For what it’s worth, I’ve always watered my Bostons from the bottom up overnight. When the pot feels light, I fill a plastic basin 1/3 full and set the fern in it before I got to bed. In the morning, I place the fern back on its plant stand where it easily drains excess water. Been doing this for 30 years with great success.

Yep wife has always done it that way. Our son had one outside on his steeps dryed brown. Wife soacked pot in a 5 gallon pail and it came back. I lost the bet with her. Lol
Yeah that's the way I've always done it aswell, and I always have a water meter in most of my ferns as I'm an under waterer lol so that stops me from forgetting them

I inherited a Boston fern from my mother (she called it Mr Boston lol). It is over 45 yrs old and has been divided many times. It was the only house plant I ever remember her having. She had the perfect growing conditions both inside and out and it was beautiful. I've had it about 7 yrs now and it's doing OK but not as well as when she had it. It's due to be divided again and I will use your recommendations for the soil mix. Thanks for the tips I hope to keep it going and pass it down to the next generation

Im so jealous. I'm in the Philly area so they have to come inside during the winter. I cannot keep them alive! Plenty of light. Water when dry. I don't get it
I downloaded an app to monitor the rain in the everglades. When it rains in the everglades, I put my ferns in the shower for a few minutes. They are thriving! I do the same with the weather in Phoenix to know when to water my cactus plants. So far it's working out very well.

@@meaganwallwork5395 dont put it in the oven to disinfect it. I did that (I might've had it too long or too hot in there) and it turned brown and super dry

i dont even know anymore it's been yellowish and thin for so long but it's still alive lmaoooooo its drooping so it doesn't have enough light but its yellowish so it has too much?? confusion

I just got two HUGE Boston Ferns from Home Depot and this was the first video I ran into that gave me all the things. Thank you!!
Two years ago we moved and now practically live in the woods. Lowe's had a clearance rack with dying Boston Ferns, big ones, very brown, for $3.99. And I thought, what the heck so I bought 2 of them and put them outside. We get very little sunlight because of all the trees around but we also had ferns growing wild all over the place. I took them out of their pots, transplanted them into bigger pots, added some fresh potting soil, watered them, let them get rained on and sat back waiting for them to die. Little by little they began growing new fronds and by the fall they looked like something you'd pay $50.00 for! They were huge, gorgeous! I brought them into the garage for the winter and someone left the garage door open where they got blasted with icy cold temps, of course they died soon after. This year, 4 new clearance ferns for$3.00 each and they've done the same, tripled in size and are lovely. I'm going to bring them in the house where they will likely perish before they can make it back outside next spring. Wish me luck!

Ferns are very resilient. I have had a few come back too.
Get a shallow dish like a pie dish, add little pebbles put water in it and put your plant in the water. This keeps the humidity high until they go back out for the summer

Gotta always be on our toes (especially in the summer ☀️ ), a lot of watering & 1/2 to midweek watering schedules, turning of plants/ rotation, & so on right! Our climate where I’m at closely resembles that of a rainforest minus the “choppy canopy” due to homes😄!! Hot & Humid! Anyhow good luck with everything! I hope you are able to shut your Fern Morgue down for good🌱💚
Me too, why is it so hard? My grandma had one that was just lovely and then my mom had it. Our cat gave it a bowl cut but it still lived for a long time. I cannot keep one alive.

I live in a very cold part of Canada and my Boston fern has to put up with constant furnace heat on for months. It gets dry looking leaves with scraggly tips. I set it on a tray of pebbles with water underneath them and I do spray it with water twice a week. I water it quite often. In the summer it goes onto my front door step in a sheltered nook and does a lot better. It gets some rain water and filtered sunlight. It really recovers and looks great.

@@Mrieekk After desperately trying to save it, I gave up on it and left it to die, but my mother got a hold of it and gave it a massive haircut! She trimmed off ALL the dead bits, about 90% of the plant... 2 months later and its doing great! It's becoming bushy and it looks super healthy!
Just lift it = knowing how much water it needs... this is exactly what I wasn’t looking for.
Stick your finger in the soil, if one bend of your finger in the soil is dry, water it, or get a moisture metre

Mines on the front steps and sun does hit it for a like bit and it’s growing beautifully. I water about 2 cups a day. I have not felt the soil but it also got rained on several times. It looks great though.

My Boston Ferns are thriving! I water really well with a hose, making sure that every part of the soil is drenched. I also sprinkle water on the top Green Layer. I place it outside in indirect light. I do this every other day at least. My Boston fern loves water because it gets hot and humid here.
You do an excellent job of talking/ teaching and working at the same time. It's surprising how many people are not able to do that.
I know I’m late to the party, but just wanted to say I am one of those who cannot multitask worth a poo. So I too appreciate this man, his plant wisdom and ability to execute what he’s saying!

I have one that’s about 1/10th of this size. It’s cute. I have it literally on top of a humidifier and it’s loving it. It’s about doubled in size in four months or so. I’m looking forward to it being as massive as this one.

Great video thank you my boston fern is about 3x's the size of yours. We had a early start with winter here in st. paul. she got a bit burned by the cold - I bring her outside for the summer. She is slowly back in her indoor garden spot. Humidity is a factor. I have about 15 different fern varieties I grow in my old Victorian House basement. No heat but it stays at the coldest 65f (when it's -40 outside) to about 72F. My indoor garden is actually little furnaces that keep it the rest of the gang warm. I do moisture spray with my "PETRA" sprayer to keep average around 50% - we don't like mold! It's wonderful during the winter because I go into my Tropic flowering mancave after working outside in -40 degree weather. I'm growing oranges, limes, lemons, bananas, 4- types of passion fruit etc in my basement. My winter tropical garden is about 1200 sqft with lighting with LED Daylight/kelvin in shop lights and bulbs. My power usage is only 500 watts. You don't need those expensive power hunger LED lights unless you might be growing the other stuff . This is my 4th season the experiment paid off so much that my garden grew another 100%. FYI If your going to introduce plants in Quarentine them and treat the soil.

