- If I had to create an award for the best houseplant for beginners, the humble snake plant or "Mother-In-Law's Tongue" would win it.
You can pretty much ignore this plant for a month and it will be fine. They have a beautiful and striking appearance in your home, and even remove toxins (benzene, formaldehyde) from your home.
Without further ado, let's get into exactly how to care for, troubleshoot, and propagate the wonderful snake plant.

Hi, Question: Can I use a Coconut Coir as a soil for that kind of a plant? Thanks
Temperature...
Epic Gardening Good day to you,I already have some sanseveria that you showed in this vedeo..it's grown fast, now I bought (dwarf sanseveria obusta) I think that is the name and it is planted in the pot of moss, my question is can I transfer it on ordinary soil? hope you can help me and thanks for sharing ...

I sold my house and bought another one 2 months later so my belongings went into storage while I stayed with relatives. My beautiful snake plant and huge aloe vera went into that locker for two months and I was only able to drop by bi-weekly to water them. They turned mostly yellow and I thought they were done. It only took about 4 weeks of bright light for them both to come back to green and healthy. I was amazed.
Wow, that's incredible !
I have 2 snake plants on the sides of my garage in planters in FULL SUN and I live in the South where it gets extremely humid and the average temp from July to October is 92 degrees. We also have severe thunderstorms where it floods and my sansaveria get extremely drenched and let me tell you, those suckas are full, more healthy than the ones in the house and have grown so tall in 3 mths that I cant believe that they are the same ones I planted 3 mths back. So they DO very well in full sun, heck they do better.
It’s a good idea to let tap water sit overnight, so it has a chance to dechlorinate before you water. I’m happy to know about using African soil mix for Sansevierias! 😀🌱
Yep, that works quite well! Glad you enjoyed the video
Glad to know about the soil. I lost one to the wrong soil before. Going to buy another and start over!
Only video I found in an hour that talks about what to do when a Snake plant leaf tears/breaks. THANK YOU.
You bet!
Lea Belton ME TOO! He’s great...and to the point!!
Planterina is good channel that I learned alot from, too. I really like this channel and Planterina. Pretty much the only gardening channels I pay attention to
I simply love the way you give details of plants... To the point, accurate, genuine and reliable...
Thank you very much
I'm glad I found you. I'm a reformed snake plant killer. ;)
Glad to have you in the community!
Same here , I am serial killer of plants.. first time got snake plants lets see.. :)
How are your plants now? I just bought some today
Imani Newsome its doing really good, I have hold back my urge to repot for sometime now
Been searching and searching for helpful gardening channel - advice is efficient, fun, and well articulated. This is great!
I got one of those cylindrical ones at a rummage sale. I thought it was fake lol. I did eventually figure out that it wasn’t! I love it though! Thank you for sharing
I got a cylindrica snake plant that was purchased from ikea for Christmas. Normally Ikea plants have a very short life span but I had to give this little mo-fu a bigger pot in february cause it outgrew it's small nursery pot. Now it's sitting on my sunny windostill and growing like crazy...I've never actually "cared" for it, I didn't even know it was a snake plant till I fell into the rabit whole that is plant-youtube recently. So thanks for the video, I'm happy to learn more about my little roommate and while my collection is still small I'm afraid I will become obsessed with houseplants now.
It's time to get obsessed, Alice!
I have a snake plant that I call my birthday plant . My mom got it as a gift when I was born. I am 62 years old.
I now, break off a piece and give it to others as a baby shower gift.
No disrespect to your relationship if you're in one, but I could kiss you for making these videos! I'm a complete newbie, and I just got my first set of plants settled in at home. I was using books and information online, but hadn't been fortunate enough to find your videos. You lay it out so simply, and somehow it sinks in better for me when someone's talking me through and showing me things. Other videos lose me very quickly, not getting to the good stuff fast enough, but you kept my attention and told me what I need to know. I know now that I settled my snake plant into too large a pot, but have more confidence that I set the pots up right otherwise. Hopefully the sturdy little dude will handle the extra room if I just take care of him right in other ways. I don't want to shock him by repotting him again too quickly. Another of your videos also gave me the confidence to give my poor spider plant a haircut. My plants came mail order, and the spider plant got a little beat up on the way home. I think I'll do okay with them, now, adding these videos to my list of resources, and I feel like I know better what to watch for to catch problems. Keep the good info coming!
