I've used 1Tbsp Epsom salt to 1 gal water on my ferns every few weeks. They seem to love it. My ferns were so big!
That’s awesome! I’ve heard about Epsom salts but haven’t tried it. Maybe using that would help kill those dang worms. Lol! I might have to give it a try. Do you fertilize them also or just only use the Epsom salts?
I use Epsom Salt too. I mix Miracle Grow, Epsom Salt and worm casting concentrated “tea” all in the same gallon and water that way. Amazon has the worm tea.
Here’s another tip. Take the same gallon of miracle, Gro, Epson salt and worm tea freeze it in ice cube trays. (Yes they still make those lol) and then lay the cubes in your pots but not near the roots and just let them melt and it will make watering so much easier.
I put banana, orange, lemon peels in a blender, add a few cups of water, grind everything into a slush. Work it into the soil, water well. My ferns are GORGEOUS!!!!!! I do this 3xs a year. GORGEOUS, all natural, no bugs or chemicals.
Good to see you Tam! Lovely ferns. Thanks for the care and growing tips.
Our Vintage Store thank you! Your welcome☺️
I watched your other video when I first got my fern in May 2020 and as of today my fern is very big. I only water it and mist it. When I first got it I would put it in the shower and let the steam settle on it. I love growing them and want to get another one ASAP bc of the success I’ve had with this one. Thank you Tam
B. Christine yaaa! That’s awesome!! I’m so happy I could help☺️Mine are getting really big too! I’ll have to do an updated garden tour soon😉
So happy to hear about her upcoming content. I hope all is well with your family. Take care!
Thank you! I hope you’re doing well too!☺️
I use miracle grow as well! Never once have I thought to put it all in a large ziplock!🙄 What an easy, simple tip! Thanks Tam!
Kim Everhart thank you!☺️
Well Holy Crap! I live in the Southern states and yes I have this problem but not one soul has EVER told me what this was. I knew that ferns reproduce by spores so I didn't figure they were seeds but had a clue they were some kind of pest droppings but never seen any on the ferns. I have lost about all my ferns like this for about 20 years and I have asked people and the same answer comes back. "I don't know what it could be," has all ways be told to me. I never get mine eat like you said but it is killed before the leaves get eat I guess. And today I found your channel and get the answer. No now I know and I know what to do about it now. I have just stopped buying ferns for this reason. Ferns are my favorite house and outdoor plant but I kill every one I get or so I thought it was me. Now I know it isn't. Thank you Tam from the bottom, top and all in-between of my heart. You see, When people post videos like this and I know a lot of my friends thinks no one gets any good from them but they do. Everyone else might have known bout this but i didn't and I still wouldn't tell I seen this video. I am a fan now and going to watch the rest of your videos for more helpful tricks and information. Again THANK YOU.
Arbear64 I completely understand how you feel! Don’t you hate it when you can’t find an answer to something, and then when you finally do it’s such a relief! I’m so happy I could help and thank you for watching!🥰
Glad you are back. Looking forward to seeing what you have in store.

I knew exactly what you were going to say about the caterpillars. I live in Alabama. We also have a time with a certain beetle on our other plants. You have to stay on top of your plants or in days they will die. Glad your back! HUGS!!! STAY WELL!!!
kathy beck yes! Those dang caterpillars! I hope I have good luck with these ferns this year, so far so good😃
Those are called Japanese beetles eat the leaves over plants eat the the blossoms of your flowers
You are so sweet and informative thank you for sharing this video!
I just explored the woods across the street from my house and took a few cuttings of Fern since it was abundantly everywhere, so beautifully combined with the other plants- it looked like a fairy forest!!!!
I’m in south Florida and there’s a lot of construction happening in my city. I always wanted to know what it looked like in the lot across from me... before someone buys it and they tear it down like they did the last few lots in my neighborhood😕 so I went on an adventure with my brother and I’m so glad I did!
Anyways I really enjoyed my time watching and learning from this! Thanks again!!
Awww you’re so sweet! You’re very welcome and thank you for watching🥰I bet those woods were just magical with all those ferns!
