    What GoPro setting did you find the most interesting? Want me to dive deeper into a camera related subject?
    Also, I *DO* know of one gimbal that'll work with the hero 7, but I'm sure you can't guess what it is. I'll cover that in another video. ;)

      Great and exceedingly helpful. Thanks again. RIP to the Hero 7 you used for the autopsy 😂. Question: what sound level do you bring your audio down to while editing/rendering? -3, -4??

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 5 lety +1

      If I'm using my pro gear? I record in -12, edit in -3. This video I edited in -6 and left out music because i didn't want people ears getting fatigued since the topic was all about sound quality.

      Was going to say, my 7 and Karma work very well. Which is a huge leap, compared to my 5. Because I can hear the motors and button presses, whenever I used it. It was very annoying.

    Great vid! For a Hero7 + gimbal solution, what about recording in stereo raw and only keeping the left audio channel (the one on top of the camera). If the camera doesn’t throttle the gain over to the right hand side mic for whatever reason, you should be able to dump the right side audio track and be left with a decent sounding mono track with little to no motor noise, no?
    I think I’m gonna have to go try this today đŸ€”

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 5 lety +1

      You can try that, but I'm pretty confident you're going to lose a lot of fidelity. You run the risk of the audio being pretty flat.
      There is a simple fix for this, and I've messaged EVO about it, so the ball is in their court now. 😉

    Excellent video! I was so bummed when I purchased a gimbal for my session 5 and found out the noise issue first hand. I do a lot of hiking and its dead quite so you hear everything! I ended up doing separate audio with a sony digital audio recorder and the mic you use in this video, but it was a pain to turn on and off both constantly and editing was no fun at all having to sync every clip.. I just bought a hero7 and am adding an external mic and this tutorial really helped me understand the characteristics of the hero7 audio both with and without a external mic. They need to design a gimbal with a built in microphone that is isolated from the motor vibration some how.. Thanks again!

    I don't even own a hero 7, but found this intriguing. I have a couple questions as I am thinking of going that route. With the windslayer did you experience any overheating? I'm guessing not as it looked chilly, but summer in Texas has me concerned. In the past I've run a lav mic into my phone to avoid buying the GoPro adapter, and synced the audio later. Have you had any luck with that type of setup? Appreciate this video! Should help a bunch of people.

      It's been way too cold to do any good heat tests. đŸ„¶ The back screen isn't covered so hopefully that acts enough of a heatsink to cool the camera. I try to avoid syncing extra audio when I can, it becomes a pita for longer clips.

    not there yet.

    Great info. Just invested in the mic adapter. Still silly expensive for something that older gopros did out of the box.
    Just a minute correction. The frequencies are not 1000kilohertz, they're 1khz or 1000htz. 1000khz, or 1mhz, is wayyyy outside of the human audible range. ;)

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 5 lety +1

    • @tristanm6392
      @tristanm6392 Pƙed 3 lety

      I have a go pro 7 and windslayer. The windslayer makes a big difference and audio sounds pretty good in stereo mode. It does over heat on a hot day, not much you can do about it. But the trick I do is have the Slayer in a cooling pack with ice in a bag to keep the Slayer cool for a while before I use it and it helps keep the go pro at a good temperature. It works. I wouldn't recommend cutting sections off the front of the wind Slayer, doing that will just allow more wind noise to squeeze through. It's best left the way as it is as a complete sleeve.

    Thanks for this! Really great video with lots of good info. My experience with the hero 7 and a lav mic is that I and the trail noise sounded pretty good but the mic didn't pick up any of the conversation around me. Your mic seemed to do a better job of picking up conversation so I'd chalk my experience up to using a cheap lav mic. I'm still not sold on hyper smooth footage vs the gimbal so I think I'm going to be sticking to the evo SS and hero 4 setup for my main pov camera and try to use the hero 7 for other interesting but secondary shots.

    • @TrailFeatures

Really nice video. After watching this I looked into how the "wind mic" works more and could not find much info. I take it when you use "stereo only" the wind mic is essentially getting turned off? Also really interesting how you can use stereo only, and if i understood correctly record raw sound to get information from all three mics as a form of backup when doing something perhaps more critical.

    Newbie CZcamsr here! Thank you for an excellent detailed review.đŸ‘đŸŸđŸ˜ I have shot a couple videos with my new hero 7 Black . And i was looking for the mic function and location info. So i have been using the wind setting and a windslayer. Useable but not good audio. Im also experimenting with the feiyutech wg2x. Unlike the Evo ss , the wg2x seems to be designed with the hero 5,6,7 model in mind. The evo ss was not designed with the newer gopro heroes in mind. So the Evo ss motor has to work extra hard and is, as you know noisey as heck. So evo created a "coin hack" counter balance that they sell to be placed on the side of one of the motors to balance the 5,6,7,đŸ‘ŽđŸœ...i will see if i can schedule time to my review of the WG2X with the hero 7.. thanks again.

