What are your struggles when vlogging? Did these tips help?
Hey Sam! Great content. Really into your channel. Can you tell what lens is better for vlog with the S5II? And how can I get your presets?
Thank you. I love the 20-60 lens for vlogging or the 16-35 if you have the budget. www.Sam-holland.com for the presets. 🎥🙏🏻🤩 thanks for watching
I've just watched a few more of your videos and it's all very helpful stuff but I makes me realize how much goes into it all and I'm at the very beginning! Thanks for your content, look forward to more of it.
Keep pushing and learning 💪🏻🎥
The "loosing motion blur" is only a camera club/youtube/social media conversation thing. It still looks very natural even at 1/8000 and there's still motion blur. When you stated that part, it became inception that it's not right when it's actually right. When you started talking after you made the speed change, I never noticed anything. CREATIVELY that still works and doesn't really matter tbh. Now I can understand going from 1/60's to let's say 1/15 lol yea THAT is "not right" for a standard shoot unless it's creatively made that way. There's really no right vs wrong in elements of videos... it's about what works for the shot. 1/800 Looks like a clean, non-cinematic documentary style and it's diggable!
This is the video I was looking for. Thank you! 🙏🏻👍🏻
Boom! Perfect. So pleased this helped. There’s also this with more advice too czcams.com/video/B9eKqEC-4SE/video.html
It’s old but still holds true.
Thanks for tuning in 🎥🤩🙏🏻
Great tips mate. These are the kind of really important things that are easy to miss.
Thank you! 🤩 I’m so pleased these tips helped. You’re right. Something I struggled with for ages and wanted to pass on! 🎥
The struggle is real…. The blooming shadows caused by the sun and the greenhouse
Glad to see you giving this a try… I feel like you need to film outdoors to really understand 😀😀
Haha yeh luckily I don’t have a greenhouse to worry about. Maybe pop a sheet of diffusion up when you’re filming? That could help? 🤔
Great video Sam. I haven't seen anyone go into this much detail about how to set your exposure when vlogging outside. I definitely learnt a few things there! I'm also a big fan of the second edition Peter McKinnon filters. The cover for both sides is a game changer. It helps you stop accidentally touch the filters and leaving finger prints.
Thanks bro! I’m pleased this video helped you with a few tips. Appreciate you watching! 🙏🏻🎥📺 ah yeh man. What a great invention! ☀️🔥
This video is so helpful! Thanks
Hey. I’m so pleased this helped 🙏🏻 thanks for watching 🎥🤩
such great tips
Thanks. Glad they helped 🤩🙏🏻🎥
Great advice! If only this came out last week haha. We were trying to work this out on the weekend.
😂 it’s annoying isn’t it! Hope this helped for your future videos… if we get any more sun 😜😂🎥🙏🏻
Hello Sam , thank you so much for your tips , you look so happy with your Lumix S5 ? beautiful place , and beautiful day . have lovely week , like33.
Hi. My pleasure. Thank YOU for watching. Yeh I love the S5! 🤩🎥 colours are so nice. Thank you. Have a good day
Great channel and videos been very helpful. I film myself hiking and vanlife and always struggle with exposure, I dont want to use auto. TY. How do you know how to expose low key low light key lighting, in same a room and you want that gloomy dusk feel, how do you know where to expose at dusk?
Super helpful bro! Thank you. Great vid 📸🎉
If you could only buy 1 nd filter (on a budget) - Link it please mate 😅
Hey. Thanks. I’m pleased you enjoyed it. Probably something like this geni.us/X2vX6U0
Don’t forget to select the right size though 😜🎥
@@SamHolland you, my friend, are one of the good guys. Cheers lad
You’re a legend! 🤩 thank you! My pleasure 🎥🙏🏻

Can we take a minute to appreciate just how crisp the audio is? I had to peel my eyes to see if the dialogue was recorded in a studio and sync up with this video. haha. Well done !
Haha thank you Eugene 🤩🙏🏻🎥 audio presets on my website if you’re interested. And plenty of videos on the channel showing how I set up audio. Thanks for watching and commenting
I think the shutter speed works well ... never tried it before always stuck to the 180 rule but to be honest its not bad after all who waves their hands around like that on a normal day .... cool video and tips buddy 😁😁
Exactly man. Worth a try. I don’t think most people would notice anyway! Especially not when vlogging. It doesn’t matter.
Thanks man. Hope they help 🤩🙏🏻🎥
OOOOOOOOOH you've got the Peter mackinnon filters!!!!!!!!
🤩 yeh they are awesome! 🙏🏻🎥
5:31 just disappear in second. Funny but sadly phone case. 😅 Cool and inspired vid. 🥰😍😅
Great video Sam, thanks for the tips! May I ask what camera and lens did you use to record this? Beautiful quality and colors.
My pleasure. Glad it helped. Thanks for watching. 🙏🏻🎥 ah thanks.
I used the Lumix S5 czcams.com/video/3W1AVKnTw3E/video.html
Got loads of videos on this camera if you wanted to see more.
Thank you 🎥🤩🙏🏻
Just bought a Sony zv-e10. I has face priority in exposure, so as long as the focus can track you it should be setting exposure after your face. You can also see it to expose after highlights, but I don't think you can do both at the same time. But with highlight priority, you might be able to use centre weighted instead of spot, so you don't need be as exact with the position of the spot. Just some ideas to try for those with Sony cameras...