Beautiful ferns,, I try to have at least two each year and miracle grow is all I use as well. Can't wait to see more videos .

thanks for the video-Love the huge ferns
Joella Martin your welcome! Thank you!☺️
Ferns here in Florida are just about considered a nuisance plant, especially if they are growing in the ground, they spread like crazy. That might not be such a bad thing, but snakes can hide beneath the fronds. But, some people here do still grow them in planters.
Lisa Uptagrafft I think the Boston ferns are best in hanging baskets because the fronds droop and get so long. I do have ferns in the ground but they’re the upright kind, so nothing slithery can hide under them!😂There’s so many plants that grow in the ground in Florida that I would love to grow in the ground here! I have ponytail palms in pots and use to have a sago Palm, but lost it😞
I just had two of my Sego palms cut down! I hated them, they hurt so bad if you get pricked by them, one of the lawnscapers let out a few choice words when he was pricked! I do like the ponytail palm, though. Have a safe and happy day! 🤗🌺
Tammy I once went to water my fern with a mason jar of water and a little wren flew in the jar ! Surprise! They seem to like to settle in mine at night. Good tips, thanks!
Judi Wills yes! I have to watch mine like crazy when I first get them! The birds are all over them trying to nest😂
I love the farms. Thanks for the video CZcams sister ❤🖒 xoxox stay safe and bless and strong and positive much love from me xoxox

Very nice work
Rhank you gor tgis video. I am yrying to be a plant mom and all the ferns i have bought have died in this manner. I have two new ones that ive had for a month and this is exactly whats happened to them.
Thank you Tam for all the information on ferns. Your ferns are beautiful . I have never had ferns before, but recently bought 2. I hope I don't kill them. They are turning yellow, so I will try your tips. Thanks again.
I hope you have good luck! Thank you for watching!🥰
Gorgeous ferns!
Elizabeth thank you!🥰Ferns are one of my favorite things to grow, as long as they don’t have those dang caterpillars!
Beautiful ferns ❤️ yes live sale!!!
Jennifer Atkinson thank you!😉
Hiya Tam, this was a superb tutorial. I really enjoyed it, and it was very helpful thankyou. I live in Lancashire, England, and we get lots of wet weather and very little sun. So my ferns thrive well. I was thinking of dividing them at the root ball so that I can use them for ground cover. My friends love my garden as it leads to an upward slope and it's at the slope where I have planted all the shrubs and fern. They tell me that my garden looks like a Japanese garden, so I am happy and thrilled with the outcome of my landscaping attempt.
Thank you for watching and I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Your backyard sounds so beautiful! Thank you for sharing☺️
I love this video! It was sad - I couldnt keep my house and don’t have the room for my plants!
Joann Dickerman Thank you! awww, I’m so sorry😞
Love ferns too. Be well. 😊🇨🇦
Would enjoy content on Crafting. And I've heard you mention doing baby baskets in previous videos - would love to see you putting one together. Cooking and gardening sounds good too, while you're waiting for the ability to go thrifting again. Love your videos!
Anono Mous thank you! Doing new content will be a challenge, but I think I’m up for it!😉 I made a video a while back putting a baby basket together, but I may do another one! Thanks for the suggestion😊
Thank YOU for the good information.
You’re welcome!😊
Indeed happy memory good impressive ...i have grown this plant
Its good to see you. I was just thinking about you.
Paula Jarman 🥰
I just got a fern thank u for the good information god bless
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching!☺️
You are an Angel💕
I’m in Kentucky too! I just purchased two Boston ferns. I have no clue what I’m doing lol thank you for the info! I have them hanging on my front porch, but now looking for another place. My front porch gets a lot of direct sunlight
Hello neighbor! You definitely don’t want direct sunlight. I great place, is a porch or patio facing east, that way they can get a little morning sun, but no full or afternoon sun. I hope they do great for you!! Thank you for watching!☺️
I was just thinking of you yard sales and estate sales 😊😊😊😊🌺
Sue ojeda thank you!🥰
Thanks for the video.
