TLDL: buy a freezer you fit in, dont skimp due to price. get one wo metal on the inside (only plastic). fill the drain hole with sealant to make sure no leaks. fish pump + ozone to sanitze (absolute must) maybe get 2 ozone pumps one on each side. make sure you have a cleaning process streamlined with a strong pump. otherwise your cleaning takes too long at 6 min time stamp. Nail your timer so the temp is the same all the time.
Thank you for this cause this dude takes ageeeeesss to get to the point
TY!
completely unnecessary to have two ozone pumps & block your drain hole off.
Don't listen to this guy in the video he's still making a bunch of dumb mistakes.
You are my hero! Thank you for the very clear video. This is valuable for people (in The Netherlands in 2023) who are building their cold plunge. ๐๐๐
I bought a $25 pump that hooks to your drill and a hose, I run the hose from my cold tank to the end of my back yard or the edge of the road (guess it depends where you live etc) but I syphon out the water that way whenever I want and itโs a piece of cake.
you could set up a pid temperature controller to turn it off and on instead of using a timer. With pid temperature controller you would set the temperature you want it to turn on at and temperature you would want it to shut off at and it would keep it in that range always
Like an inkbird?
Inkbird would work perfectly
Pay $15 for an Elitech STC-1000. Easy to fit, and worked perfectly now for over 2 years. I set my freezer to switch on at 4 degrees and switch off at 5 degrees. I have a small pool, so I just use the chlorinated pool water, and change it out every month, so no need for a filtration system. Again, zero hassle. I donโt know why anyone would purposefully block the drain plug? Just wrap the outside plug in PTFE plumbers tape, and its completely watertight, but can still be easily removed for draining.
Thanks for the wisdomโ@@tz7813
Looked high and low for a foot locker style trunk to store my daughter's dress up clothes. czcams.com/users/postUgkxRkkpE1_3gMEZ2mPhAt6b2moNCUXyH8tG I had one growing up that I stored my Barbies in and wanted something sturdy like that for her costumes. This arrived really, really quickly and is exactly what I've been looking for. Perfect size, color (pink) and has stood up for nearly a year so far against my kids using it as a chair, stage, and barricade (๐ฌ) to keep each other out of their rooms. I'm probably going to order another one for my daughter's Barbies.
Thank you for this video, so helpful.
Thank you for posting this. I'm looking to build my own and this is helpful. Liked and subscribed. Be well brother
Thanks man!
Great video man. Thank you.
You are welcome!
appreciate the video brother!
Put a filter on your freezer temperature controller and ozone machine, saves changing the water. I put everything through the lid and it works great. The other thing is use good sealant and l used a water proof 2 pack paint on top of sealant and l have no leaks. Have fun with your cold plunging.
Glad I come across this video so informative and very well explained thank you
You're welcome!
Real fact speacking right there ! My first one was a mes i build a other one bether freezer and did all jb weld epoxy seam sealling then paint it line x xs305 then change the filtration system i think my next issues will figured out the right system to use for sanytizing and filtration
Super helpful! Thank you for this. Iโm at the beginning of my journey in cold plunges for the health benefits and Iโve been looking at a long term solution as the $100 bath kits seem like cheap but unreliable option since you have to source ice. My main thing is that Iโll have the ability to consistently do it. So this was greatly helpful.
You are right. The ice method is unworkable in my opinion.
Thank you brother!
For the inside consider the roll on tub refinishing kit available from rustoleum its a 2 part epoxy paint i used it in a water trough tub build and had good results getting a very tough solid finish
Is that the black tub paint? I was looking at that. Wished it came in other Colorโs
@@traingamegain2434 they had white and almond when I did my tub
Does it affect the cooling/freezing time of the freezer ?
Good idea. I used epoxy pond liner, 2 coats. Probably very similar.

Great video mate. Considering building my own and this was super helpful

I hope you found the inkbird temperature sensor now and aren't still guessing with a timer. It's a huge difference!

Installing the pump and Ozone....can you post a video on your set up?
so many videos already lol ๐
I have a great sauna already built in a house I have brought , with a shower just outside the door , in this house the natural water out of the tap is pretty cold ,
Iโm just weighing up how much work / advantages there would be making my own cold plunge as opposed to just having cold showers .