I'm excited to give that a shot and it should help me improve my audio further, but the ore I lsiten to the purple panda it just has this quality I'm not sure I am a fan of. Thus why I'd like to the try the others. However, I might just try the windslayer and raw audio with the internal and call it a day. I just need to get those mics first and see if those give me what I am looking for with the external audio quality.

      I was impressed with the windslayer + stereo mics. It's not perfect, but ~80-90% of what the Hero 4 was.

    This was fantastic! Feel like you covered all the bases. Been looking to do something with the audio setup on my hero 7 because I just haven't been all that happy with it. I've used a windslayer but had considered getting the audio adapter and using a lav mic. Do you think that's worth the upgrade or do you see a bigger benefit in just really getting the audio edited properly in post production once you have the right protune settings? Thanks man, keep it up!

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 5 lety

      Protune really takes a lot of work to get it dialed. I'd say that if you never plan on using a gimbal, the external mic is the way to go.

    Hi, some very informative info in your video regarding hero 7 Black audio, overall the audio is ok for me, the main issue I have right now is when I use the hero 7 on my motorcycle, I use the Ulanzi cage so I can mount the external mike adapter neatly and near the camera, my mike is Lavalier ,basic model, my sound quality id good until I start riding and I have a fair amount of what sounds like clicking which obviously is not good, connections are all sound and mike is good as used the set up on my Hero 4, would appreciate your input re this issue? Many thanks, Derek

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 4 lety

      That could be a lot of things, very hard to troubleshoot without putting hands on it. It could be that vibrations are traveling up the cable to the lav mic. Some more affordable lav mics don’t have good vibration dampening built into the cable shield.
      That’s honestly the most I can think of. like I said really hard to troubleshoot that without seeing it in person.

    Do you - or anyone reading this - know the proper settings for a person trying to motovlog with GoPro7 and the audio adapter? I've tried changing the raw setting you mentioned and no matter what combination of settings I try, there is no sound when I plug in the sound adapter. Thanks.

    I feel silly for asking this, but to me GoPro settings and the way they are labeled confuse me. I watched another video that seemed to suggest using the wind mode is best for combatting wind noise while riding a motorcycle. This video made me rethink what the settings actually meant. To reduce wind noise while recording on a motorcycle do I actually want to select Stereo mode in the GoPro audio settings???

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 4 lety

      The wind setting will indeed reduce wind noise. However, at a big sacrifice to overall audio quality. The best thing to do is use dead cats patches or foam to cover the microphones. This will let sound through, but greatly reduce the wind noise.

      The less you let the GoPro decide for itself what settings to use, thee better results you get.

    Hi Joe, hope you are coping with this rather strange covid situation? My issue as a motorcycle blogger using Hero 7 and 8 Black, doing ground tests audio is excellent, so out on the Motorcycle hero 8, mic set up with dead cat inside my helmet, record and replay, as good as I need, go out again, record replay, ouch, were has that static noise come from, no changes to anything, so sometimes good then bad, help me please Joe it would be great to have audio that works every time? Thanks for this tutorial. Nice. So, what if I was using the Hero 7 in the rain and I don't want to get popping sounds in the top mic would the rain sound be ok with only the front wind mic? Or is there a better way to do it as in some cover or foam or the like?

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 5 lety +1

      I would use the internal microphones with a foam wind slayer over the GoPro. This will give you good sound in the rain with minimal peaking due to raindrops hitting near the microphone.

    • @drdimento
      @drdimento Pƙed 5 lety

      @@TrailFeatures I see. My fear with the slayer was that with the slayer wrapped around the H7, it would get literally soaked like a sponge and definitely not pocketable.

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 5 lety +1

      It's the lesser of evils at that point. Anything that will keep wind noise down will soak up water. You could throw it in a ziplock bag if you want to keep the water from soaking a pocket.

      @drdimento Pƙed 5 lety +1

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 5 lety

      You have a valid point, but it technically is stereo; just poorly implemented. To be honest, I've gone back to the Sony lav because the true stereo is so immersive with headphones.

    • @TrailFeatures
      @TrailFeatures  Pƙed 4 lety

      Pretty much the same settings. After a certain point, it's impossible to block wind noise. I personally think it adds to immersion of the video. Jordan Boostmaster used an add-on mic on his hero that had a great wind cover on it, so when you heard the wind rushing by you KNEW he was hauling!
