Too me, the moment in a musical that is emotional for me is Audrey's death in Little Shop of Horrors (hear me out). Now, I might be slightly bias because I was in a production of that show, but the only thing keeping me from crying every time we ran through that death scene in the show was the fact that I operated a spotlight during that scene. Part of it is the personal connection, yes, but there's other factors. Seymour just saw the death of "...the only thing I ever loved!" and it was HIS. FAULT. Put yourself in his shoes. Who's that person that is closest to you? Imagine it's you're fault they die. I think I would be that upset too. Secondly, she technically gets her wish, but in the most twisted way possible. Her "I want" song is called Somewhere That's Green, the reprise of that song is where she dies. Guess where she goes? The stomach of a plant. That's definitely a green place to be. She even says "Oh don't you see, finally I'll be, Somewhere That's Green." And it's still better than Skid Row. It's still better than where she lived at the moment. Thirdly, it could have been avoided, in several ways. If Seymour had told her of the plant's true tendencies, then she wouldn't have attempted to feed it. If they admitted their love to each other earlier (before the plant, before Orin dated Audrey, just before when it actually happened), Seymour wouldn't have signed the papers during The Meek Shall Inherit, and would have killed the plant, since he would have known that Audrey actually loves him. If Seymour didn't give in to the plant's temptations, and more. Finally, the music itself After her death, an instrumental version of Skid Row plays. Skid Row is Audrey's first song in the show, and the instrumental version is part of her last. This isn't nearly all of my reasoning for why Audrey's death is my moment in a musical, but I think I've made my point.
Using A Very Potter Musical to elaborate how awesome musicals are? I think we're gonna get along juuuuuust fine =)
I don't know why musical theater became my biggest influence. But it did.
And the theater scene that made me cry: Lea Salonga singing "On My Own" during the 10th Anniversary Cast concert.
Same with me crying during some of the songs with the Hamilton soundtrack.

My "moment" in seeing live theatre was when I saw Bare earlier this year. I'd won the ticket lottery and managed to get two tickets cheap so my friend and I went in completely blind. All I knew about the show was it had gay characters and it was sad. I WAS NOT PREPARED. So after Jason's funeral they sing the finale song and by the end of it they were all at the front of the stage in a line, and just as the song ends they all put tape across their mouths and BLACKOUT. I was bawling and laughing and cheering and I was so full of emotions it took me until I got out of the theatre to pull myself together.

1. You are so incredibly right about that self-visualization bit. A HUGE part of how I experience musical theater is, once I know a score well enough, I attempt to sing it though, and I always feel I know characters from musicals better than characters from elsewhere. Performing as a character, even if it's a three a.m. in your kitchen with a dodgy karaoke track, forces you to put yourself in their shoes and make sense of their motivations. A character you would have previously written off as incomprehensible and villainous suddenly becomes understandable and real.
2. A thing that I _love_ about musical theater which you didn't quite address but sort of danced around is how it's very much a living medium. You can go see the same show with the same cast ten nights in a row and have a different experience each time because the actors, if they know what they're doing, know how to breathe life into their material and don't just go through the motions. They can work out the bugs in their performances and consistently make them better and better.
Loving the revival of this channel, it's been a long time coming

I love musical theatre too - but you keep saying "no other medium does this" as if everything you say can't also apply to non-musical theatre.
Fair enough! If I were to make revisions to the video- I’d bring up how the addition of non-diegetic songs to musical theatre create an amazing air or surreal joy that’s found nowhere but Musical Theatre. I'd still dispute that it's exclusive to musical theatre - I've seen plays with non-diegetic monologues, and theatre that has brought an air of surreal joy to rival the joy I feel watching a good musical. I'm not disagreeing that musicals are great - and personally, given the choice between seeing the same story told via a great musical or an equally great play, I think I'd always choose the musical - but I think it's difficult to make an objective argument for it that doesn't apply to theatre as a whole.
I believe the true strength of musical theater is that it doesn’t have to cater to general audience sensibilities. Musical theater has typically been very progressive, especially when it comes to social justice issues. Musical theater is allowed to explore more themes that we still cannot see on the general screen.

Completely agree about the bows... whenever I do a musical the bows are really electrifying for both the Audience and the actors on stage.

I get really tired of people saying that the only people who likes musicals are old people. I once told my class that i like musicals and they said that i was a 99 year old. The people who say that only old people watch musicals have never listened to a musical or have very little information about the subject
These also apply to straight theatre (as in plays), just swap out songs with monologues and soliloquy’s.

I hade such a moment but NOT at a musical , At a play when saw The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at Piccadilly Theatre at Denman Street
London, W1 last year. When saw that i JUST SUCH an experience. I ACTUALLY CRIED WHEN Christopher read the box of letters !!!!!
The first musical that made me sob was Les Miserables in middle school at Valjean’s death. It is hard for me to listen to Fun Home and Parade in public because they both make me an emotional mess.

I'm not sure I've had my 'moment' yet, which is ok. I've got time. I've only seen a couple shows live
Although tbf there's only a handful of things I actually cry at (that aren't people making fun of me) and musical theater so far hasn't exactly changed that, even if I haven't watched many shows actually live
However, I know my mom's 'moment' was during rent when everyone was lined up but because angel was dead, she wasn't there, and my mom was apparently right in front of angel's spot. She's told me about that before
I don't feel ur really giving good reaosns on whu Muscail Theater is the "best" medium,
but u give good points on how it is a different and unique medium.
All mediums are good within their own advantages and disadvantages.
I mean the Good thing about the stage that its live and unique, but that is also the prolem
the same goes for film, the good thing is that it is set in stone, just one moment in time captured
I think the "problem" with theater is the limitations it gives as similar to books it relies on the audiences own imagination.
the great thing about film (often not always) is that the close up Shows us everything we need to know what the characters feel without having to tell or describe us
I came to your channel after searching up Assassins, since it was on my bucket list, and I found your video on it. Seeing this on you channel, I am subscribing.
Edit: I think most of the things you said apply to theatre in general, not just musicals. I think you should have focused a bit more on the music part. This medium is part of two art industries, therefor contributing to both. It gives viraity in music, I personally listen only to musical songs at this point. And is the sole working of many artists, as you said. Much more then regular theatre is, because of the music and choreography. But I think you could mention some of it's flaws. For example, it's really jard to be spread in non-English countries. Majority of musicals are in Enlgish. You can translate regular play, but to translate songs, especially so many, looks like Hell. Therefor you have to live in English speaking country, or you are kinda screwed. Saying it as a teen musical geek, living in the Balkans. I wish I could say I have had that moment, but I can't.
Other really big restriction - the need for vocal talent. Good voice, unlike lots of art skills, recuries natural talent. Yeah, I sure can imagine how I would interpret Veronica, but that will be all if I can't sing.
I really love musical theatre, but it has it'a flaws as all mediums do. Still great video.