I don't think they compare. In a plunge you're really surrounded with cold. I keep mine at 39F, but my cold tap water is only 60F. Plus a cold shower just feels horrible while not being as effective. Your experience may vary.
Great video brother and appreciate all the links! Which ozone generator do you recommend? You link to the supplier site but not specific model. thank you!
no problem, and the aqua 6 is the one you want
Thanks for tips. ANy quick list of equipment ( freezers, pumps, O3 filters, etc..) new to it and like my cold pod i have to fill with ice however in summer its not ideal
Marineland Magnum filter, Aqua 6 ozonator, Inkbird controller, any freezer. Transfer pump and garden hose for emptying.
So I bought the sealant you have linked but how do I apply it? Itโs not like normal silicone sealant?
I would love to see a video comparing high end company made cold plunges for sure!
will definitely do that video soon!
They're WAY overpriced.
Hi Kyle, great video. What do you think about adding hydrogen peroxide as well to assist with keeping the water cleaner longer?
not sure, could be good! give a test, lmk how it goes!
Appreciate the video.... I'm going for the 19.8 cubic.. being 6'3....
you're welcome!
How do you like the 19.8 cubic? Looking for the same being the same size as you!
@@aaronsouthward I still haven't bought it... I was going a different route with a 300 gallon water tote... still might get the chest though..
Thank you
You can also add some epsom salt to lower the freezing point of water.
Nice
Hi there, great video. just about to set my freezer up. I'm in australia and i cant find a ozone generator. What do you mean by this?
Look online. Water purifier ozonator.
Have you found the temperature stick on the inkbird to be water proof, if not what do you use/do to make it last?
It seems to keep working fine on mine.
I got the ozone, water pump, sealant, and timer and I understand that I'll be using the timer to turn on and off the actual freezer, but do you also have a separate timer for the ozone and water pump or how do you turn those on in the night automatically? Thanks
Good question. Get an Inkbird temp controller instead of a timer. You can set the desired temp directly with that. Get an ozonater that is programmable itself.
Set up your electrical cords so that the ozonater always stays on to maintain the program (no wires go to the tub, only ozone). The Inkbird supplies power to the freezer when it needs to. Set up the aquarium pump to stay on, except when you pull the plug to the Inkbird before getting in, when your plug setup will cut the power to the aquarium pump also - thus no electric to the plunge before getting in. Use a separate battery alarm timer nearby to tell you when you want to get out.
Do you find that your ozone generator does what you need it to do? The website recommends a more expensive model. Trying to determine if itโs legit or just up-selling.
Thanks for these videos, they've been super helpful! I bought the Frigidaire chest secondhand and it seems to heat up a lot when cooling, have you had this issue at all? I know they're support to heat up as they absorb the heat from the inside but mine seems to get almost too hot to touch!
Just made mine yesterday and woke up this morning and was hot to touch also. Is it safe to keep going you think?
I had the same issue !!! I just bought an auto off thermostat hoping that will auto govern the on off and hopefully itโll cool down ๐ฎ
Update, once it gets to temp it cools right down. It just gets really hot if you cool it from room temp. I dropped a couple of bags of ice in to speed up the process and this worked really well
No worries. After it gets cold that will be over.
Kyle, I'm looking to purchase my freezer chest. Is the alternative to the metal inside a plastic insert? I'm trying to understand what to look for so there is less sealant necessary. Thank you for your video.
No I think some freezers just have different wall material. Some have painted steel some are plastic and some have dimpled shiny aluminum. I think it's a good bet that you should probably seal all the seems regardless. I would think that the aluminum ones would be nice but I don't know
@@JonBorpa Mine is the aluminum. Sealed everything with Water Weld, then 2 coats of epoxy pond liner.
Just curious, wouldn't it be better to use the drain system of the freezer to change the water? Why sealing it? Would it leak otherwise?
Yes, it would probably leak, because you have a couple of feet of water weight pressing down on it. It's only built for nuisance water that may get into a food freezer, not for taking pressure.
