Why Ukraine is stepping up its efforts to build border fortifications | DW News

  • Ukraine has welcomed a vote by US lawmakers to resume urgently needed military assistance. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the 61 billion dollar aid package gives his troops a real chance at victory on the battlefield.
Part of what Zelenskyy will use these American funds for, is fortifying Ukraine's borders. Drone technology has dramatically changed the battle for the skies and sea but on Ukraine's land border with Russia, the country's armed forces are focused on a far more traditional form of defense against a looming Russian offensive.

      1. They used much, much bigger bombs/mines in ww1 to try and do the same thing, it doesn't work that good,
      2. Defense in depth is the norm and means breaking any single line is ineffective.
      3. When one line is broken, a new line set up behind the other 2 or 3 existing lines. So long as Russia is unable to make any rapid advance (which they haven't in nearly 2 years now), any gain in ground will be measured in meters, no kilometers.

Probably a reason why they haven't taken Odessa yet.
The pipeline would then go from Odessa and towards Poland.

It's fantastic that the US is back, but total aid from the EU surpassed total aid from the US last year.
The EU basically funds the entire Ukrainian government. We (the US) don't transfer much money to Ukraine, but nobody has the arms stockpiles we do. Our aid is critical for that reason, at least until Europe's munitions factories come online next year.
We can be proud of our contribution, but let's not pretend our allies aren't doing their part. They are in fact doing more, even much more if we consider that transferring money out of the country hurts their economies, whereas what we do is barely noticable to us, because almost all our money stays in the US and just funds our manufacturing base.

Another example was that under the houses of parliament there was a factory producing navigation equipment that no one knew was there until years later after the war.

Ukraine had a president that _acting in good faith and in the best interests of the nation_ launched it on a course of solid growth and stability.
This leader devoted much effort towards improving and prospering his country. People wished to be _entertained_ and sent him packing, voting for a _comedian_ who promptly manoeuvred to deplete the nation off its citizens so that he might turn this land¹ into a colony.²
He staged a tragedy. No one is laughing.
Their tombstone is inscribed with these words, sublime, yet profound:
    _They took the bait..._
_...and here defeated the folly of their delusion._
¹ Ukraine: Land of milk and honey. _The plenty of game and fish, the innumerable bee-hives, deposited in the hollows of old trees and in the cavities of rocks, and forming even in that rude age a valuable branch of commerce, the size of the cattle, the temperature of the air, the aptness of the soil for every species of grain, and the luxuriancy of the vegetation..._ (A.D. 244 during the reign of Emperor Philip).
² The comedian’s objective: Assuming success, use of the land (that was _not_ promised to Ukrainians) is halted, housing prices skyrocket beyond reach with rent absorbing incomes, shunting the lifetime earnings of residents directly into the pockets of the chosen few, who, _laughing_ all the way to the bank, that without exerting any effort become rich beyond belief. After a lifetime of hard work citizens own nothing and die homeless on the street.

"[Ukraine] will not be a second Afghanistan". Wouldn't everyone want Ukrainian to be a second Afghanistan (i.e. Muscovites retreating)?