Hi Sam, loving your videos!!
May I ask what focus settings did you use on your S5 while recording this video?
Also do you currently sell the LUT package used in the video?
Hi. Thank you. I’m pleased you enjoyed the video.
I used auto focus continuous mode (c). With human detect area. I have a video on how to set up the S5 and that includes my settings for AF. czcams.com/video/FwXEzWp-_ys/video.html
I use the Panasonic rec709 LUT from the website but then use my LUT packs over the top. From my website. www.Sam-holland.com
I hope this helps. Thank you for watching 🙏🏻🎥🤩
a note for spot metering skin - 0 isnt a perfect exposure, it means 0 variance from middle grey. you'll have to determine where your skin sits relative to that reading.
For your skin, it sits in V to VI range and middle grey is V, so it works here. Here is a reference for other skin types: www.audreyannphoto.com/blog/2015/6/8/spot-metering-and-the-zone-system
I think have the blurry background is important
Q: Focusing - Is it better to zoom as far in as possible on subject, focus then zoom all way out?
Hi Sam, some advice needed. Looking for wide angle zoom lens for my Sony a7s3, looking sigma 14-24 2.8, is the beer belly lens a problem not being able to add variable nd filter , keep up the good videos, cheers
Thank you. I guess having the option of adding filters is always nice since you have more control over your shutter speed. 🎥 let me know what you choose 🙏🏻 and thanks for watching
@Sam Holland, how do you adjust shutter speed on an S5 when your settings is on Shutter Angle?
I use the dial on top of the camera next to your thumb. You can still use 180 shutter or adjust to suit
Hey Sam are you using a lav mic here or just a shotgun mic on top the camera? The audio is definitely crispy and consistent throughout your entire channel.
Hey thank you. I’m pleased you like the audio. I’m just using the shotgun mic on top of the camera. I use my audio presets at www.Sam-holland.com on every video 👌🏻
Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙏🏻🎥🤩
Do you still use your combined polarising/vnd filter from your other video, or do you prefer now to use regular vnd's? Or is it just that the mckinnon vnd is so much better than the K&F one?
I was thinking about this yesterday. I lost my K&F and I wish I had it still. It was a little bulky to use and not very well built like the polar pro but it would be cool to still have it.
I really think that the motion blur thing is a non issue 😊
Do you have any suggentions for cameras without a flip screen? Just go for auto ISO and use spot metering on your face? I'm not exactly sure what metering is. Is that data used whenever you aren't fully manual?
Hi. If you have the budget and can take extra gear with you, an external monitor would help. But if you’re vlogging, i guess you have to film a little clip, then look back and check the exposure before filming the main clips. Check this video which tells you all about exposure and this should help 🤩🙏🏻 - czcams.com/video/e-vav-LDwAg/video.html
Thanks for watching. Let me know if you have any questions
Awesome tips! Do you always vlogging with V-LOG settings?
Thank you. I’m pleased the tips helped 🙏🏻 yeah I always use V log 🎥
@@SamHolland great!
Thank you! 🙏🏻
How about using an autoexposure mode ? Say Tv mode and then let the camera decide aperture ? Or Av mode and let the camera decide shutter speed ?
Alright Bro, if I was outdoors but with a fedora on, what would you suggest?
it's all about experimenting it all out.
what I tend to do when outside in bright sunny day is expose for the brightest when the sun is fully exposed out using ND filter
then set the ISO to auto
So when the clouds come in, the ISO value might jump ever so slightly but when the sun is out the ND is at the right setting too so you will never be exposed
since my Canon R6 does not have aperture priority this is the next best thing if you don't want to fav about using the VND every time the sun plays hide and seek LOL
Hey Abdi. Yeh auto modes are great too. 🎥🤩
Sam, what lens did u use in this vlog?
Hi. I used the kit lens 20-60 🎥🙏🏻🤩
But Sam, at 4:09 you talk about "Dont keep moving arround" but what if you NEED to move arround, lets say i film a car and i have to walk arround that car while filming. Lighting changes, what do you do in that situation?
Not moving around is just for maintaining “perfect” exposure and look. But if you need to move around, you need to move around and that’s perfectly acceptable. If you’re talking and engaging the viewer, it doesn’t matter if the exposure or shadows aren’t “perfect”. Hope this helps 👌🏻
Bro where was this 2 weeks ago hahaha
😂 I’m sure there’ll be plenty more videos to come brother! 💪🏻🎥
Hi Sam,
First of all, I really enjoy your channel and have learnt a lot from you.
But what you say in this video confused me regarding the sunlight position and the subject.
In this video, you say to avoid putting sunlight in direction of the camera lens and from the back of the subject. Also, you say we should always expose on the subject not background. However, in this video: czcams.com/video/B9eKqEC-4SE/video.html
you had said completely opposite of this. 🤷♂️
This video is more for vlogging. Whereas the other video is a more professional approach. When you don’t have much gear to work with, try this way. Exposure is tricky and it’s also subjective after a certain point. Did you try this video? - czcams.com/video/bgQNReMqpOE/video.html
Hope it helps 🤩🙏🏻🎥
