Credit cards are a addictive thing I’m going good now I had gotten myself in about 30 grand in credit card debt and I was like “ why do I make 80k and I’m broke ??” Well I was spending all my money on credit card bills !!!! I’m down to 14k in debt and I’m getting a 10k bonus from work and it’s going on credit cards !!! I’ll be debt free at the end of the year

If you have a weak moment and buy something at the store, return it. Save all your receipts and those things that end up being extra items after your DIY project, take them back with your receipt, do it right away, like the day you are done with your project. Having a binder with all our receipts in it has saved us money. The extra items are not sitting on the shelf somewhere. No clutter to deal with either.
Just today I returned an unused tube of caulk and 3 paint rollers to the hardware store instead of just throwing them in the basement!

The key to credit card usage is definitely based on "if you have a problem with it!" Some people can get out of debt while still using credit cards if they're responsible and use it like a debit card.
I am NOT one of those people lol. Credit cards are tempting for me. So I straight up paid it off and closed the account while I pay off my student loans.
Well its not just that. Of course its possible to be responsible with credit cards but the statistics show that MOST are not. 78% of folks have no margin at the end of the month. According to the federal reserve the average household has 150,000 of debt and an incom of 59,000. Most people are not responsible so its better to be on the side of "no credit" that "responsible credit" because you would not believe the logical acrobatics people will go through to get something in payments. Im glad to hear that your honest with yourself and steer clear of it 💪😎👌
Matthew Garcia While I would also rather be on the side of no credit myself, I don't steer quite so to the side of "Never use credit cards period." I know people who use credit cards and pay them off as soon as they see the charges hit. People can still budget and use credit cards. Lots of people in the debt free community are still using credit cards buying things they can actually afford and paying off right away as soon as possible :)
Sure, people spend more using credit cards. But how about debit cards? People spend more in general using any sort of card, credit or debt. Cash is the best way to feel the money and probably spend less.
I prefer no credit cards myself, but I respect a responsible person's decision to use credit cards.

@@AlisonReeves as long as you avoid consumer debt (things that you buy that make you no money). Things like a 🚗 are hard to justify mathematically. Its and assest that you burrow at interest, you still have to pay to maintain it (repairs&maintenance), and it will lose half of what it was worth after your financing is done.

I just discovered your videos. Being retired, and living mostly on SS is hard. Debt accumulates before you even notice. So many of the things you suggested, I have already done out of necessity. But there is more for me to do. I sew and quilt, the big thing this year was to stop going to fabric stores! That might sound funny, but it could easily be compared to an addiction. I found a local group that makes charity quilts, they have all the fabric, etc., I just go and pick out what I want, bring it home, sew to my hearts content, and then return it to be donated. No cost, all the gratification, and I don’t need to store it. I’ve been making holiday gifts from the scraps. I tried making things to sell at various stores that take crafts, the results were interesting, but the fees and cost of materials ate up whatever profit there might have been, plus the materials were most often on my credit card accruing interest. Of course not everything sold..... so that was a plan that did not work for me, not to mention the stress it created in my already stressed life of caregiving and volunteering. I also have learned to say NO to constant requests.
Car maintenance is an issue, and resulted in a debt that I could have handled differently. Thanks to your advice, I realized that. I have another maintenance coming up, following your advice, I will shop around and not act impulsively out of panic. Thank you so much, your posts (I’ve now watched a few) are so helpful. Really great advice. I have been doing most of the steps you mentioned in the video for years now, not so much to get out of debt because we don't have big debts but to save money. However, its hard because there are so many temptations to use the credit card. I have seriously thought about throwing them away .

Thanks Dana i have made almost all of those mistakes mentioned but i stopped borrowing, i cut off some expenses and it was hard to bring my husband on board but God helped me now he can see and he is slowly coming on. Our debt is from a business line from an old business, personal loan and car payments. (And House but saving that for later). Odd - but I’ve always used a credit card and always pay in full each paycheck (basically using it like a debit card).

Thank you for this video. I think it’s important to emphasize that although it is harder to get out of debt when your spouse is not completely on board, it’s not impossible. And it shouldn’t be used as an excuse to do nothing. The spouse that wants to get out of debt should do whatever they can, coupon, cut personal spending etc. it will take longer and be more challenging but it’s not impossible. That spouse would also be leading by example and the other spouse may be encouraged to get with the plan eventually.

