    • @krisspkriss
      @krisspkriss Před 19 dny +3

      It is highly likely they are laying off right now. You need different people with different skill sets as a project progresses through the pipeline. This close to release, you might not need as many graphics designers and script writers. On the other hand, you will need more people with experience developing netcode. So they might lay off 600 this week, but hire 400 the next... just different people with different skills. When GTA 6 is released, there will be a massive churning again, with more people fired and some people hired. It won't be a 1:1 ratio, but the churn is there all the same.

      @ScrewTSW Před 15 dny

      @@krisspkriss That's the most retarded strategy I've ever heard of. Do you have any idea how long it takes for a new hire to become effective in a corporation? How long it takes for your investment to return any value? Half a year at minimum. Meanwhile you're firing in-house talent willy-nilly because profit percent number too low, not as big money, must pay less, must fire employee...
      Corporations are led by the most incompetent, most disconnected self-absorbed morons. Corporations by design work as follows: if you're fucking great at your current position, they keep pushing you up the corporate ladder to the point when you're doing a shit job and cannot be promoted any more. Broken system, fucking tragedy and something we chose to live with.

The way you people talk about AAA gaming, it's like you genuinely think they are just bullies. They are a business like anyone else, consumerism is driven by the consumer, not the producer. Stop buying every little nerd toy and dipshit video game when it comes out. And maybe the industry will realize they can't sustain their business at that rate. Or you can just keep buying games for $70 that aren't even complete, and then spend another $10000 on in game bullshit no one cares about. And then cry about the state of the industry...

    Former developer here. This is how it usually goes these days. We grind and work our ass off for years, and once it gets closer to release they lay off as many as possible in order to save money on staff combined with high sales once the game releases. In this way they make the most money possible. When you’ve done your part of the development you become a burden for the company and a cost since they don’t consider that my hard work will pay for itself many times over when gamers buy our game.
    I sacrificed my relationship, I moved away from my hometown and said goodbye to family and friends just to work for a company that broke me down. It’s like boiling a living frog, they do it slowly so you don’t even notice how it kills you day by day.

    The biggest problem with the corporate capitalist model is that companies want constant growth month after month year after year but the problem eventually is that you hit a plateau and instead of being content with making the same money they will fire people and cancel programs/ projects and make who’s left work harder to increase the stock value.
    Also remember a CEOs job is to make money for the shareholders of that company not to care for the workers even though it’s been proven that if you take care of your employees that company will make more money…
    But the American corporate model comes from ford vs dodge. To make it simple and quick Ford wanted to lower the price of his cars some and increase the pay of his workers hoping they and others would buy more of his cars but the Dodge brothers who had worked for him and were then shareholders sued and ford lost the ruling was that a company should only make money for the shareholders and basically forget the employee

You always have to be growing as much or more than you were before. Otherwise investors jump ship and you’re fucked. It’s such a toxic system and incentivizes “restructuring” of the company to meet profit goals. Corporations will simply be unable to grow there as there will be less people around to buy stuff, and corporations jumping onto the "AI" money train will be the first to be hit at some point. You can't sell you stuff and/or services if the customers can't afford to buy. And the US of A is a bright example, where the society get drained more and more with every year, people becoming objectively poorer than they were the year before and being forced to work multiple jobs to stay afloat. The situation is worse than you think, the $5Billion in revenue is nowhere near as bad as the truth. T2's earnings were ~400M in the last few years until 2023. They reported record revenue, but weirdly, they had -1.12B in earnings this time.
    This combined with the negative cashflow would explain the layoffs, because cashflow and layoffs are often correlated, but that doesn't explain the negative earnings. I did some digging into the company and if you notice, they've been buying companies like Zynga, Top Eleven, and GameClub. Microtransaction heavy companies.
    The sinister part of this is that it turns out, the CEO (and I think another executive) both earn 25% of their bonuses based on "recurrent spending" aka microtransactions. What they might be doing is they're laying people off and putting the company in the red, all to boost their microtransaction revenue and their own pockets.
    How is this not a conflict of interest?

    The unfortunate truth is that although gamers want the devs to rise up and go on protest by not working the same gamers aren’t willing to see GTA6 be pushed back because of so

      I don’t need it. Their greed is palpable in their product and now clearly in reality as well with this headline. GTA 5 online is one of the most disrespectful game products in existence. One of the richest companies…hard programs every nuance of the online experience to not give reasonable pay for hours invested…programs exorbitantly priced systems that you only find out about after you spend millions thinking it will provide cash flow and then realize there’s hidden expenses required and tons of unfinished, monotonous maintenance just to essentially break even….adds broken vehicles with griefing being the only obvious use that may as well be mods because of their price which limits access to rich hackers/griefers almost exclusively (fuck the Oppressor)…actually has the audacity to ask legitimate players to spend real money for shark cards while they get griefed by quadrillionaire hackers in EVERY session.
      I don’t need GTA 6 at all if that’s what it takes to say “Rockstar is a shithole of a dishonorable company after they made their billions from GTA Online and ran off with the money.”

      If you're not willing to support your devs you don't deserve their work. This is abysmally scummy and the devs are the ones who can fight back (normal people need to support the fight with money so the devs can live). The truth is they aren't taken seriously until they shut the company down (Nobody can replace them it's not even an option training and raising interest would take about a decade).
      This is heartbreaking people uproot their lives for this dream position and some were laid off in weeks or months. Some even went to school specifically with the dream in mind of working on the next GTA or Red dead 2K etc....

    I worked within the financial section as a Six Sigma greenbelt, my manager made it very clear that firing staff was unacceptable. Over time I came to see that laying people off was a sign of poor management, a lazy way out of management's bad judgements. And the gaming industry is the avatar of poor management.
