I have been seeing a lot of issues about the Ford F-150 5.0L trucks burning oil and loosing coolant to I thought Iâd run through what i did with my truck and how it seemed to fix the problem.

Mine is a 2020 5.0 with only 9600 miles on it. Changed the oil twice and, each time it was missing pretty close to 2.5 quarts. I'll keep track to see if it gets better with time. Thanks for the video man!!

That's not good
Remove the oil and add the 8.8 qts yourself. My dipstick is a short one it read as bone dry
There also was something with the dipsticks on some trucks being shorter than they are supposed to be causing an overfill of oil during a change.
Thatâs exactly it bro. Bought my 2018 5.0 new in 6/18. Used a little too much oil for what Iâm used to seeing (fords always about 1/4 quart in 3k miles). Used a lot up to 18k miles, then less, then, at around 30k miles, the consumption pretty much stopped .after 30k miles, barely moved at all up to about 3k miles. Iâd say 4K miles I added literally one cup of oil to make the drip stick go from a little below the cross hash, to above the cross hash. No TSBs, no dipsticks; no new motors, nothingâŠ..

My 2018 F 150 5.0 never has burned any oil. I had the first oil change at 1,500 miles then on average every 3,000 miles. Now I have 36,000 miles dip stick still full at 3,000 miles. I did install a catch can at 10,000 miles and started to use the flood mode engine start to help with the chain rattle. There are videos on how to do the flood mode start on CZcams. Doing this builds oil pressure before you start the engine.
Ford has a TSB (19-2365) that addresses this concern. The TSB details a reprogramming of the PCM to slightly leave the throttle blade open during certain decel situations which reduces vacuum in the intake tract causing less oil to be pulled past the piston rings. If you're still under warrenty this should be at no cost to you but if not YMMV.

There is no way oil is pulled past the piston rings with vacuum ..the pcv system pulls vacuum in the other direction ... The problem is 5w-20 and a overfilled crankcase ... Ford Engines were engineered to run 30 weight oil ... The EPA mandated 20 weight to cause less friction on the engine and increase gas mileage

2020 5.0, added a JLT catch can day one, did my break in oil change at 1500 miles, switched to mobile 1, zero issues. Can has a couple ounces every oil change but I check the oil level often, no concerns for mine yet at 16k miles

Catch can is a must regardless of consumption issue
The oil consumption will never stop, I had 2 engines replaced and still had oil consumption, ford will just drag it out until your warranty ends, I waisted so much time sticking with ford, sold it and bought a 2022 ram and cannot believe the difference in quality
How long did you own bothe of the vehicles

â@@Ashley-vi3by driving a 2018 f150 5l uses 1litre of oil in 4k i change the oil every 5k bottom line is 4yrs. Of use and no repair expenses. Ram trucks have their good and bad points like every other truck
My 2018 in shop rn dealer did oil change end Jan has 43300 mil next due date 45k. I've added 2 quarts since been serviced. Took it in Mon waiting for call.

had a 19 f150 HO ecoboost and burnt 2 quarts from new every 1k miles. Traded the piece of crap in for my first Ram and couldn't be happier..
I traded in my piece of junk 2019 2.7 because of excessive smoke and engine light on because of the smoke it generated. Waste of money truck. Never touch a Ford.

Synthetic oil is the problem.. My 2016 Silverado 5.3 burned 2qts in 3000 miles. I switched to conventional Pennzoil and now the consumption had almost stopped. I also run a catch can and noticed I collect much less oil using conventional oil then the synthetic.
That is because the conventional oil allowed the piston rings to "seat". You don't ever want synthetic oil in a brand new engine.
@@ericg3810 Yep but GM fills them at the factory with it. As far as I'am concerned they can keep it. I ran my last Silverado over 400,000 on conventional oil and never touched the inside of the motor.