These are good tips, except that I don't think you have good reasons for saying that the temp doesn't matter.
I have a metal lined freezer. First I sealed the joints and the drain plug with Water Weld. Then I lined the inside with 2 coats of epoxy pond liner. I keep the temp at 39F with an Inkbird controller, and there is no ice in the water. I use the plunge first thing after getting out of bed, twice a week, for 5 1/2 minutes. The aquarium pump and ozonater work fine and keep the water clean. If I want to change the water once in a while, I use a portable electric transfer pump from Harbor Freight and garden hose to suck all the water out and down my driveway, then wipe the plunge and refill.
You are right - if you're going to do cold therapy, you need to have things set up to do it quickly and easily.
PS Have all your electrical cords/power, etc. in a nice condensed setup so you can disconnect the freezer, aquarium pump and thermostat by pulling out just one electrical plug before you get in each time. Pull the plug, see the Inkbird go dark, set a separate timer alarm, and get in. Be safe.
Thanks for the video. So I just went to your links and had the pump in my basket on Amazon while I was getting the other items and the last one sold and now months before more come. Can you suggest another pump? thanks
Look at pet supply stores.
3:17 Great vid. Donโt go head under the water that makes your body try hard to warm up which shortens the positives of the cold plunge.
going under is fine, plenty of cold exposure followers do it.
Yeah it makes it easier
Head under at the end for the win
Hey thanks for the great info, i was wondering your thoughts on just adding chlorine and or salt to prevent bacteria, instead of spending time/money on pump, ozone etc. I was going to just use like a fish tank cleaner that can suck up the dirt but leave the majority of the water. I was going to use the test strips that i would use for my pool to ensure right levels of chloride. Let me know what you think! thanks!
Id never want to do chlorine. I use salt in mine but I also have the pump.
chlorine is very bad for you and absorbed by your pores
Greetings and thank you for the awesome content. Quick question...My 14.8 chest freezer is arriving with coasters/wheels. Will they be okay with the added weight? Thanks!
hard to say, a full plunge with water is around 700 pounds, so maybe not. hope it helps
I made a platform for mine so that the weight was distributed equally. I cut out space in the platform so that I could keep the wheels on but also that the weight was off of the wheels. I would not be distributing the weight of the cold plunge on the wheels. It's dangerous and you could damage the freezer unit.
how did the wheels go, i did some quick density load calcs for 14.8 cubic feet of water/human body you will have up to 900 pounds inside the freezer, plus 100-200 pounds for the freezer. i would want the wheels to be rated for 300 pounds per minimum. and realistically 500 pounds per wheel rating to accept shifting weight as you get in and out.
@@BrazBlue The strength of the wheels isn't the problem. The weight could be too much for the freezer bottom unless the entire bottom is supported.
Did you find a big difference between the JB Weld sealant and Food Grade Silicone? Iโm replacing a 6yr old freezer that I sealed with silicon and had zero issues.. is it worth the extra effort to use the JB Weld? Iโve seen recommendations for 25-30 tubes at $5 each.. itโs a pretty big expense.. Iโm not seeing a downside to silicone, am I missing something?
Also- a huge thank you for the videos and taking the time to educate on ice baths.. ๐
silicone is less toxic
get 291 sika
iโm curious too
That must be a typo. I only used 2 tubes of the water weld.
So is your vid about making diy plunge from beyond you realized all this stuff?
Do you think it would make a difference if I were to get a freezer that allows for setting the temperature? I'm guessing not, since I'd be relying on the timer to get the temp right.
probably not, let me know how it goes
No, use an Inkbird controller to set the temp.
Which OZone Generator do you recommend because there are 2 on that link and I don't know anything about them?
the pro is more powerful, so I would go with that one. will keep things clean for longer
Love the diy vids for the ice bath. Due to space I don't know if i can fit a 14.1 cu ft freezer. In your opinion could you fit in a 7 cu ft semi comfortably ?
you could fit, but it'd be tight, I'd say go a little bit bigger if you can
Trying to figure out the same. Goal isn't to be comfortable. Lol. Nor is the time spent long. I'd say 10-12cu ft is necessary unless you're a very small person.
