradual in any way! LOL.
@@JasonGrubb Thanks for the response!
Hi Jason. This is Scott from Geaux CrossFit. You ever get the penguin chiller functioning well?
Hey Scott!! Yes! Just got it out of the sun and replaced the filter so that I had much better flow. 50 degrees in it this morning!!!
@@JasonGrubb Great!
@@JasonGrubb I'm about to order the Penguin chiller system for the Ice Barrel. Did they happen to give you a referral code/coupon code?
I’d def reuse that water to make the ice blocks.
That would work
How do you properly dispose of water when you’re finished if it’s winter and the water will inevitably freeze? Can it damage your yard or soil or anything? I’m not an expert.
Good question... I'm trying to stay out of freezing outdoor temps! But I often connect a hose to the bottom to drain the water where I want to.
Great idea. With those 5 containers, do you know the temp you can get the water down to?
I think i was getting it into the mid 50s
You can buy ice packs. The ones that can also be heated up or frozen.
Grat idea!
How often did you change the water in the barrel? I’ve been wanting to buy one but baby get my head around wasting so much water.😢
Hey there. I change mine every 2-3 weeks, which I don't think is too obscene.
@@JasonGrubb thanks for your reply… does it go murky or smelly at all? What prompts you to feel like you need to change the water?
@@Paula-zl3zn Not murky at all... while it's cold. If it's warm water - you can see a haze in the water. But if it's cold, good to go for weeks. Before I had the chiller... I would add a little spa treatment to help keep the water happy.
- Plunging in ice water ✅
- Putting phone away for a few seconds 🙅🏻♂️ absolutely not 😂
Ha ha. I save some of my favorite things for when I plunge. It’s actually a descent way to step into hard things/habits. Another example would be to save your favorite podcast for when you do interval sprints or a hard part of your training session.
do you have a link for the ice chest? not seeing it in the desc
I just got a small one at Target.
What is the brand of containers you use to make the ice?
Just cheap Tupperware from Walmart.
Grubb making the most helpful CrossFit content on the internet. 👏👏👏
My dude!
How cold does it actually get though? My thought process is going to be, toss is a few 10lbs molds worth of ice the night prior. Which will lead to about 7 hrs in the tub. You think that would suffice?
You’ll probably need more. Depending on the ambient temp. If it’s 60° out… That might work. If it’s 80° out, you’re gonna have to use about 50 pounds of ice. I eventually ended up purchasing this chiller. Https://www.penguinchillers.com/product/jason-grubb-fitness-chiller-bundle/
It’s funny how getting in the ice is never easy no matter how often I do it. I never ‘want’ to get in, but Om always glad I did.
💯
Do you recommend ice bath in morning or after training?
Morning!
Does this freezer hold up outside?
It did for me, but it wasn't in snowy/cold weather.
What about frozen gallon water jugs?
Totally! I just liked the tubs myself.
How long do you leave the blocks of ice in the water before the water temperature gets down to the desired level?
I would put mine in and then go make coffee and put my contacts in... that was usually long enough lol
Haha, gotcha 😀
How many degrees do you get down to like this normally?
Man... It's been a while since I've done this method (I have a chiller now), but I think it was around mid 50s. That was in the southern US in about 70 degree weather.
Does anyone know who makes the ice chest appliance?
I bought it for under $200 at Target.
Can you link your freezer? Do you know how big it is? 3.5 cubic meters?
IT's 5.0 cu ft - the product is linked/tagged in the video
Try not putting ur contacts in. Get some of those healthy UV rays ☀️. Contacts and glasses block them. Just a suggestion.
Ahhhh dang. I’m literally blind without em. Shoot.
How hard is it to keep that barrel clean?
So easy... I empty it about every 3-4 weeks... give it a rinse and fill it back up.
My body feels like it's over heating after I get out of the ice plunge and like I get kind of tired and drained of energy.. Do you know why this is?
Wild... You're just in there for 3 minutes?
@@JasonGrubb nooo. Maybe that's the problem. Like 8 minutes, but I'm in Florida and thought the water probably wasn't even that cold.. But maybe it is 😅 I'm going to buy a thermometer , see what's up to
I use 2 liter bottles of water, which I freeze in my garage freezer. I put 12 of them in each evening before bed. Works well in my IcePod 2.0. This isn’t rocket science. 😀❤️
how long do you let the bottles sit in the bath water before you go in?
can you link the plastic tubs you use please.
Actually... the best tubs on the market are sold by Ice Barrel now (they don't break, they'll last forever). icebarrel.com/jasongrubb
How many cubic ft is that chest freezer? 3.5 or 5? Seeing the minimum amount I can get away with
IT's 5.0 cu ft - the product is linked/tagged in the video
whats your system now ?
I do ice baths twice a week. Sauna for 15 minutes. Cold for 3. Sauna for 12. Cold for 3. The warm water around you and moving is so true. Haha.
Nice
Hey Jason, have you thought about using an cold water chiller ie penguin for ice barrel?
It's a fantastic solution... but definitely pricier!
I've been trying ice and it's not really working at all. My water out of the tap is 52f to 54f. I'd like to get it down to 45f. The ice I've been throwing 4 ice packs and 2 large frozen jugs in and it doesn't change it at all. Kind of a bummer. In this video you said the water was 70f before ice. What is the water temp after the ice goes in?
Hey there... I was able to get it sub 60, but not much colder than that... using about 6-8 of those bins of ice. I'd say you need a lot more ice.
isnt between 50 and 60 plenty cold
Nice so just 50 lbs of ice and about 20-30 mins to cool? Curious your height and weight I'm 6'4" and 260lbs mostly muscle.
I'm 5'8" 190lbs so a little more compact lol.
Can you use the already cold water out of the barrel to fill the containers then fill the barrel with the tap as the barrel water is going to warm up regardless in 24hr
Not a bad idea!
Where did you get the containers?
I got some from Walmart.... but another commenter said there are containers meant for this!
Double the containers then you’ll have two days for it to freeze before using
Didn't have room in this freezer to do that, but it's a great idea if you have the space!
How often do you need to change the water?
About every 3-4 weeks.
@@JasonGrubb Thanks bro.
Also use ice-cream buckets, hoped you'd have a better option, haha. What a mission huh.
Ice-cream buckets would work!