I had the same issue with my 5.3 Changed back to conventional oil and didn't have any oil consumption.
The synthetic will cause leaks, but it wonât burn easier. Synthetic can get much more hot than conventional.
My 2018 5.0 XLT 4wd has never used a drop of oil. The tailpipe on the inside is spotless after 4 years. Finger won't even pick up anything. I guess I'm lucky. I used Motorcraft semi-synthetic for the first 40k. As soon as I changed oil the 2nd time, I red-lined the engine 4 or 5 times and then set it on 90 for about 10 miles, then have driven it normally ever since. At 40k I changed the oil to Motorcraft 10w30 full synthetic. The engine was always kinda noisy with the "tick" that so many 5.0's are known to have. The 10-30 synthetic made a huge difference in the noise. It's now much quieter, smoother and seems to run better. Love the truck. It's never been to the shop for anything but oil changes. Now has 54k and 0 issues. I broke in my Shelby GT350R in a similar way, although it sees a lot more high rpm use than my truck. Never had to put a drop of oil in it either. It uses 15w50 Motorcraft full synthetic. I am a retired mechanic with forty years plus experience. I have always broken my engines in in a similar way. I never have had oil consumption problems. I believe that occasional high r p m usage is the best way to seat the rings. Maybe I am wrong, but it's worked for me, and I have built many many engines over the years. I take it pretty easy with them the first thousand miles to let everything harden, and then I change the oil and do a few high-speed blasts.

I have a 2011 ford f 150 w/a 6.2 under the hood that burns oil. I have to put a qort of oil in ones a month.

If unusually high vacuum causes the oil consumption, how a bout adding a vacuum relief valve? Something that opens just above the normal vacuum point. Basically, the engine runs it's normal vacuum range, when the vac goes tonight, it opens to relieve excess vacuum.
Did you go from blend to full synthetic, I heard from other's that fixes it but idk
And I wonder if maybe catch can relieves some pressures or something... I've heard restrictions in diesel blowbye tubes can cause coolant loss
No I didnât change oil. Still the blend. I do have a catch can and that seemed to help. I did a few videos on mine if your interested. But I would suggest going with a diff one. Mine was cheep and broke quick so I had to change hoses.

Had a 2019 f-150 still burned oil after the âfixâ from ford so I sold it and got a 2022 Tacoma, It has worse gas mileage then the ford with is nuts cause itâs a smaller less powerful truck but hey it doesnât burn a drop of oil.

I'd start using the Motorcraft 5w30 synthetic blend oil.. it should be alright then
So I have had several 5.0, 2013 put 275K , 2018 Put 186K, no have a 2023 already at 56K zero problems, no oil consumption even in the 2013. You can get a lemon in everything thing though.
Have a 2020 Ford 5.0 bought with 32 miles it has 9800 now have taken it to the dealer 4 times and the only thing they do to it is an oil change.
Sounds about right. They donât actually know how to fix the problem so they just keep filling it with oil.
I don't know what they use as a factory fill but, you want a conventional oil for the first 500 miles to "seat the rings" then you switch to synthetic. Everyone that knows engines knows this.
I don't think there is much of an issue as long as you keep an eye on things and do your oil changes every 8k km or 5k miles. That engine is solid otherwise. I have a 2018 and have had zero issues.
@@RamsToTheRescue hay took the truck back to the dealer 12500 miles now 2 bad pistons 1 quart of oil for installing a new engine.
My 18 5.0 has the oil consumption ford did the TSB and I have to check it every 1,000 miles and right Iâve got 1,000 more miles to go before itâs at 5,000 and I have to take it back to ford for them to see how much itâs using truck has 53,000 miles on it but when it get to 5,000 miles itâs used a quart of oil.
Burning coolant đ€also how catch can gana fix valves seals leaking or piston rings failingđ€.. Dip stick recall is more for programming lol and so ford buy time of course lol
My 2018 with 5 litre doesn't burn any oil, I do have cold engine chain rattle, but my 7 year extended warranty will cover any issue.

I have the same issue, if by cold engine chain rattle you are referring to TSB-2018-2354, engine rattle on deceleration.

@@zeusman123 Yeah man sounds like what I have, amazing so many F-150s have it. The most I've gotten from a Ford tech is acknowledgement it exists but no fix.
Try holding gas pedal for few seconds while cranking motor . Then let go. That should solve the issue .
Iâve had a catch can since new on an 18 with the 5.0 been thru the ford test twice. Used 1qt at 3000 both times. They reprogrammed, added different dip stick and changed the PCV valve to an updated one. Still used oil but not as much.. I changed the oil to Motorcraft 5-30 from 5-20 âŠ.. oil consumption gone.

