      My first DS was a DSi and I was soooo confused as to why games were referring to the lanyard, or why the “DS” track in Mario Kart was looking like that weird thing. I also thought that people saying DS and not DSi were just shorting it out.
      One day a girl came to the playground with her DS lite and I didn’t know what that was, but it was similar to mine, so I, with only good intentions but the grace of a 5 y.o, told her it was fake, and she cried. I then understood that multiple DS existed and we became friends when we grew up a bit lol

      I love some backstories about old consoles, and especially about one I just refurbed. This one was an old yellowed DMG, and I took it apart to find lots of wear on the pads, dust, and finger prints on the outside. That made my day by just know that console was probably their favorite, and never slammed it, as it has not a single dent. I thought how much fun this kid had in the 90s, playing his gameboy with his friends, competing in Tetris rounds, secretly playing at night, I just love the thought.

      I have a story behind my ds lite I originally had a white ds lite that was a hand me down from my brother I played it every day until one day when I was walking up to my dads house I dropped my ds lite and the hinge for the top screen came un attached and I had to hold the screen hinge down to keep the ds on and play without annoyance until I got a new ds lite that didn’t have working trigger buttons and then finally got a original fat ds with working triggers but there was still problems that I had to fix so I contacted a friend to come over and fix the touchscreen he came by with a new digitizer that he ordered from Amazon I played a CZcams video that walked through the steps to make sure he knew what he was doing and make sure he didn’t destroy my ds and he did everything perfectly and saved my ds and now I have a fully working ds again but there is still one problem I need a stylus that can fit in the stylus hole of the fat ds

    Lanyard! Though here's a fact for you, Eliot! The lanyards that originally came with the OG DS systems had a neat little feature! If you look on the lanyard, it has a little bit of curved plastic and an adjuster piece. You can loop it around your thumb and use it as an alternate stylus. AKA: A thumb stylus. PERFECT for playing Metroid Prime Hunters! My older cousin showed me this AGES ago when I had my DS lite and he was an avid Metroid player and was still rocking an old OG all beat up with his own home-made thumb stylus as his had broken long ago.
    I even recall those original lanyards being a bit hard to find because of that very reason! See, I even got the DS lite first as a kid (Well, technically I had the OG for about 3 hours on my birthday, found out the Lite was a thing when going to the store to use my birthday money to buy some games... Traded it in and spent a bit of money so I could upgrade) though a friend gave me her electric blue DS which came with a original lanyard! I was just as stoked getting a cool OG blue DS as I was about the thumb stylus!

    @christophermorin9036 Před 3 lety +7

    Hehehe, the same kind of break happened to my sisters DS. The way I fixed it....was I took a tiiiiiiny drill bit, drilled through what was left of the gray plastic loop from front to back, then I slid fishing line through the holes and looped it around the black plastic hinge and back through the holes before tying it off. Lasted for years until the fishing line wore through, but they aren't using the DS anymore anyway so I'm in to rush to 'fix' it again.

      @@buildinasentry1046 yeah I enjoy the Super Nintendo it was a good system and had great games. I absolutely loved top gear the music the background ect it was a great game. The Donkey Kong games were great on the super Nintendo too. Its nostalgic and brings back memories and now I can play it on my phone.
      Nowadays my phone can run emulators for most old consoles. I have dozens of psp games on my phone and a nice Bluetooth controller. Crank the native resolution to 6-8x and the games look and run great. I can emulator ps1 games. I assume I could play lighter ps2 games but I doubt it could play any serious ps2 game without stuttering. I'd have to give it a try and see but I emulate ps2 on my laptop. PPSSPP is more convenient for on the go emulation. The on screen controls actually work very well and are customizable too if you don't have a controller to use. But a controller really ups the experience. I'd love to buy the razor usb c controller that fits onto the sides of the phone but for now I'm using an Xbox style bluetooth controller with a phone clip and it works well but its not as portable and its not as convenient as a controller that can connect via USB and support mapping for games that don't support controllers.

      Accually, og ds don't work like that. The screen is fine, its what I call the connection cable. There is a separate board that only the OG model had were it connected everything in the top screen to the bottom. All you have to replace is the ribbon cable. If you had a DS lite, then yes, the screen was screwed.

    I was a little too young for the original DS but both of my older brothers had them and actually broke each others' during a fight on vacation. They each took the other's DS and when the older brother threw the first DS on the CONCRETE floor, the second one followed quickly behind. Surprisingly the only damage was to the hinges, both consoles worked fine after and I think we still have at least one of them somewhere in the house. We just used duct tape over the broken hinge, it conveniently almost matched the color of the DS. And yes, we did have the lanyards on them :)

    did this recently with one i picked up that had a totally destroyed hinge that hadnt caused damage to the ribbon yet, the new shells are a must, they used a better plastic so the whole shatter at a glance thing wont be a factor anymore, though getting the hinge together is absolute hell and i forgot to reroute the ribbon back under the foam backing on reassembly but it doesnt seem to affect the functionality, also its worth noting that the new shells have untapped screw posts so initial assembly is a pain