It’s not impossible and shouldn’t be an excuse to not to move forward, but it can be very hard. I actually had just started learning about Dave Ramsey right before my unexpected divorce. While I was never one to stay confined to a strict budget, I did see the benefit of gaining control of our finances and building wealth beginning by paying off debt. However, my (now ex) husband definitely did not believe in getting out of debt. He believed you can’t take money with you when you die so you might as well enjoy as many of life’s luxuries as credit and minimum payments will allow. It’s so important to be on the same page as your significant other, but I definitely think a lot of “gung-ho” Dave followers need to compromise with their spouses and understand it’s going to take patience and time for them to commit to the process.

sometimes its so hard to be on the same page in a couple. especially when only one person has debt. no matter the strong will and dedication you might have to pay it off. its as if you're living a separate life from your partner in some ways. 😅
These are good tips, but what about for people that are already low-income ( on social security with no extra way to make money). I've thought about selling stuff but what I have are already second hand and on it's last leg. My money is usually always tight.always hurts every month.

Right now, check with your student loan provider and find out if they are waiving interest charges if you keep making payments. Saving 4%+ in interest and making payments that go 100% to your loan is a great advantage. Pay if you can. 4% of 100,000 is $4000, a lot of money. If you can pay make sure your student loan is still being deducted from your checking account and continue to pay.

What do you think about the idea of having a different budget for every month of the year and using the same ones round and round, so the same November budget year after year, for example, as a basis for that month's budget, because we probably all have things we pay for once a year. For instance, very small item, but every November I buy a block of unsalted butter for a Christmas cookie I make.

I'm trying now to feel the pain. I'm at about 32k in credit card debt, 10k car loan. I feel like shit. I make 72k a year and I'm broke as hell because of my lifestyle. This sucks. But imma man up pay this crap off.

One of the best side hustles you can have is overtime.
I realized (again) a couple of weeks ago that if I didn't have to pay these "extra" bills, I wouldn't be perennially broke so that's it, I took the middle debt first and paid off most of it, God willing next month it'll be done, then I start on the smallest, higher interest one, applying what I usually paid on it plus the payment from the other debt, then when that's done (July, I hope) I'll apply all the payments from the two previous debts plus its usual payments and I should be done with that early 2020. I pay more than double the minimum, some it's more like four times as much. I do have a $1000.00 saved for emergencies. I am also doing a buy "hardly anything year" but month to month so I'm not overwhelmed. I've been really good so far, just started in January 2019. There are some things I have to buy like canning jars as I'm doing some food prep too, but those come out of expenses and will be paid off as soon as the credit card bill comes in. I shop online, so I need my credit card, due to health problems. It can be hard but it's so nice when one doesn't have those extra bills coming in. I was debt free completely for 11 years, then I let it get away from me, NO MORE😇 I'm a senior on a fixed income, eat once a day (need to lose some weight) and can be really frugal when the mood hits me.

I like to create small income streams, because non of them are too stressful
I set our budget quarterly, break down to monthly, then weekly. We set our bill pay for a 4 week month. There 1 extra paycheck somewhere in the quarter. That we use for the extra stuff, new tired, auto repairs, new glasses, etc. What ever is not allocate for something goes in savings for the "unexpected" things.

I'd say it's to use for unexpected things. Blown tires would count, but an oil change wouldn't. Food expenses are pretty predictable so that should be budgeted for. Hope that helps. ❤️
@@msdanaryan Tire emergencies are good for that list. For food I mean if freezer goes off and you didnt know and you loose all the food. This one actually happen to me.

Right now my goal is to not add to my debt. The next phase will be to start paying one off more aggressively. When that one gets paid off, I am going take half what I paid to that, and add it to my next highest debt and the other half will be spread over the remaining debts. By doing this, I hope to show more than minimum payments to each company and also that I am decreasing debt and increasing available credit. Then, I will start calling to get my interest rates lowered. Paying an extra $100 to my debt each month is great. Getting the interest rate lowered so that I am charged $100 less to start with is even better and doing both would be the best. Obviously, I will have to start with paying more, because once you go into debt, your credit score goes down. And like you said, I am not going to get too aggressive, because I don't want to have to pull out a credit card to pay for a car repair; so I will also be making a payment to savings each week.

Sorry but 1k isn't enough of an emergency fund. Dave made this up many years ago, and with inflation this is a drop in the bucket. I think now it would be a good idea to at least double that.
I finally saved the 1k and have been debating adding more or putting toward my debts. I saved the 1k with the 3mo challenge (333.33 each month).
Ramsey always say to start a 1k minimum emergency fund. You are not gonna stay at 1k of course, if you can you can keep adding even if it’s little by little while you pay your debt.

Credit cards aren't neccessarily the problem. It's the way people use them that is the issue. If you use it as a debit card, then they are fine. If you use them as a loan, then it's a problem. We use our credit cards like debit cards because if the number is stolen, our checking and savings account aren't drained. We also use them for the cash back rewards on things we were going to buy anyways like gas, groceries, and even bill pay. We typically get back 1-5% cash back just for using the card. We just made a habit to check the account daily and pay off what was spent the day before. If you don't have the money in your checking/savings account to buy the item right then, then you don't buy it. Simple.