Snake plants are also great air scrubbers and like all succulents good at capturing carbon and therefore helping with global warming. Really enjoyed the video posted about it on my Facebook page about succulents and how they can help with healthier people and healthier planet
Thank you Wendy!

I have a snake plant in a corner of my house that gets no light at all, and it has grown so much. But it does do better in better lit rooms.
Good to hear!
I want to put one in my bathroom but it gets no natural sunlight :(
Ruth Salinas I was at a plant shop today and someone said the same thing about a snake plant. One of the workers at the plant shop said that the snake plant only needs to be watered every 2-4 weeks. So if you want to keep it in a bathroom with no natural light, you can keep it in the bathroom, and then when it’s time to water it, water it, and then place it in a sunny room for day or two so it can get light, and then place it back into the bathroom. I’m not sure if that works. Lol But he said he’s done it before 🤗
Same! Both of mine are on a mantle in a corner that doesn't get very good light at all, and only water them 1x per month. Theyre still growing beautifully and shooting up new babies! I separated 4 babies a couple months ago and gifted them to a family member and I already have more babies shooting up
Ahhh...thank you for the clear, to the point, non wordy instructions!! I’m so glad I subscribed to your channel!🌱🌿🌵😍
I bought my snake plants for two bucks, and it was about a foot tall. It out grew the pot, and moved it into a bigger pot. It out grew that pot, and I transfered it to a bigger pot. It actually busted the next pot when it out grew that pot, I transfered three more times, and now they are six feet tall, and out growing those pots.
Propagation? My nephew visited, and dropped my Smake plant, and it busted into six plants. They all grew into big Snake plants. My cat busted three more, now I have jungle in one room of my home.
Well hell, that tip about the saucer in the bottom might be my issue! Thanks so much - emptied the saucer, re-watered soil, draining now.
Good to hear!
Also, please consider making a video giving us the basics of companion planting. My green thumbed friend explained that it’s like doing the seating arrangement at a wedding for a very dysfunctional family; the key is knowing who likes each other and who doesn’t get along.
I just saved my snake plant from the Walmart! Just re-potted it and hoping it will be able to grow beautifully now!
Good luck!
Ha ha. I've rescued plants from K-Mart. You think the 'Marts take bad care of them so that people like us will buy. I wouln't put it past them. : )
Love rescuing plants!
All the sansevieria varieties are always in direct sunlight in the Philippines where I live and they grow just fine. I mean you could grow a jungle with them really.
Yeah they would do okay there for sure!
True. Hahahah. They just like the temperature in the PH.
Yeah, especially when you plant them on the ground, they just multiply tremendously and become kinda invasive, so it’s better to contain them in pots to regulate their number. My mom planted a moonshine that has really grown so tall , it’s leaves now are so long looking like swords.
True. As much as they are planted directed on the ground and receive direct sunlight in the Philippines, they are also subjected into that much rain during monsoon, therefore they are that much resilient. I can’t even. LOL.
I love these plants, they are beautiful....between these and cast iron plant anyone who wants low care plants can still have great looking plants in their house. Great video!!
Thank you so much!! This is everything I needed to take care of my new plant!
Good luck with your plant baby!
Been looking for this kind of vid, thanks!
Thanks. I am beginning my snake plant journey. Watered it too much and praying it dries out and recovers
Your potting soil recipe for houseplants and for Succulents was exactly what I needed! I wrote down some notes lol!
Glad to hear that!
@epic gardening Thank you for this video. I just received the cutest baby cylindrical Sansevieria and I did repot it and put it near my southeast window. I always have a hard time with Snake plants but so far it's happy, so far.😊
Good luck :)
I love snake plants and having a collection of them. Now I know how to takecare of them , thanks to you for this wonderful info. I liked your shelf or ladder on which you kept the snakes. The snakes on ladder ☺
I'm from Indonesia, watch the video very often I think the plants are very beautiful
Thank you for the info! I have three Snake Plants and I love them!
Nice! Enjoy those babies!
REALLY GOOD presentation! You covered all the important points without any drama.