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching!☺️
Mine are from Huntersville NC a nursery there who sells to Lowes . We just pur back into the hard container the MG comes in.
Hi, thank you for the good info, could you let me know if the same advice apply for winter months? Thank you again. 😃
Mrs. Velasco Hi! I don’t bring mine in for the winter, but if you do you may not have to water quite as much and I would stop the feeding through winter also😊I hope this helps.
Love your ferns
Zlatinka Quinones thank you!☺️
New subscriber today, this video is what I been looking for, I stopped buying ferns for this reason. The caterpillars were destroying them, nothing worked, now I know to be careful where I purchase them from, but what can I use to kill the catipillars
Thank you, Tam. I may buy a couple of ferns this year for a change. My problem is, I have to bring them into the house in the fall and I simply don’t have room. Maybe I will rehome them.
Cynthia Amitrano I just pitch mine at the end of the season and buy new ones the next year. I’ve tried over wintering them and they just make a mess😏I look at it like if I were buying an annual flower or plant just for the season😊although I have rehomed mine before. I gave them to someone wanting to decorate with ferns for a wedding😉
Tam's Place you are right about the mess. This is why I don’t have them in my house now. I have a problem throwing living plants out. I’ll rethink that. Thank you for the great advice. No weddings coming up. I’ll put them on the boulevard after the season and let someone else worry about them.
It’s great that you’re warning people about the caterpillars. I’m in NC, and I just got my first Boston Fern last month, and today, I threw it away:( Unbeknownst to me, it was being eaten away by these caterpillars for the last month, and I couldn’t understand the “seeds” (caterpillar droppings) that I kept finding all over the floor. Finally, I found and got rid of one, then two, then three caterpillars, and I thought I was in the clear, but I found what I believe to have been the first moth by the base of the plant last night. Maybe someday I’ll be brave enough to try ferns again (from the North lol), but I don’t think I’d dare have them indoors because of this exact problem. I can’t shake the fear that they’ve built some kind of nest inside my home🤢
When using fertilizer, do you fertilize the soil only or the actual ferns as well? I just want to make sure I do it right. Thanks!
Only the soil. Thank you for asking!☺️
I love your ferns.
Thank you☺️
I’m excited to try this I bought a Boston fern for my back patio, they are out now around my area I’m from NC, which it’s still cold outside I don’t think we’ve even had our last frost. Can I still go ahead and feed it with the schedule you’ve provided even tho it’s not to hot outside yet? 😊
Absolutely! Just remember to bring it in if there’s a hard frost coming. Also be on the look out for the fern worm!
Wow.!!😠... I hate that.
I live in Tennessee. Ive got a few ferns and I don't think I've had this little bug.but I will be keeping my 👁Y👁s out for them now..
Thx so much for that little bug info.
I love how big & beautiful your ferns are.
Yea, it’s stinks, but I think they’ve actually migrated more north. We purchased our ferns locally and they still had the worms😏Because they’ve become so prevalent here I’ve decided to only get one fern next year and do something different with my other two hanging baskets.
I think the I-65 Vendor Mall in Elizabethtown will be opening about May 22nd. Check them out!
Maryellen P thank you! They’re pretty far from me, but I’ll remember that if I take a picking road trip this summer!😃
I very much enjoyed your advise. Bought my first Boston fern in nearly 40 years a month or so ago from a grocery store. We live in the south but I haven't noticed any catapillar droppings. It's already nearly doubled in size with just watering and MG a few times. My question is, do they get so big to a point they need to be relocated to a larger pot than the one from the grocery store? TIA
Thank you for your question. I suppose they could, but ferns like to be somewhat root bound. I’m not sure how far south you are, but if you can keep the fern all year round then at some point you may need to repot it. Here in Ky I treat mine as an annual, so it never gets to that point. As long as it’s flourishing and doing good I’d keep it in the same pot, but if you think it needs to be repotted, I’d take a picture of how big it is and ask someone at a local nursery. I hope that helps.☺️
@@TamsPlace Thanks so much! I will keep it in the same pot then. I didn't realize they like to be root bound. And I love the misting idea! We are in South Carolina. My husband is originally from Blain Kentucky 😊
@@judimigliore1077 that’s awesome! If you have any more questions please feel free to ask! I’ll help you as much as I can☺️I’m not familiar with Blain Ky, but there’s many counties and cities I don’t know about, and I’ve lived here pretty much my whole life, Lol.
