  • Saving money and cutting expenses isn't easy. We often think that if we'd just made a little more money, things would be easier. This isn't always the case. Oftentimes the more we earn, the more we spend. Here are 15 different things we cut from our budget and don't miss at all (mostly).

    Since the serious budgeting started in March 2017 (courtesy of learning about Dave Ramsey) have cut out expensive haircuts, dying my hair, makeup (got plenty that's still ok to use), clothes, shoes and accessories (will indulge when I need stuff and try consignment stores) cleaning products (make my own), no meat (easy), McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken etc and also other takeaways, bought lunches, alcohol (except for celebrating milestones, like savings!) Worth it - contentment rules

      I cut out most of these as well because of D. Ramsey lol except meat because my bf is a carnivore (he's actually allergic to many plant based foods) but we did cut down on meat, we used to eat a lot of it before but now we mix w/ a lot of veges that he can eat like zucchini, broccoli, and peppers. But what a difference though when I finally cut my fast food & Sephora habit lol I don't miss it at all which I thought would never happen.

    Something I do is to buy quality clothing. I used to buy cheap clothes but those don't last and you end up buying more. This works for me and the few clothes items I have, I really like. Thank you for sharing your tips!

    • @gigihonee
      @gigihonee Před 5 lety

      Agree. My clothes aren't as high quality as my husbands, he works out of the house, but he does wear $200 trousers. We are frugal and minimalists - have been since the early 90s when we got married. We share a small closet and one dresser. Eat primarily vegetarian. $50 a week on food - and it's an expensive city. Have never been in debt, have a large emergency fund and just buy what we need and make conscious purchases on items we want. I write down all items I want and then just 'sit' on the list and see how i feel about the item a few weeks or months later.

    Great video!! I’m Vegan, filter on kitchen faucet, library, no cable, unlimited data on my phone (part of group plan with friend), cut my own hair, henna my own hair (although haven’t in over a year), do my own nails, make my own coffee. I will splurge on pedicure once in a blue moon bc since I’ve broken my hip it’s hard to do it myself. I rarely buy clothes. I do have a vegan restaurant habit that I’m trying to cut back on. I get videos out of library, once in a blue moon I buy a few books on book outlet (bargain books), use dish clothes, not sponges. Use TJ’s lavender dryer bags...then reuse as carpet freshener when vacuuming. Try to lump all my errands together to save gas.

    Also: Get 3 ingredient bar soap on sale at Whole Foods and use it for bathing and washing your hair. Much healthier and cheaper than chemicals in expensive shampoo. Cut out conditioner. There is enough oil in the soap you won't need it. Learn to cut your own hair on CZcams. Simple cuts are easy. I wet my hair and make two pigtails in rubber bands and cut them off a couple of inches. Be sure to cut them off the same length. Voila! For bangs, wet your overgrown bangs, and twist and twist and twist, then cut. Amazing. Buy organic coffee at Walmart for $7 pound. Cut Netflix. Go Amazon Prime movies. Try to organize your errands so you just go out once. Drop yoga classes. You can do yoga with CZcams. Ride your bike to work. Or get a safe driving beacon with your insurance company to be rewarded for good driving. Use the library, don't buy books. Fix stuff. I just fixed my beloved flip flops. I am still bathing in a glowy feeling of accomplishment. One word: Goodwill. Most of my clothes came from Goodwill. Two words: garage sales. And three: Craigslist free stuff. Skip breakfast. It is a myth that it is important. Fast one day a week, or do the 16 hour fast every day. Most of that time you are asleep anyway. You will lose weight and be healthier. Stay home. Stay home. Stay home. It feels good not to waste money and resources.

    We stopped going to the mall for "fun". It was the thing to do. Go to the mall with the kids and walk around. You ALWAYS end up spending money. Food. Something the kids saw they HAVE to have. Also, we have a policy of no single use items. Like disposable dishes or zip bags.

      @Meredith471 Před 6 lety +2

      Miriam Caccavallo we do use store brand Ziploc bags in our house, but we will wash them out and reuse them multiple times before they go in the trash. Because it is just my husband and I, we also use disposable plates often, but will wipe them clean and reuse them if possible. We do not buy these items unless they are on sale and we can stock up and have them last for months at a time.

    My once a week splurge is I go to Costco and get a $1.50 hot dog and soda. I sit and watch people. I talk to a lot of people too. Because the seating is tight, people will often come sit by me. It's nice. While I am there, I pick up a rotisserie chicken, bring it home and shred it. $4.99, and I can eat 10 meals out of it, lunch and dinners. Tacos, salads, sandwiches, rice and veggies with chicken. Chicken is my favorite meat. I never get tired of it.

    Are there more ideas for people who are actually living paycheck to paycheck and can't seem to get out of debt? I have already cut out a lot...can't get hair cuts, fancy coffee, barely can afford used clothes and shoes. (Family of 4) I feel like those ideas are for people that make good money and can afford them to begin with....its like when people say to stop drinking soda and you'll lose weight and you already don't drink soda (so the advice doesn't help)

    • @msdanaryan
      @msdanaryan  Před 6 lety +31

      +creationoflove84 Hmm I see. When we were paycheck to paycheck we had to take a hard look at everything we were spending money on. We dropped the kids out of preschool, cancelled cable, ended memberships etc. After that we worked on increasing our income. That may be the point you're at. If you've cut everything you can cut - start working on landing extra jobs or selling things. Hope that helps. You can do this. HUGS! ❤️💕

      @creationoflove84 Před 6 lety +6

      @kaydeedid_it2059 Před 6 lety +18

      creationoflove84 I have been where you are, and I know it can be overwhelming and depressing. If you have truly cut everything you can cut, then you have to think about making more money. Have you thought about working at a daycare where you would get paid plus have childcare? If your health problems don't permit that, find something you can make at home to sell. You say your husband works two jobs. Would it be possible for him to put out resumes or applications for a higher paying job, so maybe he wouldn't have to work quite as much? Also, people buy and sell used baby and kid's clothes on Craigslist and Facebook all the time. Maybe you could find nice clothes at a thrift shop and resell them at a consignment shop or online. These are just a few ideas that I hope can help you. When you are exhausted or sick, it's hard to mentally focus, so ideas from other people can sometimes help. I hope that your circumstances turn for the better soon!!!