Thank you, glad you got some value out of it!
Best plant video
Covered every question I had!
Awesome! I’ve had many types and enjoyed them and this Christmas my 5 year old bought me a Dwarf Samurai🤩 So of course I’m geeking out about them & checking out your channel.
I like the all green ones the most-the yellow margins aesthetically aren’t as pleasing but that’s okay! I have a cylindrical one in a big ol pot and the leaves keep growing! They are about 3’ tall 👀 I thought they would have slowed over time. 🌱💚
Great info. You explain very well. Made it easy to understand
My mother-in-law gifted me one of these, hehe xD
Tnk you for your info about snake plants Sir..
well said n explained too...more power!
You actually need to use a long stick (just like you would in baking) to test if the soil is dry. 2 inch isn't enough especially for plants that need to dry out between waterings.
Yes! I agree. I've always thought you should be feeling all the way to the bottom of the pot where the roots are. I use one of those moisture/pH measuring sticks that you can buy from the garden centre.
I love ❤️ your videos they are clear and concise. I am interested in Plants that purify the air. I just bought a Cordyline fruticosa /TI Plant; please do a video on this plant. Thanks!!!!
Hi!
Very informative video! Thank you for sharing.
I have a bunch of Sans; and my plants sit in a succulent and cactus mix to which I added horticultural sand and some gritty mix for better aeration and drainage. And I don't fertilize them, but amend the soil topdressing it with worm castings and some compost. And I avoid using peat moss and prefer coco cuir instead.
But you are right: if you don't kill the plants with liquid love, they are absolutely diehard plants - almost indestructible.
Thanks for your expertise and happy gardening!
Greetings from Berlin, Germany!
Marc
Great info, thanks! Will you do a video on caring for different types of ivy houseplants? Love your channel by the way!
Totally, Ivy is on my list! Thanks for the kind words
1:15 depending on your climate you can actually grow them in direct sunlight as well.
Very true!
What factors would determine growing in direct sunlight?
Kiwani wse
all, they tolerate shade but do best in full sunlight( keep off harsh midday sun)@@youngz13o
Hi I'm new to your Channel I like all the information did you present it thank you for being so straight to the point and simple I really appreciate that I wish you well and I look forward to seeing more of your videos thank you your plants are beautiful

Thank you Susan!
ijust got a birds nest snake plant and iam in love with it..i keep it by a window, although we dont get a lot of sun where its at..but that is ok..should be fine..thanks for the info.
You're welcome!
Thank you for these videos, very helpful. I have a couple of these plants and I may have moved them to a pot that is too large and the leaves over the year have developed a vein like look and feel and droop a bit. I know I have good drainage and I think I'm following the watering guideline with the finger measurement. Lighting is not direct but I do think what they are getting is adequate. Suggestions? Thanks!
Well done, Kevin. I have a pot of snake plant. Thanks 💝
Thanks for the video - I did jut kill off one plant by over watering :-( - I bought another to replace it and hope to keep it alive longer :-)
:)
Thank you for this video. I just bought a snake plant yesterday. 😊
Good luck!
Thank you!
Very nice information thank you sir
"come on, that's a little rude" lmaooooo
I have one next to an atrium window about 3' tall. that I water the 1st of each month.
I'm starting to wonder how much taller it will be able to keep growing straight up w/o bending. Great plant for cleaning the air, looking beautiful and it's so easy to grow. Enjoyed the video.
They'll go for a while w/o bending, but eventually leaves will bend under their own weight
Mine love to be root bound, that’s when they flower. ♥️
Very informative, thanks.
i have tons of snake plants they are my favorite, of all plants, i am addicted to them always have been 40 plues years, so, i cant get enough but i dont keep mine in the dark, i give mine lots of sun, but with the blinds closed, after 12 noon

Cheers, I try to keep it jam-packed
@@epicgardening crisp n clear😀
Snake plants are great to set by the computer, as they detoxify the air. One study found that about 15 snake plants can purify the air of a 1600sf home.
Have had at least 5 different variations and overloved them all. I even successfully cutting propagated one. But alas I killed each one. Now I have 3 cylinder shaped ones of 2 varieties and promise to neglect them a bit. Thanks in advance for your advice.