@@BeGrizzlyStrong so I settled with a 14 cu ft freezer. I probably could fit into a smaller model but the issue is the material they use. It's aluminum panels that can shift during cold temperatures and let water through even if it is sealed. 14+ have the white painted interior which adds an extra layer. Just what I have found researching.
@@BeGrizzlyStrong the issue with smaller freezers is the aluminum panels can shift with the water weight and temperature. The 14 cu ft and above usually painted white has material that seems to be better suited. I just finished a modification of my own with this size and it has been working great!
@@aaronlevy6783 you answered me twice! Lol. Appreciate the insight on material.
Can you explain more on how to set up the ozone pump? I have a freezer and have to scrub it weekly ๐ฎ
Aqua 6. Set to run 10 min. every 4 hours.
I had a pond for two adult read ear sliders, makes me laugh when people complain about keeping their ColdPlunges clean, so easy, not dealing with waste.
So waterweld not silicone right?
Hey man, what size of freezer would you recomend if I am 5 foot 4? Im cool with curling into a ball a bit
maybe like 9 cu ft
Thanks my friend!!!!
@@migest4451 you're welcome!
5k sounds like a deal. Ordering Cold Plunge now
Hello.. wonder if you can help.. I'm from Israel and I can only find here a metal interior chest freezer... Is there a way to cover the metal? or is it still OK to use if it's metal?
what can you suggest with this type of situation? Thank you so much!
Iโve seen people paint it with pond armor
Water weld seams then Pond Armor the interior.
Do I go for freezer or buy chiller and barrel? Thoughts? Freezer seems cheaper and better option
It is.
For some reason , the frigidaire model you recommend is out of stock everywhere I look. It's difficult to find anything with similar specs.
Turns out the factory was temporarily closed due to COVID-19.
You inspired me
How long we have to run
1. ozone generator
2. filter pump (some produce air bubbles, doesn't kills bacteria?)
My ozonator is set to run for 10 minutes every 4 hours. Seems to be enough to keep it clean. The aquarium filter helps but is probably not enough to keep it clean.
Hey man Iโm about to build a cold water immersion that is very similar to this. Saw your video and Iโm curious about rust. Have you had any? Any tips to keep it from happening?
Also, love the video. Super easy setup!
The link to your latest freezer recommendation is dead. Can you drop the name and model number here?
Yo! Thanks for making all these videos on cold therapy -- I'm looking to get my own and finding that ALL 14.1 - 15.0 chest freezers with plastic interior (Frigidaire & Whirlpool) are sold out everywhere.. (at least within 300 mi radius of LA, where I'm based) Do you have any recommendations for alternatives with this being the case?
Craigslist, fb marketplace, OfferUp
Hey , so the chest freezer that Iโm eyeing right now has a built in temperature control , is that a good or bad thing ?
Just put it on medium setting. That would be colder than a cold plunge, but it's the Inkbird that will turn it off at your temp setting.
If you had to do it all over, would you build your own using something other than a freezer?? Also, if you do paint the inside of the freezer what did you paint it with??
Ugh noooooo. Freezer seems the best if your not outside in ice water
Epoxy pond liner.
I found a 20cu freezer used for $500 itโs 6 feet long, Iโm a tall guy. What should I look out for before buying it used
makes sure it's plastic, or painted on the inside
Whats the point in the ozone machine? I took your advice and got everything you suggested. I even spent 1400$ on a Frigidaire 25 cu ft chest freezer(all i could find around me) and it seems to me the ozone machine creates a green layer. It collects on the sides and i can wipe it off with a paper towel(kinda). Only thing i can think of thats causing it. I put about 10lbs of salt in mine so it cant be algae. This didn't appear till after i put ozone machine in water. I had it set to run 5 mins every 4 hrs. Never noticed anything green on the sides. Then set it to 30 mins every 4 hrs and next day it was green all on the sides. So what's the point in the ozone machine?
Are you running the aquarium pump constantly? What temp is the water? Start over and leave out the salt - it may have contained some contaminant.
Do I need to do anything to the bottom to make it lay more flat. Did you takeoff the legs?