Hello. Great Video! Do you ever have what appears to be "fern poop" or (green or black)
droppings of some sort that start out soft that fall from the ferns throughout the season? I'm trying to figure out what it is.
Teresa Brooks yes, that’s the fern caterpillar poop. Check your ferns very closely! Sometimes the worms are black and sometimes green, they’re very hard to see, but if you have those droppings underneath them, I’m sure there’s worms in them😞
@@TamsPlace Yes....sad to say....I found some...actually several. I'm going to try Neem oil to if that takes care of it. I live in Jacksonville Florida and purchased them at Lowes around April. They have done so well and then this happens. :-(
New subscriber,im from Tennessee
Hello there neighbor! Thanks for subscribing☺️
Do you immediately repot yours or keep them in their original pots? I’m struggling with mine and wondering if they need bigger pots? They hang.
No, I don't repot them. Ferns love to be rootbound, but not so rootbound that there's hardly any soil.
So when you fertilize and you use the 1 &1/2 of tbsp of the fertilizer and the water, do you use all the water to water the fern?
Yes ma’am. I water them until the water runs through the bottom. If there’s any left I just use it on other flowers😊
Miss you and Scott going to sales, sad what is going on hope to see you on the road again
Tip of the mitt thank you🥰I hope we can get back out there too!
Your f Ernst are gorgeous. I have great luck with Boston ferns too, believe me, I don't know why , but I just wondered about overwintering? I tried once and they didn't love it! I'm in The midwest. Thanks
Thank you! Yes, I think you can overwater them. They like the soil to be consistently moist but not soggy or saturated.☺️
Hello Hunty 👋🏻 from British Columbia Canada
Hello!😃
New sub. Thank you so much.
Shirley Ramey thank you!! Welcome to my channel☺️
Hello! I’ve always been pretty successful growing ferns. This year I bought Kimberly Queen ferns because my new place gets afternoon sun on them. I’m wondering how big they can get? My Boston ferns I got them huge. I want these to get massive as well. I did buy them as pretty mature size already.
I believe that take pretty much the same care as Boston ferns, so they should do great for you and get huge!☺️
Does this care apply to a Kimberly queen fern as well? Thanks so much for your info! :)
Actually I’m not sure? This video is just for the Boston Fern. You’re very welcome☺️
How often do you water with the MG mix? Sorry if I missed that in the video.
I fertilize with MG about once every two weeks.
Do you have any idea when Kentucky will start to open I live in Wisconsin and the whole state opened this past week I know good wills are open. Nice to see you 😊
Sue ojeda we’ve started opening here pretty much, but no one is having garage sales yet😞I’m hoping they’ll start up soon!
How do you winterize your ferns? I’m in East TN & get quite a bit of cold/snow weather.
I’m in Ky and I don’t overwinter. I just buy them for the season. Usually purchase in April and they’ll last here until mid October or November depending on the weather, then just toss them. I treat them like an annual😊
Hello! I'm watching your video in hopes of saving my ferns that I think died from the frost we had here in Houston. They were so big and beautiful last year. Now they are completely brown, even though we covered them. Is there any hope for them or should I just buy new ones?
Aw dang😏I hate that for you. Since they’re all brown I’d say they are goners and you’ll probably need to buy new ones. Thank you for watching☺️
@@TamsPlace I figured as much. :( Thank you!
So when we are ready to go purchase our ferns what and where on the plant do we need to be looking for?
Will we see the black dots on new plants instantly?
Unfortunately you won’t see any signs for a few weeks until you start seeing the little black dots/pebbles under where your ferns hang. I have a new video coming out soon about what to look for and how to combat these pests!😉
Is there anything I should look for to be sure to get a healthy plant 🌿 to start off with?
