Frugal vs Cheap (What I Do and Don't Cheap Out On)

  • Frugal vs Cheap. I'm sharing my top 8 things I don't cheap on (higher quality items at typically higher prices) and 8 things I cheap out on (lower quality items at bottom dollar prices). The difference between frugal and cheap is that high end, name brand, high quality items can be purchased sparingly or bargain hunted out. For example, I might like to buy expensive shoes, but I can buy them on sale and be "frugal" by saving up the money for them when they're really needed. Other items are generic and might be considered "cheap" in material and can be purchased at a low cost at all times. They're cheap. We aren't discussing if people are cheap, just the items. What do you never cheap on?

I know some people think this is nasty, but I bought my son's name brand cloth diaper stash for $40, second hand. It felt like such a steal, since that's what I spent a month on disposable diapers. Still using them a year later!

I'm sure you saw them you were comfortable with the condition they were in. So good job! It's like I heard Oprah say on one of her shows. She had a man as a guest who was basically being frugal and smart. He talked about how if they go out to eat, they'll try to do the early bird. The audience snickered and Oprah said, "yeah, you're all laughing at him but he's laughing all the way to the bank." BOOM!

The older I get, the more I see wisdom in buying good quality things that's will last. I don't want to replace things if I can avoid it, and I don't want to support toxic manufacturing that exploits people. But... I'll cheap out on stuff for short term use. And I definitely thrift!

Hi, funny on the garbage bags.because where I work we have a product we use that comes in a big blue bag. I found they were just throwing them away, and they are really good bags, so I asked if I can take them home and the answer was YES! So every month I pack up the bags and take them home. I have not purchased garbage bags in 3 years and the free ones are such good bags...people at work now save them and there is enough of these bags that we all take them home. (yes even bosses)..so funny but cost effective.

Thank you for mentioning tips for wait staff. My daughters were waitresses in high school and college. Many people do not realize they don't get paid by the restaurant. Many times their official paychecks were for $1.12. They get paid by the tips customers leave and Sundays are the worst days for tips. Also, it was very common for a group of 8 or more people to leave a tip of $5 which has to be split between two servers. So what we do if we are in a group and someone else picks up the bill, we leave a generous tip to help balance what they might get from the one who pays the bill. We normally always leave a 20% tip unless service is less than desirable then they get 10% or if deplorable (terrible rudeness) they get less. We have only not left a tip at all one time. Granted, we don't go out to eat much, but that is how we choose to treat our wait staff as if they were our daughters.

I agree about shoes. I used to buy cheap shoes and they just fall apart quickly or end up hurting my feet and I end up buying more. So important that my son has good back to school shoes especially. We also don't cheap out on Winter coats. With our winters up here, (-30) we need good quality jackets. I also don't go cheap on laundry detergent, garbage bags and batteries, bicycles, oh the list goes on and on. I don't spend a lot on purses either.

We have our little kids sleeping on queen size mattresses from birth. We used to cosleep., and then my husband built them a queen over queen bunk bed. We bought expensive mattresses from the beginning knowing they will use them all the way to college, and now their spines are developing. But e bought cheap $30 mattress protection covers from Walmart, and even when overnight accidents happened, I just wash the cover and the mattress still looks like new.

I think the trick for so many things is to decide if you are paying more because of the quality in an item or are you paying more just because it is a trendy item or for brand recognition. Sometimes it's both. And if we do decide to pay more then perhaps we also just decide to do with less, specifically in the areas of clothing, purses and shoes.

I love this video! I go cheap on dish soap, dish detergent, paper towels, plastic zip bags, and other common, household items like that.
I agree that no bra is better than wearing one and I avoid wearing one at all costs, but bras are something I don't skimp on. I feel like they totally affect your level of comfort and confidence when you do you have to wear one.
Another thing I don't skimp on is makeup. Not to say you always have to buy high-end make up, but I feel like there are a lot more high-end brands that are better for my skin and cruelty free.

