    As someone who works in a hockey proshop sharpening skates, I 100% agree. Although at our shop we have figured out the technique to get them level the first time, the steel sucks, the lightness does not outweigh the benefits of the Pulse TI, or Bladetech blades, or Blacksteel if you still have a set for TUUKs. Also since half the blade isn't even metal, you lose out on longevity, especially if you get an aggressive profile like ellipse, zuperior or quad. Spend that $100 on literally anything else.

      @dean4696 Před 2 lety

      they knew what they were doing. its not even Bauer's first time putting two different materials together in a blade. about 10 years ago they came out with the fusion and people split them right across the midline where the two metals joined. while you can obviously create steels with varying compositions that will remain adequately durable/sharpen adequately/retain an edge adequately, probably every metallurgist in the world will tell you how bad of an idea it is to try to join a big chunk of some of some other material or metal to a big chunk of your blade steel.
      I really just think it was a gimmick to try to get their advertised weight down vs the ft4. the funny part is that the new vapors are only like 4 grams lighter when you just weigh the boots and holders sans steel.

      The main issue we found is that the transition to the carbon fiber section is raised and interferes ever so slightly with virtually every skate holding jig we've tried. We've only been able to get good results by sharpening the steel by itself removed from the skate, which allows more clearance for us to clamp it very close to the edge to completely avoid the carbon fiber from making contact with the jig's clamp. It's not an optimal solution though, as the steel gets sharpened down over time that clearance will eventually go away. I feel like they should have caught this in testing.

      The sparx clamp relies on both flat sides of the blade being flat. Spoiler alert, they seldom are. You will need adjustment for most steel mass manufactured today.

    I use to have LS stainless on my vapor x600 but because I’m 1m86 high, I peplace them with the LS3 which are taller than the LS stainless. So now i can lean more when I make tight turns. (I’m French by the way, I hope you guys understand me😅)

  • @beerleaguebumhockeyreviews

    I don’t think Bauer deserves any praise on these. I broke them in only 2 months and crashed into the boards as my runner came right out snapping at the flange. They clearly did not test the strength of the small flanges that mount into the skate. I’m surprised if you are skating on these and haven’t broken them. Bauer and many other companies need more accountability for products like this.

  • @celticstephenhill

    Bauer has already made a multi-material runner over a decade ago called the LS Fusion (aluminum/steel). I burned through the pair that came on my APX skates over the course of about 8 years, and I never understood why they stopped making them.
    They were almost as light as the carbons without the inconsistencies. If they made them again with the knowledge they gained from last time, I'd buy in a heartbeat.

    I personally do NOT recommend these from a pro shop technician perspective. They suck to sharpen and have half the amount of blade for double the price. Once you profile your blade or sharpen quite often, you run out of steel quick! Also, sharpening by hand isn’t horrible but on the sparx it tends to sharpen unlevel. I think for high performance blades, Pulse Ti or STEP Blacksteel are my go to recommendations

    I'm thankful I didn't just order these a month ago and went with the solid mirror finish LS Pulse. I couldn't help but think of the nightmare of the steel separating from the carbon fiber. Maybe when carbon fiber broken and stuck in Tuuk holder 😆 lol? I can't see baking skates with these runners being a good idea either. Also I can imagine a new sharpener (personnel) overheating a blade and ruining the bond between the steel and the carbon fiber. Part of me wanted to trust the latest technology but my own engineering intuition would not let me buy these. Well I do ❤ my Bauer S37 Supremes and am learning to skate in them. Today I will be swapping out Gold Massive Blades (is Massive still in business?) For LS Pulse as I have worn down the Massive Blades to the logo. The LS Pulse look very nice 👌 the mirror finish makes me happy 😊. I really liked the gold Massive Blades and wanted to buy a set in Blue but what happened to Massive Blades for Tuuk Edge holders anyway?

  • @jimmystopspucks

    Funnily enough I worked on a pair of these in my rinks pro shop today and they are an absolute pain in the rear end to sharpen. In my opinion, the weight reduction does not outweigh the draw backs of these runners. They did not do well in the Sparx machine nor did they do well on the grind wheel.

    Doesn't really make sense the way you are describing the sharpening problem, I sharpen skates using a baldemaster and have never encountered this problem, although I've never sharpened these blades, for a blade to become unlevel, it is coming into contact with the wheel either on the top edge more or bottom edge more, it's always human error when blades are unlevel, not sure what's wrong with the Sparx machine unless they were unlevel to begin with, did you cross grind the blades when you first got them?

      Self centering clamps, like found on the sparx and prosharp machines, rely on both flat surfaces being flat. Most steel does not have 2 actual flat sides. This isn't an issue on traditional sharpeners because you adjust for every pair of steel. For self centering clamps, the center point where the clamp works is not the same as the center point where the wheel is.
