It’s the beautiful design, great movement inside, provenant manufacturer and story behind it that makes it an icon. Being rectangular is definitely a factor in its iconic status.
If you want the definitive rectangular watch in the watchmaking industry it’s either this or a tank. The reverso is the watchmakers watchmaker, ask Max Busser. Otherwise the tank is the more iconic, ask Mohammed Ali

Reverso is the watch collectors watch. Iconic to enthusiast but invisible to outsiders

I actually prefer the Monoface, because of its history and it's really cool when it's a gift and has a message engraved on the case back 😌
Just got mine a few hours ago and I have flipped it close to one hundred times.
Get the Reverso Duo, while the one with a steel caseback is true to original, to me the main selling point these days is the dual dial.

Honestly the flip isn't even half of why I want it. In fact until recent years I never cared much for it. As I became more engrossed in my little hobby though I gradually came to just love JLC and their work. And the Reverso, especially the higher tier ones, are just an excellent example of their craft.

If the Reverso is a $15,000 dollar fidget spinner then so is any watch with a rotating bezel. Many people enjoy tactile feedback from their watch

You might not play polo when you wear it but you can flip it. What’s the alternative use of a divers or explorer? That’s why it rules
I was led to believe its function was to protect the crystal while playing polo, cricket or presumably aggressive croquet.
I think it's ridiculous to expect people to come up with alternatives to the Reverso that have the same functionality. You could probably count the number of watches that allow the dial to flip on one hand, and even then you'd have to get extremely obscure in order to even do that. If you want the flip ability, then get the Reverso. There is no alternative. If you just like the design, then there are plenty of rectangular watches out there that would be suitable.
If you want the flip ability but not the Reverso, then Adrian is right.

The JLC is really nice very classic ! I’m don’t with Rolex n AP they are classics but it’s so played n stale now ! I’m 40 I had Rolex’s since I was 18 date just… subs … presidentially start owning differ brands now I’m over Rolex and the antics

Lol that's absolutely like far from why to purchase one. How about the top tier design, the fact that JLC can fit so many complications into a small watch ,or having a duoface where you can have pretty much two watches in one or 8 year warranty,1000 hours control tested. Or that one face can be more typical casual formal type then you turn it and it can be more unique like a skeleton chronograph. Come on bruh! Lol get a grip
It was made for 1920 british officers who damaged their watches while playing POLO so they can turn it and protect it on the field.

If you watch the full Podcast, each of them are supposed to come up with an alternative to a Reverso. He's upset because no one else is suggesting an alternative with the same functionality as the Reverso, aka being able to flip the dial around.

Why are some of the most expensive watches just ugly & way to cluttered , simple is more beautiful in my opinion, seiko marine master or Rolex sub is probably the most perfect, gold & diamonds on man’s watch just doesn’t do it for me , tacky
