  • Finishing up a project from my Franken-watch video. The Flag and Eagle watch case finally gets it's own movement, and it's a beauty. I also try to remove and clean the balance jewels for the first time. Come along and find out how that goes and see if I screw up my beloved Flag and Eagle Case....Ka-kawwww.

Hi Mark, lovely video work. For the upper balance jewels, I usually set the hole jewel in place first, and then once it's seated, I place the oiled cap jewel on top. The maneuver you are using is great for wristwatches, especially the incabloc shock settings.

Mark, this was a very instructive video, thank you. Could you have washed the watch case in your watch cleaning machine, or is it better to use the ultrasonic machine to clean the case, as you did? I'm wondering if the choice is just a matter of preference or if there is a technical distinction between the two cleaning processes that makes one preferable over the other for specific parts. Thanks, Rocky.

Hey, thanks for the great question. Basically the chemicals I use in the watch cleaning machine are designed to break up the old oils and lubricants and leave the surfaces of the watch parts completely dry. They also contain some brighteners that help to make the parts shiny. The agitation provided by the watch cleaning machine is sufficient for the these chemicals to do their job. The ultrasonic, on the other hand, uses cavitation (tiny bubbles) to break up dirt and grime and pull it to the surface and it works great at getting built up dirt out of the watch case cracks and crevices without having to use harsh chemicals, just a mild detergent works great for this. The ultrasonic can also be used to clean the watch parts but since I have the watch cleaning machine I prefer to use that for this step. I hope this makes sense. Thanks for watching and for the great comment.