I agree with you on a lot of things that you do or do not buy cheap. I have tried to buy shoes cheap for my kids in the past and found out they fall apart right away. I also like good quality laundry detergent and diapers. I have stop buying furniture at IKEA though. I bought a small kitchen table set from them one time and a computer table and both of them got bad on me almost right away. I have bought cheaper furniture at Ashley's furniture with similar results, and I have found it is better to spend a little more money to have furniture to last longer, especially with having a lot of kids in the house, instead of constantly replacing cheap furniture.

When it comes to what I don't go cheap on I guess I will pay the price for shoes but only to a certain point I don't go cheap on paper plates which I have plates that are reusable and you can wash them certain foods.
I have a lot of things that I do go cheap on like haircuts for myself I just do it myself a cheap out on garbage day and recycling bags are usually go the store brand at Walmart I want to build on a purse long as it has been I'm looking for and does what it does. Also, I've found another deodorant brand called Sierra Essentials. My boyfriend prefers natural deodorant, but we've found that Tom's doesn't cut it with the type of work that he does. Sierra Essentials deodorant holds up to the all day wear of a sweaty man!!!

Purses you can sometimes purchase new or next to new from Goodwill designer brands (just have to be lucky and good timing) Same as shoes sometimes you can pick up some great branded shoes in excellent condition for a quarter of the price.
Deodorant I sometimes get it half price when on special, I buy a few and have them stored away, same with good toothpaste buy up when half price and store them away.
Pasta is a good meal for filling up a hungry family, toss in some mince, carrots and celery, pasta sauce, you can make a great big batch for not a lot of money.
I started shopping at Aldi, pretty sure you would have that in your country, but the prices are quite low, so a good alternative, even cat and dog food cheaper there.

I agree with almost everything on the list. Unfortunately I can't go cheap on bras because I wear an uncommon size. I've also found I get a lot more wear out of expensive bras. I'm busty but have a small band measurement and narrow shoulders, and found the straps on cheaper bras stretch out too much for me. I'm all about Ikea for furniture though. My only objection to cheap kids mattresses are the bunk bed ones with a particle board base and thin layer of foam for the mattress. My sister and I shared one of those in high school and it was very uncomfortable.

A great way to get good savings on shoes is to shop for them in August. At least for our area, it seems like not only are there back to school sales, even on adult shoes like running and walking shoes, but a lot of times you can get a really good deal on "last year's models" if they are still hanging around in the store stock room. I scored 3 really good pairs of running shoes for my husband and I and spent around $105. This was 5 years ago! They are still holding up great minus one pair getting eaten by our dog before we got a chance to train him to leave shoes alone 😊😊

I never go cheap on technology and equipment, but I always aim to buy around Black Friday, or something with a really good deal on.
With food - I aim for the best quality, but cheapest at the same time, a lot of frozen foods, while diversifying with some fresh organic, in season, here and there - I don't believe in compromising with the quality of what I put in my body.
    On the other hand,
Clothes - I go to charity shops, or mend my old clothes until they're embarrassing to be seen in.
Shoes - I usually buy new, go for deals, but keep it super cheap - which is something I think I should stop doing, because my feet aren't very happy about that.
Furniture - the cheapest, but good looking at the same time, so it does mean I have to go into more expensive territory sometimes.
I don't drink alcohol, smoke, have kids or own a car - so tons of money cut from that; cheapest haircuts (in the UK a barber costs several times less than a female salon, trick is to find one who isn't worried about cutting 'female hair').
I think the bottomline is - do what feels right according to your circumstances. Just never spend more than you earn. :D

  • @JustFrugalMe
    @JustFrugalMe Před 5 lety +1

Being cheap is about spending less even if it sacrifices quality, value and time in order to cash in on some short-term savings. Cheap people settle, because to them money spent is money gone.
When you are being cheap you are not cheating anybody but yourself. A frugal person thinks ahead; the frugal person plans, budgets and creates a road map to your destination. Being frugal is about prioritizing your spending so that you can have more of the things you really care about.