Thanks for the info. Can you talk about brown spots on Chinese Evergreens?
excellent video,very thorough
Thanks Diane!
Dude you are amazing !!!! So helpful ....thanks much
You're welcome Kristine!
Great easy tips...Thank you :)
You're welcome, thanks for watching
I love snake plants 🖤
I would recommend buying a moisture meter and water snake plants 3 to 4 weeks and make sure they are dry before watering again 😎
Good idea!
YES! GET A MOISTURE METER!! Very smart😊😊
I got a good one thru Amazon, it really helps monitor moisture, light and soil alkalinity/acidity.
Thanks Mr!
I'm from Brazil and in here this plants grow like crazy and don't even need soil to do so, if you leave them in your yard in a pot in less than a month they will take over EVERYTHING. HAHAHAHA
Sansevierias are my favorites, enjoyed this video, thanks.
Agreed, glad you enjoyed!
i just got a snake plant today! she looks beautiful and i hope to keep her alive. i got a terra cotta pot and i think home depot over watered it because the pot is wet on the outside. but i’m here to save her!
That's OK, terra cotta is porous so water will flow 'through' the pot walls
Thank you
gday luv
thank you
I have 3 large..snakes
Sadly I repotted them.
peace lily
corn plant
Hope they're doing well!
I'm glad I found your channel. I just started taking an interest in houseplants. I would love to see more video about different types of houseplants... especially those that are easy to take care of. Also, I have a question please. Our tap water is very hard. Can I use bottle water to water my houseplants?
You're in luck! I just started collaborating with a local nursery so you'll see a lot more awesome houseplant videos soon. I I am pretty sure most house plants will do okay with hard water, as I water mine with 400 parts per million water coming out of my tap but summer more sensitive, like a peace lily Etc
How would they do beside a radiator? What plants would you recommend for beside a radiator?
I love Houseplants and have several which seem to be doing well on a table right by the windows. The lightning conditions are a challenge because the only windows are north facing. Being in a condo, the deeper you go into the room away from the windows the lower the light. I would love to see a video of low light plants and their care.
Check out my recent video on pothos, it can handle low-light! But I will put an entire video up about low light specific plants
Epic Gardening thanks very much. I do have a few pothos and Sansevierias. Will check out the video. Im adding plants slowly to see how the plans do in my environment.
Smart - unlike me who just buys a ton and inevitably loses some hahaha
I hardly ever water my snake plants. I have a habit of killing my plants with too much attention. So i decided to ignore the snake plants and ignore the urge to go go near them now they doing very well.
My snake plant are bind up by rope with some kind of composite instead pot and soil. How should I water them?
I just found a snake plant in the clearance section at Lowe’s! I paid $5 and it’s a pretty good size. One of the leaves is pretty dry but that’s it’s only problem!
Now that's a steal!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Nice video....
Was wondering if you do anything with the Pumpkin vines. And pruning?
I've learned a lot, kuya. :)
My Sansevaria Cylindrica didn't come in a pot, but in something that looks like coco fibers. Should I just keep it in that or repot it into soil?
What about that plant in the back :O ID LOVE TO KNOW ABOUT THAT ONE ON THE SHELF!
Very nice
My snake plant us having yellow patches over leaves .. suggest some precautions steps
Super....cheers!!! love from cyprus
Love back from America!
Please HELP🗣🗣🗣
Hi Kevin!😃
I have just recently bought a snake plant, looks similar to your smaller/chunkier one.
Was just wondering why it is slightly bent outwards rather than going up? I’ve been googling, watching snake plant videos, but I can’t find the reason... you mentioned something about dropping snake plants and the reason for it being a watering issue, is that why it’s slightly bent over like that? What can I do to help it?
Thanks heaps for your content! It’s a massive help 🌿🌱🌵💚
Tg u for sharing..
You can also propagate by cutting the leaves into different parts, it has to be cut horizontally, and stick it in the soil with the bottom ends, it’ll grow roots :))
Yup one of the few plants that can do a split-leaf cutting
Thanks
Can I use coco peat and soil to propagate snake plant? Thank you .
Thankyou
Thanks for the help I just got a couple of golden hanii and I have noticed new babies should I leave them alone until they get maybe 3 or so inches. I don’t want to kill them.