I would take off the legs. The water weighs a lot, so all of the bottom should be fully supported.
I was about to pull the trigger on a 14 cubic ft.....will that be big enough
Could you a temperature controller to just turn the freezer on and off?
Yup. Inkbird.
How has the inside of your chest freezer held up over time? Any rust?
that was for the first beta buyers
Iโve watched all your videos. I canโt remember did you seal the drain hole?
yes
Honestly, at this point it just sounds like it would be easier to purchase one of the cold plunge tubs that had everything available for you for a few thousand dollars
Can you have it all setup outside if the electrical stuff is made for it?
Yes. Mine is outside with a patio roof over it. Just protect the electrical stuff.
In your other videos, you show your tub using the Aqua-6 Ozone Generator. However, when you go on their website, it specifically says this ozone generator is not suitable for cold plunge tubs and to use the MP-3000 Ozone Generator. Do you have to buy the $4000 ozone generator vs the $90 one?
Yes the $4000 is the go too that's what we all are using. Ask mum for a loan lad. Thank me later
Ozone is expensive and doesnt remain in solution long. Hypochlorite (bleach) can achieve the same goals with a smaller budget. (Think pools and your municipal water). To achieve a higher level you can also look in to UV lamps. Also, both Ozone and bleach can be inhalation hazards as well as highly corrosive. Proper levels of bleach disinfect longer than ozone.
HA !
Hey man love the videos on cold plunges. Am putting mine together now.. so you have the ozonator & pump - are these on timers too? And what about a water polisher, I've seen some people include one in their set-up, is that not necessary if you have the ozonator & pump? Thanks
up to you, i never had one
โ@@wellnessdaddy Cool mate, and thanks for the reply! So is it just the freezer that's on the timer and the pump & ozonatorrun 24/7?
@@timmillard7432 Freezer on Inkbird, ononator is programmed, pump/polisher 24/7 , like Inkbird, except when you're in there.
Why not use the Drain hole.to set up a Filter pump with return hole on the opposite side?
Then you can eliminate Ozone nonsense.
Anyways how does Ozone minimize dirt and skin from making water contaminated?
Even with the Ozone Generator, how often does it need emptying? Also does Chlorine help?
stay away from chlorine, ozone will kill all germs, so will h202 food grade. no bad bacteria or viruses can survive in an oxygenated environment, if you shower and are clean before getting in maybe dump once every month or two if doing daily use.
A few weeks? Don't use chlorine.
This may sound like a dumb question but, do I need a chiller as well?
No, the freezer does that.
Where is the video where you show how to hook up the pump and temp control?
I put one in, is it normal for the back to get to 130 degrees. Its a frigidaire
Yes, it will be hot until it gets the water cold.
is the freezer linked? I don't see it.
Thoughts on Ozone generators not being allowed in California?
Buy it outside of your state. Nobodyโs going to knock down your door to confiscate your ozone generator
GREAT VIDEO THANKS! QUESTION: 40? 45? What about 52? You say there's no competition for HOW COLD and I agree. I just want to go as cold as it takes to get the benefits and NO MORE. I have heard 52 and even 54, but you're talking about the 40's. That sounds HARD. I have done 52 and it was very bearable. It also made me feel amazing all day. SO I def wanna do this but with MAXIMUM benefits..
There aren't alot of studies on it past 48 degrees
Wim Hof recommends as cold as you can bear once you get to 15min lengths
Some amazing knowledge dropped! Thank you for putting the time, research, and experience into this video!
Thanks man!
@@wellnessdaddy is there a great value priced cold plunge/tub?
Why would you consider blocking up the drainage hole??? That's what it's for...drainage. And your telling me you never change your water..ever? Ozone filter is not enough. Terrible advice!! And your hands are freaking me out dude..
Hey Kyle, this information was great! Is it normal for chest freezers sides and back to get really hot? Does this have something to do with sealing the interior?
yeah mine used to get really hot as well, i think it's normal
Any freezer/fridge produces more heat than it can produce in cold. Watch any log ph diagram
Normal till the water gets cold.