From my experience cheap is expensive. You always keep replacing it or the it causes you serious damage and good luck with the medical bills. I agree we can save on coffee by making your own at home. And cutting down on the dining out and going to movies . Also quality of life matters to me.

There are so many simple tutorials online for cutting your own hair. You just need a wall mounted or door mounted mirror behind you. Box hair colors are foolproof and very natural looking, don't be afraid of coloring at home. Just do a strand test first by mixing up a small amount at the ratio they tell you on the instructions. You can make a box last for 2-3 applications if you're willing to measure and keep unused product tightly sealed, unmixed, in its box. You can literally paint on highlights or lowlights for a couple of dollars. I've saved thousands over my lifetime, and get a lot of compliments.

You can make your own cheap and good laundry soap from washing soda, baking soda, and castile soap. I use it for several years now. And deodorant is even easier -get some zinc oxide powder and mix it with some oil like coconut or any other. Works so well, that you might not need to apply it daily. Or take a teaspoon of activated charcoal a day internally in a glass of water. I totally agree on shoes, daily shoes, that is. I am not so picky about party shoes, which are worn short.

Si think any time you have special needs such as allergies, intolerances, or disabilities. It makes going cheap much harder. For instance, I have to buy certain brands of foods because of my moms stomach issues or I need to use an iPad for my low vision. I also have seen people judge those choices as "snobby" when they don't see the whole story.

I dislike cheap handbags or purses, my husband paid almost £30 for a new purse ( wallet in USA) one that has RIDA control and keeps my coins secure also I own about 6 handbags but they are all genuine leather and generally well known brands, I keep one bag for uniform one body cross bag for daily use just jumping to shop etc both black, I have one brown one multi shades of cream brown lack that can go with most outfits I own plus two tote bags one navy one burgundy both were gifts as was my top range multi coloured one. My favourite perfume is very expensive but my daughter discovered a perfume house that reproduces the exact chemical formula ( most perfumes are bought by the high end of the market from specialist pharmaceutical blenders people trained for years to smell the individual notes of the scent they sell the blend with a batch number like GK 126-5/4 and the buyers rename it and market it. They own the marketed name brand but not the mix that remains the blenders patented item. They can and do sell the exact blend to anyone but it must not be sold using a too similar name I love Valentino's plain Valentino perfume but I wear kinetic woman no difference in smell but massive difference in price) but in an oil based rollover top and I love it the oil lasts longer on my skin and there is never a alcohol base rash to deal with you should check this out honestly one of my friends wears two extremely well known and pricey perfumes has done for years I challenged her to tell me which arm had her own bottle from her handbag on and which the oil. She couldn't tell but chose because this one just smells richer somehow yep the oil there are so many things we buy that we really can do better with if we look. I encourage you ladies or even men wanting to surprise your lady to look on eBay or Amazon for perfume oils they will be amazed I was

I prefer to buy high quality purses. I bought a couch purse at the outlet store when my first daughter was a baby. She was 9 when I finally replaced it with a new one. That was after using it almost every single day for 9 years. All the leather was still in perfect condition and the only wear that showed was in the stitching of the bag pattern in a few spots. That was it! After that experience I will never skimp on a purse again.

Thin toilet paper tends to make the finger touch the feces... so I prefer thick, and NOTHING should be flushed down the toilet. The hugest thing flushes should be BMs, no q-tips, no tp, no wipes.. none of that. I accidentally bought the scented laundry soap-- I was going to give it to the neighbor, but I decided to use it to clean rags. I rip up old worn cotton clothes and that is used for cleaning rags. I love that you use cloth diapers. ..I have a separate garbage specifically for used toilet paper next to the toilet.