Exactly because they built the pistons looser to help engine to run easier, therefore better fuel economy. Unfortunately in turn more oil is having to coat the sides of the piston wall and more oil will be burnt. So a higher viscosity oil will yield lower consumption
Ford Engines are engineered to run 30 weight oil .. The EPA removed the stickers and put 5w-20 in its place
So the dipstick thing is the biggest misconception
The longer dipstick was to monitor the rate at which it was consuming oil not to hide it was or make it look better
They just increased the window an extra qt to keep an eye on it

Just bought a 18' 5.0has 46k it has a slight shake at idle I noticed I. The 2 days of owning it...fro. what I found is mass art is dirty or it needs revised spark plugs installed..
I have a Mustang GT , they put 5w-20 in it, for 1% fuel economyâŠand after 100k miles YOU have to change the motor đ( wtf Ford?) .
I have 10w- 60 MOTUL in IT for the summer, and in winter 5w-50 and i font have no oil consuption anymore . This coyote is running very HOT and YOU need oil viscocity. Trust me, Iâm an engineer!

Literally burnt over half the oil in my engine in a week and theyâre trying to re test it. Like just fix the shit or Iâm gonna do it myself.
The rings probably full seated them selves as mileage went up

Coyote 5.0 engines have "low-tension" multi-alloy rings for fuel economy purposes...that, plasma coated cylinder walls and synthetic oil gives really long break-in periods before "Stella finds her Groove".

@@rickymortero3023 I use Mobil 1 Synthetic 5W20 (factory recommended).
Just don't play around with thicker oils...you'll start throwing cam timing codes when things start getting plugged off in the engine. They're a noisier engine because of the direct injection at around 2000psi. Flash out your cylinder deactivation after the warranty's up, too.
Pretty sure ALL 2023 5.0's have it....but....not MY cup of tea, thanks.
I love my 2019. My Stella's found HER groove.

So on new models, 2021, they went back to direct and port injection which did away with need for catch can. Is this correct?
2018 the new 5.0 litre has Port and Direct injection, so carbon build up is not an issue. I have a 2018 and do not have any oil burning issues. I do have cold engine chain rattle. I have a 7 year extended full warranty from Ford so if anything happens I'm covered.

I think the issue is Ford designed the 5.0 to have to much oil 9 quarts is nuts the old teskid DOHC 4.6 was under 6 quarts idk why Ford seen a need for another 3 quarts

So I've been driving Fords for 35+ years. I'll say this "I never met ANY engine that doesn't use burn or leak oil" with that said, oil consumption is a real thing, NO MATTER THE ENGINE OR VEHICLE BRAND. Whew, that was tough.
I agree, almost nine quarts is a lot of oil. But if your using say a quart or slightly more wouldn't you want "extra" oil to guarantee lubrication? I've never used synthetic oils until the vehicle has around 50k on it. Never trusted the ring seating to anything other than conventional oils. Synthetic isn't the same no matter what they try to tell us. Yes it has a higher temp rating but it just can't lubricate as well as conventional it doesn't have the properties to achieve that. Use conventional when your engine is new switch to synthetic after it's got some time on it to keep it clean. My 18 5.0 runs great with no oil use it has 38k on it.
Last ford Iâll own. 85,000 miles and I ad a qt every month.

My truck uses 5 Qts every 1500 miles and it has 40000 miles on it and my dealership is still blow smoke up my a-s !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All I can add is don't use Motorcraft oil filters , they are cheap for a reason . Use a Fram Ultra .
Are you trolling? Fram filters - Ultra or regular are garbage CZcams it if your in doubt. Oil filter has nothing to do with oil consumption but the PVC does - get and replace with the newest version.

my 2020 has only 56000 miles and already has a real bad oil consumption 1 quart every 1600 miles and the dealer told me thats normal they don't want to fix nothing, is there anyone know if we can possible sued ford for selling bad Engines.