I live in Wisconsin, so we have very cold winters. This past fall, I brought my fern inside to try to keep it alive. It’s only about 40% green so I put it outside now (warmer weather is finally here). I would LOVE to grow one as beautiful as yours. Any suggestions?
Just keep it watered, fertilized and in a shady spot and the one you wintered over should flush out and be beautiful😊
@@TamsPlace Thanks so much!
How much do you mist your ferns? Until they are soak or just on the dewey side? I just bought a couple of ferns and I think I better invest in one of those Roundup container for misting because I had end up getting a cramp on my hand with that trigger spray....lol By the way I also love thrifting and crafting. I love your channel! Thank you for this helpful information on the ferns.
Awww, thank you so much for watching!☺️I try to mist them not soaking but a little more than dewey, if that makes sense? Lol. I try to mimic what they might get naturally in the rain forest. I hope that helps😊
Sure have missed my favorite WILDCAT fans!
Awww🥰Thank you!
i adore you! this is such a wholesome video, subscribed for more plant care videos
Awww, thank you so much!🥰
I love ferns but I’ve lost the two I’ve bought. They always dry out on me! 😢 I wonder if they had caterpillar eggs on them. 🤔
Upon further listening I think I fried them in the sun and didn’t give them enough water lol 😬 I will have to try a 3rd time! Thanks for the tips! 🤗
Nesting Haven Nicole yes, definitely give them another try! I don’t bring mine inside to winter over, I just buy new ones each year for the season😊
Look into a Mantis Tiller. Had mine for years and is great for small areas
Karyn Roeseler yes, scott looked into getting one but the sales guy told Scott that the newer ones aren’t as good and don’t hold up as well as the older models, so we’re looking for a used older model😉
I am also from KY and been thinking about buying a fern. Im just trying to get a little info. I want to just have as a house plant not have it outside. Are they easy to take care of in the house or do i need to put them outside? Thank you neighbor for the video.
You can care for them inside, but they drop so many fronds during the winter months, they make a mess. When I made this video I was still buying Boston ferns, but every time I buy them they have those Florida fern worms and I got tired of fighting them. I haven’t bought Boston ferns for two years now for that very reason, and it doesn’t matter where I buy them, they always get the worms☹️I need to do an updated video, Lol!
Thank you
Hi Tammy! I’m in KY too. Mount Sterling. Where do you buy your ferns?
Well, I use to get them at Louie’s on Harrodsburg Rd. & Tates Creek Rd., but I started seeing those fern worms, so I stopped. I bought some the past two years at Locust Trace school in Lexington and they’ve had the worms too. My guess is the worms have adapted to this area, so this will be the last year I’ll buy ferns😞
When and how do you take care of them durning the winter?
Payton Wilson I don’t, they make too much of a mess dropping leaves, so I just treat them like an annual and buy them new each year😊
Do you move your ferns indoors in the winter? Garage or house?
I don’t, I just treat them like annuals and buy new each year. I can get a good 7-8 month growing season where I am. I tried to overwinter in the garage one year, no luck☹️and I tried in the house one year, but they were sooo messy!
I wish I could grow these here in the desert.
I have two huge macho ferns as well. It looks like your ferns are in the sun? I would love to put mine out by the fence like you have yours. Help. Also I’m in Coastal Foley, Alabama.
I hope your ferns are doing good! I don’t keep the ferns here, I just put them out by the fence to show how big they get. I keep them in the shade.😊
What do you in the winter with the ferns do you just bring them in or do they die
@@gracemessageministries2881 I’ve tried bringing them in, but they’re just too messy, they drop fronds all winter. I just toss them at the end of the season and buy new ones the next year.