Sorry, I think a monthly budget is too short a time. I have quarterly bills, annual bills and bills that happen every three or five years. I do a 12 month budget and do the necessary adjustments for each month as different things happen. I update it each month, so that it is always a 12 month budget.

Hi Dana, could I ask your advice please? I have 3 credit cards: 9k on one, 1.5k on each of the others. I would dearly love to pay them off but should I aim to pay off the largest first, or the smallest first?
Rhonda M Dave Ramsey recommends snowballing it and focusing on the smallest debts first! So maybe pick the 1.5k credit card with the highest interest and pay it off first, then the other 1.5k credit cards, then the 9k one! :)

I really don't understand why someone can't do this alone. I also hate the idea of an emergency fund when that money could be on a credit card or something so that you don't get charged the interest. I feel like savings and emergency funds can come later. I also disagree with the not using credit cards while paying them off, for me personally I get points on my card for using it and those points go back into my card to help me pay it off.
I agree Ashley, I have a credit card that I use and I just pay it off a couple times a month. I use it more as a debit card rather than a credit card, but I would never get rid of it because I get hundreds of dollars back at the end of every year. it’s a cash back card. I also have to kind of disagree with cutting out kids activities. I could never just cut my daughters dance or gymnastics out. I agree with the notion of cutting back and it’s going to hurt, but debt isn’t a kids fault and they shouldn’t suffer because of it. Maybe a better solution would be to cut down on the activities or change to a cheaper option? But cutting them out completely seems a little unfair.
KatieB I think they key is to have and keep a budget. I don’t think it matters so much your method of paying things as long as at the end of the day you’re bringing in more than you’re paying out and spending. All my bills go through my credit card too. It’s like a revolving door and I paid it off like that last month. Now it’s just current bills and spending. I don’t see why it’s not possible when I’ve literally done it. From $7000+ to only current purchases and expenses on it. I think that’s paid off enough. Now on to the next debt 😋
You don't get out of debt using credit cards. The points do not out way having a piece of mind when a emergency arises. I had your same mindset until I made changing. Don't have a poor man's mentality. Change your way of thinking. Have a great day.
@@sandrahardy9891 There's no reason you can't get out of debt using the credit card you're in debt with even. I got myself out of my credit card debt and I still never use anything but my credit card for purchases. I'm started on my LOC debt now and again, I still only use my credit card to buy things and reap the rewards of it. It's not about your method of payment, it's about living above your means or not. It's about sticking to your budget or not. It's not a poor man's mindset when I'm actively getting out of debt and on my way.

My sister took her husband and me out for lunch today at a steak place. I don't eat out more than a few times a year. Even though I wasn't paying the bill I still kept my eyes on The Price is looking for something cheap to order. I always look at prices first. My sister had the filet I'm so I asked her if it would be okay if I also ordered the filet which was around $20. I never would have ordered it if I was paying for it. But she had invited me out to eat and that was fine. There were only three of us there and two of us had water to drink and the bill came to $73 and I about fell off my chair. I guess I had gone out to eat so rarely that I had no idea how expensive it could be and I didn't really think it was so wise for my sister to be spending that type of money as well but I kept my mouth shut. I was thinking how I would have loved to put that $73 on my debt. I do keep my debt mentally in front of me all the time and after fighting against this debt for 12 years, I see us beating it by end of 20/20. We had some large financial crises that even an emergency fund could not have taking care of. But I am on a cash basis and my husband uses a credit card but does pay it off from his savings every month. I have become OCD about paying this debt off as well as setting up a sinking fund in order to take my grandson's to Disney World in about 2 years if we have saved enough money. We are raising our grandsons and they will be nine and eleven in about 2 years. In addition to the sinking fund we have a large Coca-Cola bottle that we all dump our change into any time we have some and I am also stashing away dollar bills every time I come home and have any in my wallet. We are already 65 but I don't feel it and I don't look it. Anytime someone is going to tell me of mistakes not to make I am going to listen closely. I'm not real interested anymore in watching videos of people who are already debt free. I want to watch people who can help tell me what else I can do to get there myself. thank you for your valuable information and I will definitely he'd what you have told me. By the way our debt started at $140,000 credit card debt and I am now down to less than $13,000 and I am waiting for $8,000 income tax refund from a prior year. Please keep giving all the information that you can to help someone like me and my husband to finally kill this debt. it may be small but one thing I never do is order anything except water at a restaurant because I never finish my drink anyway and soft drinks seem to run anywhere from about $3 to even $4 with free refills that I wouldn't use anyway. on the few occasions my family does go out to eat I tell them they can only order water unless they're willing to pay for the drink themselves because I won't do it. I'll invite my sister go out to Wendy's and I'll pick up the bill.