For diaper i use flour sack towel, well absorb and last long. Detergent for kid they need the kind that doesnt have dye, fragrance otherwise their sensitive skin will get rashes for the adult most will work. As for bags, i think spending around 100 to 200 for one is decent, itll last much longer than those $50 bag. For mattress, i believed u want a good mattress for kid with maybe cheap mattress protector. Itll protect their backs and posture. And a latex one will last yoi 20 years to 30 years. I always go with latex mattress

For things we do/don't cheap out on; we do not cheap out on pillows, cookware (but I always look at tjmaxx or Ross for these!), tea, household products (we buy plant based cleaners and detergents), personal care items (I make our own soap now, and we buy Nature's Gate deodorant - Tom's of Maine sometimes has aluminum in it, so be sure to check the formulas!), food storage containers (glass only for this house! I always look for great deals though), vitamins, and food (I love great deals and shop at places like Grocery Outlet on a regular basis, but will not compromise health/quality/content!). Things we do cheap out on: toilet paper, laundry baskets/storage baskets (they work great even if they are from big lots or the dollar tree if you are discerning when picking them out), craft items (check out Ross for canvases, paints, chalk markers, etc, so much cheaper than a craft store and works great), otc medications like ibuprofen (I'm an RN and feel 100% comfortable using generics for most things, with a few exceptions that are mainly personal preference), and furniture EXCEPT our one nice couch, which has been a great place to retreat into comfort. Everything else we own is second hand furniture! Some we even got for free 😊

  • @Volleyball_Chess_and_Geoguessr

It's interesting to hear what you don't cheap out on. I don't cheap out on deodorant either, or toothpaste. I don't cheap out on corn based foods, I get organic because corn is GMO if it's not organic. Most foods we don't cheap out on actually, I think your diet greatly affects your health. But we try not to eat out much.
We actually DO cheap out on laundry detergent. One time I accidentally put fabric softener in instead of detergent and the clothes came out just as clean. So I think just water does most of it. I make my own. I do use Tide for diapers. Won't cheap out on detergent for diapers.
You need to invest in a waterproof cover for the matresses. I agree we spend too much time in bed to cheap out on that.
I don't cheap out in glasses frames. They spend too much time on my face.
I usually ask myself how much use it's going to get and how important it is to me to decide how cheap to go.
I didn't cheap out on a camera because photos are very important to me and I might turn it into a bit of a career at some point.
I cheaped out on my computer! $250 for my laptop. All I do is go on the internet. It opens a browser, why spend more.

I really like the music for this video! But the reason of writing is I don't go cheep on music and movies, I won't go to concerts or the movie theater. But I feel the best seat in the house is my chair. I have been going cheep on movies in a way by buying them on Google play instead of the blu ray, but my wifi is buggy so I'm going back to blu ray. I should stick with DVD because I don't see a difference in quality of the film but most of my relatives who borrow my movies don't return the thing in the same quality as I loaned it out so I buy blu ray because they all only have dvd players. But I have cable and if Id just wait, these same movies will come to the cable networks, but then thete are times when the rain knocks out the dish and back to the trusty blu ray. Thank you for your videos!

I used to buy the Tide Simply laundry detergent because I could get it for around $2 for ~25 loads. It took me a while to realize that my clothes weren't all that clean or good smelling with this detergent. I "splurge" now and get Tide pods or Gain flings and in my opinion they're worth the extra few dollars. I should have known that the extremely cheap detergent was too good to be true.

i think its such a case by case basis, not sure if there is one category I always go cheap on. For example, with makeup, I go cheap with blushes, but i buy an expensive foundation because I have ane xtremely difficult skin tone to match. For our TV, we only have one TV so we bought a pricier TV, but we would go cheap on a TV in the bedroom if had room for a TV there. With home decor, for something like a clock, we go pricier with that, because its a statement piece, but then have gone cheap with vases bc they aren't as noticeable. Same thing with food-go expensive on meats and milk (where companies will pump the most hormones in cheaper versions of that item), but I will go cheap on bread and cereals.