Empress, my 4' Boston Fern, was difficult to move this summer, even though 9 doors down, because of winding up all her runners & placed them into 6 med/large containers. Waiting until it's cooler to change her soil. She gets less sun than the other place, & she & my African Violets love their nightly misting, helps them to grow bigger! If you doubt misting: My 3 biggest African Violets were 35" - 37.5", under perfect humidity and lighting conditions. Ferns & Violets grow great together!
I have a bunch of African violets but heard you shouldn't spray them because they don't like it! Now I'm curious to try!
Are your violets indoors in pots? I’m surprised they like misting, since their leaves are fuzzy and hold water which can cause fungus. I tried misting one of mine a couple times a week and the leaves rotted &turned black. Everything I read says to water from the bottom or soak and don’t get leaves wet. Of course, I don’t know how one can do that if ground planted. But congrats if yours are good with it. 😊

I usually bottom feed my potted plants,....
by misting the surface to moisten the top, then I pour food/water into a feeding tray and allow the plant to take up whatever i wants...this uses 2-3 times the amount fed from the top. ( it wont work if you dont wet the top or most top soil first, as it creates a seal that stops the soil from having dry spots)

I wish these guides could be simplified and more visual, someone talking and describing things to me doesn't really register. It'd really help if they'd show me what they're talking about and and how to do it!
I don’t have any Boston’s, but have 4 Kimberly ferns. The one right in front/touching of a north window has tripled since I bought it. One is 6 feet from south window hasn’t grown a lot, but is happy. I have the other two 6 feet from a north window and they’re surviving but definitely have a lot of browning and dropping leaves. I thought maybe it might be low humidity but this is a Great reminder they need more light than one may think.
The diving and repoting and with what soil to use has been tricky for indoors. Thank you your plants look amazing
I live in sc and my boston ferns do great in full sun in the humid hot weather in the summer. I bring them inside early winter before temps reach freezing and put them back out mid spring I've never had problems

My daughter placed her ferns outside under trees. She never watered them and had the attitude that if they survive then great. Well, living on Hilton Head Island they survived really well. Now I have them and am moving to East TN.

Please tell me how you take care of it. I was able to keep one fern alive in my house until February and it only had 8 fronds and it looked terrible so I cut them all back and it died.

From my awning covered deck I will be bringing in a Boston Fern grown from a baby this summer to now a sizable fern. I will try your method to preserve it in our bathroom over the winter. Thanks for this informative video. You explained the procedure so thoroughly (and well spoken)

I bought it last year and planted on the soil in our backyard. It got scorching heat anhd high humidity during hot summer in Houston, Texas. It grew just awesome!!! Huge, dark green and fresh! I watered over almost everyday!
I'm in Victoria and I'm pretty sure I fried my in this heat 😫😫 I wonder if I can revive it.

I have two Boston Ferns that I got from the home center last spring. I hung both plants under the eve of my covered front porch. They looked great and added some nice curb appeal to my home. Soon, several house wrens nested in the plants over the summer which made it very difficult to water. When the weather started getting cooler, I left them outside too long. They have since been inside and the birds are no longer an impediment. Now they both look scraggly. There are two or three healthy new shoots but the surface of the soil is just a tangled mess of dried fronds. I have cleaned up all of the dried and dead fronds but the cut stems in the soil remain. Is there any hope for saving these two plants? If so, What should I do to revive them?
I do the dunk until no more air bubbles come out then set it on a screen table and let the extra water stop coming out then I hang them.

I soak one up to the soil level in a small tub or container, for about an hour. Lets the entire root structure start to absorb.
Key word, for watering: Moderation!
Just bought one yesterday. Plan on putting under a deck facing south. Hope it likes it. I like to summer my plants outside in summer. They love the humidity. I love in central Iowa.
If they call it Boston Fern and it cannot live in Boston because it's a tropical fern then they have already set the fern for failure.

I have always believed what you said about the amount of sunlight they require. I have been hanging Boston ferns from my front porch west facing. A ton of hot afternoon sun. I have to water every day and sometimes 2 times a day. They got HUGE and beautiful.

I wanna see you chop and prop this bad Larry:) I've got some pieces of overgrown award ferns overwintering in my raised beds and I've got a couple more in ground I need to divide this spring. I've seen some completely cut all folliage back in early spring for a refreshed plant. I would only maybe do this to my outdoor ferns. My indoor hanging ferns are perfect, but getting too big so I definitely want to divide them also into more manageable hanging pots this spring. Thank you for all your helpful vids!

Hey Kevin, I live in Bolivia, South America in the tropical lowlands, an ideal fern climate. In fact recently we took our children to a fern forest with where we hiked into the the area of 2,000yr old ferns-amazing! My ferns live outside, in indirect sun. They have a white powder at the crown/ base and leaves are turning brown. I read through your web post and could not find this particular issue? Do you have an idea what this is and how I might rid the plant of it? Thanks for your help.

I’m here because my fern is drooping and looks sad. Yes it’s my first ever plant haha. EDIT...that’s a lie my first plant is a cactus ive had him for years he’s doing so well I love him 😭♥️ He’s like 12 inches long I think or 13 maybe. So the fern is my second plant :) I can’t wait to be a plant mum🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴
I just discovered this amazing video, and wish that I had seriously done my homework on ferns, a few years ago. I love ferns as much as pathos, and ivy plants but they are very tricky to grow in climate temperatures that vary drastically. I'm in California where it gets really hot, and that makes it difficult.