@TamsPlace ok thank you so much have a blessed day my love
Hi there! I'm new to your channel. I am a plant LOVER! I too grow massive Boston's! You are the first person I've ever seen grow ferns the size of mine. So this year I added some Queen Ann I think is what they called. They sit opposed to hanging. I bought 3 for my front porch. I treated them the same as my Bostons. Water daily, spray and fertilize with miracle grow. And let me tell you they are MASSIVE and absolutely beautiful. Every single person that has come over is big eyed and blow away at size and beauty. I will be sad when they go with the weather. I just don't have the room to bring them in along with all my other plants for the winter. You should ck them out next year. I know you would love them and will do just as good as your others.😊
kimmy kakes thank you so much for watching! I believe I’ve seen the Queen Anne ferns and would love to have a couple, but I have so many indoor plants that I bring out in the summer I don’t think I’d have room for them on my patio. Well, now you’ve got me thinking where I can put one🤔I may have to break down and get one next year, Lol! Thank you for suggesting them!☺️
What kind of baskets do you use for your ferns?
I just use the baskets they come in when I buy them😊
i have had the worst time getting rid of a couple of song birds that like to destroy my hanging plants. particularly my ferns. i used repel all and omg it stinks and killed my petunias! i have tried all the pinterest ideas to get rid of the birds and nothing is working. any ideas?
I just keep watch and if I see them trying to build a nest, I just pull everything out that they've put in so far. After I do that 2 or 3 times, they eventually give up and go away. You just have to keep a watch on them until nesting is done.
Tam's Place i've been doing that . but they break the follage! makes me so mad and it's such a pretty sounding song bird. wonder if i built them a nesting box?
I have a caterpillar problem on my moonflower. Every year this thing...these things eat that thing down in a week. I finally started watering every other water with insecticide soap and so far do good. This year it’s just now coming up so I’m getting the soap water ready. Darn bugs! 😡
Elizabeth I know, right?!! I hope you have good luck this year, I’m crossing my fingers for my ferns too! Thank you for watching!☺️
hey tam , WOW. you ever grow ferns indoors ?
No, not the Boston ferns, they drop their fronds and are so messy to bring in, in the fall☹️
Please do a live sale! So do you buy new ferns every year?
Terriann's Eclectic This and That I’m seriously thinking about it, if I can get Scott to help me! Yes, I buy new ones each year.😊
I see that you are only misting the leaves with the miracle grow solution, and you do that every two to three weeks. Do you water them first if needed, and then mist them
I try to mist the leaves with just water every 2-3 days or more if I think of it. I fertilize the soil every 7-14 days, I think that’s what it says on the miracle grow package. It doesn’t really matter what order you mist or fertilize.
@@TamsPlace Ok. Thanks!!!..so the miracle grow only goes in the soil, and not on the leaves..just mist with water... that's where I was a little confused..will be heading to Walmart tomorrow for the miracle grow...🤞wish me luck🤗
@@DonnaB1 yes, that’s right! I hope you have great luck!☺️
Just what I Experienced..
Mine were "being stripped"- so, I Dusted them with GARDEN SAFE Diatomaceous Earth, Used Coat hangers to make a 'canopy', And Covered them with a cheap old gauze curtain for about 7-10 days.
- I wanted to bring mine indoors- So I wasn't Risking bringing in any kinda of Bugs riding in.
~> They've done really well..
Bonnie J thank you so much for the fern tips! If I have problems in the future, I’ll have to try that!😊
OMG... this is SOOOO me! I just bought a fern and we couldn't figure out where these black moths were coming from inside our apartment! Then I noticed something stripping my fern... then I noticed the black caterpillars! So I'm going to try your diatomaceious earth. How much do you use? ANY HELP you can give me will be SOOOOO appreciated. (I'm also in Kentucky!)
Hello from Germany 🙋♀️
Hello there!😀
Can I use my compost to feed my ferns?
I’ve never used compost, so I’m not sure? I’ve only used miracle grow. I’m not sure if compost would burn them?
@@TamsPlace I usually grind a little up and add it to the top soil of my roses and then water well, wasn’t sure if it would work for my ferns also
Is misting better than if I water over them ?
You still want to water them in the soil, but they also love that fine mist on the fronds😊
@@TamsPlace I mean to pour the water over the leaves…. when I water them.
@@aprilepp74 you can do that, but like the fine mist much better. It’s more like their native habitat where they grow in the rain forest.
