Years ago, some kid posted a video of his grandpa running a (I think) late '50s IH with a 2spd/brownie/4spd combo under load. It was amazing. That guy was shifting gears CONTINUOUSLY, going up and down hills. It was almost hypnotic, watching him run all of the gears. I guess that's what drivers had to do when they only had about 300lbs of torque to get the job done:)