Hey Bro, doesnt the freezer get broken after so much "turn off" - "turn on" swiching?
no
Water is more temp stable than air in a freezer. The freezer turns on and off less with the Inkbird cycling a cold plunge than it would being used to freeze food.
So if its not about how cold the water is but just that its cold, wouldn't a cold shower suffice as well?
depending on where you live it could work, but i just love the full body immersion experience of a cold plunge
Anything that creates the adrenaline response is what youโre aiming for. A cold shower is more than sufficient, yes. Do not stand still in the shower; keep your body moving. It keeps you colder that way, which is what you want.
But it does matter what temp. And a shower doesn't cover your body like immersion does.
You mention that a plastic interior is better than metal. Pretty much all of the freezers I have seen are silver inside. But someone said that most look silver but are actually plastic. Is this the case?
It definitely could be, I do not know for sure unless I saw it
Probably aluminum like mine.
Is that safe?
Does your deep plunge get fine silt or sediment at the bottom? I have the ozone and air pump and run it daily however I canโt determine where the sediment of coming from. I can send a picture, let me know where to send it.
Ozone (O3) can take naturally occuring sulfides out of suspension through oxidation and leave them as sediment deposits. Unless you used deionized water for your plunge, which in that case idk what you have.
Run an aquarium filter to circulate and trap that stuff.
Pardon my lack of understanding. If the water is super cold why would We be worried about harmful things growing in it? Especially if we're getting in and out of it clean each time? And why wouldn't we want to maybe seal around the drain but then close it with a cap so we can still have the drain and just replace the water every couple weeks? Seems that, with the temperature control would be all you would need. ๐ค
Algae will still grow. Ask anyone who lives in Washington state. The drain will tend to leak because of the water weight. Easier to just use a pump to empty the tub versus chasing annoying leaks.
Why deal the plug?
Why do you need to circulate the water? Wouldn't you go in after taking a shower, empty the freezer once a week, clean it, and repeat?
Once a week is a hassle. Let the machines keep it clean.
@@john99776 how?
@@virgnthermostat5928 see my other comments for details.
Why seal the drain? Donโt you need to change the water sometimes?
No just keep the same water till it's sewage brown then add curry and tumeric an garlic. It kills any bacteria ๐ฆ ๐งซ
That amount of water will leak out of the drain.

Nice - so how often do you use the ozonizer, for how long? and is it flammable?
it just runs on a self timer... not sure if it's flammable lol
no, not flammable
Apparently the Ozone generator doesn't work for more then a glass of water from what I've been told. This is not a good purchase to clean the water. There is a JED 203. I accidentally purchased it and it will die very quickly. How long did you use your ozone generator before it died?
mine never died
Good to know. I have one. I run it on setting 18. 20min every 4 hour. There is a better model the jed230. But figured I would ask as others were concerned this one would not last or provide enough ozone to kill germs.
@@wellnessdaddy Glad to know that, I have spoke with some others that have done these deep freezers and from what I understand this Device does not provide enough "ozone" to barley clean a glass of water, let alone 14cubic ft of water. That is why I asked, some have criticized my purchased of this device & might end up costing me more in the long run having to go get the JED230 anyway since it is more sufficient in cleaning a large body of water like this.
Why are you talking about turning your freezer on and off with a timer if you have Inkbird that does exactly that, starts and stops according to your water temperature?
the inkbird is something I discovered after I made this video that I think is a better option what I originally created
Which captain planet ring is that?
I bought an ice machine on ebay for $152. It makes 40-50lb of ice a day. I keep it in the guest bathrrom as there is plenty of space and a bathtub. Boom - cold plunge. I think most people are overthinking the cold therapy. Just get cold for as little money as possible bc you do not look cool spending hundreds, thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars to get cold. You instead look like someone who is easily manipulated by the fad of the year. For the record I can certainly afford any of those cold plunge options - or i can take my family to Hawaii in February for a similar price. Ice it is. Be smart. Nice ring.
You can afford anything except an engineering degree. You will quickly pay more for ice than a DIY cold plunge.
Im 6.4ft is 15.9 cu.ft big enough?
Not sure how big is yours
Find a floor model to sit in.
Should have used Teflon tape on the drain plug so you can still use it.