    • @creationoflove84
      @creationoflove84 Před 6 lety +7

      Thank you so much for your kind reply :)
      My husband has considered that but he lacks a formal education...every time he looks at another job we add up the perks of the one he has now (main job) and it always is better to stay at what he is doing.
      If he starts in another industry we would take a drastic pay cut because he would start at the bottom.
      I will consider starting to sell off some of the baby clothes we already have (I don't think my health will permit me to have another baby, even though we want one more) very good suggestion. Thank you so much. Merry Christmas to you xo

    • @kaydeedid_it2059
      @kaydeedid_it2059 Před 6 lety +15

      You are SO welcome. When I say I know how you feel, I truly mean it. When I was pregnant with my first child, my husband could only find odd jobs and we lived in a three room house with no running water. I had to fill jugs for drinking and bathing. He dropped out of school in the ninth grade so no higher education for him. I suffered from anemia, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue constantly. I think the key we found was to become a true team, the "it's us against the world" mentality. Be each other's best friend and biggest fan. Make each other believe that they can do whatever it takes to make a better life, both of you. My husband only has a ninth grade education, but through a great work ethic and perseverance, he makes a good living for us; and as for my health conditions, they are eighty percent better because I never stopped looking for answers to feel better. I had a procedure to stop my anemia, found out I had a terrible vitamin D deficiency so started supplements, and try to eat as healthy as possible. No sodas, try to limit fast food and sugar as much as possible. It is an ongoing journey, but just don't give up. It will get better. And oh, here's a creative tip for saving money - put half inch bubble wrap on your windows that let the light in, it insulates like a second pane but lets the sun in to heat your home! And be sure to use led bulbs and unplug everything when you not using it. Hope you have a wonderful day!!!

    I love using my reusable pads! They are so much more comfortable and soft than disposables, and don't make that annoying crinkly sound. It takes some getting used to, but it's really not too big of a hassle. For people wondering about this, Amazon has great reusable pads options and you can get different sizes. Many will send you a wet bag to use with them, so if you are at work and need to change one, just place it in the wet bag until you get home. I just rinse mine under cold running water in our bath tub and hang dry until I am doing a laundry load that requires hot water, like sheets or towels. They go into the laundry load and come out clean and soft again! It might sound gross, but it's really not so different from trying to rinse blood out of your panties when your disposable pad shifts and you bleed through, or washing blood out of clothing from getting hurt or getting a nose bleed. Just don't overthink it! 😊😊

Think where you came out of screaming with your mouth open when you were born. Think about where surgeons, docs or vets (esp re cows) have to stick their hands. Everything in life is extremely gross. A bit of your own blood seems minor!
      Most of them come with dark liners so you don't see much.

      Here is a recipe for making Homemade Fabric Softener!
      What You’ll Need:
       6 cups HOT water
       3 cups white vinegar
       2 cups Suave Refreshing Waterfall Conditioner {or other favorite scent}
      What You’ll Do:
       Mix conditioner & hot water well, until conditioner is dissolved completely.
       Add the vinegar, and mix well.
       Store in a large container {empty fabric softener container, empty large vinegar bottle, etc}

    The only things on your list I sometimes buy are convenience foods and books. Sometimes I find the pre-chopped veggies end up cheaper than buying them all separately. Especially when I buy frozen. I only buy books if it's something I really want and can't get at my library. I never buy fiction because there is always other books I can read but I will buy reference books, books for my job, etc. Other things I cut out are clothes, disposable anything really, and gifts lol.

      Please don't say gifts... Well depending on the exact context. I know people who would always get out of gift giving by saying they were broke but would always happily accept gifts ...and also go for weekly nail appointments, get their hair done etc. Where a gift is necessary, appropriate, agreed, expected or whatnot, it can still be cheap but thoughtful at least. But if you all agree to cut them, then great.

    Thanks for the update. I cut out meat years ago, but my situation is the same with my husband as with yours. Maybe someday he will give it up completely for his health.
    Magazines are something that used to give me a lot of pleasure, especially those expensive, glossy, seasonal ones! I live overseas and have limited access to English language magazines these days, and since enbracing minimalism, I have just kept the best ones from prior Christmases, for example, and bring them out to enjoy again. It is no longer that hard to resist the new issues at newstands here because they are hugely marked up. I do go to get regular hair cuts and they always have the latest issues of fashion magazines. So this is my bit of luxury that helps me keep up with current trends.
    Thanks for always being so forthright and cheerful about how to cut back on expenses. None of us should ever feel compelled to apologize for living within our means. Where I live, it is bad manners to be wasteful and this has really influenced me to check myself.

I have considered canceling my cable, which is combined with my internet. Now, we have to keep the internet for school and work, so I can't cancel that, but when I have called to cancel the cable part, it only saves me about $30. I'm getting a great deal by combining both my cable and internet. I figure, if I cancel it, and get Netflix and/or Hulu, I'd still be paying about the same. So I have just kept it. Would you still recommend canceling it?
